Historic Cattle Yards

Long term residents, photographers, artists and tourists have expressed great disappointment in the visual destruction of the old cattle yards past the airport caused by the dumping of road construction materials. The cattle yards are over 100 years old and were still in operation in the 1970s. The Shire is looking into the issue for a suitable resolution. Further details about the history of these yards will be presented in coming issues of Newman News.

Shire Honours on Australia Day continued ...

Australia Day Ambassador and Para Olympian Priya Cooper OAM was the keynote speaker, at the celebration in Newman to mark Australia Day 2014, and shared her inspirational story as well as spending time meeting the locals. The Australia Day festivities in Newman also included fun activities and games for all at the Newman Aquatic Centre, including BBQ and bouncy castles and concluded with fireworks at Boomerang Oval. The Premier's Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards are an ideal way to give due credit where it really is justified, said Chief Executive Officer Allen Cooper. A positive contribution at the grassroots level is what makes Australia so special and it is important that residents and organisations who give so much are publicly honoured, he added.

Jeff Doggett - East Pilbara Australia Day Citizen of the Year

Jeff has lived in Newman for nearly five years and was travelling with his wife Janelle around Australia, landing himself a job in Newman during his travels. Jeff is currently the President for St Johns Ambulance Centre in Newman and has been an active volunteer. Committed 24/7 Jeff has attended most of the serious (fatal) incidents and many others. He holds the position of Volunteer Ambulance Trainer Officer. His dedication and passion to his role has meant that his personal phone receives all emergency calls from the Call Centre in Perth and if needed attends all emergencies if the call out roster has unfilled places. Jeffs mechanical skills from the World Rally Circuit ensure Ambulances remain on the road, except when on a rescue or chasing riders at the Newman Cup Horse Races. Jeff also volunteers at the Newman Speedway. For a couple of years he was the only Race Steward in town.

He has also volunteered his time in assisting Shire events such as the Newman Triathlon, Newman Fun Run and the Rottnest Swim Challenge.

In their short time frame of establishment, the Phoenix Hip Hop group has enabled an alternative recreational activity for the youths in Newman. Phoenix was based around a discussion with Lindsey Fuhmanda about creating a performing arts group learning hip hop. With the support from the Newman Youth Centre, a group was quickly established of passionate people wanting to learn the art of hip hop dancing. The group also learns various genres of dance and is mentored on counting beats in songs, basic history of dance and music, and learning how to respect and build relationships on the dance floor. All participants involved have said that the establishment of the group is great for building confidence, self-esteem and teaches individuals how to be part of a team.

Do You Qualify for an Extraordinary Drivers License?

An extraordinary drivers licence (EDL) is a licence granted at the discretion of the Court. It authorises the holder to drive a vehicle in certain circumstances, even though they have been disqualified from driving by a Court. Circumstances considered by the Court include, if you are: 1. Unable to access urgent medical treatment; or 2. Unable to travel to and from work; or 3. Unable obtain your principal means of income.

You cannot apply for an EDL if you: 1. Have lost your license as a result of the accumulation of demerit point; or 2. Are serving a period of immediate disqualification; or 3. Are serving a fine suspension imposed by the Fines Enforcement Registry. You should seek legal advice if you think you may qualify to apply for an EDL.

Before looking to buy a pet, consider adopting from Saving Animals From Euthanasia (SAFE), which actively works to rescue, rehome and care for domestic pets that are mostly in oversupply. This not for profit organisation was founded by Sue Hedley in Karratha in February 2003. Its beginnings were to address the lack of any animal rescue services for domestic pets in the NW. SAFE Newmans inception was in 2011 and thanks to the commitment of its coordinators, general volunteers and foster carers; it has become a successful rescue organisation. They have rehomed over 300 cats and kittens, close to 200 puppies and dogs, along with rabbits, a goat and a pig within the last three years. Seventy of these dogs and puppies are being rehomed from Jigalong Community with the support of Zoe Blake, a local Police Officer, who rescues them and brings them into SAFE for care. Others are relinquished to SAFE for rehoming. SAFE receives calls regarding kittens trapped in ceilings/roofs, under houses, drain pipes and found in sheds that are rescued by wonderfully committed

volunteers who are always willing to assist in the rescue. They have raised and rehomed animals with disabilities, and ones that are injured or have health issues and given every animal a second chance at life. SAFE ensure all of their animals are desexed, microchipped and have had all of their vet work up to date and of course ensure that they, go to loving homes. They work with owners to encourage their pets receive such care and limit overbreeding of domestic animals. To assist SAFE with their work, a call is put out for short term and long term foster carers and permanent homes for their lovely animals along with people who can assist with airport runs, placement and monitoring of pets in care, photography, and myriad other avenues of volunteerism. Additionally, this care SAFE provides including rescue, feeding, and medical and vet care come at a hefty cost and they need your assistance to support their ongoing efforts. Pet food, pet wormers, kitty litter and the like (donation box at the front of Woolworths) are most welcome while your sponsorship and

Paws up for Puppy School

Puppies have a very short window for social development. In fact the first three months of your puppys life is crucial for their social development, determining who they will become as adult dogs. A well socialised puppy should be able to interact appropriately with adults, children, vets, dogs and other animals, as well as be conditioned to different situations in the environment like traffic, crowds, travelling in the cars and strange noises such as thunderstorms. It is important to expose your puppy to these situations at this young age as they will happily accept new things and accustom quickly. Lack of socialisation

during this crucial time period can increase the risk of behavioural problems later on in life such as fear, avoidance and or aggression. One challenge that we face is that puppies have not completed their vaccine course until 14-16 weeks of age. Furthermore, owners must then wait an additional 10-14 days following their puppys final vaccination before going out on walks and out to the park. Fortunately the Newman Veterinary Hospital has just introduced Puppy School. This four week course, fun for owners and pets alike, offers a safe and effective

means of teaching your puppy about appropriate social interaction with other dogs and people. Over the four week programme, various educational topics will be covered including basic healthcare, husbandry and behaviour. There will be an introduction to obedience and of course the puppies will have ample opportunity to mix and mingle with their new two and four legged friends. Beware the Ides of March Flies

We are well aware of the potential dangers of mosquito borne viruses in Newman, the WA Department of Health is now warning of the biting march fly. While they do not carry diseases to humans in Australia, their bite is painful and in some people can cause a dangerous allergic reaction including anaphylactic shock. They can also cause dangerous blood loss in livestock and domestic pets. Female march flies require ingestion of blood to reproduce. The males tend to feed on nectar. The bite, caused by blade like mouth parts, becomes irritated by the large amounts of saliva the march fly injects under the skin to stop the blood clotting while they take their fill. March fly larvae can live in soil for many months until triggered by the higher rain levels at this time of year and soil temperature. But we are warned that biting march fly numbers are at unusually high levels.

Department of Health Entomologist Dr Peter Neville, says it is not the first time that march fly numbers have spiked. "We had a similar incident back in 2008-09 where march flies were quite a large issue throughout parts of the Pilbara," he says. "We've actually heard of a similar situation in the Goldfields as well, so it does appear that this is a much larger issue than just within the Pilbara." Entomologists have singled out one type of march fly as being the most pesky. "There are approximately two hundred different species of march flies in Australia, however we know of one particular march fly, Mesomyia tryphera, whose bites appear to be causing the majority of the allergic reactions that we're seeing in humans," Dr Neville tells the ABC North West. They are medium to large flies, are rather noisy, and can be agile movers.

As with mosquitoes, it is recommended that people can reduce their change of being bitten by using insect repellent and wearing light, loose-fitting clothes. Dark colours, particularly dark-blue, are known to attract march flies. The Newman Visitors Centre has introduced a new line of insect repellents you may want to investigate. If bitten, application of an ice pack or a mild antihistamine may relieve discomfort. Secondary infections may arise if the site is scratched. Patients with a severe allergic reaction should seek urgent medical advice.
