ROlAnD ALLEN (1868-1947)
influential writer and apostolic leader
Roland Allen trained for ministry at Oxford and became an Anglican priest in 1893. He had two
stints in northern China working for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel. These early
difficult experiences caused him to undergo a shift in his understanding of strategies commonly
used to spread the gospel versus those he saw in the New Testament. He became an advocate of
self-supporting, self-propagating, and self-governing churches that adapted to local conditions,
rather than being merely imitations of western-style Christianity. Near the end of his life, he
became disillusioned with the established churches of his day, believing that his ideas would be
better received by future generations. His books Missionary Methods: St. Paul’s or Ours? (1912)
and The Spontaneous Expansion of the Church (1927) have become influential classics.
