Career

San Pedro came from a family with musical roots and he began his career early. When he was still in his late teens, he succeeded his deceased grandfather as the local church organist. By then, he had already composed songs, hymns and two complete masses for voices and orchestra. After studying with several prominent musicians in the Philippines, he took advanced composition training with Bernard Wagenaar of the Netherlands. He also studied harmony and orchestration under Vittorio Giannini and took classes at Juilliard in 1947. His other vocation was teaching. He has taught at the Ateneo de Manila University, virtually all the major [citation needed] music conservatories in Manila , and at the College of Music of the University of the Philippines, Diliman, where he retired as a full professor in 1978. He later received the title Professor Emeritus from [citation needed] the University in 1979. He also became a faculty member of the Centro Escolar University Conservatory of Music in Manila.

National Artist
On May 9, 1991, President Corazon C. Aquino created San Pedro a National Artist of the Philippines for [1] Music.

Personal Life
He married Gertrudes Daz with whom he had five children: Rhodora, Bienvenido, Mara Conchita, Mara Cristina and Lucio, Jr.

Death
San Pedro died of cardiac arrest on March 31, 2002 in Quezon City, at the age of 89. Many peers from the Order of National Artists attended his tribute at the Tanghalang Pambansa, including:Napolen Abueva, Daisy Avellana, Leonor Gokingco, Nick Joaqun, Arturo Luz, Jos Maceda, and Andrea Veneracin. He is buried in his hometown of Angono, Rizal.

FELIPE DE LEON Music (1997) Felipe Padilla De Leon, composer, conductor, and scholar, Filipinized western music forms, a feat aspired for by Filipino composers who preceded him.The prodigious body of De Leon's musical compositions, notably the sonatas, marches and concertos have become the full expression of the sentiments and aspirations of the Filipino in times of strife and of peace, making him the epitome of a people's musician. He is the recipient of various awards and distinctions: Republic Cultural Heritage Award, Doctor of Humanities from UP, Rizal Pro-Patria Award, Presidential Award of Merit, Patnubay ng Kalinangan Award, among others. De Leon's orchestral music include Mariang Makiling Overture (1939), Roca Encantada, symphonic legend (1950), Maynila Overture (1976), Orchesterstuk (1981); choral music like Payapang Daigdig, Ako'y Pilipino, Lupang Tinubuan, Ama Namin; and songs Bulaklak, Alitaptap, Mutya ng Lahi.

Felipe de Len (died 1728) was a Spanish painter of the Baroque period active in Seville. He imitated the style of Murillo in painting devotional pictures, and in producing copies of the master. He died at Seville. He is presumed to be the brother of the painter Cristbal de Len.
