ELEC 2032 Assignment 1 Magnetic Circuits Deadline: 18th February 2013 Note:

Any student not using the proper notations for S1 and S2 will have their assignment voided and 5 point will be deducted from their total CA Marks. Please note that there are SIX questions to be answered.
Question 1
Figure Q1 shows an iron circuit with a small air gap cut in it. A 6S1S20 turn coil carries a current I = 2S1 mA which sets up a flux within the iron and across the air gap. If the iron cross section is 0.8S2 x10-4 m2, the mean length of flux path in iron is 0.1S1 S2 m and r = 8S10 in iron. Calculate the air gap flux density(B) and magnetic field strength(H) within the gap when: (i) The air gap length is 0.7S1 mm, i.e no flux fringing. (ii) The air gap length is 5.S2 mm, flux fringing leads to an effective cross-sectional are which is twice the iron core cross-sectional area.

Question 2 A magnetic circuit is made of sheet steel arranged as in Fig. Q2(a). The center limb is wound with 5 S1S2 turns and has a cross sectional area of 8 S20 mm2. Each of the outer limbs has a cross sectional area of 2 S1S2 mm2. The air gap has a length of 1 mm. Calculate the current required to set up a flux of 1.S1 mWb in the center limb, assuming no magnetic leakage and fringing. The mean lengths of the various magnetic paths are shown on the diagram. [ can be obtained from Fig 2(b). Use saturation if your values do not fit in the graph ]

Question 3 A magnetic circuit is made up of cast steel laminations shaped as in Fig.Q3. The width of the iron is 4S1 mm and the core is built up to a depth of 5 S2 mm, of which 8 percent is taken up by insulation between the laminations. The gap is 2 mm long and the effective area of the gap is 25S1S2 mm2. The coil is wound with 8 S1S2 turns. If the leakage factor (the ratio of the total flux in the core over the air gap flux) is 1.2, calculate the magnetizing current required to produce a flux of 0.002 S15 Wb across the air gap. [Use the given BH curve in Fig 2(b)].

Question 4 A magnetic circuit has a mean length of 0.8S1m, a cross-sectional area of 0.06 S2m2, and a relative permeability of 2S1S27. Connecting its 3S1S2 turn 6S1 magnetizing coil to a DC circuit causes a 5S2V drop across the coil. Determine the flux density in the core.

Question 5 An Inductor is made of two coils, A and B, having 3 S1S2 and 1S1S2 turns, respectively. The coils are wound on a cast steel core and in directions as shown in Fig Q5. The coils are connected in series to a dc voltage. (a) Determine the two possible values of current required in the coils to establish a flux density of 0.5S2 T in the air gap. (b) Determine the self inductance La and Lb of the two coils. Neglect magnetic leakage and fringing. (c) If coil B is now disconnected and the current in coil A is adjusted to 2.S1 A, determine the mean flux density in the air gap.

Figure Qu. 5 Question 6 A toroidal core has a rectangular cross section as shown in Fig Q6a. It is wound with a coil having 1S1S2 turns. The B-H characteristic of the core may be represented by the linearized magnetization curve of Fig Q6b. (a) Determine the inductance of the coil if the flux density in any part of the core is below 1.S1 Wb/m2 (b) Determine the maximum value of the current for the condition of part(a) (c) Determine the minimum value of the current for which the complete core has a flux density of 1.S2 Wb/m2 or greater.
