discourse on the arts since antiquity, the historiography of this relationship have received far less attention, and the broad area of words about music or music literature generally, remains understudied. Significant recent scholarship however, has signalled the emerging importance of this area of study, and the conference aims to provide a forum for consolidated interdisciplinary discussion in this area, and to highlight and focus its innovative methodological potential that can be applied more broadly within musicology and literary and historical studies. 20-minute papers (with 10 minutes for questions) are invited on the following broad ideas: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. studies into the idea of music in literature the literary function of music and noise/sound in fiction writing studies that suggest how a literary awareness might alter our readings of specific musical works allusions to music in sacred as well as secular texts the effect of literature on musical composition philosophies of music history and biography the role of music writers (including music critics, historians, translators, composers, travellers, dilettantes) in the context of broader intellectual networks.

Proposal for panels (4 speakers over 2 hours) are also encouraged. Abstracts should be no more than 200 words and emailed by 1 March to Dr Paul Watt, paul.watt@monash.edu All papers will be considered for publication (in a revised and expanded format, and subject to peer review) for a book with a major scholarly publisher.
