COMBIMUX

With the standardised network management interface, the system can be connected to and integrated in the overall maintenance philosophy of the service provider.

APPLICATIONS

OMBIMUX is a very versatile system and can be used for many short and medium haul applications in the access and junction network and for multiplex applications in the trunk network. Although applications of COMBIMUX will differ per network layer, all requirements are met because of the cost-effective and flexible way in which the system is built up. Access network Installed equipment in the access network is spread over many sites, even as far as business centres and offices, which gives a requirement for network management systems with single ended maintenance capabilities. A typical application of COMBIMUX in the access network is the transportation of 2 Mbit/s digital datastreams over optical fibres. The 2 Mbit/s bitstreams can contain 30 speech channels originating from a primary PCM multiplexer, such as Lucent Technologies 8TR 641, or from a network access system such as the SLC-120. It could also contain data from ISDN, data from digital PABXs, videoconferencing systems and other digital sources. The most commonly used configuration involves point-to-point links. Using COMBIMUX,

elecommunications providers and administrations around the world are experiencing an increasing demand in the access network for connection of new subscribers and to provide these subscribers, and their existing customers, with a wide range of services. The subscriber is becoming more sophisticated and demands higher service quality and greater flexibility than ever before.

This demand in the access network is creating pressure on the junction and trunk networks to meet the higher traffic requirements. Because of the rapidly changing needs of subscribers, transmission systems must be easily upgradeable, expandable or reconfigurable within short installation times and with a minimum of interruptions. The COMBIMUX system combines optical line systems, multiplex systems, protection switches, and a powerful supervision system, fully meeting the requirements mentioned above. The high bit rate capability of optical fibres means that optical networks are well prepared for future upgrades. Current optical transmission systems can span long distances without using regenerators, making them very cost-effective.

cost of fibre and offer built-in protection (see figure 2). Other examples of configurations are 8 times 2/34 Mbit/s multiplexers, 8 times 34/140 Mbit/s multiplexers and a 2/140 Mbit/s multiplex system with double optical outputs for line protection and add/drop options. Trunk network A typical application of COMBIMUX in the trunk network is in multiplexing 2 Mbit/s digital data streams into 140 Mbit/s data streams, providing inputs for links at 140 Mbit/s and 565 Mbit/s. Features Some of the main features of COMBIMUX are: Standard CCITT interfaces & high reliability Standard 19 shelf construction, meeting stringent EMC and ESD requirements Robust construction Access, junction and trunk applications Modular transmission units, offering systems on a card Capacity for up to eight transmission units per shelf Powerful maintenance and alarm function with fault localisation Single-ended maintenance User-friendly interface for installation and maintenance Auto-test Network manager interface

point-to-point links can be made to cover distances between 0 and 145 kilometres without regenerators at 34 Mbit/s and 140 Mbit/s. The links may be with or without 1 + 1 line protection. Along utilities and railways, a linear Add/drop system can be implemented to add and drop traffic at regular points along the lines (see figure 3).

Junction network A typical application of COMBIMUX in the junction network is the transport of 2, 34 and 140 Mbit/s signals. A configuration often used in the junction network is the optical ring at 140 Mbit/s. COMBIMUX can be configured to form ring-shaped networks, which take advantage of the relatively low

The COMBIMUX system consists of a single shelf with power supply units, a supervision unit and eight transmission units positions. These positions can be equipped with any combination of the following four units: a 2/34 Mbit/s multiplexer; a 34/140 Mbit/s multiplexer; an Optical Line Terminating Unit (OLTU) at 34 Mbit/s; and a 140 Mbit/s OLTU. Shelf All units, forming one or more system ends, and the connector field are housed in a 19 single shelf. All internal interconnections are via a multi-layer backplane. Sub-D connectors are used to terminate tributary signals. If necessary, sub-D to coaxial connector adaptors can be used. Transmission Units The four transmission units can be used to realise almost any configuration. All the boards are pin-compatible and can therefore be inserted in any of the eight transmission slots. 2/34 Mbit/s muldex unit The 2/34 Mbit/s multiplexer multiplexes sixteen 2 Mbit/s bitstreams into a 34 Mbit/s bitstream using the standard CCITT multiplex formats. The 2 Mbit/s interfaces can be looped

locally or remotely with the help of the maintenance system. A 1+1 protection switch is integrated in the 34 Mbit/s interface. A single Printed Circuit Board (PCB) contains both multiplexer and demultiplexer. 34/140 Mbit/s muldex unit The 34/140 Mbit/s multiplexer multiplexes four 34 Mbit/s bitstreams into one 140 Mbit/s bitstream. A 1+1 protection switch is integrated in the 140 Mbit/s interface. The 34-Mbit/s interfaces can be looped, locally or remotely, with the help of the maintenance system. Both multiplexer and demultiplexer are contained on one PCB. 34 Mbit/s OLTU The 34 Mbit/s OLTU contains the

equipment for converting the HDB3-coded 34 Mbit/s electrical signal into the optical line signal, and vice-versa. The complete unit, comprising optical transmitter, receiver and line coder/decoder (5B/6B), is contained on a single PCB. A loop can be set at the 34 Mbit/s electrical interfaces, locally and remotely via the maintenance system. The OLTU provides the Auxiliary Transmission Channel necessary for single-ended maintenance, customer channels and for the EOW. Two power budget versions, 21 dB and 31 dB, are available. 140 Mbit/s OLTU The 140 Mbit/s OLTU contains the equipment for converting the CMI-coded 140 Mbit/s electrical signal into the optical line signal, and vice versa. The line code applied is 5B/6B. The complete unit, comprising optical transmitter, receiver and line coder/decoder, is contained on a single PCB. A loop can be set at the 140 Mbit/s electrical interfaces, locally and remotely via the maintenance system. The OLTU provides the Auxiliary Transmission Channel necessary for single-ended maintenance,

at both sides of the link are synchronised. On one card, a 2+1 protection switch has been realised. This saves external wiring. An N+1 protection switch system up to 4+1 fits in one shelf, 2 protection switch cards and 5 OLTUs (see figure 8). Higher numbers of N require a second shelf and a Through Patch Card (TRU) to transport switch request signals from the OLTUs to the Protection Switch Controller.

customer channels and for the EOW. Three power budget versions, 18 dB, 28 dB and 31 dB are available at 1300 nm. At 1550 nm, a power budget of 29 dB is available. N+1 protection switch The purpose of a transmission protection switch is to protect the continuity and quality of telecommunications services by minimizing the effects or potential effects of a transmission failure. In the case of N+1 protection switching N paths are protected by one restoration path. If this path is not used for restoration, it can be used for low-priority traffic. The COMBIMUX protection switch consists of a protection switch card and a protection switch controller. The protection switch card can be fitted in any transmission slot and can be cascaded to create any N for N+1 protection switching up to 7. The protection switch controller can be fitted in the AUX2 slot. Via embedded telemetry channels in the optical signals, the switches

The alarm and maintenance system is based on the philosophy used in all Lucent Technologies transmission equipment. Since all units of a COMBIMUX based network can be spread out over many sites, often unattended, remote terminals can be controlled from one single end, the local exchange terminal. The AMU collects and displays local alarms and passes this information to higher level management systems via hard contacts and a standard TABS/ITU Q interface. The AMU is also used for configuration and test set-up. The transmission units have various loop facilities that can be set with the AMU. An auto-test of the system is also controlled by the AMU.

Application With the protection switch Optical Fibre routes with COMBIMUX 140 Mbit/s OLTUs can be protected as well as Lucent Technologies 565 Mbit/s system. Any other optical line system or digital radio system at 140 Mbit/s can be protected, provided they have alarm outputs such as hard contacts or TTL levels.

Alarm and maintenance system The Alarm and Maintenance Unit (AMU) performs the following functions: Collects maintenance and alarm data from all units Configures the system Monitors performance Locally displays maintenance and alarm data Provides network management interface

Engineers Order Wire An EOW card can be inserted in the subrack to provide EOW facilities. Some features are: Selective call Broadcasting Standard telephone jack Any telephone set (DTMF) can be used. System examples Examples of possible COMBIMUX systems and their associated subrack configurations are shown in figures 4, 5, 6 and 7.
