SE 130A Winter 2014 STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS I

Homework 3 DUE Thursday February 6, 2014, 5 PM (Submit during class or office hours) Problem 1 a) Draw the influence line for reactions MA,RA and RC of the beam shown below considering a 1 kip unit load. For your approach, first tabulate values by determining desired reaction for a unit load at A, B, C and D. Noting that influence lines for determinate structures are linear; connect the dots to sketch out your influence lines. b) Draw the influence line for the internal moment at C. Identify the location of a concentrated load on the beam that would cause the largest positive and negative moment at C.

Problem 2 a-b) Using the Muller-Breslau Principle, draw the influence lines for the reactions and internal forces noted below each structure. Consider a unit load of 1 kip and calculate critical values.

c) Consider the beam shown in Figure 2a with design loads of 500 lb/ft dead load and 800 lb/ft live load. Determine the maximum positive and maximum negative moment that can be developed at C due to the combined loads. The live load can be placed anywhere along the beam. Problem 3 The beam below is subjected to a uniform dead load of 200 lb/ft due to the self-weight of the beam, a uniform live load of 150 lb/ft, and a concentrated live load of 800 lb. The live loads can be placed anywhere on the beam. Determine (a) the maximum negative moment at C from only the live loads (b) the maximum positive and maximum negative shear at B considering both dead and live loads. The beam is fixed at C, hinge ad D and roller support at A.

Problem 4 a) Derive the equations for slope and deflection for the beam below with flexural rigidity EI. Compute the maximum deflection. Hint: Slope = 0 at maximum deflection. Also determine the rotations at A and B. b) Determine the rotations at A and B by considering superposition of the loads and tabulated values.

Problem 5 Determine the vertical deflection at C and rotation at B for the beam shown below. Use E=200 GPa and I=70x106 mm4. The connection at A is pinned and B can be treated as a roller.

Problem 6 Determine the vertical deflection at A and rotation at B for the frame shown below. Use E=200 GPa and I=90x106 mm4

Problem 7 What value of force P is required at C if the vertical deflection at C is to be zero? The beam has flexural rigidity EI.

Problem 8 The beam ABC with flexural rigidity EI = 75 kN-m2 is loaded by a force P = 800 N at C and tied down by a cable with axial rigidity EA = 900 kN at end A. For the structure shown: a) Determine the strain energy U stored in the beam and wire due to the load P. Note that the formulation of strain energy for a cable in tension is similar to a truss. b) Based on the internal strain energy and conservation of energy, find the vertical deflection at C under the applied load. Note the strain energy of the beam and cable are simply added to obtain the total strain energy in the structure.

The objective of problem 8 is to introduce the concept of computing deflections by real work and energy. You will need to determine the external work and internal work (strain energy) for each element. Note that this procedure has limitations as it can only be applied to structures with a single load.
