CorTrol OS5607

A discussion in question and answer format

1. What is CorTrol OS5607?

CorTrol OS5607 is a carbohydrazide-based oxygen scavenger used to reduce corrosion and protect the feedwater circuit in power plants. It is most appropriate where steam cation conductivity is a concern. This product improves feedwater quality by reducing the level of oxygen in the preboiler system and by minimizing the level of metal oxides in the feedwater circuit. Using CorTrol OS5607 as part of a well-planned corrosion control program extends equipment life and helps improve system reliability.

8. Is CorTrol OS5607 effective in treating condensate?

Yes, because carbohydrazide is not volatile, CorTrol OS5607 is effective in treating condensate only when it is fed to a steam header.

9. Can feedwater containing CorTrol OS5607 be used to attemperate (desuperheat) steam?

Yes, CorTrol OS5607 contains no inorganic solids; therefore, it is acceptable to feed to water that will be used to attemperate steam.

2. What is carbohydrazide?
Carbohydrazide (CHZ) is a chemical reducing agent that acts as an oxygen scavenger and metal passivator.

10. What effect will CorTrol OS5607 have on steam cation conductivity?
At typical feedrates, there will be only a small increase in steam cation conductivity over baseline values. This change will be caused by the small amount of carbon dioxide that the product contributes. In high-purity, high-pressure systems where "Degassed" Cation Conductivity is measured, feeding CorTrol OS5607 will cause no change from the baseline values.

3. What is the maximum steam pressure for CorTrol OS5607 applications?

There is no pressure limit on the use of CorTrol OS5607.

4. Is demineralized water used to make CorTrol OS5607?

Yes, CorTrol OS5607 is made with demineralized water.

11. What is the effect of CorTrol OS5607 on steam purity?

At normal feedrates, CorTrol OS5607 has no effect on steam purity.

5. What is the recommended feedrate for CorTrol OS5607?

The theoretical feedrate is 21.5 ppm (mg/L) of CorTrol OS5607 per ppm (mg/L) of oxygen.

12. Can CorTrol OS5607 be used to store equipment such as the superheater and reheater?
CorTrol OS5607 can effectively and safely be used to lay up boilers, feedwater heaters, deaerators, superheaters (both drainable and nondrainable), reheaters and economizers. Neutralizing amine is added to achieve the desired pH (at least 10 in stored equipment). The table on the following page provides feedrate guidelines.

6. Where should I feed CorTrol OS5607?

Feed CorTrol OS5607 as you would any oxygen scavenger. In utility systems, this material is usually fed to the same points as are typical for hydrazine. Feeding to the hot well pump discharge and to the hot well is quite common.

7. Is CorTrol OS5607 volatile?

No, the active oxygen scavenger in CorTrol OS5607 is not volatile, but the thermal decomposition products are. 1

13. Can CorTrol OS5607 be mixed with amines or internal treatment products?
CorTrol OS5607 should be fed neat wherever possible. It should not be mixed with other treatment chemicals.

Table 1: Recommended Layup Dosages

Dosage Chemical CorTrol OS5607 lb/1,000 gal of water 25 to 50 plus Steamate NA0240 or other amine 2 to 3 0.2 to 0.4 pH = 10 kg/1,000 L of water 3 to 6 Control = 3,000 ppm (mg/L) as CorTrol OS5607

14. What materials of construction are compatible with CorTrol OS5607?

Compatible Stainless Steel Polypropylene Polysulfone Teflon Polyethylene, HDCL Viton Not Compatible Mild Steel Brass & Bronze Aluminum Bronze Nickel Neoprene PVC Tygon

18. Is carbohydrazide compatible with the CHEMetrics test for oxygen?

Yes, this technology is compatible with the CHEMetrics test for oxygen. Oxygen monitoring using the CHEMetrics test for dissolved oxygen is a recommended monitoring method.

19. What are the oxygen scavenging reactions for CorTrol OS5607?
The reactions involved are: At temperatures below about 275F (135C), the oxygen scavenger reacts directly with oxygen as follows: (N2H3)2CO + 2 O2 2 N2 + 3 H2O + CO2 At temperatures above 275F (135C), the active ingredient first hydrolyzes to hydrazine and then reacts with the oxygen as follows: (N2H3 )2CO + H2O 2 N2H4 + CO2 2N2H4 + 2 O2 3 H2O + 2 N2

15. What are the proper storage temperatures for CorTrol OS5607?
CorTrol OS5607 should be kept between 40F (7C) and 100F (38C). If stored below 40F (7C), crystallization can occur. Resolubilizing the precipitate is difficult and some loss of activity may result. Storing above 100F (38C) speeds decomposition to hydrazine.

16. Does CorTrol OS5607 have a flash point.

No.

20. What are the decomposition products of CorTrol OS5607?

The oxygen scavenger (CHZ) hydrolyzes to hydrazine and carbon dioxide at temperatures above 275F (135C) as follows: (N2H3)2CO + H2O 2 N2H4 + CO2 At temperatures above 300F (>150C) the oxygen scavenger decomposes to form ammonia, nitrogen and carbon dioxide as follows: (N2H3)2CO + H2O 2NH3 + N2 + H2CO3

17. What tests do I use to control a CorTrol OS5607 program?

The Iron Reduction Method for Oxygen Scavengers is recommended for testing CorTrol OS5607 residual in feedwater at temperatures below 400F (200C). For testing CorTrol OS5607 residual in boiler temperatures above 400F (200C), we recommend using the hydrazine test because most of the carbohydrazide will have hydrolyzed to hydrazine. 2

21. How much ammonia and carbon dioxide does CorTrol OS5607 liberate to the steam?
The amount of ammonia and carbon dioxide released by CorTrol OS5607 is to some extent a system characteristic. The maximum amount of ammonia and carbon dioxide liberated is approximately 15 ppb (g/L) NH3 and 14 ppb (g/L) CO2 per ppm (mg/L) of product feed, and occurs when the scavenger is completely decomposed.

23. Can CorTrol OS5607 be used in systems where the steam is regulated by the FDA?
No. CorTrol OS5607 must not be used in systems where the steam is FDA regulated or where it is used for humidification as in a central heating system. Utilities and cogeneneration facilities that export steam to food process applications or for humidification must use materials that are FDA approved such as CorTrol OS9990 and CorTrol OS1292.

22. Does carbohydrazide interfere with the performance of other boiler chemicals?
Carbohydrazide does not interfere with the performance of dispersants, amines or other boiler water treatment products. Also, the performance of CorTrol OS5607 is not affected by the presence of these components in the boiler feedwater. However, CorTrol OS5607 should never be mixed with dispersants or other chemicals prior to feeding.
