root of the vine in the soil and continues to take care of it in order to produce good grapes. May our family continue to generate life. Like our Seven First Fathers, may all Servites experience the merciful and motherly special care of Our Lady Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ (cf. LO, nn. 7-8). Let every Servite "breathe out the good aroma of Christ by their holy life, not as slaves straining under the law, but living as free men under grace (Rule of St. Augustine, n. 48). fra Paolo M. FEAST OF OUR SEVEN FIRST FATHERS

With gratitude, we look to the Seven First Fathers, the root of the whole Servite family, while we solemnly celebrate their memory in the month of February. We recognize that it is they who created us in the Spirit, and the continuous contribution of other Servants has drawn us from generation to generation, attracted by the fragrance of Christ that we spread from country to country, continent to continent. As the Legenda de origne rightly affirms, we are the branches of the same vine, with their prayers they have received the grace from the Lord and after them the others continue to present to the Order according to the will of God (cf. LO, n. 1). We are grateful to be a part of this great family. Being part of the same family makes each one of us continue the desire to be part of it. It is a commitment to share the wealth, and the joy and the strength of our time in the Spirit. Through the Servite way of life we search the image of the Father in the brothers and sisters; who commit to bring the serenity and peace given by Jesus; which is recognized in the sharing of the richness; which is expressed in our daily personal and communal prayers; through which we receive the blessing of the Lord, which our First Fathers received to lead the Servite Family according to the will of God. Alexis, who lived for a long time, speaking in the name of all the Seven says neither he nor any of the Seven ever claimed to be Founders but they recognized for building up the Order which was already founded by Our Lady (cf. LO, n. 8), Blessed and Glorious Virgin Mary (cf. LO, n. 62). She is the one who planted the

FROM THE GENERAL COUNCIL

COMMUNICATIONS FROM THE GENERAL COUNCIL
The General Council gathered together for a council meeting on 22, 24 and 31 January 2014 in the offices of the General Curia, San Marcello, Rome. As usual, the synthesis of the council decisions is presented in this issue of COSMO ON LINE.

1. Financial Council of the Order

The statutes of the General Treasurers Office foresee the formation of a financial council of the Order with at least with three members. The General Council approved the proposal of the General Treasurer, fra Piergiorgio M. Mazzoleni, to nominate six members respecting the diversity of language and nationality, of which three are newly appointed and the other three are reconfirmed. The elected members of the Financial Council are: fra Frantiek (Fero) M. Bachork (for the German speaking jurisdiction), fra Yvon M. Chalifoux (for French speaking jurisdictions), fra Gnanapragasam M. Arulanandu (for English speaking jurisdictions IND, PHI, AUS), fra Christopher M. OBrien (for English speaking jurisdictions USA, ISL, ZUL), fra Miguel M. Stangaferro (for Spanish and Portuguese speaking jurisdictions SMA, MEX, IDS/MEX, BRA, MOZ/BRA), fra Stefano M. Viliani (for Italian speaking jurisdictions PRF, VEN, ANN, ESP, SWA).

and VEN are the provinces who take care of the entire expenses for their respective students. Scholarships are offered by the jurisdictions of ANN, AUS, CAN, ISL, PRF, TIR, VEN, USA to Servite students of other jurisdictions. Other than these, there are some academic scholarships offered by benefactors. At the request of VEN province, the province of TIR has accepted to offer scholarships for two years to the Servite students of theology in the community of Nairobi, Kenya from the East African Delegation (EAF) of the province.

4. Marian Document of the 2013 General Chapter

To print the Marian document of the General Chapter, Avvenga per me secondo la tua parola (Lk 1, 38) I Servi e Maria, icona di chi vive ascoltando e testimoniando la Parola the General Council has given its definitive guidelines to the president of Marianum (for the content and correction of the drafts) and to the administrator of the Marianum Publication Centre (CEM) (for the technical aspects of printing). The Chapter document will be published as an editio typica in the Italian language in the journal of Marianum, the organ of our faculty. For a greater popularization and wider distribution of the document, it will be published by the Marianum Publication Centre (CEM) with the same format used for the series of Proceedings of the Symposium of the Faculty. The General Council agreed to use the fresco of the Annunciation (Santissima Annunziata) in Florence on the cover page, in order to resume the figure of the Virgin of the Annunciation with her response in Latin Ecce ancilla Domini (cf. Lk 1, 38) and, on the last page, to print the emblem of the Order which is found on the cover page of the Orders 2013-2014 Liturgical Calendar. After the publication of the editio typica, there will follow translations in other languages spoken within the Order.

2. Financial Verification during the Canonical Visitation of the Prior General

The Prior General invited the General Council to reflect on possible methods of facilitating the financial verification of the priories (cf. Const. 227) during his canonical visitation to the jurisdictions of the Order. So as not neglect this aspect of the canonical visit and at the same time give importance to other aspects of the visitation, the Prior General has decided to delegate the General Treasurer to do the financial verification with the collaboration of a friar of his choice belonging to the jurisdiction being visited. In case he is not able to do this by himself, another member from the Orders financial council will carry this out. The verification is done according to Constitutional directives regarding the administration of the priory (cf. Const. 227) and based on suggestions given by the 2013 General Chapter regarding the administration of a priory (cf. GC 2013, nn. 34-39), in particular, the use of goods (cf. GC 2013, nn. 35-36), reducing expenses (cf. GC 2013, n. 36), and the search for new sources of income (cf. GC 2013, n. 37). At the end of this financial verification, the General Treasurer will present a written report to the Prior General who will refer it to the jurisdiction that was visited.

5. Liturgical Books for the Community of Matola

Fra Charlie M. Leito de Souza, novice master, presented a request to the General Council asking for a contribution to buy liturgical books for the community of Matola (composed of 24 members: 4 solemn professed friars, 7 future novices [4 Mozambicans, 3 Brazilians, 1 Peruvian], 1 pre-novice, 8 postulants and 4 aspirants [just arrived]). To meet this need, it was decided to use contributions that come from benefactors for the Servite Missions.

3. Scholarships for Servite Students in Rome

The administrator of P.F.T. Marianum, fra Piergiorgio M. Mazzoleni, has presented to the General Council a global vision of the scholarships given to Servite students who live at Saint Alexis International Formation Community, Rome. There are two kinds of scholarships available. The first type of scholarship is very significant and comprises the monthly rent (ten months per annum) to live in Rome. The second type of scholarship is purely academic and includes the registration and exam fees for courses at the P.F.T. Marianum. Personal expenses of the students are not normally included in the scholarship, but are covered by their respective jurisdictions.

6. Space for Postulation for the Causes of Beatification and Canonization In the process of taking over responsibility for postulation and at the request of the new postulator for the causes of beatification and canonization, fra Franco M. Azzalli, the General Council, in dialogue with the community of San Marcello, identified an appropriate place to deposit the documents.
7. Invitations to the Members of the General Council In order to keep expenses under control and ensure a continuous presence in the Community of San Marcello during this six year term, the General Council proposed visiting the secular fraternities and other realities of the Servite Family at the time of canonical visits to the jurisdictions, or during other events (General Council meetings with Provincials, during Provincial / Vicarial elective Chapters, etc.). 2

8. Preparation for the General Councils Meeting with Provincials The next General Council meeting with the Priors, Vicar and Delegates Provincial will take place at St. Marys University College, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham [St Mary's University College, Waldegrave Road, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, London TW1 4SX; tel.: 020 8240 4000], in London from Monday 8 to Tuesday 16 September 2014. The General Secretary has already communicated this information by email to the persons responsible in the respective jurisdictions. The selection of London was motivated by the fact that the 150th anniversary of the arrival of Servites in England (Fulham Road-London) will be celebrated in these days. The feast is fixed for Sunday, 14 September 2014, at 12.15. The Archbishop of Westminster, Msgr. Vincent Nichols (who will be made Cardinal on 22 February 2014), will preside in our church, Our Lady of Dolours, Fulham Road-London. At the same time, we are also hoping to celebrate the feast with the Sister Servants of Mary of Cuves/London, who celebrate this year the 150th anniversary of their aggregation to the Order; among the congregations of OSM women, theirs was the first to be aggregated to the Order. In the coming days, the Secretary of the Order will prepare a letter from the Prior General to the Provincials inviting them to propose topics for the agenda of this meeting.

CENTER FOR COMMUNICATIONS

On the memorial of St. Francis de Sales (Patron saint of mass media), 24 January 2014, Pope Francis gave his message for the 48th World Communications Day which will be celebrated on 1 June 2014 (Sunday of the Ascension of the Lord). The Holy Father invites us to communicate with our neighbors, overcoming all cultural, national, regional, and linguistic obstacles with the theme Communication at the Service of an Authentic Culture of Encounter. Starting with the question the scribe put to Jesus, And who is my neighbor? (Lk 10: 29), Pope Francis helps us to understand social communications in terms of neighborliness Communication is really about realizing that we are all human beings, children of God. Therefore, Pope Francis likes seeing this power of communication as neighborliness. Let us try to accept the neighborliness of others with our communications sharing and receiving the information of our Servite Family. The entire message of Pope Francis is found on the website: (http://www.vatican.va/holy_father/francesco/

9. Planning for the First Canonical Visitation

The first canonical visitation of this six year term will be made to the Santissima Annunziata Province. During the month of March and the first days of April 2014, the Prior General and Councilor reference for the province will visit all the priories to meet all the friars of the Province.

VOCATION PROMOTION
On the occasion of the 51st World Day of Prayer for Vocations, which will be celebrated on 11 May 2014 (IV Sunday of Easter), Pope Francis, in his message on the theme Vocations, witness to the truth, invites us to pray the Prayer of Jesus, who prayed to the Father to send laborers to Kingdom of God: the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest (Mt 9:35-38). He reminds us that in all vocations, whether married life, any form of religious consecration, or the priestly life, we must overcome thinking and acting against the will of God. Therefore, every vocation, even in the plurality of journeys, always requires an exodus from self-centeredness toward Christ and his Gospel. God takes the initiative to call those whom he chooses, but we need to pray to Him in order to find persons who are available to respond concretely. And thus, do not forget the importance of prayer for vocations. The Popes entire message is found on the website:

ANN PROVINCE Swaziland: Beginning of Centenary Year and the Entrance of New Bishop The Servite friars in Swaziland lived a moment of joy and celebration on 26 January 2014 for two important reasons: the first, the arrival of a new bishop to the diocese of Manzini, Msgr. Jos Luis Ponce de Leon (Apostolic Administrator of the same diocese and Bishop Apostolic of the Vicariate of Ingwavuma, Zululand); and second, the beginning of the centenary year of the arrival of Servites in Swaziland (27 January 1914). Msgr. Jos presided over the Eucharistic celebration and, during the homily, remembered the history of the Church in Swaziland and appreciated the arrival of the first Servite missionaries fras. Simeon M. Oberleitner (1878-1963), Arimathus M. Gratl (18711944) and Pellegrino M. Bellezze (1884-1961) in 1914, and their hard work to plant the Church in Swaziland.

At the end of the celebration fra Sergio M. Ziliani, Prior Provincial of ANN with the qualification of Prior Generals delegate, thanked Msgr. Jos for the availability and the attention shown to the Servites as Apostolic Administrator of the diocese after the death of Msgr. Louis M. Ndlovu. Then he too recalled the numerous friar Servants of Mary, who gave their lives to plant and build the Church in these one hundred years of Church history in Swaziland. Finally, he wished Msgr. Jos a fruitful pastoral ministry as a sign of hope for the social and ecclesiastical development in the Swaziland. Also present were fra Stefano M. In January 2014 the revised English Servite Missal was printed at last by the Secretariat of the Province of the Isles. It is two volumes, Lectionary and Sacramentary, attractively printed on quality paper and bound in fine red casing with gold Servite logo. The Missal was developed over ten years ago between the USA Province and the Province of the Isles, with the bulk of translation and organisational work by fra Gerry M. Horan. Fra Paul M. Addison kept faith with all fra Gerrys work. Indeed, the translations remain the ones he offered, enhanced by the insertion of the new English for the Mass and new liturgies for recently beatified Servites and three Votive Masses for St Peregrine. Several years ago fra Paul M. Addison published a beautifully bound two-volume edition of our Missal, 15 sets for the friars and sisters of the Province of the Isles. Landslide in Freisinger
The dairy farm Freisinger at Ronchi Tramin in South Tyrol experienced a big landslide. This dairy farm was donated by Conte Freising to the Servite Priory of Maria Luggau in Carinthia. From then on the dairy was under the administration of our Servite Priory, and now it is under the administration of the provincial council of Tyrol. On 21 January 2014 at 20:30 local time, from Tramin mountain four stones fell from above, more than a thousand cubic meters in height. Two big stones (seen in photo nn. 2 and 3), completely destroyed two agricultural buildings and the land. Miraculously, a big stone (seen in photo n. 1) of 600 cubic meters stopped just in front of a house, where a family lives. Another big stone (seen in photo n. 4) stopped a little before a high tension electric post. To safeguard the dairy from further destruction, the remaining pendulum stones from the mountain need to be blasted out. In front of the house and near the

electric post, high protection walls were built, therefore, the dairy remains closed. Apart from the buildings and land, two tractors and four hectares of vineyard were destroyed. In one of the destroyed agricultural buildings wall, there stands a crucifix. In 1998, then Cardinal Ratzinger, during his visit to the diary farm prayed in front of this crucifix and blessed the dairy farm. The mayor of the Tramin city is convinced that, due to the grace of this blessing, no one was wounded or died in this great disaster. The damage is calculated by experts to be in millions of Euros. fra Martin M. Lintner O.S.M.
