Hallowe'en Scene 1

It's party time for Ashlie and Stephen - but which costumes to choose? Transcript Stephen: OK, just the mouth to go and there we go. Wow! What do you think? Looks like Ashlie. Ashlie: Stephen, can you give me a hand here, please? Stephen: Its Hallowe'en this weekend and were getting ready for a big party. Ashlie: Well be dressing up and having fun with all the Hallowe'en traditions. Stephen: And that means weve got lots of work to do, starting with these apples and pumpkins. Ashlie: Yes, but before that we need to get our costumes. Nice pumpkin, by the way. Looks just like you! Come on then, lets get going. ..... Ashlie: So, come on then, Stephen, lets take a look at you. Stephen: Well, what do you think? Ive always fancied myself as a bit of a magician. Ashlie: Very nice. But I think itll take a little more than a costume to turn you into a wizard! Stephen: Yeah, Ive been thinking about that. They actually sell magic tricks here. I reckon I should learn a few. You know, to help with the character. Ashlie: I think it may be a little harder than you think. Magic takes a lot of practice. Stephen: Im a natural. Come on, lets have a look and see what theyve got. Hmm. And Ill need a wand, of course. Ashlie: Err, are you sure you have enough there? Stephen: I think so. Look, Ive got my wand! Whats that? Ashlie: So, do you think hell be able to do any of these tricks? Man: Well, it does require a lot of practice. And of course you also have to read the instructions very carefully. Ashlie: Oh dear. Man: It takes a lifetime to be good magician. Ashlie: Hear that, Stephen?

Stephen: What?

Word on the street | LearnEnglish | British Council | Hallowe'en Scene 1

Ashlie: It takes a lifetime to become a magician. Stephen: Oh, I dont need to be a full magician. Im a trainee. Ill be on to the big stuff in no time: catching a bullet, sawing a lady in half, disappearing lady. That reminds me, I may need an assistant. Ashlie: Dont even think about it! Come on, we need to get home so we can start preparing for the party. Stephen: And I need to start practising. Hazam Falam, take me home! Ashlie: Err, OK. Maybe well get the bus. ..... Stephen: Put the lid on. Abracadabra, ta-da! Ash, I think this trick might be broken. Nothings happening. Ashlie: Are you sure youre reading the instructions properly? Stephen: Maybe my wand's broken. Ashlie: OK. Well, you cant spend all afternoon on this. We have work to do. We have a party tonight. Stephen: OK, just give me ten more minutes. I need to make this work. Ashlie: OK. Whats this? Oh, well, that was easy. Stephen: Yeah, dead easy. Ashlie: OK. Ten more minutes. Im going to start on the food. .....

Ashlie: Stephen, I said ten minutes. You need to come and help now. Stephen: What? Ashlie: Oh, Stephen!

It's really funny video. We have no Halloween day in our country. I could learn about culture and history of Holloween day by seeing this video. thanks. By the way, I have a little curiosity about 'Hallowe'en' . why the apostrophe is there(between 'we' and 'en')? It's very small small curiosity..

Hello silverwing, The word 'Hallowe'en' is a conflation of a longer name: 'All Hallows Even' ('even' is an old spelling for 'evening' and 'hallows' means 'holy' or 'saints'). The apostrophe is there in place of the missing letter 'v'. Thank you for the interesting question! Best wishes, Peter The LearnEnglish Team

Hello Veronika, I'm afraid the films on the site cannot be downloaded for technical and legal reasons. You can download the transcript and you can watch the film as many times as you wish online, however. Best wishes, Peter The LearnEnglish Team

I think this video is very difficult for me to clearly understand , I just guess the meaning of video because Ashlie spoke so fast. How can I do to improve my listening skill?

Hello, Jeremy gave some advice to another learner with the same problem a bit further down the page. Did you see it? If you can't understand these videos at all, then you probably should start with something easier - our Elementary Podcasts
