Callington Foodbank
Generous customers at Callington's Tesco donated nearly 2500 worth of food to help hungry locals last weekend. Foodbank volunteers, including members of the Royal British Legion, handed out specially selected wish-lists of long-life foods to shoppers as part of the biggest ever food collection in the UK. In all 1486kg of food was handed in at the store, equivalent to 2496.00, with Tesco topping it up by 30% to make a grand total of 3244.80. Callington Foodbank project manager Rev David Jewell said: "We would like to give a huge thank-you to Tesco for their welcome and the opportunity to encourage the residents of Callington to donate food. We're very pleased that we've received nearly a tonne and a half of food." Tesco manager Pete Downing said: Our customers were incredibly generous when we held our last food collection in December, so were amazed to have collected an even bigger total this time around. All our colleagues and volunteers from Foodbank really enjoy the collection as it gives us a real opportunity to help local people who are in need.

Credit Where Credit is Due

I write this letter anonymously as I do not wish to gain favour, but thought I had to write to congratulate Kay of the Bulls Head in Callington. I have visited the Bulls Head a few times since Kay took over and I find it quite outstanding and amazing how quickly Kay has managed to turn the Bulls Head around. I am a fellow businessperson of Callington and I know only too well how hard the current trading conditions are, and what challenging times we live in, which makes it all the more incredible how well Kay is doing. I was in the Bulls Head recently and it was heaving with people and merriment and it reminded me of Callington in the early 80s when, during the week and especially at the weekends, the town was a bustling and vibrant place to be - and a pleasure to enjoy. It is obvious to me that Callington does not need jumped-up celebrities swaning around the town of a Portas town project. NO! What Callington needs is people like Kay along with our strong Council Team. I know that, at the time of writing, the Bulls Head is going through probate, so nothing has been settled, so I have been led to believe; but, whatever the outcome, Callington needs inspirational people of Kay's calibre, and along with our strong Callington Council team, to help and guide Callington back to where we all want it to be. So anyhow, Kay, well done and keep it up! You are doing an amazing job! PS: This was not written by Kay!!!

The latest news from your Town Council

Firstly we welcome our two new co-opted Councillors to the team, Mrs Suzan Tolman (representing our Callington Ward) and the return of Mr Rick Lumley (representing our Kelly Bray Ward). We currently have many projects on the go that would be greatly enhanced with Community involvement, so if anyone could spare a few hours please contact us. We can provide you with various options to consider, ranging from mural painting, working with the youth (CATS), Town Forum membership or being the Town Crier. come and have a chat with us about the skills you could offer.

Cornwall Council Column

During August, a survey of views will be carried out for those living on Launceston Road regarding proposed changes in the road layout and speed limit from Bowling Green to the Kelly Bray signage. This will include a proposed pedestrian refuge opposite the entrance to Launceston Road Park and extending the 30 mph speed limit from Kelly Bray to Bowling Green. You can take part in the consultation finder page of the Council or send back a response form which will be being delivered to houses along the route in the near future. Do you run a voluntary group or organisation? Are you in need of any help with funding a project? Following the start of the new Council, we now have a Community Chest fund to help local people with projects that benefit the community. So if you are looking at a new project for your community group and need some help then please contact me by email (ajlong@cornwall.gov.uk) for a form or alternatively you can download a form from the Cornwall Council website (www.cornwall.gov.uk) under the Caradon Community Network section. Finally, surgeries will recommence in September on the second and fourth Saturdays at the Town Hall from 10am to midday. If you need any assistance in the meantime, please email me in the first instance on andrew.longmk@gmail.com .

So what has been happening with the various committees...........? Outside Services In an effort to address the litter problems in Saltash Road car park new bins have been installed and further ones purchased, so please use them! We have also purchased a new picnic bench for Saltash Road Recreational field, to replace the one that was vandalised and set alight. In Launceston Road Park we had to take out the adult exercise equipment for safety purposes and the area will be grassed over. However, Councillors will be working with young people to consider other projects for this park. Reports of littering and dog fouling are being constantly reported to the Council and as a result staff will be trained on Environmental Enforcement, which will give them authority to issue Fixed Penalty Notices. The clear message from the Council is do not drop it, bin it. And with regard to the bins, you can place your dog-mess bags in the normal litter bins; it doesnt have to be a designated dog bin. Finance & General Purposes Councillors are fully aware that our lovely mural trail is now in a pretty poor state and much work is needed to return it to its former glory. With grant funding diminishing, it would be great to hear from any budding local artists that might be able to help us bring these murals back to life. The Council is looking to purchase a Community defibrillator for the town and would welcome any donations or sponsorship towards this project. So please, if you or any organisations that you are associated with, have any pennies spare please consider our plea. This Community asset may just save your life or that of a loved one. Town Hall & Premises The Town Hall kitchen has just undergone a food hygiene inspection and obtained a 5* rating (top marks) which is great news and reflects the high standards that we aim to achieve and sustain. We mentioned last month that Tamar Grow Local have recently taken occupancy of units 7,8 & 9 in the Pannier Market. They are holding their official opening on Tuesday 20th August. Unit 6 has now become occupied and will be used as an art studio. This just leaves Unit 18, formally Kittows auction room, for occupation. If you are a new business and looking for premises then please pop into Kivells for further details. Full Council A marketing sub-committee has been set up to consider and review our various means of communication with you, whether through this newsletter, the website or facebook. In view of the recent Government announcements on further massive cuts in funding, Councillors are reassured that the rise in our town precept for this municipal year was fully justifiable. Whilst it was a very hard and untrendy decision to increase our precept, this has and will protect us going forward with regard to sustaining service provision. So many towns and villages are seeing items being cut, relocated or reduced whilst we are working hard to sustain, increase and constantly improve.

Andrew Long
Cornwall Councillor Callington Division

PDSA Free Pet Check is coming to Kelly Bray on Friday 30th August from 9am till 4pm The popular animal charity PDSA is coming to East Cornwall with their mobile service at just 4 locations over 4 days in August. Their van will park up all day at the gateway to the playing field on the left at the bottom of Lady Beam Court, Kelly Bray, PL17 8BU. They will give free health checks to dogs and are offering advice on the care of other popular pets. In addition they can provide some preventive treatments such as microchipping, nail-clipping, ear-cleaning and dental products if required. This will be part of a community day being organised for the residents at Lady Beam Court which will include childrens games, circus skills and a teddy bears picnic to which the mayor has been invited.

Hosts needed for International guests. Make the world a little friendlier! Many adult international students at universities in the UK find it difficult being far from home and adjusting to a new culture. HOSTs volunteer hosts invite students to their homes to spend a short time experiencing the everyday way of life here, meeting new people and exploring local areas. Hosts meet people from across the world, learn about different countries and do their part for international friendship. More invitations which can be for a day, a weekend, or for Christmas are always needed. Hosts do not need to live near a university. Please see www.hostuk.org and get in touch if you would like to welcome an interesting guest. HOSTs regional organiser is Margaret Stevens 01736 719090 but local residents, Jane and Ian Richards, have hosted for many years and find the experience immensely rewarding. Paws for Coffee Morning
The weather was beautiful for Our Paws for Coffee Morning with Finn, my Pets As Therapy dog, there to meet and greet! An inspiring talk was given by Nick Ford of the Memory Caf bringing home the difficulties some people have to endure. We had an excellent demonstration by Hearing Dog puppies with their handlers. The Bring and Buy stall was busy all morning; the remainder of the goods will go to Tregarland Care Home in Tavistock, raising money for their Summer fete and Dog Show; left-over books go to The Carers Trust at the Co-op. In just under two hours the Total raised was 577.15. 411.73 will be divided between Pets As Therapy and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People; The Memory Caf - 107.20; The Callington and District Food Bank (26.65 kilo of food) = 45.30; and The Pet collection (7.6 kilo) 12.92. Our extreme thanks to Western Power Distribution, South West Water, Ginsters, Tesco & Co-op for all their kind donations. Also to Callington Primary School for allowing us to collect for Pets As Therapy at their school Fair which raised 14.04. A big thank-you to all who came along and generously supported these charities and to all the many helpers who worked tirelessly to make all this possible. Thank you.

Thanks from the Pannier Market

Thanks to everyone who supported 'A Festival of Art', both artists and visitors. There were well over two hundred visitors and seven successful artists selling some of their pieces. The exhibition was an eclectic and vibrant mix of work in different mediums and also photographs from artists in and around Callington. The visitors favourite was 'Bluebell Woods' by Mr. Ken Shaw, a local resident, and he will be presented with a bouquet of flowers in due course. Missed this exhibition? Don't worry, there will be another one staged in the Autumn - for more information phone 01579 389331 or pop into the florist in the Pannier Market. Thank you Jane Cornbill

CALLINGTON & SALTASH COMMUNITY ACTION THROUGH SPORT (CATS) VOLUNTEERS FOR STEERING GROUP
Callington & Saltash CATS is an active local charity that aims to support and reward young people making a difference in their local communities. We meet approximately once every two months, either in Callington or Saltash, and our partners include the Youth Service, Callington and Saltash Secondary Schools, the Police and both Town Councils. We also host an annual awards ceremony to recognise the important contribution young people make. We are currently looking to recruit volunteers/individuals to join our Steering Group, either as officers or committee members, to further develop and shape this exciting work in the area. Please have a look at our branch page on the main CATS website www.communityactionthroughsport.org to see some of the events and activities we are involved in. If you are interested in getting involved in this local group, please send an expression of interest letter Karen Gold, CATS Secretary, Callington Community College, Launceston Road, Callington, PL17 7DR by Monday 22nd July. If you are a young person who is interested in finding out about projects and opportunities in the area, please contact Michelle Roberts 01579 386120 at Callington Community College.

WHERE IS THE COMMUNITY CENTRE? NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW!!

I run the Spiritualist Church at the Community Centre and I am always having people and mediums phoning me to find out where it is and how to get there. When they ask people in the street, nobody knows where it is. WE NEED IT SIGNPOSTED FROM THE TOP OF THE ROAD. At the present time there is Bingo on a Monday afternoon, whist drives fortnightly on Monday evenings, whist drives on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, Spiritualist Church fortnightly on Wednesday evenings and the other Wednesday is an open circle, - and also the odd occasional thing at other times. The hall could be used for many other occasions like children's parties, table-top sales, knitting/sewing/craft classes, plus many more other things. It is 10 to rent for a day. We need help to keep the place open, which needs more people using it. The Community Centre is in Coronation Close; its a bungalow in the bottom righthand corner stood on its own.

Catch 22

Director Mike Nichols and writer-actor Buck Henry followed their enormous hit The Graduate (1967) with this timely adaptation of Joseph Heller's satiric antiwar novel. Haunted by the death of a young gunner, all-too-sane Capt. Yossarian (Alan Arkin) wants out of the rest of his WW II bombing missions, but publicity-obsessed commander Colonel Cathcart (Martin Balsam) and his yes man, Colonel Korn (Buck Henry), keep raising the number of missions that Yossarian and his comrades are required to fly............
