Lenz, Challis Head To Des Moines

MARION Tipton junior Eric Lenz and junior Jordan Challis punched their tickets to the 2014 State Wrestling Tournament this week after their efforts at the district meet in Marion last Saturday. The Tigers took four wrestlers to the district meet. At the meet were Eric Lenz (106), Mitch Chapman (170), Jordan Challis (182) and Cameron Ihrig (195). Tipton coach Matt Nerem said that it was an exciting day for the Tigers. I dont think that they (Eric and Jordan) will be awestruck going down there. I hope that they are not just happy to be there. They can compete down there at state and they have to keep believing that they cant be stopped, he said. Nerem said that the day didnt start how he had thought it would with Lenz losing by a major decision. When Eric lost his first match, I didnt know what the day was going to be like at that point. It didnt set the tone we had wanted. We caught a break and Eric wrestled better each match. Jordan wrestled the best he has all year. Cameron was sick most of the week and he had a phenominal sectional meet and Mitch knew he had to win his first match to have a shot, because Ryan was not going to lose, he said. Nerem also said that the week leading up to the district meet was not how he had pictured it. We had a flat week, but, by the end of the week two of the guys were looking good, but, Eric and Cameron were fighting sickness last week and it wasnt the week we thought we were going to have, he said. Lenz came into the district meet ranked 5th at 106 in 2A. Lenz came into the district meet under the weather from being sick and right out of the gate found himself in an overtime match in the semifinals. There, the score was 2-2 after three periods with Derek Holschlag of Union. Holschlag scored two escapes while Lenz had a takedown. In overtime, Holschlag started first and scored five points to take a 7-2 lead. On Lenzs turn, Holschlag got three more points to score a 10-2 major decision. Lenz found a familiar opponent in the 3rd place match. There, he took on Jake Durgin of Mt. Vernon, a wrestler he beat at sectionals. In that match, Lenz took a 4-2 lead to the second period. Lenz took a 6-3 lead after a takedown with 51 seconds, but Durgin rallied to score two points on a takedown of his own to put the score at 6-5 after two periods. In the final period, Lenz put the match away, scoring two points helping lead to an 8-6 win. During his match, Holschlag beat 6th ranked Nick Meling of East Marshall setting up a wrestleback match for Lenz. In the match, Lenz got a takedown right away, but would trail 3-2 after one period. Lenz scored a takedown with 1:44 left in the second to take a 4-3 lead. Meling scored an escape point to tie the score at 4 before Lenz took the lead for good with 19 seconds left in the second when he scored another takedown for a 6-4 lead after two periods. In the final period, each wrestler scored two points putting the score at 8-6 in favor of Lenz. The victory sent Lenz to the state tournament. Its awesome accomplishing one of your goals. One of the reasons too was I wanted to get to state for my dad, said Lenz. There is a ton of emotion in this sport and I love every second of it. It was awesome to have all the support of my family, to reach that goal and have all the hard work pay off is a great feeling, he said. Lenz was very greatful for the chance to get to state after being in stacked sectional weight classes the past two seasons. This year, he made state in class 2A. Its just tremendous. After freshman and sophomore season being stuck in a loaded sectional you just crave it more and more and now Ive done it, he said. Challis came into the district meet ranked 10th at 182 in 2A. Challis wasted little time in his semifinal match with Trevor Rommann of CPU. There, Challis Marion District WR To Page 12.

Knights Jump On Tigers Early In Win

TIPTON The North Cedar boys basketball team completed a sweep over rival Tipton last Tuesday with a 57-34 win in Tipton. The Knights narrowly escaped the Tigers at home back in January, but this time left no doubt. The win was the second RVC victory in as many nights for North Cedar. North Cedar used a 16-8 run in the first quarter and held a 29-13 lead by halftime. A comeback attempt by the Tigers was not enough in the third quarter despite playing almost evenly with the Knights in the quarter. The Tigers however, found themselves down 3921 after three quarters. North Cedar finished off the win with an 18-13 run in the fourth quarter. Jayden Johnson had a team high 14 points and 7 rebounds for North Cedar. Josh Kintzel scored 12 points, 6 steals and 5 steals.
