Recommended RC Jacket Thickness and Reinforcement used in Repair of RC Spirally Reinforced Concrete Column Partially and /or Fully

Damaged, Corroded or with Loss of Confinement

Magdy Bakry Department of Civil Engineering , Al-Azhar University Abstract
RC Jackets are extensively used in repair, strengthening, retrofitting and rehabilitation of RC columns. They offer a cheap alternative to other repair techniques like steel and FRP Jacketing when open space permits its application. In case of RC columns partially or totally damaged a need for repair technique to restore the original column capacity (without any increase in original strength) is strongly needed. In this paper based on ACI 318-08 code for concrete buildings and by developing an excel sheet the required RC jacket thickness, percentage of vertical reinforcement and transverse reinforcement s (spirals) for practically all different grades of existing columns concrete strength encountered in engineering practice and for steel yield strength values of 360 and 415 MPa have been given. The present study also covers all possible sizes of existing spirally reinforced columns in typical concrete buildings under practically all vertical loads levels. Key words : Reinforced Concrete , Columns , Repair , Jacket .

1. Introduction
In the present study it has been assumed that the range of existing columns concrete strength fc = 12 - 20 MPa and the yield strength of vertical and transverse reinforcement Fy = 360 MPa and 415 MPa; the vertical reinforcement ratio in existing columns has been asuumed a minimum 1%. On the other hand concrete strength of RC jacket has been taken as fc= 24 MPa ( fcu = 30 MPa) and steel ratio as 1% which is the minimum according to ACI 3118-08 code, also steel yield strength fy values of 360 MPa and 415 MPa have been adopted in the present study.

2. ACI 318-08 Proposed Equation for Calculation of RC Jackets Cross Sectional area and Vertical Reinforcement
The required cross sectional area of columns jacket is given by ACI equation

Where Pu = applied ultimate load on column or jacket

Agjacket = gross sectional area of RC jacket;

= vertical steel ratio, taken 1% fy = yield strength of steel Also, total gross sectional area of concrete column including jacket

Where Di is existing column diameter Also, after sizing RC jacket thickness tjacket actual Agt becomes

Vertical steel reinforcement ratio is taken

As jackt = 0.01 Ag jacket

3. Cases of existing columns conditions in need to RC jacketing as a repair technique 3.1. Columns showing buckled shape/major cracking or severe steel corrosion (more than 25%) and loss of confinement .
It should be pointed out that in case of existing column suffer from cracks and/or excessive deflection and in case that the residual capacity of existing column is less than 45% of its original strength, the existing column should be fully jacketed and according to ACI 318-08 for oversized spirally reinforced column the minimum jacket s steel ratio is 1% and the minimum number of longitudinal bars is 6.

3.2. Columns showing total destruction and/or complete failure

Columns showing total destruction need to be reconstructed based on the original design of the building and is also taken 1% as a minimum and the minimum number of longitudinal bars is 6. In both study cases the RC jacket has been assumed to carry the entire applied axial load on existing column.

4. Spiral reinforcement of RC jacket

The volumetric transverse reinforcement ratio s for hollow jacket is defined as follows Percentage of spiral steel (s) = volume of in one loop / volume of concrete core for a pitch s

or

where

as is the cross sectional area of the spiral bar, ds is the diameter of the spiral bar,
D is the outside diameter of the existing column with RC jacket,

Di is the diameter of existing column without RC jacket, s is pitch of spiral, Dc is diameter of the outer core out to out of the outer spiral, Dci is diameter of the inner core out to out of the inner spiral
5. Sizes and spacing of spirals
1- for cast in place construction, size of spirals shall be not less than 10 mm 2- clear spacing between spirals shall not exceed 75 mm, not less than 25 mm. 3- anchorage of spiral reinforcement shall be provided by 1.5 extra turns of spiral bar . 4- splices of spiral reinforcement shall be lap splices of 48 mm or welded .

ds but not less than 300

6. Minimum spiral percentage s min of RC jacket

A minimum value of s min is given as follows

Where fy is the specified yield strength of spiral reinforcement but not more than 415 MPa

Where

Ag Ac

Gross concrete area of RC jacket is area of outer concrete core, where

Aci is area of inner concrete core, where

It should be pointed out that it is highly recommended not to use spiral steel more than given by equation.

7. Practical recommendations for RC Jacket thickness

Based on the present study, it has been been found that for existing column design strength fc ranges from 12 MPa to 20 MPa and for jacket concrete strength fc = 24 MPa the following findings could be utilized for sizing RC jacket thickness accurately.
