Masterpact NW and NT circuit breakers for coordination with Tesys F contactors

The standard Masterpact circuit breakers are very robust devices, designed to insure a high level of discrimination with the downstream protection devices. This requires tripping curves which are not adapted to offer on the same time coordination with downstream contactors. Masterpact NW H1T, H1TH and NT H2T circuit breakers have an adjusted tripping curve to offer coordination with the Tesys F contactors. The adjustment of the tripping curve concerns: pp a low threshold integrated instantaneous protection pp predefined settings for the long-time, short-time and instaneous releases (current and time). Applying these settings and sealing the adjustments of the control unit are a must to insure the coordination with the Tesys F contactors. Based on our experience, the use of a contactor between the generator and the transformer is mandatory in the DFIG design for wind turbine applications. On the same time, this solution offers important benefits like a much higher electrical endurance than the use of the circuit breaker alone for protection and switching. Please consult the Low voltage switchgear in wind turbines application note ref. COMLVP75_EN for more details about coordination and about the switchgear selection.

Masterpact NW H1TH is a reinforced version of Masterpact NW H1T in terms of breaking capacity and isolation, able to operate up to 690 V AC at high altitude, between 2000 and 5000 m. At altitudes higher than 2000 meters, the ambient air modifications (electrical resistance, cooling capacity) lower the below characteristics as follows:

The altitude impact on these breaker characteristics together with the availability of NW H1TH in fixed version only lead to the specific restrictions below, in order to avoid any possible electrical arc priming on the breaker top power connections while breaking a short-circuit.

Specific restrictions for NW H1TH circuit breakers

Maintenance requirements according to operating conditions

Wind turbine operating conditions involve various environmental stresses: wide temperature variations, humidity, vibrations (low frequency and high frequency) and electrical stresses: frequent electrical transient phenomena due to connection and disconnection, high frequency voltage disturbance caused by converters, etc.

Ambient temperature

Masterpact devices can operate under the following temperature conditions: pp the electrical and mechanical characteristics are stipulated for ambient temperatures of -25 C to +70 C pp circuit breaker closing is guaranteed down to -35 C by manual operation (pushbutton) Storage conditions are as follows: pp -40 C to +85 C for a Masterpact device without its control unit pp -25 C to +85 C for the control unit.

Extreme atmospheric conditions

Masterpact devices have successfully passed the tests defined by the following standards for extreme atmospheric conditions: pp IEC 60068-2-1: dry cold at -40 C pp IEC 60068-2-2: dry heat at +85 C pp IEC 60068-2-30: damp heat (temperature +55 C, relative humidity 95 %) pp IEC 60068-2-52 level 2: salt mist.

Vibrations

Masterpact devices have successfully passed the tests defined by the following standards: pp IEC 60068-2-6 for the levels. pp 2 to 13.2 Hz: amplitude 1 mm. pp 13.2 to 100 Hz: constant acceleration 0.7 g. Non-standard vibration environments require special attention. If no specific adaptation is implemented on the installation to reduce the stress on the breaker to standard conditions, the products performance may be impacted. Excessive vibration may cause tripping, breaks in connections or damage to mechanical parts.

Maintenance guide 06/2012

We strongly recommend installing Masterpact in such a way that environmental stresses are within tested limits. Masterpact installation shall be designed in order to reduce vibration in particular (mechanical decoupling from power converter). To maintain Masterpact's operating and safety characteristics from the begining to the end of its service life, Schneider Electric requests that systematic checks and periodic maintenance be carried out by qualified personnel, as indicated in the "Masterpact maintenance guide".
