Maqbool 1

Maqbool, Zohaib James Wilson RHET 1312 Feb 11, 2014 Rhetorical analysis of an advertisement This ad, for Subway Ramadan, shows a picture of subway delivering halal foods in Ramadan Kareem. On the top of the ad is the text Ramadan Mubarak. On the bottom of this ad is the text Open until 1.00am. On the right side of this ad is a star shaped box with the text All meats are halal. On the very bottom of this ad is the text reading: Halal certified meats are only available at participating subway stores. The thesis for this advertisement is: Eat fresh and halal certified meats in Ramadan, only on subway. The purpose is to convince the audience to come to subway. The intended audience for this advertisement is Muslims. The picture of this sub sandwich in the ad is something Muslims can relate to. The sandwich itself looks fresh which could possibly make Muslims to try their subs in Ramadan. The chicken and other veggies in this sandwich significantly make it look fresh. The dipping sauce will be the one which will create a positive impression of having fresh foods at subway. Furthermore, the bread seems quite fresh and crunchy which symbolizes its freshness and feels like it just came out of oven. Chicken seem to be grilled on low heat. Also, there is only one meat and rest are veggies which clearly means there is no pork or ham in it.

By looking at this picture, it will be concluded that the sandwich leaves a sentimental message to Muslims who want to eat fresh and halal meat. Furthermore, Muslims are awake until late at night after breaking their fast and eat until time is over. In this picture subway also sadly keeps the store opened to serve halal and fresh meats to Muslims. It feels like subway stores have been encountering bankruptcy for a long time and now its time to cover up those losses and offer more fresh and certified halal foods. We know that we have issue of not having enough subway halal stores but those we already have are more innovative and advanced stores. These stores will eventually have more stores all over the country with a lot more convenience. Since subway chain was founded in Connecticut, USA, in 1965 and had been concerned but there was no halal subway store opened by that time. In 2007, we had our first halal subway store opened in July 2007 in Walthamstow. Now its the first step towards giving Muslims their rights to eat halal and fresh foods. It is one more step towards making Muslims getting their halal foods more conveniently on most reliable subway stores. Its more convenient to eat at subway because they have fresh and halal certified foods. All meats in subway halal stores are certified by the Islamic Foundation of Ireland (I.F.I). The Islamic Foundation of Ireland (I.F.I.) has been involved since 1980 as the certifying authority for Halal meat exported from Ireland to Muslim countries. The text presented in this argument is more like a san serif font. The color in this ad is more like a green and white. White mostly means whole, pure, or clean and green symbolizes peaceful environment. Green color is an emotionally positive color and heart satisfier color. If we look at this ad we will realize that this picture has a background with a green color which

obviously establishes pathos in this ad. As pathos describes pity or sadness, so having this green background with a sandwich undoubtedly magnetizes Muslims towards itself. They will surely look at this ad and eagerly go to subway and try their remarkable Ramadan offer. The text used in this ad illustrates the logos. Its quite reasonable saying, Open until 1:00am because Ramadan is the best time for subway to make their business since Muslims are awake and spend most of their time in eating with their friends and family after fasting all day long. The advertisement makes a strong case for ethos. The words Halal and Fresh communicates that subway has long lasting reputation. Its quite simple to interpret that subway is a reliable store that supplies fresh and halal meats. This ad also I believe that this advertisement is effective. It relies on Muslims with their families in Ramadan Mubarak, with their desires to eat fresh and halal foods on subway. This advertisement is aimed at only Muslims who have money to spend in Ramadan with their family to eat certified halal meats.
