Petroleum Systems Quick Look for Petrel Version 2010.1

Quick-Look Petroleum Charge Assessments

Product Features

Petroleum Systems Quick Look for Petrel (PSQL) is an easy-to-use tool for fast investigations and as such is an entry-level petroleum systems evaluation software. It forms the first step toward rigorous 3D petroleum systems modeling (using Schlumbergers PetroMod software). Some of the key functionalities include: Drainage area calculation: How large is the area from which petroleum can migrate to a specific play or prospect? Source rock maturity and petroleum generation: Can sufficient amounts of petroleum be generated in an area of interest? Flash calculation methods for 2-phase/2-component PVT controlled calculations: What are the hydrocarbon phases (liquid or vapor) in subsurface and at surface conditions? Petroleum migration: What are the preferred petroleum migration directions in a regional carrier system? Accumulation location and size Open or closed fault effects Seal integrity: How much of the migrated petroleum can be retained in a trap? Charge volume uncertainty: How do uncertainties in the data affect the results of the analysis?

Assessment can be performed during all stages of exploration, from frontier basins and play concepts with limited data or well control to wellexplored areas and prospects. Petroleum Systems Quick Look for Petrel uses PetroMod flash calculation methods for 2-phase/2-component PVT-controlled calculations of in-situ hydrocarbon phases and compositions in reservoirs at subsurface temperatures and pressures. Calculations at surface conditions are made for any selected accumulation to determine API gravities, GOR values, and other properties. The calculated transformation ratio attribute map is based on the simplified temperature history used in Petroleum Systems Quick Look and shows the quantitative transformation of the original organic material based on the total organic carbon content and hydrogen index in the source rock. Petroleum Systems Quick Look for Petrel evaluates the seal integrity by comparing fluid buoyancy pressure with the capillary entry pressure. The software enables probabilistic estimates of hydrocarbon volumes. The impact of faults can also be estimated. Fault data is integrated by using

fault-horizons intersections, and faults can be modeled as either open or closed to vapor and liquid flow. Petroleum Systems Quick Look for Petrels uncertainty analysis function provides flexible options to calculate the volume of potential accumulations using probabilistic estimates of different uncertainty distributions. It calculates for example the amount of hydrocarbons within a closure with 10/50/90 % probability.

Outstanding Benefits of the Combination of Petrel and PSQL

Petrel facilitates communication between domains and disciplines by data consolidation and visualization onto one common canvas. With Petroleum Systems Quick Look this can be extended into the exploration domain with respect to Charge, Trap, and Reservoir. The combination of Petrel with Petroleum Systems Quick Look brings together the data and results from the three dominant components of petroleum systems, static present day reservoir characterization and seal analysis (Petrel) together with source rock maturation, charge evaluation, and hydrocarbon migration (Petroleum Systems Quick Look). Petrels fast and powerful process manager workflows can be utilized for uncertainty analysis for all attributes within the petroleum system. Commonly applied risk evaluation maps can be produced, for example, play fairway, migration risk, structure certainty risk, charge risk, reservoir presence or quality risk. Following initial evaluation, further detailed petroleum systems analysis and model building may be performed using Schlumbergers PetroMod software suite. Petrel provides the basic fault and surface structures required to begin this work. Migrating data from Petrel into the PetroMod product suite is straightforward.

Who Should Use This Software?

Explorationists, who are interested in rapid analyses of their reservoir and source rock structures and how these potentially affect the understanding of generation and migration of petroleum and therefore the prospectivity in an area of interest. Specialist basin and petroleum system modelers whose responsibilities range from petroleum resource assessments (of yet to find hydrocarbons) on a regional scale, to petroleum charge risk assessments on a play or prospect scale who want to perform initial assessments (before building complete petroleum systems models).

Known Issues
Calculated accumulations and flowpaths are not visible in Petrel in map view, intersection view, interpretation view, plot view and in the Reference project tool. Accumulations on the tree under Petrels Input pane and the Show/Hide Accumulations buttons on the toolbar are not synchronized. o Workaround: If you deactivated accumulation view on the tree you might have to click the Show/hide accumulations button on the toolbar twice to display them again. The Drainage area lines are sometimes not updated in the window. The user must update the view by switching the drainage area lines off and on. PVT calculation does not work with injection point and or area calculations. The Uncertainty parameter becomes unticked when changing the type.
