[Time Allowed: 3 hrs] [Max Marks: 100] NOTE:- Attempt any five questions by selecting at least two from each section.

PART-A
Q1. a) Explain with sketch working of reversed Carnot cycle & discuss its limitations. How will the variation of ambient temperature affect the performance of a Carnot refrigerator? (10) b) A Carnot engine receives heat at Ta and rejects heat to a sink at Tb. This engine is used to derive a Carnot refrigerator which removes the heat at Tc and reject heat at Tb. Determine the ratio of heat removed at Tc to heat received at Ta. If Ta is 400c and Tc is -300C determine Tb for the condition that heat supplied to the engine is equal to the heat removed by the refrigerator. Also determine engine efficiency and COP of the refrigerator. (10) Q2. a) Explain with schematic lithium bromide absorption refrigeration system. Discuss its applications advantages and limitations. (10) b) Discuss advantage of vapour absorption system over vapour compression refrigeration system. (10) Q3. An ammonia refrigerator produces 20 tons of ice per day at 00C. The condensation and evaporation takes at 200C and -200C respectively. The temperature of vapour at the end of isentropic compression is 500C and there is no under-cooling of the liquid. The actual COP is 70% of the theoretical COP. Determine the main flow rate of the refrigerant, the size of the single acting compression when running at 240rpm, assuming L=D and volumetric efficiency of 80%. Take specific heat of superheated vapour 2.8kJ/Kg-K. (20)

Q4. a) A closed cycle air-refrigeration system working on reverse Brayton cycle is required for 10tons refrigeration capacity. The cooler pressure is 4.2 bar and refrigerator pressure is 1 bar. The air is cooled in the cooler to a temperature of 500C and the temperature of air at inlet to the compressor is -200C . For an ideal cycle determine COP of the system, mass of circulated per minute, piston displacement of compressor and net power per ton of refrigeration. Take Cp for air 1.07kJ/Kg-k. (10) b) A boot-strap evaporative air refrigeration system is employed in an aeroplane, moving at Mach 1.3, to take 18 tons of refrigeration load of the cabin. The cooling air is taken from the main compressor at 4.2 bar and further compressed to 5.2 bar which is run by cooling turbine. The data is: ambient conditions 0.52 bar, -120C, isentropic efficiency of the compressor 88%, isentropic efficiency of the secondary compressor 82%, isentropic efficiency of the cooling turbine 80%, effectiveness of both heat exchangers 0.42, ramming efficiency 92%, temperature of the air coming out of evaporative cooler 1000C, the pressure and temperature maintained in the cabin 1 bar and 270C. Determine: mass taken from main compressor for cabin cooling, power required and COP of the system. Take for air Cp and 1kj/kg-k and as 1.4. (10)

PART-B
Q5. a) What are primary and secondary refrigerants? Discuss the necessity application and types of secondary refrigerants. (10) b) Discuss properties and uses of R11 and R12 refrigerants. (10)

Q6. An air conditioning system is designed for industrial process for hot and wet summer conditions 300C DBT and 75% RH, required conditions 22 DBT and 70% RH, amount of free air circulated 200m3/min. Coil dew point temperature is 140C. The required condition is first achieved by cooling and dehumidifying and then by heating. Find the cooling capacity of cooling coil and its bypass factor, heating capacity of the heating coil in

kW and surface temperature of the heating coil if its bypass factor is 0.2 and mass of water vapour removed per hour. (20)

Q7. An air-conditioning system is designed for a restaurant when the following data is available: total heat gain through walls, roof and floor 21200kJ/hr, solar heat gain through glass 6800kJ/hr, equipment sensible heat gain 10000kJ/hr, equipment latent heat gain of 2400kJ/hr, sensible heat gain per person 200kJ/hr, latent heat gain per person 160kJ/hr, total infiltered air 400m3/hr, outdoor conditions 350C DBT & 260C WBT, inside design conditions 270C DBT & 55% RH, minimum temperature of the air supplied to the room 170C DBT, total amount of fresh air supplied 1600m3/hr, seating chairs for dining 100, employees serving the meals 10. Find amount of air delivered in cum/hour, percentage of re-circulated air, refrigeration load on the coil in tons of refrigeration and DPT of the coil and its bypass factor. (20)
