Annotated Bibliography

Primary Source Documents Films:

Aladdin .Dirs. Ron Clements, John Musker. Perfs. Scott Weinger, Robin Williams, Linda Larkin. Walt Disney Pictures ,1992. DVD. This movie was helpful in developing our topic because it provided racism and sexism in ethnic cultures. Elements of the movie contain racism because both Aladdin and Jasmine have American characteristics and English accents whereas the villains are darker skinned and have Arabian accents. The movie contains sexism because Jasmine is treated as property by her father, Jafar, and Aladdin himself. Dumbo. Dirs. Samuel Armstrong, Norman Ferguson, Wilfred Jackson, Jack Kinney, Bill Roberts, Ben Sharpsteen. Perfs. Sterling Holloway, Edward Brophy, James Baskett. Walt Disney Pictures, 1941. DVD. This movie demonstrated racism and classism. The crows in Dumbo represented black stereotypes; the lead crow was named Jim Crow (segregation laws) which made the portrayal of these crows racist. The slaves setting up the circus tent were both classist and racist because the Roustabouts were obviously darker skinned and definitely of the lower class. Lady and the Tramp. Dirs. Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske. Perfs. Barbara Luddy, Larry Roberts, Peggy Lee. Walt Disney Pictures, 1955. DVD. This film demonstrated racism and classism because it showed the portrayal of lower class mutts as ethnic groups (e.g., Pedro, the Chihuahua with Mexican characteristics). The film also had elements of propaganda (e.g., Siamese cats were portrayed as Asian stereotypes) which expanded our research and helped our topic grow.

Leventi-Perez, Oana. Disneys portrayal of nonhuman animals in animated films between 2000 and 2010. Communication Theses. Paper 81. (2011). Print. This piece of research was the most influential and important document that we discovered. This paper discussed Disney as socializing agents of the youth, the portrayal of sexism in Disney films, and the representation of nonhuman animals. Monicatti, Ashley. Evolution of Disney. Tech. n.p.: Professor Cheu, 2010. Print This paper contributed primarily to the research of Dumbo by discussing the racial portrayal of the crows and other racial issues regarding the slaves in Dumbo that set up the circus tent. This paper also talks about how the racial issues in Dumbo correlate to the times when segregation and Jim Crow laws were allowed and overlooked.
