The federal government ofcially announced the 2014 budget on Feb. 11. Some of the highlights from the budget include no major tax cuts, a $2.9 billion decit for 2014 and a $6.4 billion surplus predicted for 2015/2016. think the highlight was that we continued our focus on job creation, on growing the economy and committed to moving to balanced in 2015, said MP and Minister of State for Finance Kevin Sorenson. Sorenson said the government is keeping taxes low and also wants to see an investment in people and skill development. There have been initiatives brought forward with job creation for young students and young apprentices coming out of universities and colleges. Apprentices have never been able to qualify for an interest-free loan on the student loan program, said Sorenson. Many will drop out after a year or two because they cant afford to go to school or they have found a job. This now gives them access to an interest-free loan, which will hopefully help make the idea of going to school an easier one. Another good thing, and one that will also directly impact Strathmore and Wheatland County, is the $305 million being invested over ve years to expand rural high-speed Internet. I think this is good for the rural and I know that most of my constituents that I have talked to are pretty excited about it, said Sorenson. The project will see areas like Standard, Hussar and Gleichen given access to fast Internet and allow them to have the same operating capabilities as people in larger urban centres. Sorenson and Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty are both looking ahead to 2015, and are optimistic about what it will hold. I think the outlook is optimism, a lot more opportunities for young people coming out of schools, I think were going to see growth in our economy, said Sorenson. We have cut taxes 160 times since we have come into power in 2006, the average family of four has over $3,400 a year more in their pockets than before these tax cuts. Were continuing on that plan. We will be balanced budget and we will have a very healthy surplus. Continued on Page 5

Pond hockey gets equipment boost

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The local A&W restaurant is always supportive of local groups and organizations, so it was no surprise to hear they once again did their thing, this time helping out the Gleichen Pond Hockey program. Will Whatley, manager of the Strathmore A&W, said a regular customer of his came into the restaurant and mentioned that Gleichen was preparing for their annual pond hockey tournament, and they were looking for new equipment. At rst the plan was to be a dropoff point for equipment, but that didnt quite work out, so Whatley and his staff took a different route. We decided to do a silent auction and we raised just over $1,000. We turned that into helmets which this year was one of the major needs, and then we gure next year we can do skates and hockey sticks, said Whatley. We dont have anything scheduled in winter time really January/February is our slow season effectively for fundraising so this lled a niche for us as well and is something thats very important in the community. Cara Sheppard, president of Gleichen and District Minor Hockey and creator of the pond hockey program, was wowed when she heard the news. I was completely taken back, I couldnt believe it, it was quite an amazing thing for somebody in the community to just go ahead and do for us and we really appreciated it, said Sheppard. On Feb. 6, a few days before the annual Hockey Day in GA event, Whatley presented Sheppard with 28 new helmets and the leftover cash. Sheppard bought new gloves and elbow pads to add to some of the equipment in the Sea-Can container. Weve actually completely outtted two kids this year for our program and well see what happens for our tournament, somebody always forgets some piece of equipment that day so it will denitely come in handy for sure, said Sheppard.

On Monday February 10, 2014 Strathmore RCMP were dispatched to a theft over $5000.00 which had occurred sometime during the previous night on Range Road 285 in the Rockyview area. Individual(s) had stolen a 5 kilowatt generator, a utility cat trailer, and 16 vacuum lift pads, the value of the items are approximately $35,000.00. Police are requesting anyone who has information regarding this crime to contact the Strathmore RCMP or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).

offended with it, said Erison. I think people wanted to rally against it. Its either you loved it or you hated it, so I wasnt really too surprised when I saw it made the list. Erison said The Kite Runner, a New York Times bestseller for over two years, has continuously been challenged because of homosexuality, offensive language, religious view points, and sexually explicit themes and it was a fantastic book. Just because a book makes these lists doesnt mean its removed from a shelf, it means that it was actively challenged, said Erison. There is a policy in place at the library that people are welcome to challenge a book that they have on their shelves. There is a form to ll out. One of the questions is did you read it? sometimes people want to censor a book without reading it Those challenges, if they received one, would be examined by the director and then brought to the board for a decision. Many of the books that are challenged in schools or librarys are rarely pulled off the shelves, but each challenge is taken very seriously said Erison. The 2013 list of challenged books will be released later this year.

Unplugging for Family Day

Hundreds of Strathmore residents took part in the Family Day unplugged events. The day started with a kids carnival put on by the Youth Club of Strathmore and a pancake breakfast by the Cheadle Lions at the Civic Centre. From there people made their way to Kinsmen Park for the great skate and ice fishing. There was also live music, and hot soup and hot chocolate to help keep people warm. Following the festivities at the park there was a free family swim at the Aquatic Centre thanks to the 5 for Life Coalition.

Meditation goes back thousands of years to Buddhist India. It is practiced today in Canada and one doctor studied the effect meditation on high blood pressure. He taught a group of people to include yoga and meditation in their daily routine. Although his results didnt show any lowering of blood pressure, the participants noted that it helped them relax and live with less stress. Thats a good outcome. In moving a baby from the bottle or breast to a cup, sippy cups are often used and work well. But, they shouldnt be overused. Allowing the child to drink all day from the cup filled with sugary drinks allows sugar to stay in the mouth longer increasing the risk of dental decay. Used too often can possibly alter the position of the teeth. By the time the child is 2-3 years old, the sippy cup should be gone. There is a link between the amount of alcohol a person drinks daily and the risk of getting certain types of cancers. The more you drink (wine, beer or spirits), the greater your risk of liver, mouth, colon and breast cancer. The risk of other cancers also rises. Bad breath is something that happens to others. But if it does happens to you, check your oral hygiene. Brush your teeth and tongue after eating. Floss well at least once daily. Dry mouth can contribute to bad breath so drink plenty of water. And if you are a smoker, quit. For advice on treating dry mouth, special dental aids or mouthwashes, talk to our pharmacy staff. Wed be glad to help.

Understanding Islam
Understanding Islam was an exhibit put on at the Strathmore Municipal Library Feb. 6 - 8 by members of the Baitun Nur Mosque. The idea was to invite the community to come out and learn more about the culture and know that not all Muslims are the same as what is often depicted in the news. Umair Khan (l), a missionary from the Baitun Nur Mosque in Calgary, and exhibit host Salman Khalid answer questions about Islam asked by audience members during the Understanding Islam Exhibit on Feb. 8.

On Jan. 29 a puppeteer from FIGURA theatre, an Icelandic company, put on a presentation of Peter and the Wolf for Westmount School. The one person show was a hit with everyone at the school.

Youth Club programs aimed to help kids out of their shell

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Youth Club of Strathmore always has new programs being offered to youth in the community. One of the newest ones, beginning on March 1 is Curtain Call. Curtain call will run on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., and is focused on kids ages 10 to 14. It is just designed to introduce kids to the world of theatre. They will be doing some different techniques and learning some skills and then at the end of their six weeks they will put on a small little production, said Director for the Youth Club Shannon Zieman. The kids will learn basic acting techniques, and more about theatre work. Another new program coming to the Youth Club on March 6 is Skills for Life. The hope is to eventually run the program for different age groups, but for now the focus will be on students in Grades 4 to 6. It is kind of a conglomeration of a bunch of different things but its to help them learn skills to deal with stress, self-esteem, anxiety, anger management and how to deal with their feelings. So its helping them develop ways to deal with that in a positive way, said Zieman. The program will be co-facilitated with someone from Alberta Mental Health. It is to help the kids start working on thinking positively and how to work through issues they might be dealing with. Its like a self-esteem group but it touches a little bit more on other issues impacting kids nowadays as well, said Zieman. Skills for Life will run once a week on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Registration for both programs opened at REVS on Feb. 12. Cheadle 4-H Club on a roll

KYLEE HEBBEs Cheadle 4-H Club Reporter Things are getting busy for the Cheadle 4-H Club. They held their monthly meeting on Feb. 11 at the Cheadle Hall. The club was presented a cheque for $100 from the Alberta Lamb Growers to assist the sheep members with expenses. The club raised a charity steer last year that they sold at our local Heritage Days Stampede, raising $25,250 for the Strathmore Food Bank. The club is planning on this event again, only this time they will be giving the proceeds to the Alberta Childrens Hospital. This will be a great opportunity for some businesses to help Cheadle 4-H Club give to children in need. The Wheatland District Funspiel will be held on Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. at the Strathmore Curling Club. Kids interested signed up for a day of curling and pizza. Members will be busy helping out at the Wild Game Supper at the Civic Centre in Strathmore on March 1. Public speaking and presentations for the club level will be held on March 9 at 1 p.m. at the Cheadle Hall. From there the winners will advance to district competition the following Saturday in Strathmore. Good luck to all the members! The members are to send in ideas for the label that will go on the BBQ sauce they give to their steer and lamb buyers. These will be voted on at the next meeting. A tentative date for March 23 was set for the sheep members to weigh in their projects. The Heuver family graciously offered their place to hold this event. The lambs will be weighed in, tagged and given their vaccinations. Senior members, and District Key Members, Michael Brewin and Kylee Hebbes gave a talk to the rest of the members on how to give a speech and presentation. This was especially helpful for those kids that will be speaking or presenting for the rst time. The next meeting will be held on March 11 at 7 p.m. at the Cheadle Hall.

Economic Action Plan 2014

KEVIN SORENsON, M.P., CROWFOOT Parliamentary Report While other countries continue to struggle with debt that is spiralling out of control, Canada remains in the most enviable scal position among all G-7 countries. Economic Action Plan 2014 keeps our Conservative government on track. It will return Canada to balanced budgets in 201516. Meanwhile, the NDP and Liberals keep demanding reckless spending and want to impose higher taxes. We will not do this. Budget 2014 builds on these efforts to reduce wasteful and ineffective government spending by making public sector wages and benets more affordable for taxpayers by ensuring compensation is fair and in-line with other public and private sector employers. We are also improving the fairness of the tax system, by closing tax loopholes and strengthening tax enforcement. In addition, our Conservative government continues to control the size and cost of government, by freezing departmental budgets to ensure efciency in operations and administration. With these and other measures, Economic Action Plan 2014 will bring the projected decit down to $2.9 billion by 201415 and forecasts a surplus in 201516. While we are controlling departmental spending, federal support to Canadians, like seniors benets and major transfers to provinces for health care, education and other services Canadians rely on will also keep growing to record levels. For Alberta, the transfers will total $5.2 billion in 2014-15 a whopping 134 per cent increase from under the previous Liberal government. Economic Action Plan 2014 enhances the New Horizons for Seniors Program by increasing funding with an additional $5 million per year. It launches the Canadian Employers for Caregivers Action Plan, to work with employers so that caregivers can maximize their participation in the workforce while being able to provide care to their loved ones. It also expands the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers, by investing to help unemployed older workers put their talents and experience back to work. Family farms are the backbone of our country, and our riding in particular. Our farmers feed Canadians and the world, while providing jobs and opportunities. We are expanding tax deferral for livestock, supporting innovation and competitiveness, and introducing a new Pilot Price Insurance Program, to provide cattle and hog producers in Western Canada with insurance against unexpected price declines within a production cycle. Economic Action Plan 2014 introduces new measures to support Canadas veterans, including expanding the Funeral and Burial Program to ensure that modern day veterans of modest means can have a dignied funeral and burial. We are also increasing access to Veterans Services, by enabling veterans and their families to engage the Department of Veterans Affairs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and giving former Canadian Armed Forces personnel priority in federal public service employment opportunities. Premier Redford travels in style on your dime

JASON HALE, MLA Strathmore Brooks Imagine going to your local travel agent to scan for the best ight prices to an exotic location. You want to take your spouse on a much needed and well deserved vacation to get some sun, see new sights and enjoy another climate for a while. But what if your agents best price was $45,000? What would you do? Youd probably walk away. What if you could bill it to someone else would you take it then? It might tempt you, but its unlikely. I think decent and common sense Albertans would know that charging such an outrageous and unjustiable bill to someone else, even if you could, is just wrong when more reasonable options are so easily available. So it bewilders taxpayers to learn that PC Premier Alison Redford recently did exactly the opposite of what every other Albertan would have. Instead of demanding a better deal, she charged taxpayers $45,000 so she could attend the funeral of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Thats $15,000 to y to Ottawa on a government plane, where she hitched a free ride with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, and then $10,000 for a rst-class exible ight back to Canada. Add in the $20,000 round-trip airfare for her personal assistant, and you get a $45,000-bill to taxpayers. By comparison, Nova Scotia Premier Stephen McNeil attended the same funeral, but paid only $946.44. That means Premier Redford paid more than 47 times her Atlantic counterpart to achieve the same results. We understand why the Premier wanted to attend Mandelas funeral, by why is Premier Redfords travel so expensive? Like most of you, Im scratching my head as to how these kinds of outrageous bills are even considered without a thought given to taxpayers. This government has travelled more than any other in the history of Alberta, and the price tag has never been higher. The Environment Minister recently took an entourage to Europe, billing Albertans $40,000 for the privilege of having represented the province abroad. Not too long ago, the Premier spent $120,000 to take an entourage to India. The itinerary involved some mid-level meetings, trade shows, a couple of low-level Memorandums of Understanding, and lots of sight-seeing. Now, government travel is legitimate and can even be a good investment. This government, however, cant seem to do anything economically. Everything is rst class all the way. And youre picking up the tab. The PC government just doesnt seem to respect Albertans hard earned tax dollars. Albertans can trust the Wildrose Ofcial Opposition to hold this government to account for these kinds of abuse of tax dollars. PAT FULE Fule for Thought Panic is dened as a sudden overwhelming fear, with or without cause, that produces irrational behavior, and can spread to others (dictionary.com). Besides trying to watch The Walking Dead without screaming, there are things that can throw a person into panic mode. Heck, Im still dealing with a hedgehog that panics when he hears sudden noises and hes caught outside his house. I swear his only response to a threat is to poop! Its getting very old, and we try not to scare him, but he still balls up with his spikes out, and makes snorting, pig-like grunts. And yes, he still poops the whole time he runs on his exercise wheel what a dumb pet. Medical procedures can throw a person into sudden fear. I was talking to a former student, Ashley, and shes in the LPN Program at Mount Royal. They are currently in mid-terms, and I know that can be a scary time. Not only does Ashley have tests to study for, she has to do her practical labs. I asked what kind of lab things she has, and she replied, were working on catheters this week. Im sure I went white with fear, and I bet there are a lot of men out there who are also cringing at that word. We know where that gets inserted, and no man wants that! I asked Ashley how her nursing student pals actually practice that technique. She said they have dummies for that, but eventually they also have to work on real people! Who would volunteer for that Id have to be paid a lot of money to get practiced on! You better not be grabbing homeless guys off the street for your evil experiments, Frankenstein! You probably tell them theyre getting a nice meal and stuff, right up til theyre strapped down! Hopefully, these guys havent been out in the cold too long! It doesnt always have to be medical procedures that cause panic in people; even the simplest of day-to-day things can cause panic. Theres nothing quite like that thrill of instant fear when its Garbage Day, youve just hit snooze on the alarm, and you hear the noise of the big truck approaching your house! You go from a peaceful doze to instant fear and sprinting around to the various garbage cans around the house. You ll the one in the garage, and try to get it bagged, tied, and out to the pick-up spot on time! The worst is when you do all that, only to see the truck about three houses down from you. Now I dont know about you, but I refuse to run down after them carrying the bags! My biggest fear is that they wont stop, or worse yet, theyll taunt me a bit. You know, you get closer, they might slow down then speed up! Im not saying garbage guys do that, but I think of these things in terms of me. Its something I would do! In fact, if I was a garbage guy, Id pick the odd day where Id make sure we got out quite a bit earlier, just to see how many neighbours I could launch from their garages into panicked running after us! Of course, I probably wouldnt keep that job very long! Another panic happens at the workplace every now and then. Our school has video cameras and an elaborate alarm system. One morning when Deb and I went up to my classroom so I could pick up some marking, I joked, wouldnt it be funny if the alarm went off? Well, it did! It turns out that when I keyed in the alarm to shut off the system, I actually pressed away instead and it was a really loud system! When this does happen, you have to shut it off, before any authorities get dispatched. So it becomes the panicked run back down to the alarm pad, key it off, and then you have to call the 1-800 Alarm Company to tell them what an idiot you are, and please do not send out police or re trucks! Then you have to explain to your principal about the reason the alarm went off, and you feel deep shame lol. Watching the two man bobsled races has convinced me the back guy has the hardest job, followed by the most fear! First, hes got to push a lot longer than the driver. Then he has to execute a dive into the back, and stay down as low as possible. Can you imagine that for however long that race is, down the mountain track at speeds of 80 mph, all the back guy sees, are his feet and the drivers butt! That would be scary enough, but then you have to totally trust the guy in front! Not me, my head would pop up, just to see if were going to hit a wall or not. Sure, our times may be slower than other teams, but my bladder also wouldnt empty all the way down! Huh, maybe thats why most teams wear dark race suits!

Childrens Fest plans underway

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Plans are well underway for this years Strathmore Childrens Festival at the Civic Centre, April 12. Every year the festival, as of this year, will support one charity if there is any money raised the event is free to attend- and any sponsorship dollars raised beyond whats needed for the festival will be reinvested into the next year. At the door there will be a donation acceptance set up and a rafe of donated items for people to enter. There will also be goodie bags given to the rst 100 families. All of the money raised off of that goes to one charity each year. This year its School Fuel, said Ryan Parkins, who is helping organize this years event. (We picked them) largely because it is a local organization that is under-recognized so we thought we could offer it kind of two fold benets. Number one we can raise funds for it, and we can also raise program awareness. The Parkins have recruited a number of volunteers already but will likely need another ve to 10 people to put their name forward. Throughout the day the volunteers job is to man one of the events, maybe monitor a bouncy house, or an arts table and help kids put crafts together. The time frame depends on if they are needed for a shift or if they are able to spend the whole day helping. If the volunteer is not overly mobile, maybe they will take care of the door, it depends on who offers to volunteer, said Parkins, but he will try and t them in where best suits them. None of the events of the day can be ofcially released at this point but there does promise to be physical and safety aspects to it. There will denitely be your physical activities, like your bouncy houses. Theres denitely going to be some arts and crafts, as well there are going to be 10-minute stage shows this year, said Parkins. The focal point this year is going to hopefully be safety, were going to talk to a number of local and protective and emergency services and hopefully well get them involved in doing a presentation that is kind of fun but also focuses on the different elements of safety for each of them. One of the big things that is different about our expo versus some is everything in ours has to be child related, they cant just be a vendor and have a general purpose product. Rosebud graduate celebrates release of rst album

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER Times Contributor Natalie Inga Gauthier, 2013 graduate of Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA), celebrates the release of her album Look Up, at events in Rosebud and Calgary. The rst release party is Sunday, March 2, at 7 p.m., at the Ironwood Stage and Grill in Calgary. Gauthiers band, Inga and the Birds, will open for The Carlines. Gauthier will play a full set at the second event at Rosebuds Thorny Rose Cafe, Sunday, March 9 at 8 p.m. The dream for Look Up began when Gauthier won a RSA scholarship, allowing her to record three songs at Paul Zacharias recording studio in Rosebud. Gauthier and Zacharias discovered they worked well together, planting the idea to produce a full album for Gauthier. They began recording Look Up in May 2013, optimistic theyd also nish in May. They didnt nish recording til November, and even after that, things didnt go as expected. The albums were printed in Toronto, shipped to Strathmore rather than to Rosebud, and got stuck there in a blizzard. Finally, they arrived in Rosebud. Gauthier now views the long delay as a blessing in disguise, because it didnt just capture one moment. The work extended over so many months that I had a lot of personal journey when I was able to learn and grow, she says. Whats even cooler, she says, is that many of the songs carry that theme. Its really about growth and about the journey and about starting somewhere difcult ... and ending up having a richer experience because of that difculty, she said. Gauthier calls her music uplifting folk music, featuring sweet harmonies, various instruments and a playful narration of a search for hope in all things. She wants it to be like a friend, in the sense that music expresses how we feel when we cant put our feelings into words, and is encouraging, while acknowledging how difcult life can be. I want to give music as a gift, the way music has been a gift for me, she said. The fourth track, Letting Go, is a gift especially for her women friends. Letting go, though we dont know when the light will come. Letting go, though its slow, yes, the light will come, the lyrics say. Book the ticket, take the ight, close your eyes and make a leap. Gauthier wrote it, she says, because a womans heart just wants to love people, to love someone regardless of whether or not that person loves them back. While celebrating Look Ups release, Gauthier is acting with Calgarys Evergreen Theatre and, in March, will participate in a festival of new works with Urban Curves Theatre. Crowfoot 4-H Multi communication results

KAITY STEWART Crowfoot 4-H Multi The club got together for the monthly meeting on Feb. 3. We had the Wheatland District 4-H key members do a record book workshop for us. We talked about the communications event, which took place on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the United Church. Margo had the sign-up sheets for District Curling Funspiel (Feb. 20), the Calgary Regional Curling Bonspiel (Feb. 17) and Jr. Int. Fun Day (March 29). Natasha reported that the dog agility project met at the Russells on Jan. 27 and worked on obedience, jumps and the pause box. Kendal reported that photography project got together at the Russells on Jan. 26, where they learned about taking portraits of each other using different lights front, side and background, ash and no ash. They also learned getting closer or zooming removes distractions and draws eye to subject. Everyone had lots of fun. Riley reported that on Jan. 9, archery had a project record book workshop with Margo. They got the pieces for the leather project, talked about guring out the right size and pattern for the next meeting. On Jan. 23, the members all had their patterns, after cutting out the leather pattern they were glued onto a cutting board to start working on then without the leather stretching. Everyone shot their bows. I am cutting the material for my rag quilt and would like to thank Norma at Cotton Candy for cutting my seven yards of material into 30 smaller panels for me to work with. On Saturday, Feb. 8, at the United Church the clubs communication competition was held. The leaders and members would like to send a big thank you the judges for their time and support. Everyone did an amazing job and the members hope everyone who came to watch enjoyed the day. Emily Hilton was the MC for this years competition. Brians family, including his father, moved from England to Canada in 1906, originally settling in Elkhorn, Man. where they purchased a farm. In England they had owned and operated the company Duke & Son, which originated in 1760 in Penshurst, a village in the Sevenoaks district of Kent. This company manufactured cricket balls and bats, and continued in this business until 1995. The family lived and farmed in Elkhorn for six years, but following grandfathers death in 1912, while on a business trip to England before the start of WW1, they sold the farm and moved to Winnipeg. Brians father and brother served in the Canadian Army in WW1. His father lost a leg in the rst battle at Ypres, Belgium, and his brother lost the use of his left arm. Brian was born in Winnipeg on March 26, 1930 and had three sisters and a brother. All but his younger sister have predeceased him. He attended Luxton Elementary School in Winnipeg, which was built by the same family that built the Luxton Museum in Banff. Then, he attended St Johns Technical High School through Grade 12, before moving to Calgary in 1950. Yvonne (Gowan) great, great-grandparents were Huguenots, and descendants moved to Chicago in 1882, then to Maple Creek and Piapot, Sask. in 1913, where they homesteaded until 1914. Readers might be interested to know that Huguenots were members of the Protestant Reformed Church of France during the 16th and 17th centuries. Following religious persecutions in the early 18th century, most ed to Protestant Nations in Europe, South Africa and English Colonies in North America, which were willing to accept them. Yvonne was born in Maple Creek, Sask. on June 11, 1929, and had three sisters. All three sisters have predeceased her. She attended Higher Piapot Elementary School in Saskatchewan, followed by high school in Red Deer, and then took nursing training at Red Deer Provincial Training School, which is now known as the Michener Centre. In 1947, at the age of 18, she was badly injured in a car accident, and spent the next three years in hospital. She met Brian on a blind date at a Christmas Party in Calgary in 1950, which was set up by one of Brians co-workers. They married on Nov. 24, 1951 and have two sons, and three grandchildren. They have a granddaughter living in Australia and completing her M.D. at Brisbane Medical University. Initially, Brian worked as a diesel mechanic for four years with the road construction company - Mannix Construction. But, they were newly married, and the work took him far and wide from Calgary, to places like Valleyview, Grande Prairie and Whitecourt. So, they purchased a holiday trailer, which would allow Yvonne to go with him. But, roads in those days were not like todays, as they soon found out, it was impossible to tow the trailer, and crossing the rivers by cat

train was also impossible. He resigned from Mannix, returned to Calgary, and went to work for Canadian Pacic Airlines as an aircraft engineer. From 1954 to 1964, during The Commonwealth Pilot Training program he worked in Lethbridge and MacDonald, Man. on RCAF Jet Fighters. They returned to Calgary in 1964, and for the next 14 years lived in the Acadia area. Brian updated all his mechanic licenses, including aircraft maintenance engineer, Alberta Journeymans Automotive, heavy duty diesel, and transport refrigeration. During this time, he coached Little League baseball - a skill he had learnt while working in Lethbridge and MacDonald. He also refereed hockey, was a scout leader, and chairman of Cub and Scout groups. As the treasurer of Acadia Community Centre, Yvonne became involved in the fundraising for the building of the Twin Arenas, now known as Calgary Acadia Recreation Centre. She also assisted in catering for weddings, etc and became the Sunday School superintendent at McDougall United Church. While living in Lethbridge, he and Yvonne took up square dancing. An activity they enjoyed throughout the rest of their lives. The thrill of their lifetime was square dancing in the Opening Ceremonies of The 15th Winter Olympic Games at McMahon Stadium in February 1988 with 958 other square dancers. As a result of learning to square dance, Brian learnt to be a caller, and became a DJ with Disco Dukes, with Yvonne and later his two sons, Barry and Tim, providing music for weddings and parties, etc for the next 40 years. After joining Cominco at the Carseland Plant in 1978, they moved to Strathmore where they joined the Wheatland Whirlers Square Dance Club. At this time the population was around 2,900. In 1988, Cominco was taken over by another company, and he was laid off. From then until retirement in 2010, he worked at different oileld compressor stations in and around Strathmore. Brian served on Strathmore Board of Directors for YDC,- the Youth Development Centre, and Yvonne volunteered at extended care centre in the Strathmore Hospital from 1985 to 1993. They are both members of Strathmore United Church. On Nov. 21, 1995 Brian, George Pinchbeck, and Donelda Snyder opened the rst youth club in Strathmore called The Loft located on the 2nd oor of Hilton Plaza. Brian and The Disco Dukes, provided the music. The club closed three years later, after the provincial government withdrew funding. Theyre very proud of their children and grandchildren, who have been very successful in their chosen careers. When I enquired what changes theyd seen in the last 34 years, both commented that the downtown businesses were the hub of activity for all town and farm people. Things have certainly changed since they moved here 35 years ago, and they both said how much theyve enjoyed living here. Additionally, Brian stated The train no longer comes past our house!

Flycoren authors to host book signing

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Andrew and Amanda Glubrecht, local authors of the fantasy graphic novel Flycoren: Kausim will be holding a book signing at Canadian Tire on Feb. 22 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Theres actually quite a few people who have been asking for a book signing, they want to meet us, so this is just an opportunity for them to come in and get their book signed, said Andrew. The book signing is also a way for the couple to introduce themselves to a larger audience, and kind of prepares them for their upcoming appearance at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, April 24 to 27. The story of Flycoren began while Amanda was in high school. It was a creative outlet, I needed something to escape so I basically threw myself into developing and writing something that I could feel proud of and not acknowledge the outside world, said Amanda. She and Andrew would spend hours after school in the art room working on the comic. The story follows the tale of Belle and Az, both of whom are antimorphic characters. Az is a lemur type of guy and Belle is based off of an orca whale, tail and all, said Andrew. Their lives are completely different, Az living in a calm and peaceful community and Belle coming from a wartorn country. Because Belle is an orca whale, they (her family) were trying to escape this war and a hurricane actually sent her off course, so she ends up washed up on this island and happens to meet Az, said Andrew. Its about their adventures of getting her back home. The couple has published two Flycoren: Kausim graphic comics, one in 2012 and one in 2013. The plan is to continue to print a new book each year in October, continuing the tale for their readers. In the meantime though, the comic is regularly updated online at www.ycoren.com. Amanda is the main writer behind the series and will colour in the characters. Andrew is the background artist and letterer. He also compiles the comics to get them ready for print. It just works really well together, we just happen to have this relationship where we can play off of each others strengths and weaknesses and make it work really well for us, said Andrew. Even after all these years it is still something that we love to work on and every extra ounce of time we have is spent on this project and on our comics. Amanda wasnt so sure she wanted the public to read her work in the beginning, but eventually Andrew was able to convince her that the story was one to be shared. Its kind of intimidating because I am letting someone else read what I made for myself, to make me feel better and now Im putting it out there, said Amanda. I am afraid to be judged but at the same time Im hoping it opens a world for the kids the same as it has for me, get them involved, get them to read, get them to write, just develop something that will help them feel better and help them develop something they will be proud of.

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor When repeated requests for advance funding have been coming before council for decision, Councillor Rex Harwood asked for clarication as to why various purchases are being approved, prior to the nalization of the 2014 budget. Why are we handing out money before the budget is nalized, said Harwood. How many more of these will come down the line? He suggested shifting the nalized budget year end, in order to eliminate the practise of authorizing expenditures before the budget is in place. I think it would be better, said Chief Administrative Ofcer (CAO) Alan Parkin. There will be more of these. Parkin explained nalization of the budget is usually done after the provincial government completes their mill rate tax assessments and nalizes what they will be delivering to the municipalities. He said the scal year end could be moved up to the end of December, but it would be better to implement that move for 2015. He said that an open house for residents and ratepayers to review the draft budget is set for March 11 in Standard, and that moving the year end could be put forward for feedback. Acting Reeve Ben Armstrong claried the practise was traditionally acceptable as part of the budget process. He said sometimes even larger amounts were approved, in the case of equipment purchases, so that staff could place orders that would ensure delivery in an expedient manner. This was supported by staff comments that equipment orders were delayed as much as six to eight months for delivery from order dates. There were some smaller equipment requests included, and Councillor Brenda Knight suggested the CAO consider asking staff to hold requests for the smaller and less urgent items, until the budget is approved. The total request for the four equipment items was $113,500. Later, council also approved the capital equipment requests that were outlined in the interim budget. The reasoning was the money comes from the equipment reserve and was not inuenced by tax rate bylaws or mill rate increases. The nal 2014 budget may not be approved until April 1, 2014 which may be too late to have the benet of the low price quotes that may expire before then, indicated Transportation manager Dave Churchill. The early purchase of equipment will also expedite the use of the new equipment for our construction crews in the spring of 2014. NO ROOM AT THE Inn Animal control ofcers asked council to add $6,000 to the interim budget to cover backup facility costs for off-hour temporary connement of animals, prior to their delivery to the Calgary SPCA services. Ofcers stated there were times ,like Christmas holidays or after hours on weekends, when retention of animals could not be accommodated by the humane facility or the Town of Strathmore municipal enforcement, as they were closed. We dont have a facility now to hold them, said Sgt. Jeff Cyr. There have been six to 12 times where the Humane Society was not open. The $6,000 request is based on past numbers, times an estimate of $50 a day kenneling at fee, examination and parasitic shots, which totalled a potential estimate of $334 and costs if the animal is kept overnight. It also includes a buffer in case retention numbers increase for 2014. The proposal was to utilize the Animal Care Centre in Strathmore for times when the humane facility was closed. Councillors were tentative in the approval, reecting a spontaneous request by the Town of Strathmore in 2011, indicating the facility fee of $250 would be required for holding the animals. They suggested a written contract be drawn, so no surprises would come back to council for approval. There is a history there, said Parkin. but we have worked on that relationship over the years. It needs to be spelled out, we need to look at it more because of the past issues we have had, said Councillor Alice Booth. Councillor Harwood suggested including a one year timeline to the agreement, with clear fees and responsibilities dened in the agreement. The request was granted. ROSEBUD HALL LEASE REnEWED Council agreed to renew the $1 lease for property adjacent to the Rosebud Hall that is used for community purposes. The land contains the ball diamond and park. They also would be responsible for the payments on liability insurance for the property. The Rosebud Memorial Hall Association has been the steward of this land since 1975, said Treasurer Richard Zachariassen. It is an integral part of the recreation area that includes the community centre, playground and ball diamond. There was discussion whether the requested 50 year lease was appropriate, as most of the other county agreements were for 25 years. There was a suggestion of a ve year lease;

Google Earth vs Orthophoto

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor The question of approving a $125,000 Orthophoto project came under scrutiny by Wheatland County council on Feb. 4. How different from Google is this and is the cost worth it? questioned Councillor Rex Harwood. He also questioned why the photos had to be redone every two years. Senior County Assessor Dennis Klem claried the multiple functions the mapping provided: council uses the maps in planning decisions planning assessors utilize maps for spotting new property developments transportation staff use it for referencing roads all departments use it for historical referencing planning and front office staff use them for permit reference and client inquiry county and ratepayers can keeps track of oil and gas sites it is also available for public searches real estate, residential and commercial developers and businesses make use of them Rockyford and Standard also benet for planning purposes Klem said imagery on Google Earth is delivered through satellite, and while images are crisp in urban areas, the rural areas are not. When the image is zoomed, it loses clarity. They also present images that may be older than two years old and because Google is marketdriven, more recent pictures are in urban areas. The orthophoto gives good clarity on zoom and the dates of images are conrmed. He said once users are familiar with the website, a search takes less than one minute to access images. There may be some businesses interested in purchasing imagery or prints from the site. Klem indicated the more frequent the photos, the more up-to-date data is presented. He stated the photos are taken in the spring, before ground cover and tree foliage is in place. It is one of the reasons the approval was asked for in advance. The project is shared through a regional collaboration agreement with the Town of Strathmore, Rocky View County and Wheatland County. The countys share is $65,000, with $40,000 applied for through grants and the nal $25,000 taken from the continuity reserves. Rocky View County would pay $58,000 with $23,000 coming from grants and nally Strathmore would pay $2000, with $1200 supplied through grants. Councillors approved to move ahead with the project, but requested that an agreement between all parties be put in place so responsibility was clear if grant money was denied. 2014 FIRE GUARDIANS Council approved the list of re guardians submitted by staff. There were eight individuals from the county ofce appointed. The rationale was to make sure someone was on hand for the public at all times. Each county area requires two guardians. Both Hussar and Rosebud are short one person. Guardians are: Carseland: Ryan Hauswirth and Frank Volvik Cluny: Frank and Dany Tschetter County ofce: Alan Parkin, Judy Unsworth, Jeff Cyr, Jason Regehr, Pat Lietch, Russ Munchrath, Dave Churchill and James Laslo. The total fee for Wheatland County is $3,314. As an update, the association has held their AGM and elected ofcers and are moving forward with governance work. The association has contracted HDR Corporation to come up with a development plan for the project by spring of 2014. They have notied some of the membership that their fees are in arrears. Notices have been sent that full payment is required or memberships will be terminated. Spring will also sprout an information session for members. Details on the session will be posted on the SAEWA website. www. saewa.ca. GLEICHEN wATER LOOKS AND TASTES BAD BUT IS SAfE Transportation and Infrastructure manager Dave Churchill wants to assure Gleichen residents their water is safe to use. Recently the manganese levels have increased, discolouring the water and effecting its taste. Applications of chlorine have been introduced to mediate the situation. It is a delicate balancing act, said Churchill. but we dont want to put too much chlorine in. Manganese crystals leach into the water from the banks of the reservoir under low oxygen conditions. It is something that occurs on yearly basis. Staff have been reporting the changes to health ofcials and response is there are no health concerns evident. SHORTAgE Of MECHANICS Advertisements posted by the county for licensed and heavy duty mechanics has generated no candidates with the needed qualications. Churchill expects that the oil industry has thinned the pool of available talent. Labour statistics show that demand for auto and heavy duty mechanics will increase by 17 per cent by 2020. It is estimated there are more than 1,000 unlled jobs across Canada for skilled mechanics. One factor is seasoned mechanics are retiring; all of them from the post-war baby boom. Fixing autos used to be a teen interest, but it is becoming less of a draw in a digital age, in spite of the increased digital components put into a working automobile.

Fire Hall app to aid rst responders

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter A Drumheller-based company has created an app that is making the lives of reghters a little easier. The app, which can be found at Firehallutility.com, alerts rst responders through text message when a call is sent out. Those who respond can do so by clicking on a link that will send them a map to the call location, while simultaneously being registered as responding to the call. What happens when reghters do that is it shows who is coming to the call so that when you get here to the station you can see everybody thats responded and you know youve got enough people to go, said Randy Adams, one of the three partners involved with Appinco Software, creating the software. Adams has been a reghter for a number of years, spending time with the Drumheller detachment for one year, the Strathmore Rural Fire Department for 13 years and is currently a member of the Strathmore Fire Department. Whoever acknowledges the call will be able to see the quickest route to the location on the map, and is given driving directions. This information is also sent to the re hall where a display app shows the call details, a map and a list of responders. This information can also be found in the truck on an iPad. That text message has some intelligence. It knows who clicked on it and thats how you can see who is coming to the call, said Adams. Strathmore and Wheatland County have all of the re hydrant locations loaded into a database, which can also be found on the Fire Hall Utility app. You can see exactly where the hydrants are, so you go to wherever your call is and you know where the closest hydrant is, said Adams. It may seem like such a simple device, but the time it is saving is invaluable. Every reghter has a radio that they keep nearby, whether in their car while working, or on their nightstand at night; with a phone, though, it is almost always in a persons pocket. In the old days you would get the notication and then head to the re hall, talk to the dispatch centre and they would give you call information. You would write that down, look up the address on the map and gure out which map its on, example map 15, you get that and look at the best route to get to the call. Its a very manual back and forth and theres room for reading things wrong, said Adams. Now instead of taking those extra minutes to pull the map and determine the best route, reghters can come to the hall, gear up, jump in the truck and basically just go. They will still acknowledge

that they received the page or are getting ready to respond, and would probably still grab the full map just as a back-up, but all the guys will have the same information and route mapped out to the call on their smart phone and on the trucks iPad. All of the calls are logged as well, so the chief or one of the members could look at the last 25 or the last 500 calls and see what type of call they were, what time of day and how many people responded. Visually this helps with seeing on the map that there are lots of calls at a certain intersection or more alarm calls in one area versus another. It will also help when collecting statistics to create quarterly or annual reports. I think this is a great program, its current, its new, its updated on a regular basis. Everybody likes using it, it gets all the messages out when we want them, it gives us direction on where to go when theres a re, said Strathmore Fire Chief Muir Furzer. The mapping is awesome, I mean its just perfect. Instead of us looking around for residences now, trying to nd a house number, we look on the map, there it is. Theyve done a great job putting it together and theyre adding more as time goes on. Adams and his two partners launched the app a year ago. He joined to provide technical support and because he has emergency services experience as well he can help with the business development aspect of it. When many people started carrying around smart phones about three years ago was when things really got started. Everyone has got one (a smart phone) so that was really the brainchild, was to take advantage of the technology everybody has in their pocket. So we have now got almost 50 customers, Canada and the U.S and were looking to expand, said Adams. The rst 60 days are free to try and after that the pricing is based on each departments call volumes, varying between $400 and $1,000 per year. ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Ten teams sent 160 of their young tyke hockey players to the Family Centre for Family Day on Feb. 17, for the annual Strathmore Storm Tyke Tournament. Two teams from Indus, two from Airdrie, one each from Brooks and High River, and four from Strathmore all played three exhibition games and were awarded hardware. Because theyre ve or six-years-
old, and its their rst or second year in hockey, it was a lot, Charla Flett said, the tournaments coordinator. Its all about fun. Its just totally focused on giving these little guys a chance to play other opponents from other teams. Flett mentioned that events like this dont happen without full volunteer support. We had a committee of 10 volunteer parents, then about 60 parent volunteers from scorekeeping, to rafing,
to selling 50/50 tickets. Of course then you add to that, every team has about four volunteer coaches, she said. Flett said that though the players were excited for hockey, they also enjoyed meeting mascots, getting temporary tattoos, and devouring the food pancake breakfast and pizza lunches. The UFA Bisons presented trophies to all tournament players following their games. Its great to have those big guys here, Flett said.
First medal for Holy Cross

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) sent a mixed curling team to South Central Zones from Feb. 14-15 in Drumheller, and for the rst time in the schools history, earned a bronze medal in the sport. HCC won against Cochrane, but lost to Hanna and Morrin in round robin play. In the semi-nals against Hanna once more, HCC dropped 9-6, but earned bronze in the process. Im very pleased with the kids. They were very excited to go, HCC coach May Budzey said. Considering the amount of time that we had to practice, we were really pleased with how we did. Their rst games were a lot stronger than their semi-nal game; part of that might be a little bit of tiredness. The team, consisting of Shaylene Magwood, Josh Hauk, Chelsey Hanna, and Ben Budzey, had only played one game together an exhibition 6-3 win over Strathmore High School. Though they practiced a few times in Strathmore, they never had the chance to in Drumheller. I think the only thing we could have improved on as a team is practicing a bit more, getting used to the ice a bit. The ice was very different from Strathmore, said skip Ben Budzey. A mixed Holy Cross team went to zones last year and did not place; though HCC did not move onto provincials, they were still content with their nish. I thought I curled pretty well. There were shots that I just missed by nothing really. It all comes down to making one more shot, Ben Budzey said. Of course there were shots that we all wish we could have made that probably could have made a difference in the game. All the games we lost were pretty close.

COMING TOGETHER IN COMPETITION During this second week of the Winter Olympics, one might take time to reect on what is taking place in our midst. At four year intervals, the nations of the world send their best athletes to compete faster, higher, stronger ... to be judged as to their relative standing in the world. Not as a matter of nancial success or opportunity or even popularity, but as to the skill on the day(s) of competition. While many prefer to own the podium, or only count gold medals (silver and bronze being a loss to gold), others appreciate the relative rankings of the competitors, and how they have improved or not. Even to see the humanity of helping a competitor, like giving a ski or a pole to one in need without reckoning the consequences to the self, is a beautiful thing. The Greeks started this process among the known Hellenistic world. No politics were to interfere with the pureness of sporting skill and competition. Truces were declared and safe passage was accorded to all the competitors. Actual competition was the thing. The revival of this process in the modern era began with the Summer Games in 1896, and later the Winter Games in 1924. Different countries excel at different types of sporting events. Some competitions had to be cancelled due to recent wars (1916, 1940, 1944 summers, and 1940 and 1944 winters). Some suffered widespread boycotts (1980 summer in Moscow, and 1984 summer in Los Angeles) when large numbers of nations withheld their athletes in protest of the host countrys politics (tit for tat!). These things point out our weaknesses, rather than our strengths. Could we not have tried harder to tolerate opposite opinions by our brother nations? Could we not have called a truce and afforded safe passage for the revered competition to take place? Could we not have laid down our arms and reconciled with our brothers, instead of withholding our athletes? (The records from those Games always have an asterisk to denote that not all countries were in the competition that time). The opening ceremonies always show the athletes of each nation entering as a group. The closing ceremonies always show the intermingling of the athletes with outt trading and camaraderie in common, where national boundaries have come down. The value of the competitiveness is to force us to do our best. The value of the competition is to show us that we are all in this together, regardless of background. When Zimbabwe can send a skier, and Jamaica a bobsled team, we all benet in knowing them. And the Bermuda team always wears their shorts even at the Winter Games! Through the magic of the digital age we can see the events live (in spite of the eleven hour time difference this time) and experience the joys and sorrows instantly and simultaneously. Following a matchup of ery emotions a rough 2-1 loss to the St. Albert Sports Raiders the UFA Bisons ended their regular season with a 3-1 win against CAC Gregg Distributors on Feb. 16 at home. This placed them in fourth for the upcoming playoffs; they had originally hoped for a rst place, or second place nish, and a bye through to the second round. We played good this weekend during both games, Bisons coach Dan MacDonald said. You want to be good going into the playoffs. I just think that we could score more goals were getting good chances, we just not getting as many goals as wed like. Against St. Albert on Feb. 15, Matthew Forchuk tied up the game on the power play. St. Albert pulled ahead 2-1 at the beginning of the third, also on the man advantage, and held on for the rest of the night. Against CAC the following day, Forchuk again scored on the power play. Troy Van Tetering and Zach Giroux found the back of the net as well. I think (the game against CAC) really helped, because that team is ghting for rst place in the North Division. So thats a real good team we beat, MacDonald said. That helped ease the sting of Saturday (against St. Albert). The Bisons nished with 45 points. The Calgary Royals nished with 48 for second, and the Calgary Buffaloes placed third with 46. MacDonalds squad will face off against the Calgary Flames for the rst round, who had a 9-18-8 record in comparison to the Bisons 21-113. We feel condent about playing them, MacDonald said. But playoffs are always different, say if you get a hot goalie in a three game series. We have to score, its just something we have to keep working at. The Bisons won both matchups against the Flames this season 3-1 on Dec. 21, and 3-2 on Feb. 2. The Bisons opened the best-of-three series with a home game on Feb. 19 at the Strathmore Family Centre (result not available as of press time). Game 2 is slated for Feb. 22 (12:15 p.m.) in Calgary at the Father David Bauer Arena. If necessary, Game 3 will take place on Feb. 23 (2 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre. Should the Bisons be victorious through the rst round, they will play either rst-seeded Red Deer or secondseeded Calgary Royals dependent on who wins the Lethbridge and Calgary Buffaloes series.
In their second last game of the season, the Wheatland Braves blew out the Lacombe Rockets at home 6-2 on Feb. 15. With strong play through the last portion of the season, the peewee Braves finished fourth, and will face Airdrie in the first round of the playoffs.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Finishing off their season with two wins, the Wheatland peewee Braves placed fourth with a 15-13-3 record. This means the Braves will have home ice advantage against the fth place Airdie Lightning for the rst round in the playoffs; however, the Braves have yet to win against Airdrie this season, having lost 3-1 on Sept. 21, and tied 3-3 on Dec. 22. I think Airdries going to be a challenge, Braves coach Keith Klemmensen said. Theyre a good team to play against. So far, theyve been better than us. In their last two matchups of the season, the Braves defeated the Lacombe Rockets on Feb. 15 by a score of 6-2, and also trounced Red Deer the next day, 6-1. The rst period we had against TBS up in Red Deer, was probably as good a period of hockey that Ive had from a peewee team. That was outstanding, Klemmensen said. We were completely doing everything right the defense was moving the puck at the right time, everyone was supporting, giving an option to the puck carrier. Against the Rockets, though the score was tied 2-2 in the third, the Braves had a four goal effort in the last seven minutes of play. Hassan Akl, Kyle Crnkovic, Cole Berg and Calvin Vergouwen had two points each. In the matchup against Red Deer Mohammed Hakim had a goal and an assist, as did Tarun Fizer. Kyle Crnkovic nished with two goals and a helper, and Majid Kaddoura assisted on two markers as well. I really felt like they were very mature in the dressing room, Klemmensen said. It was we have to go out and do this and do a good job of it. BYE FOR FIRST The Wheatland Warriors were led by Cole Clayton on Feb. 14 against the Airdrie Lightning, as he scored both goals in the 2-1 win. Feb. 16 against the Southwest Rockies, Joel Krahenbil had two goals, and Ryan Bell had two helpers, but the Warriors nished their season with a 3-3 tie. They receive a bye to the second round, by nishing rst with a 26-4-3 record. CHIEFS TO FAcE LAcOMbE OR RED DEER They nished their season with a 4-3 loss to the Foothills Bisons on Feb. 15, and now the Wheatland Chiefs will nish fourth or third in the standings dependent on other teams games. Wheatland was down 4-1 with a goal from Kyle Rosolowski, and almost tied it in the third with efforts from Mckay Bray and Quinton Peplinski, but fell short. If the Chiefs place third they will play the sixth Red Deer Elks, but if they place fourth, they will face fth place Lacombe. Their record for the year was 17-14-2.
Spartans learn to play with consistency

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartans traveled to Okotoks on Feb. 12 only to be trounced once again by Holy Trinity Academy on the varsity boys basketball court. The Spartans had lost to Holy Trinity 78-40 on Dec. 11, and this time, lost by an even greater margin of 96-64. They shot the ball well from behind the line, Spartans coach Ken Smith said of his opposition. Theyre one of the top teams in the province. Theyre really big, strong, athletic theyre huge. The Spartans allowed 25 points in the rst quarter, and 30 points in the third. We lost the rst, second, and third quarters. The third was the worst, Smith said. We gave them too big of a cushion at the start. We wanted to be competitive. In the fourth quarter, the boys showed that they could play, and make adjustments. They did a great job. In the fourth, SHS only allowed Holy Trinity to score 13 points. We controlled the game in that quarter there, it was a real good feat. They saw some things that we hadnt been prepared for offensively and defensively, Smith said. We have to limit our turnovers; again, thats our Achilles heel. We turned the ball over 20 or so times, and they converted on every one of them. Thats a minimum of 40 points. Scoring roughly 60 points is enough to win a high school basketball game Smith said, but the team still needs to work on their defense. Hes looking at veteran Adrian Doig to lead the charge. He was a warrior in there. He really turned the game

We have had Chewy for over 5 years now, he was a wild and aggressive cat when he rst came to us, but after working hard with Chewy these past few years he has almost overcome his shyness and fear of people. The cat who used to hide in the corner now will rub all over us and purr with content -especially when we give him a little canned food. He loves to be scratched on his back and will reach out to hold our hand if he wants more. Chewy still has the tendency to run and hide when he is startled with fast movement or loud noises, so he should not go into a home without young children. We know with some more time and a very loving and caring owner, he will be as condent as a regular house cat. Chewy is bonded to several cats at the sanctuary...if interested in adopting Chewy, we are hoping he can go with one of his buddys into a new home. Please email to inquire. Josh Lawal led the Spartans to their rst victory over Brooks by a score of 73-52 with a 20-point effort, but the team was brought down by the McCoy Colts in their next matchup, 79-42. This placed SHS in the bronze medal game against Kate Andrews High School. Im the happiest I can be, Smith said after the Kate Andrews game. Its the rst time this year we played all four quarters of basketball. We limited our turnovers. We can do better, but the boys showed a lot of strength. The Spartans were consistently down ve points throughout the game 35-30 at the half, and 54-49 at the end of the third. However, with 20 seconds remaining, SHS brought it within one, 71-70. Josh Lawal executed perfectly, Smith said. All the players on the oor did their roles, and it was awesome. The Spartans missed the winning shot, and fouled Kate Andrews, who capitalized on those opportunities the nal was 74-71. We left a lot of points on the oor from the line. If they hit those, we wouldve had the game, Smith said. Strathmore High School has their next league game against Strathcona Tweedsmuir on Feb. 26.

Spartan girls climbing

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Strathmore High School (SHS) Spartan girls basketball team lost to Holy Trinity Academy (HTA) on Dec. 11, by a narrow score of 54-52 however, that was their rst game of the season. The varsity girls have only suffered one loss in league play since returning from Christmas break; they revenged their December game against HTA on Feb. 12, by a score of 61-36. That rst game was the rst time we had everybody together, girls coach Dion Galandy said. (This time) it was good. Were sort of building on our positive play here. Galandy expressed that there was nothing against HTA that his girls did poorly on the court. They played a very good game they minimized turnovers, they capitalized on steals, and shot well, he said. SHS has found success not just in league play, but exhibition tournaments as well. In the Magrath Tournament from Feb. 14-15, the ladies defeated Winston Churchill High School who are fourth in provincial standings by a score of 59-46. Injuries took over after that, Galandy said, as they lost to Magrath 57-42, and McCoy 56-42. We were down to seven girls. Weve got a couple of injuries still going on, he said. Not too crucial, but played well enough on the weekend to show we can certainly be a top ten team. SHS has their next league game against Foothills Composite High School at home on Feb. 27. The Spartans dropped their last meeting, 72-39 on Jan. 8. Were playing pretty good as of late. Foothills will be a question mark, I dont know, well see what happens, Galandy said. As long as my injuries are healed, it might be a pretty interesting game. Foothills is 4-0 on the season to Strathmores 4-2 record. Strathmore has 317 points for to Foothills 257, but Strathmore has also allowed 265 points in comparison to Foothills 157. Strathmores best recent nish on the varsity girls basketball court was a bronze in 2011, whereas Foothills won silver in 2013, and gold in 2012.
We hope these small sections of memories from former students and staff have prompted you to think about your memories and to come out to celebrate the 100th. YEAR OF CARSELAND this summer and reminisce some more!

January 2, 1929 February 16, 2014 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Van Verdegem on February 16, 2014. She is survived by her loving husband, George; daughter Diana (Wyman) Jones; son Doug (Karen) Van Verdegem; grandchildren Chris Dugdale (Shannon), Kevin Dugdale, Steven St. Louis (Janelle), Jonathon Van Verdegem, and Krysta Van Verdegem; great-grandchildren Cassidy Dugdale, Braiden Dugdale, Megan Dugdale; siblings Viola (Gordon) Hilton, Helen Duft, and Clarence (Barbara) Bartelen. She was predeceased by her brothers Clarence Bartelen, and Anton Bartelen, sister Alice Schmaltz, great-granddaughter Destiny Dugdale, and her parents Joseph and Celina Bartelen. Mary was born in Strathmore, and married George Van Verdegem on November 21, 1950. They started farming together in the Strathmore area where they continued to live their entire lives. Their daughter Diana was born in 1952, and their son Douglas followed in 1955. Mary was a long-time member of the CWL, had a regular bridge club, and was an avid curler. She was very dedicated to her family, and enjoyed gardening and playing cards with friends. STEVE WILSON U19 Belle Ringette The Strathmore U19 girls had an away game against Rockyford this past Sunday, Feb. 16. Despite being short-handed with some of their teammates, the girls kept pace and on par with the Ringers. It was only in the last ve minutes of the rst period that Rockyford widened the gap on Strathmore, in spite of our girls excellent effort and shots on goal. Strathmore continued to play hard in the second period but even after getting two more goals it wasnt enough to topple the home team from their decisive lead. As of Monday, Feb. 17, Strathmore Ice is in fourth position in the league standings and desperately need to secure that position with wins in their last two league games on Feb. 23-24. Were all behind you girls - you can do it!

The Crowther Memorial Junior High School junior boys basketball team finished in first place at the Prairie Christian Academy Sabres Junior High Invitational Basketball Tournament on Feb. 15 at the Rick Down Athletic Centre. The boys won their first game 47-21 against Three Hills, and their second game 44-22 against Standard. For the gold medal game, Crowther defeated Olds Koinonia, 35-17.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Rocky Mountain Raiders nished their AMBHL season rst in the Ram South Division, with a 20-10-3 record. Their successful year continues, as they defeated Red Deer Black in their rst best-of-three playoff series with two straight wins: 3-1 on Feb. 11, and 4-2 on Feb. 15. In the 3-1 victory, Strathmores Kaden Hanas scored in the third. On Feb. 15, Strathmore-born Scott Desserres third period goal secured the win, and the series. Both Hanas and Desserre are onto their second year of bantam hockey. There are second years that will definitely need to be leaders, Raiders assistant coach Paden Grant said. Everybody on the team has to be a leader at this point. Theres really no rst year or second year mentality now its playoffs. Another Strathmore teammate on the Raiders, Isaac Benoit, nished with 18 points on the year. Tyler Strath, also from Strathmore, nished with four. We played really well. We had a few ups and downs but we always came back to get the wins, Benoit said. Its really good to compete; its a good challenge. All teammates spoke of using their bodies and speed for success on the ice. I think we need to stay physical, and get lots of shots on net and crash the net whenever we get the chance, Strath said. Used to playing two games a week with breaks, teams in the AMBHL could be playing up to three depending on how long playoff series go. Its basically a series a week. Itll be a lot of hockey, and trying to t in practices in between. Itll be a busy schedule, but we dont want to be done, Grant said. Were playing good. We have to keep battling and hopefully we can have a good run. The Raiders and Red Deer Black split their games during the season a 7-2 win for Rocky Mountain on Dec. 22, and a 4-2 loss on Jan. 19. Weve had really close games against them, and a tough loss against them a little while ago, Desserre said. We just needed to keep playing strong, That never-give-up mentality is also in the head of teammate Kaden Hanas. We need to work on just staying consistent and playing our game, every game, he said. We just need to keep doing what were doing. Rocky Mountain will now face the winner of Airdrie and Red Deer White; should they prevail, they will go on to face the winner of the Calgary Division.

Qualifications Post secondary education related to project management.
