Biofuels are in
the headlines these days
and the push is towards
increasing the usage of
these alternative fuels in
the fight against global
warming. They are
already being used to
some extent by millions
of car drivers around the
world and even by some
go-getting airlines, yet
many people do not really
understand what biofuels
are, or the implications of
their production on the
vast scale envisioned for
the immediate future.
B a s i c a l l y,
biofuels are made from
living plants or their
waste products as
against the more
commonly used petrol
and diesel which are
refined from oil itself, the
residue of plants that died
millions of years ago. The
most widely known
biofuels are ethanol, an
alcohol extracted from
sugar beet and biodiesel
made from vegetable
oils. Then, there is
biohydrogen made by
turning crops such as
wheat, corn and soya
beans into a liquid fuel
