Russia suffered greatly when the Nazis walked into Russia i n WW2, and that hatred towards nazism is still fairly prevalent. If that were an ywhere remotely true about Ukraine's new government, then it would make some sen se, though I still will never support an open invasion. We have to understand th at the Russian propaganda machine is just as convincing as any, in any country. Edit: sorry on mobile and missed a few words. Yes. We have 2 countries. One with autocratic government, pro-war demonstrations , arresting pacifists, and invading other country. And in the other country some people used some nazi symbols. Which one is the nazi there? Do we fear nazi for their symbols or their actions? permalink parent [ ]executex 16 points 58 minutes ago This is the problem. Putin is no different than a Nazi himself, as he censors speech, prosecutes poli tical opponents, and preaches superiority of his group of people over others, gl obally, and in the regional neighborhood with ambitions of recreating an empire and also opposing the West. One of the problems facing Putin in the near-term is actually economic stagnation. The reason for the anti-gay policies and annexation of lan d is ultimately to boost the Russian population, which would be neccessary to cr eate growth (according to them). Also worth mentioning. The economy of California is bigger than that of Russia's . They are not more competetive economically, than any country in western europe , they just have massive resources and soviet era industrial facilities, basical ly they can pump out a hundred tanks quickly, but they can't take over economica lly like Germany can, they have to do it militarily. permalink parent load more comments (1 reply) [ ]Tokyocheesesteak 6 points 1 hour ago As a Russian, thank you for posting this. [ ]gray_crayon 89 points 5 hours ago* Interestingly, Russians have been protesting the war as well. BBC's Richard Galpin tweeted this photo of an anti-war protest of a couple hundr ed outside the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, earlier today: https://twitter.com/Richardgalpin/status/440068927323127808 Now there's a story you wont find on any Russia news outlet... I think it's important to realize that, although the Russian Federation is aggre ssively nationalistic, that doesn't mean it's peoples necessarily are. The coura ge necessary to take part in such a protest on behalf of another peoples is very humbling. Many of them were arrested after being aggressively dispersed by the police. permalink [ ]abbbc 64 points 5 hours ago You can get prison for several years just because police thought you were not "r espectful" to them or didn't complied to orders to stop protest. At least 10,000 people bearing Russian flags marched freely through Moscow o n Sunday, while dozens of people demonstrating on Red Square against an invasion of Ukraine were quickly detained by Russian riot police. But Russia's state-controlled TV stations have ratcheted up that rhetoric af ter months of pro-democracy protests in Ukraine forced its Russia-leaning Presid ent Viktor Yanukovych to flee Ukraine. Many Russians believe the country should maintain strong ties with Ukraine's predominantly Russian-speaking eastern and southern regions. The Associated Press witnessed over 50 detentions and spotted at least five police vans, which carry between 15 and 20 protesters, driving away from the squ are. That the sovereignty of Ukraine is just temporary/artificially and that Ukraine once will return in time. They also believe that all who are trying to defend Ukrainian sovereignty are fa scists and political enemies of Russia. This is related to the fact that one pro minent Ukrainian nationalist, Stepan Bandera, cooperated with the Nazis, thinkin g that the Nazis would help him dissemble the Soviet Union. If you talk about exposing "Russian shills" in the comments, that would only end badly. Lots of people don't want to hold nuanced opinions about these things. T he downvote brigades that would result from people downvoting every comment that doesn't portray Putin as a comic book bad guy would effectively censor lots of discussion in this place. In that sense I'd also be a bit worried about the recently reported on NSA progr am that apparently manipulates discussion in online forums and other astroturfin g programs.
