Under the control of Belgiums King Leopold II (1865-1909), millions of Africans in the Congo faced especially brutal treatment. European slave supervisors had to ensure their African slaves produced huge quantities of rubber. If the slaves did not produce enough, supervisors were required to cut off their hands as punishment.

Since Europeans had such strong economic interests in most parts of Africa, they wanted to make sure local leaders acted properly.

Europeans appointed leaders who would not interfere with their plunder of raw materials.

After facing brutal treatment and powerlessness, Africans in German East Africa rebelled in 1905.
Natives armed themselves with spears and poisoned arrows.

They burned cotton fields and destroyed German forts.

Even though many Africans supported their goals, the rebels could not overcome the Germans. Germans fought back, using their machine guns to kill 389 African soldiers. Germans also destroyed wells, livestock, and food stores. The famine that followed killed between 100,000 and 300,000 natives.

The Zulu tribe stood up to the British, winning several battles.

After the British began to use machine guns, the Zulu proved to be no match and the British gained control of all of South Africa.
