Besides, the CCFL and direct-type LED TVs are now comparable in thickness. Sony is reportedly considering withdrawing from S-LCD, a joint venture set up by Samsung Electronics and the Japan-vendor, due to Sony's mounting losses in the TV segment. Third-quarter net loss was NT$15.8 billion ($525 million), the largest in 10 quarters, compared with a profit of NT$227 million a year earlier. The average of 18 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg was for a loss of NT$5.55 billion. AU Optronics Corp. For October 2011, largesized panel(a) shipments, with applications on desktop monitor, notebook PC, LCD TV and other applications, exceeded 9.03 million units, down by 8.6% from the previous month. As for small-and-medium-sized panels, the shipments were around 16.49 million units, down by 11.9% month-over-month. AUO has no plans to ramp up its capacity in 2012 and will also place stringent controls on its capex and operating expenses for the year, Lee said. New LCD Panels AU Optronics (AUO) and Chimei Innolux (CMI) are expected to release 39- and 50-inch LCD TV panels at the end of 2011 or in early 2012 following the successful launch of 43- and 48inch TV panels by Samsung Electronics in the third quarter of 2011, according to industry sources. The 39-inch panels will be offered at a price range comparable to that for 37-inch models, therefore attracting TV vendors to take on the products, stated the sources, adding that the 50-inch panels are likely to be available at US$340-420, much cheaper than the US$490-570 quoted for 55-inch panels. The production of 39- and 50-inch panels will help AUO and CMI ramp up capacity utilization rates at their 6G and 7.5G production lines, indicated the sources.

Ultrabook Panels Acer and Asustek Computer have been working with panel makers AU Optronics (AUO) and Chimei Innolux (CMI) separately to develop a new generation of full HD notebook panels with a resolution of 1,920x1,080, according to industry sources. Apple's plan to introduce its next-generation iPads with the high-resolution Retina displays (2,048x1,536) in early 2012 will push the market to opt for highresolution models, forcing branded notebook vendors to upgrade their products, said the sources. Foxconn has not explained the suspension and also did not make any response when asked for comment. Foxconn originally planned to rent 100,000 square meters of factory space in Dongguan to produce small-size touch screens for tablet PCs and monitors. Panel Market Large Size Panel Shipments DisplaySearch estimates are based on panel makers' shipment targets in fourth-quarter 2011, which can be concluded that 209 million units of LCD TV panels will be shipped in 2011, 5% less than the 220.8 million units shipped during 2010. This would make 2011 the first year that LCD TV panel shipments have experienced decreases. Shipments of large-size TFT LCD panels were 185.5 million units in third-quarter 2011, flat compared to the previous quarter. However, the figure shows an increase of 12% on year. Revenues reached US$19.2 billion, down 2% on quarter and 11% on year, according to the DisplaySearch. Panel makers are targeting a very modest 2% growth in shipments for fourth-quarter 2011, as downstream manufacturers and brands are expected to prepare for the holiday season. Revenues are not expected to grow because there are no signs of rebound for panel prices.

Healthcare devices Branded LCD TV/monitor vendor Chimei has expanded its product lines to include LED lighting and Blu-ray players, and is evaluating the possibility of also venturing into healthcare devices such as air cleaners and sterilizers, according to industry sources.

Price declining An unusually large decline of nearly 5 percent in the pricing of TV panels caused by anemic demand helped drive down overall prices of large-sized liquid crystal display (LCD) panels in September by the highest margin in a year, according to an IHS iSuppli LCD report. The 4.9-percent contraction in LCD TV panel pricing was the steepest in at least 12 months, and also was the second straight month of decline greater than 4 percent.

In August, LCD TV panel pricing fell 4.3 percent following dips averaging less than one percent in the past four months. For an even bigger drop than that in September, one would have to go back to the same time last year when LCD TV panel prices fell 5.2 percent. The price reductions on TV panels were continuing in October as the end of the year neared.

Prices of certain sizes of large-size LCD panels are likely to bottom out soon due to an influx of short lead-time orders, according to KY Lee, chairman of AU Optronics (AUO). However, Lee stated that the business outlook for the panel industry in 2012 remains unclear. Sales of LCD TVs during the 2011 Black Friday shopping weekend in North America were pretty much amazing, pushing up demand for flat panels, Lee noted, adding that prices of certain sizes of monitor and TV panels have been raised accordingly.

LCD TV inventory Overstocked inventory of LCD TV panels in 2011 has been causing panel firms tremendous pressure. Market watchers estimate global shipments of LCD TV panels will show a decrease compared with the figure in 2010. However, the market watchers also estimate conditions will turn around in 2012. Due to backlogs, panel prices and utilization rates have been decreasing continuously. According to research institutes, total shipments of LCD TV panels from Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, and China in 2011 should be around 207.8 million units, a 6% decrease compared to 220 million units in 2010. Firms have been setting shipment goals for 2012 and expect the market to rebound. According to industry sources, total shipment targets from firms in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea and China for 2012 will be around 247.3 million units.

capacities during the quarter, according to industry sources. Over the past few months, TFT LCD panel makers have been controlling production to minimize inventories and reduce losses. Despite this, according to DisplaySearch, October loading rates experienced an increase to 75% from 68% in September. Although the average utilization rate of panel makers in October increased to 75% from 68% in September, the increase was due to increases at South Korea-based panel firms, which are around 84-85%. LG Display and Samsung Electronics both have been increasing shipments to the China market and expect shipments to increase further in November and December. Taiwan-based panel makers also increased October capacity utilization rates. However, the average was around 65%. Market watchers expect Taiwan-based makers to continue operating at around 65% in the fourth quarter. The increased utilization rates of South Korea-based firms were because the firms have own-brand businesses. Without strong brand support, Taiwan-based makers face more difficulty increasing utilization rates. Research institutes predict the global utilization rate in November to drop to 74% and by December, the figure is likely to drop to 72%. Shipments hit a climax in October for LCD TV panels, hence shipments in November are likely to drop 2%.

3D LCD TV panel Shipments of 3D LCD TV panels reached 6.6 million units in the third quarter of 2011, accounting for 27 percent growth quarter over quarter, according to a report from NPD DisplaySearch. The pattern retarder type and shutter glass type are growing by 34 percent and 23 percent, respectively. Small to medium size flat panel Most small- to medium-size flat panel production lines at Taiwan-based LCD panel makers are operating nearly at full capacity due to strong demand for small- and medium-size panels from the tablet PC, digital toy, e-book reader, smartphone and DSC sectors, according to industry sources.

Value-Added small to medium flat panels Competition in the small-size flat panel market is also expected to heat up starting from 2012 as four Japan-based companies - Innovation Network Corporation of Japan (INCJ), Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba - have decided to a set up a new company focusing on the development and production of high value-added small- to medium-size flat panels, the sources commented.
