Why Humus? Its accepted and recognized that humus is the indicator, cause and effect of a healthy
soil. When Organic matter breaks down in the soil, the biotic community called the Soil Food Web
eventually turns it into Humic substances and Non-humic substances. At Soil Secrets we have
concluded that humus is the best material to use as a delivery system of our powerful soil inoculums.
Compared to compost, Earth Magic is many times more concentrated in humus, trace minerals and

Why Microbes? There are many trophic levels of life in a healthy soil, contributing to the long-term

constructed soils, these trophic levels of microbiology are severely damaged and unable to recover in a

Humus, Microbes and Minerals: humification is the secret and key to Earth Magic and our
Inoculums viability. Soil Secrets, manufactures and markets Cultured Humus
TM
under the trade
names TerraPro and Earth Magic. The key to the process is proprietary, but Michael will say that an
exact process of increasing the reaction rate between oxygen and humus precursors, such as phenols and
hydroxybenzoic acids, to form quinones is the key. Amino acids produced by the rapid microbial
degradation of proteins react with quinones which then form complex, durable molecules called humic
polymers or humic substances better know by most people as Humus. Balancing the humus precursors,
the phenols and acids along with amino acids and proteins are all part of the complex chemical and
biological equation that Michael has been working on for the better part of two decades. Its all natural
and organic the way Nature makes humus.
Humus - mineral complexes The microorganisms of primitive "Archaeobacteria release
compounded mineral ions from Rock Dust (included) so they are available for plant root uptake.
Archaeobacteria are collected from saltpans, hot springs, and volcanic regions all over the world by
Professional Microbial Biologists on contract with Soil Secrets. They are hardy and capable of living in
a wide range of environmental conditions. Also, due to their primitive nature they coalesce to work as a
team, yielding a high efficiency ratio in the soil.
These ions are chelated into the Organic acid fraction of the humus making them more biologically

More on Enzymes and Microbes: Enzymes are organic catalysts. Catalysts are defined as substances
that will speed up or alter the rate of chemical reactions without the substance being altered or used up
in the process.

Humification, Catabolism and Anabolism: Humification is the process by which humus is made in
nature from dead organic matter. Complex organic compounds, in the presence of moisture, oxygen,
aerobic microbes and enzymes, are broken down or transformed into humic compounds (Humic
Substances) in a process known as Catabolism and Anabolism. Catabolism means to break down and
Anabolism is to rebuild or build up. Enzyme action is specifically targeted to each reaction. For
example, protein-splitting enzymes will affect only proteins and not fats or carbohydrates. The enzymes
used in this process are amylases, protease, cellulase and lipase.

Bacteria utilize enzymes to utilize organic waste as a food. Bacteria are organisms classified as harmful
(pathogens) and harmless (non pathogenic). The bacterial cultures we select and use are indigenous to a
rich Soil Food Web and are often called soil born bacteria. The bacteria put into Earth Magic/TerraPro
and BetterGreen include a full spectrum of those recognized by government entities such as the EPA as
being naturally occurring indigenous to soils and therefore of no concern to human health.
We have also cultured into Earth Magic several species of fungi that are capable of surviving in
environments that are very low in available nutrients. They can break down difficult to decompose
organic materials and, with the help of organisms like protozoa (also cultured into Earth Magic), will
release these bound nutrients to plants.

to stimulate plant growth and fix atmospheric nitrogen into nitrogen available to plants
