You are what you wear When meeting a stranger, the general appearance and clothing are two

important characteristics we use to unconsciously formulate a first impression. Ones appearance says hello before his mouth actually says it. Most people are afraid to admit that physical appearance is important to them. I wonder if such denial is because they dont want to seem superficial, or that they are working hard to pretend it isnt true. Judging people through their clothing and physical features has great implications for understanding and challenging prejudice and discrimination. Clothing and appearance are argued to be a key to revealing ones personality. An interesting study performed by psychology scholars at University of West Virginia in the United States, considered the influence of clothing on the judgments of instructors in college. The outcome of the study suggested that when teachers dressed more formally, such as when they wear suits and dress shoes, they are perceived as more intellectual and credible. But, when instructors dress more casually, wearing jeans and a t-shirt, they were rated higher on sociability, extraversion, and having more interesting presentations. In another study in Brazil, college women rated men who were dressed in a socially formal, socially informal, or sportively fashion. The socially formal dressed individual was rated as less extraverted, sympathetic, charming, and attractive than the other models as well as having a more rightist political ideology. The socially informal dressed individual was rated as more outgoing, friendly and modest. These studies mentioned above show how choice in clothing can communicate responsibility, status, power, and the ability to be successful. Having a good appearance does not mean exaggeration on fashion and style. Good physical appearance is more than just dressing well. It is feeling good and content from within. Never judge a book by its cover, but there is more probability that a book with a nice cover is a good read. Similarly, judging people upon their appearance might be unfair, nevertheless good appearance is an essential key to success. A physically attractive person, who is well-groomed, can impress upon people. A handsome and fashionable politician can draw the attention of the masses, although, of course, he also has to be man of substance. For example, former president of the United States, John F. Kennedy was known for his dainty looks and elegant style, although he was an astute politician as well. Good appearance enhanced his public image and provided him more opportunities in life.
