Read a speech Floods have become common nowadays. Floods are usually caused by the wind, rain or air pressure. Floods can also be caused by the destruction to the natural environment as a result of human activities and behaviour. Several steps can be taken to prevent floods. Below is the speech delivered by a student during a World Environment Day celebration. Read the speech to find out more about floods. FLOODS Flood can be caused by nature or caused by man. Monson floods, for example, are caused by the forces of nature such as the wind, rain and air pressure. It is impossible to control or prevent such floods. Flash floods in urban area are caused by man. They occur mainly due to human activities and behaviour which damage the nature environment. The natural environment has its own drainage system. The leaves and roots of many trees help to protect the topsoil. They also slow down the flow of water on slopes. The rainwater sinks into the top soil and forms streams. The streams drain the water slowly into rivers which flow into the sea. The rapid development of towns and cities damages this natural drainage system. When forests and hills are cleared, the topsoil is eroded. Without the soil and trees on the slopes, water can flow very quickly down a hill. During a heavy downpour, rainwater gushes into a town. The result is a dangerous flash flood. The most effective way to prevent such floods is to reduce and control human activities that harm the natural environment. Developers should take measures to protect the landscape and not use every centimetre of land for building and roads. They can also build wider drains and underground tunnels to ensure the proper drainage of water. Irresponsible dumping of rubbish is another serious cause of flash floods. Debris from factories, construction sites and houses along river banks can obstruct the flow of rivers. People in towns may also dump rubbish which clog up drains. All these actions contribute to the frequency of flash floods.
