USSA DANCE SPORT COMPETITION RULES


TERMS OF ENTRY: 1. Only bona fide registered students entered by the institutions, will be allowed to participate in USSA DANCE SPORT tournament (no late changes will be accepted without proof of registration). 2. All students must bring student cards, failure to do so may result in the couple being withdrawn from participation (identity of couples will be checked in marshaling area before they take the floor for the First Round). 3. No uncertified copies of student cards and proof of Registration will be accepted. 4. Certified Proof of registration must be accompanied by the identity document or certified copy of identity document. 5. An athlete found not cooperating with the above will be disqualified automatically. 6. Team managers are the only liaison officials for teams. FORMATION DANCE WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO SECTIONS (POOLS): Section (Pool) A: Top 4 Universities of the previous year in the formation section. Section B: The remainder of the Universities and also new entrants will make up this section. The last team that failed to make the top 3 in Pool (A) will automatically be relegated to Pool (B) for the following year. For Pool (B), a team that takes position (1) will be promoted to Pool (A) for the following year. If a University is absent in the A section, it will be relegated to the B section and team 5 in the previous year will be in A section, etc. FORMATION RULES (AS PER IDSF) 1. Formation may be held in two styles: a) In the Standard dances b) In the Latin American dances 2. Competition dress: Standard section: The mens dress must be black or midnight-blue. Latin section: The mens dress in colours is permitted, but all men of a team must have the same colour of dress. No properties are allowed.

3. Teams in the Standard category must base their routines on the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Slow Foxtrot and Quickstep with an optional maximum of 16 bars based on any dance including Latin American. 4. Teams in the Latin American category must base their routines on the Samba, ChaCha- Cha, Rumba, Paso doble and Jive and any other Latin American rhythm with an optional maximum of 16 bars in any dance, including Standard dances. 5. Solo work in the Standard category shall be restricted to 8 bars in any one dance used with a maximum of 24 bars over the whole presentation. This does not apply to the Latin American dances in which solo work is normally a part. 6. Lifts are not permitted in either category. Note: A lift is any movement during which one of the dancers has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of the partner. 7. No Formation team shall dance a routine exceeding 6 minutes including entry and exit. Of these 6 minutes, no more than 4 minutes shall be judged and must be clearly identified in recognisable fashion (beginning and end). 8. Adjudicators experienced in formation work should be selected. 9. Tapes or other audio systems shall be used. 10. Adequate arrangements must be made for team rehearsals, an equal amount of time being allocated to each team in the ballroom and with the music. 11. A chairman must be appointed. He must attend rehearsals and warn any team infringing the Rules. If the Rules are infringed during the contest, he will have the right to disqualify the team(s) after consultation with the adjudicators. 12. When there are more than 5 teams in a competition a second round must be held. The dance routine and music used at the rehearsal are the only permitted during the competition. No change of dress is permitted during the competition. Teams not complying with these requirements may be disqualified by the chairman. TEAM MATCH 1. Each Institution will have 4 couples for Standard and 4 couples for Latin. 2. Only four dances per style. Standard (Waltz, Tango, Slow Fox Trot and Quick Step) and Latin (Samba, Cha-Cha, Rumba and Jive). 3. No Couple or member of team is allowed to dance 2 dances per style. 4. No open work is allowed (Chairperson of adjudicators has the right to disqualify a team/ team member doing open work). 5. All team Match couples must sit in a designated area.

DRESS CODE 1) FEDANSA dress code will be strictly enforced (FEDANSA officials will have the right to disqualify a couple not adhering to this rule). SYLLABUS 1) FEDANSA National syllabus will be enforced (Please consult FEDANSA website for more info). Hoping all institutions will familiarize themselves with the above.
