COURSE SYNOPSIS : This is an introduction to sociolinguistics, a study of the relationship between language and society. There will be discussions on the criteria developed by sociolinguists to differentiate language, dialect and variety. The discussions will also involve the roles played by dialects and to see how a language is recognized and used in society.
