utrition is
important for
people of all
ages, but its especially
important for men and
women over the age of
50, who can dramati-
cally improve their
quality of life by eating
a well-balanced diet
filled with vitamins
and nutrients. Though
that may seem
like common sense,
research has shown
that men and women
in this age group, who
are often referred to as
Baby Boomers, are
not necessarily as
healthy as they may
seem.
While the baby
boomer generation,
which is generally regarded
as those people born
between 1946 and 1964,
boasts longer life expectan-
cies than any generation that
came before them, some of
that can likely be chalked up
to advancements in medical
care, including a booming
pharmaceutical industry that
seemingly has an antidote to
every ailment. But a 2013
study from researchers at the
West Virginia University
School of Medicine found
that baby boomers are less
healthy than the generation
that immediately preceded
them, tending to be more
likely to have higher levels
of hypertension, diabetes
and high cholesterol. While
that news might be sobering,
its never too late for men
and women over 50 to start eating
healthier diets, which can reduce
their risk of a wide range of ail-
ments, including heart disease,
stroke and osteoporosis.
The following are a few ways
men and women over 50 can alter
their diets so their bodies are get-
ting what they need to live long
and healthy lives well into their
golden years. As is always the
case, men and women should dis-
cuss any potential changes to
their diets with their physicians
to ensure the changes will be both
effective and healthy.
Balance your diet.
Kids hear of the benefits of a
balanced diet seemingly from the
moment they enter a classroom
for the first time, but many adults
fail to heed that basic advice as
they get further and further away

M
y 13 year old son,
Sam, and I were dis-
cussing his fascina-
tion with the lifestyle of our
precious Pomeranian, Bella.
She will forever be a puppy, as
Pomeranians are a small breed
less than 15 pounds. She will
always look like a little fur
ball, full of pep, warmth and
eager to please, doing tricks
for a treat or just to make her
owners happy.
Before Bella, we had our
first Pomeranian, named
Zorra, who shared our lives for
16 years. Much smaller in
physical size than Bella, Zorra
weighed only 18oz when we
first met her, reaching a maxi-
mum weight of 7 pounds at
her prime. We still miss Zorra
terribly and often compare the
two dogs characteristics and
mannerisms. Frequently, we
linger on the fact that they are
so human-like, so bright and
how wonderful it would be to
live the life of one of our dogs.
Let me explain: the food and
fresh filtered water bowls are
always full and the dog has
learned that over-eating isnt
necessary because there is
never a time that she can see
the bottom of the bowl. She
regularly receives medical/
dental attention, gets plenty
of rest and relaxation and play
time is plentiful with any of
her Charnet roommates,
who are happy to snuggle her
each and every time she
desires some affection.
Bella visits the groomer
for a bath, mani-pedi and
haircut every 6 weeks or so
and weekly, my wife brushes
her teeth and bathes her giv-
ing her an oil hair treatment
with the finest of products
made exclusively for dogs.
This is also true of her diet,
snacks and treats! She has a
few fenced-in acres here to
explore and run around and in
the spring and summer all of
us play catch the ball with her,
needling each other as to
which human she prefers to
bring the ball back to. In the
summer, Bella, like Zorra
before her, swims with us in
the pool for hours even going
down the slide by herself. We
havent been able to teach her
how to climb the ladder and
doubt we ever will, but she
innately knows how to dry
herself off on a towel we place
on the pool deck for her
exclusive use. Yes, the life of
our dog is an envious one and
probably why Bella is so happy
and should enjoy a long,
healthy life like Zorra did
before her.
Kind of sounds like the
perfect retirement for humans,
doesnt it? The life of the fam-
ily dog, who is loved, amply
fed, stroked and cared for, who
returns this treatment with a
never-ending stream of puppy
kisses and affection in recog-
nition of her good fortune.
Bella also acts as the canine
burglar detection system with
no extra effort or expense. We
love our dog and feel a bit of
guilt when leaving her behind
with friends when going on
vacation. Analogously, I am
modeling our retirement after
the lifestyle of our family dog.
I want to be able to retire and
vacation wherever my wife
and I choose, have the great-
est of medical care here and
there, plan that we may never
see the bottom of the bowl
and have the best of every-
thing, wherever we may go. I
want to go down the slide by
myself someplace warm in the
dead of winter and invite my
children and grandchildren to
go with us and have my wife
receive her baths, massages,
makeovers with hot oil hair
treatments whenever she
wants or needs them. Of
course this requires a robust
retirement portfolio, one that
will never expose the bottom
of the bowl, so that we wont
outlive our money. Isnt this
what we are all working to
accomplish before we hang

from kindergarten. When
changing your diet, be sure to
include plenty of protein and
carbohydrates. Protein main-
tains and rebuilds muscles,
which is especially important
for aging men and women
who might find themselves
unable to keep up with the
physical demands of everyday
life as well as they used to.
Including ample low-fat pro-
tein, which can be found in
fish, eggs and low-fat dairy
among other foods, will aid in
muscle recovery, benefitting
aging athletes as well as those
men and women over 50 who
recently started exercising as a
means to regaining their phys-
ical fitness. A diet lacking in
sufficient protein can con-
tribute to muscle deteriora-
tion, arthritis and even organ
failure, so its important for
men and women to prioritize
including protein in their
diets.
Carbohydrates are also an
important part of a balanced
diet, as they are a great source
of energy that can help men
and women stay active well
past the age of 50.
Carbohydrates found in fruits,
grains and vegetables are the
most beneficial, as these con-
tain valuable vitamins, miner-
als and nutrients.
Dont denounce dairy.
Dairy is a great source of
calcium, which promotes
strong bones and teeth. Men
and women over the age of 50
want their bones to be as
strong as possible because
aging is one of the strongest
risk factors for osteoporosis, a
potentially debilitating med-
ical condition in which loss of
tissue causes bones to become
brittle and fragile. Vitamin D
is necessary to effectively
absorb calcium, and vitamin
D can be found in certain
dairy products, including pas-
ture-raised eggs and grass-fed
cows milk, and can be gener-
ated when men and women
get enough sunlight. Other
healthy sources of vitamin D
include salmon, light tuna
packed in oil, sardines, and
sun-grown mushrooms.

T
he tooth contains the
pulp (nerve) in the
center, which is made
up of nerves and blood ves-
sels. It provides feeling, as
well as new cells that repair
the tooth. Diseases of this
area are hidden inside the
tooth, diagnosed by symp-
toms, special tests, and X-
rays. Injury to the pulp can
cause pulpitis, which causes
sensitivity to different
degrees.
Injury to the dental pulp
causes changes that build up
over time and destroy the
nerve. Most of the time it is
caused by deep tooth decay
(bacteria), deep fillings,
cracked teeth, broken fillings,
or trauma. If it is a mild
injury, inflammation will
occur and many times the
pulp will repair itself. The
tooth will be sensitive to hot
and cold things, but this
should go away in a short
period of time. If a long-
standing injury is left without
treatment, the tooths pulp
will die. Sometimes the pulp
dies without any symptoms
and may only be detected if
the tooth breaks, turns dark,
or shows up on an X-ray.
Reversible pulpitis is
mild inflammation and is
capable of healing when
treated by a dentist.
Symptoms and signs include:
1.Sensitivity to cold, sweets,
and sometimes heat
2.Pain stops in a few seconds
3.Pain is short and sharp but
doesnt occur by itself
4.Pain caused by extreme tem-
peratures, not mild ones
Irreversible pulpitis is
not capable of healing; the
tooths pulp dies and infec-
tion soon follows. Symptoms
include:
1.Lingering pain from hot or
cold
2.Initial sharp pain to cold or
hot
3.Pain from mild temperatures
4.A dull ache or throbbing pain
5.Spontaneous pain that wakes
you up at night or when you lie
down
6.Swollen face
Part 4 of this series will con-
clude with diagnosis and
treatment.

intake can be very beneficial,
especially for men and women
over the age of 50, who are at
greater risk of diabetes, hyper-
tension and chronic kidney
disease. But cutting back on
sodium intake takes more
than just throwing the salt
shaker away. Processed foods,
soups, canned goods, salad
dressings, condiments such as
mustard and ketchup, and
breakfast cereals are just a few
of the many products that may
contain alarming amounts of
sodium. Thats important to
note, as excess sodium
increases blood pressure by
holding excess fluid in the
body. That excess fluid puts an
added burden on the heart,
potentially increasing a per-
sons risk of stroke, heart fail-
ure, osteoporosis, cancer, and
kidney disease. The problem
with cutting back on sodium is
that salt is so often relied on
to make foods taste better, and
many people find salt-free
foods bland. But the rewards
of reducing sodium intake are
so significant that its worth
making the adjustment, espe-
cially for men and women
over the age of 50.
No one is too old or too
young to embrace a nutritious
diet. But men and women
over the age of 50 are in a
unique position to vastly
improve their quality of life by
adopting a low-sodium diet
that is rich in vitamins and
minerals.

S
ome elderly family
members want to
remain independent
and live out their lives in their
own homes. While nursing
homes and assisted living
facilities suit some, getting
home care and living inde-
pendently is the best option
for some of our senior loved
ones. Here are ways to help
them remain independent:
1.Purchase a cell phone for
your elderly family member. A
cell phone allows them to
keep in touch with family
members and maintain a net-
work of friends. They can also
use their phone to schedule
their own appointments and
make their own arrangements,
which allows them to feel
autonomous.
2.Purchase a home alert sys-
tem. Devices like Life Alert
are one way that an elderly
family member can remain
living in his or her own home
with confidence. The elderly
person wears a necklace while
in their home and there is a
button on the necklace. If the
elderly person needs assis-
tance of any kind they just
have to push this button and a
live person on the other end
can obtain the necessary serv-
ices.
3.Cook their own meals. Take
them to the grocery store once
a week to pick out items they
would like to cook for them-
selves. Whether its breakfast,
lunch or dinner, allow them to
cook and feed themselves
their favorite meals. This
gives them the independence
to choose their food and pre-
pare it themselves.
4.Allow them to arrange their
transportation. Many cities
have local elderly transporta-

f you have a flexible spend-
ing account (FSA) to set
aside pre-tax dollars to pay
for out-of-pocket medical
expenses, youll be interested in
this latest FSA change.
Employers can modify these
plans to allow up to $500 of
unused amounts at year-end to
be carried over into the follow-
ing year. Now health FSAs can
either have a 2.5-month grace
period or the $500 carryover to
help alleviate the forfeiture of
unspent set-asides at year-end.
A rule affecting the taxa-
tion of tips went into effect this
year. Restaurants often add an
automatic gratuity to the bill
for large parties. If these
amounts were treated as tips,
they would be paid to restau-
rant workers along with their
other tips, and the workers
would be responsible for report-
ing them as income to the IRS.
Now the IRS says automatic
gratuities will be treated as a
service charge which, like
regular wages, will be subject to
withholding by the employer.

for companies with 50 to 99
workers. To benefit from this
extension, employers must cer-
tify that they have not laid off
employees in order to come
under the 100 employee
threshold.
Partnerships and other
pass-through entities should
be ready for increased scrutiny
by the IRS this year. According
to the IRS, the increasing num-
ber and complexity of pass-
through entities makes these
business forms candidates for
audit focus in 2014.
The IRS is again issuing
warnings about tax scams. In
the latest phone scam, the
caller claims to be from the IRS
reporting taxes due which must
be paid immediately with a pre-
paid debit card or wire transfer.
Individuals who dont pay up
are threatened with arrest or
loss of driving or business
licenses. Dont respond in any
way to these scams; instead for-
ward the e-mail to
phishing@irs.gov.

og disabilities could
be a result of illness,
physical injury or
accidents. Just because your
dog is disabled, it should not
stop you from enjoying its
company. As a dog owner, it is
your responsibility to help the
dog live a normal life and cope
with the situation. Below
are a few tips to keep your
dog happy and healthy,
even with its disability.
Assist their move-
ments. Dogs who suffer
from mobility problems,
such as hip dysplasia,
arthritis, spinal disorders,
DM in dogs or other med-
ical problems that affects
their hind legs will need
plenty of help moving
around. To make things
easier for you and the dog, you
can buy a special leash that
supports its torso and back
legs. There are also other tools
that assist in mobility prob-
lems, such as dog wheelchairs
that can be strapped to its
back. If you are going to take
the dog out to the vet, you
will need to carry it into the
car since it might have a hard
time getting in. You can also
use a small and improvised
ramp that will help it walk
into the car.
Watch their weight. Like
humans, overweight dogs
have a higher chance of get-
ting sick compared to dogs
that stay within their ideal
weight. Exercise and a bal-
anced diet are the only things
you really need to worry about
when it comes to your dogs
weight. Make sure it gets the
right amount of exercise by
taking it out for walks or jogs.
You can also let it run around
in an open area like your
backyard, front lawn or park.
Never overfeed or underfeed
your dog. Use a good dog food
mix or you can feed them
meat that you prepared.
Check with your vet about
your dogs ideal weight and
the best type of diet you can
give it.
Regular visits to the doc-
tor. Visiting the vet regular-
ly helps you and your dogs
doctor track the dogs condi-
tion and see if its improving
or not. By going to the vet,
you can detect any problems
and stop them before they
develop even further. The
vet can also advise you on
medical procedures and other
remedies that can help or cure
your dog. They can also offer
medical screening for some
genetic illnesses like DM in
dogs.
Talk to your dog. Talking
to your dog is actually a form
of therapy for the both of you.
Massage and gently rub its fur
and spend some time with it.
Sometimes, human touch
works better and is more calm-
ing and relaxing compared to
any other type of medication.

A
s much as parents
may anticipate their
childrens bedtime as
a point in the day when they
can finally enjoy some peace
and quiet, there are those
moms and dads who dread
bedtime, which can be
frustrating for even the
most level-headed par-
ents. Parents may face a
host of issues at bedtime
each night, but each
requires patience and
perseverance so bad
behaviors can be bro-
ken once and for all.
Wired Children
What parent has-
nt experienced a child
who is too excited to go
to bed? Experts say that,
depending on their age,
children need 9 to 11 hours of
sleep every night. Most chil-
dren should be in bed by 8
p.m. to get the sleep their bod-
ies need. If you miss the win-
dow of time to get them in
bed, you may enter the over-
tired and wired period. A con-
sistent bedtime and wake time
can help set the pace for
happy kids who are sleepy
when they should be. Their
bodies will adjust to the
schedule, and over time they
will involuntarily become
tired when the time is right.
Over-stimulation
Children have many
more toys and recreational
activities at their disposal
than their parents and grand-
parents did when they were
children. The presence of
these devices, including video
game consoles and personal
tablet computers, may not
make for an ideal sleep envi-
ronment. Sleep therapists
advise that television watch-
ing and activities that engage
the mind a good deal should
be ceased prior to bed and
replaced with more relaxing
activities. This can include
listening to soothing music or
reading a few pages of a
favorite story. Avoid activities
that will increase energy lev-
els, such as exercise or rough-
housing, before bed.
The Bed Hog
There are plenty of par-
ents who embrace the concept
of the family bed, where
everyone sleeps comfortably
together. However, those who
want their beds to be their pri-
vate domain may be put off
and disturbed by small feet
kicking them in the night. But
when faced with a midnight
temper tantrum, many parents
relent and let their child
climb into their bed. This can
cause a pattern of behavior
that is difficult to break.
Sleep training involves
getting toddlers or older chil-
dren accustomed to sleeping
in their own beds again. It
may begin by a parent camp-
ing out in the childs room to
provide security. Over a peri-
od of days, the parent gradual-
ly moves closer to the door
and then out of the room
entirely once the child can
comfortably sleep solo in his
or her room. Initially, the
process may be uncomfortable
for kids and parents alike. But
eventually it may solidify good
sleeping habits.
Inconsistency
A routine lets children
known when it is time to go to
sleep. Lacking a consistent
schedule may not provide the
physical cues that it is time to
go to bed. Adhere to a routine
each and every night so chil-
dren become trained to go to
bed at a particular time. This
routine may include brushing
teeth, picking out pajamas
and then snuggling together
for a few minutes. Children
are creatures of habit, and
knowing what to expect will
help set them up for sleeping
success.
Safety Issues
Some parents cannot get
a good nights sleep because
they worry about their chil-
dren rising in the middle of

the night and wandering the
house unattended or even

those concerns. Placing a
secure gate at the doorway of
the childs room can limit
roaming, while alarms placed

to open a window or exit the

of RVs, but the largest ones
tend to be the most expensive.
Some RVs have an engine and
are driven like a bus, while
other models hitch to the
back of a truck or van. If you
will be towing an RV, you
must be certain the car or
truck doing the towing is
equipped to tow a vehicle the
weight and size of your partic-
ular RV.
Some RVs have fixed
dimensions, while others
expand, either manually or
electronically, pushing out
walls to provide even more
interior room when the RV is
parked. RVs have different
floor plans, and there are
many different models to fit a
buyers needs.
Many RVs are equipped
with no frills furnishings, but
there are models that feature
top-of-the-line appliances and
fixtures. Its possible to get
granite countertops and cher-
ry cabinets in an RV, but such
accessories will increase the
cost of the vehicle.
Upholstered sofas and dining
room banquettes may be
upgraded to leather. Some
RVs have an additional kitch-
enette built into the exterior
of the unit for easy access
when barbecuing or cooking
at a campsite.
How you plan to use the
RV should also be considered
prior to purchasing one. Will

luten allergies affect
millions of people
worldwide. Roughly
2 million people in the
United States alone have
Celiac disease, an autoim-
mune disease that impacts the
digestive system. Those who
must avoid gluten need to rely
on alternative diets to remain
healthy, and such diets often
left St. Patricks Day revelers
looking far and wide for foods
they could safely digest but
still enjoy all the festivities of
St. Pattys Day. But now any-
one can enjoy the sounds and
tastes of St. Patricks Day with
just a few modifications.
Tasty breads
No St. Patricks Day cel-
ebration is complete without a
healthy portion of traditional
Irish soda bread. And thanks
to the wide variety of alterna-
tive flours on the market, a
batch of bread can be made
that is acceptable for someone
with a gluten allergy or Celiac
disease. Try this soda bread
recipe, courtesy of www.
Celiac.com.
Gluten-Free Irish Soda
Bread
1 cup brown rice flour
1/3 cup tapioca flour
1/3 cup potato starch
1 teaspoon xanthan gum
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon unflavored gela-
tin
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
2/3 cup buttermilk
6 tablespoons melted butter
1 tablespoon honey
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup raisins or currants,
soaked in hot water for 10
minutes
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 F
and line a standard loaf pan or
baking dish with parchment
paper. In a large bowl, com-
bine all dry ingredients until
well-incorporated. In a second
bowl, stir together buttermilk,
butter, honey, egg and soaked
raisins.
Hollow out a small well
in the dry ingredients and
slowly pour in the wet mix-
ture. Stir until combined and
sticky. Form into a loaf and
transfer to baking pan. Cook
for 35-40 minutes until a knife
inserted in the middle comes
out clean.
Let cool and remove
from parchment-line dish.
Potatoes and more ...
Potatoes are naturally
gluten-free so it is safe to
include any and all potato
varieties in your St. Patricks
Day feast. Mix up a large bowl
of mashed potatoes or boil
potatoes to go along with a
traditional corned beef.
Colcannon, or a potato and
cabbage dish, can be enjoyed
without worry.
Those preparing Irish
sausages (bangers) can substi-
tute rice or potato flour for the
bread crumbs included in
some recipes. Otherwise,
forego the breadcrumbs alto-
gether.
Irish stew is another tra-
ditional dish that can be made
without any substitutions.
Lamb, potatoes, carrots, and
herbs are the primary ingredi-
ents of Irish stew, so it is easy
to stick to a gluten-free diet
and enjoy this St. Patricks
Day staple.
The Irish recognize the
importance of a hearty break-
fast. The main part of an Irish
breakfast consists of a fry up,
which includes meat, bread,
vegetables, eggs, pudding, and
other ingredients that are
shallow-fried in a pan. In
place of wheat bread, use a
potato bread or another
gluten-free variety in the fry
up. This will provide the tex-
ture without the gluten.
St. Patricks Day is right
around the bend, and those
who have dietary restrictions
due to gluten intolerance can
still enjoy many of the dishes
synonymous with this beloved
holiday.

you be spending time cooking
meals and sleeping inside, or
will it mainly be used as a stor-
age unit for your camping
gear? Do you plan on taking
extended vacations and desire
all the comforts of home?
Defining these goals will help
you find the right RV for you.
Another thing to consid-
er is renting an RV for a day or
two to get a feel for driving it
and what it is like to spend a
night inside. You may be able
to determine if you need more
or less of a mobile home when
you ultimately decide to pur-
chase.
Make sure everything
works before you drive the
RV off of the lot. Repairs can
be expensive, and you do not
want to be stuck with a
lemon when youre on the
road. Find out if there are
any roadside assistance pack-
ages that can be negotiated
to offer you peace of mind
with your first RV.
The decision of whether
or not to purchase an RV
requires ample forethought.
Comparing a number of differ-
ent models and designs and
weighing personal needs can
give buyers a good idea of
which RV is right for them.

Next time you hit the drive-thru for your morning coffee, a quick bite for lunch or
with the kids after school, pay the bill for the car behind you! Your kindness could
make a difference in someones day!
To get started, download a Drive Thru Difference Note
at star991.com. Print out a few copies and take them with
you when you go about your day. Hand it to the cashier to
give to the person in the car behind you. Its a great little
note to let them know you care and a perfect opportunity
to introduce them to the New Star 99.1...and maybe, just
maybe, introduce them to Jesus.
We would love to hear your stories!

May your blessings outnumber
The shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you
Wherever you go.
~Irish Blessing
Oh, Paddy, dear, an did ye hear the
news thats goin round?
The shamrock is forbid by law to grow
on Irish ground!
No more St. Patricks Day well keep,
his colour cant be seen,
For theres a cruel law agin the
Wearin o the green.
~Author Unknown
When law can stop the blades of
grass from growin as they grow,
An when the leaves in summer time
their color dare not show,
Then I will change the color, too, I
wear in my caubeen;
But till that day, plaise God, Ill stick to
the Wearin o the Green.
~Author Unknown
May the Irish hills caress you.
May her lakes and rivers bless you.
May the luck of the Irish enfold you.
May the blessings of Saint Patrick
behold you.
~Irish Blessing
So, success attend St. Patricks fist,
For hes a saint so clever;
Oh! he gave the snakes and
toads a twist,
And bothered them forever!
~Henry Bennett
Saint Patrick was a gentleman, who
through strategy and stealth
Drove all the snakes from Ireland,
heres a drink to his health!
But not too many drinks, lest we lose
ourselves and then
Forget the good Saint Patrick, and
see them snakes again!
~Author Unknown
Never iron a four-leaf clover, because
you dont want to press your luck.
~Author Unknown
Oh, the music in the air!
An the joy thats ivrywhere -
Shure, the whole blue vault of heaven
is wan grand triumphal arch,
An the earth below is gay
Wid its tender green th-day,
Fur the whole world is Irish on the
Seventeenth o March!
~Thomas Augustin Daly
When Irish eyes are smiling, sure tis
like a morn in spring.
In the lilt of Irish laughter you can
hear the angels sing,
When Irish hearts are happy all the
world seems bright and gay,
And when Irish eyes are smiling,
sure, they steal your heart away.
~Chauncey Olcott and George Graff,
Jr. (lyrics), Ernest R. Ball (music)
He was a terror to any snake that
came in his path, whether it was the
cold, slimy reptile sliding along the
ground or the more dangerous snake
that oppresses men through false
teachings. And he drove the snakes
out of the minds of men, snakes of
superstition and brutality and cruelty.
~Arthur Brisbane
Oh, while a man may dream awake,
On gentle Irish ground,
Tis Paradise without the snake -
Thats easy to be found.
~Frederick Langbridge
For tis green, green, green, where
the ruined towers are gray,
And its green, green, green, all the
happy night and day;
Green of leaf and green of sod,
green of ivy on the wall,
And the blessed Irish shamrock with
the fairest green of all.
~Mary Elizabeth Blake
