For this square I used a 3,5 (E) hook and Online Linie 50 PRIMA yarn. Its a DK / 8 ply, 100% polyacrylic, 50 grams/150 meter(165 yards) yarn. Colors green and white and some red. For the red you can also use a mercerized cotton or red Christmas ribbon. The square is 5 inches. I made one before with slightly thinner yarn and a 3 mm hook and that one was 5 inches.

Start with white yarn. Rnd 1: in loop: Chain 3, 11 tr(dc) Slip stitch in 3th chain. Rnd 2: Chain 3, 2 tr(dc) in every stitch ( makes 24 stitches). End with a tr(dc) in the base of the chain 3.

With green. Rnd 3: Chain 3 and tr(dc) in same stitch,* Puff-stitch in next stitch, 2 tr(dc) in next stitch, repeat from * end with a puff-stitch and a slip stitch in the 3th chain. You should have 12 puff-stitches. PUFF STICH: Yarn over, pull up the loop for 1 cm. Yarn over, pull up the loop for 1 cm. Yarn over, pull up the loop for 1 cm etc. 5 times in total. Yarn over, make a stitch through all the threads on the hook. One dc(sc) to finish the puff stitch. Rnd 4 Rnd 4: Chain 1. Dc(sc) on every tr(dc) and 2 dc(sc) on every puff-stitch. End with a slipstitch in the chain. With white. Rnd 5: Start with chain 3 on the second dc(sc) of one of the 2 dc(sc) groups of rnd. 4.

Tr(dc) in same stitch, *1 Tr(dc) on the three next stitches, 2 Tr(dc) on the next stitch. This should be the second stitch of the 2 dc group of rnd 4. Repeat from * and end with a slip stitch in the 3 th chain.

Half double treble crochet (half treble crochet). Start as a normal double treble crochet, but pull the yarn through the last three loops to finish the stitch.

Rnd 6: chain 1. On the next stitches: 1 sc(dc), * 2 htr(hdc), 2 tr(dc), 1 half made dtr(tr) (see photo), [1dtr(tr)-chain3-1 dtr(tr)] in next stitch, 1 half made dtr(tr), 2 tr(dc), 2 htr(hdc), 4 sc(dc). Repeat from * and end with 2 sc(dc) and a slip stitch in the chain.

Rnd 7: chain 3, tr(dc) on every stitch. Corner on chain 3: [ 2 tr(dc)-chain 3- 2 tr(dc)]. End with a slip stitch in the 3th chain. Weave in loose ends.

With red: Chain 90, leaf a tail of 1 meter. You need this as reserve if the 90 chains are not enough and to make the stitches in the inner circle of the wreath. See photos. Start somewhere in the middle of the wreath. Make stitches from the bottom of the puff-stitches up to the first 2 tr(dc) group to the right of the puff-stitch. Add or undo chain stitches if necessary.

start

back

Leave the yarn on the backside and pull a loop with your hook, go to the next stitch and pull up a another loop and pull it through the loop on the hook. One stitch made. Go round. Its also possible to embroider these stitches.

The Knot To get resembling ends the knot is worked from the middle. Chain 24,* tr(dc) in 4th chain, tr(dc), htr(hdc), dc(sc) till the end. Again chain 24 and repeat from *. Leaf tails. Make the knot and use the tails to knot and sew the knot on the wreath. You can sew the knot at the bottom or at the top of the wreath. Weave in loose ends. When the knots end are to short or to long just adjust the 24 chain.

start

Some ideas: Replace the red yarn by red ribbon. Use another colour for the puff-stitches (for instance a gold Lurex thread) Replace the puff-stitches by beads.

Hope you enjoy this pattern and : MARY CHRISTMAS !!!!
