AGAR Compact Unit

Introduction
The KEE Compact Unit is essentially a standard freight container enclosing a complete wastewater treatment plant for sanitary wastewater ows of 50 3 to 100 m /d. The unit can produce efuents to meet all environmental discharge requirements both in terms of BOD and Total Nitrogen requirements. The plant is fully automated, the processes are inherently simple, and as a result minimal operator intervention is required. treatment system with the following benets: Small foot print.

Effluent can meet all environmental discharge levels.

Inherent scalability. Add carriers for greater performance. Add parallel units for greater capacity. Can be supplied as a separate unit process. No Odours.

Easy delivery & installation in remote locations. Fast implementation with minimal logistical and staf ng requirements.

2. Requires minimal operator intervention due to mechanical simplicity and inherent robustness. 3. Produces an efuent with high degree of Nitrogen removal (low Total Nitrogen concentration) suitable for many applications with discharge to the environment (i.e., receiving waters, creek, etc). MBBR (Moving Bed Biological Reactor) technology is characterized by simple operational requirements, as it contains far less process units (compared with an equivalent

Activated Sludge system), and as a result such solutions are less prone to process upsets. The technology is often used for carbonaceous BOD removal. Although the process has good nitrication capabilities, it is a less commonly used process for Nitrogen removal, mainly due to denitrication limitations: due to the high Internal Recycle (IR) required, and the lack of an external carbon source, extensive denitrication (and the concurrent Total Nitrogen removal) is hard to achieve.

KEE compact-unit solution includes the following stages:

1. An anoxic pre-denitrication stage (used only when Nitrogen removal is required), facilitated by the use of oating media (moving-bed) and a mixer. Nitried wastewater is returned from the aerobic reactor to this stage by IR stream, and partial denitrication occurs on the biomass attached to the media. 2. The aerobic moving-bed reactor is where BOD removal and Ammonia nitrication takes place. The reactor, lled with oating media and equipped with an aeration system, generates air for oxygenation and mixing. Nitried efuent from the efuent-end of the reactor is recycled to the anoxic zone for partial de-nitrication (applicable to the Nitrogen removal option). 3. Efuent from the aerobic reactor is introduced into the new, patented media clarier unit, consisting of a combined sedimentation-denitrication ltration unit. The media clarier unit combines efuent ltration with de-nitrication, and is based on the same type of media used in the upstream biological units. Implementation of this process unit also allows the process to produce an efuent with very low (<15 mg/l) Total Nitrogen, as well as TSS concentrations, comparable to those produced in an activated sludge system.

Choice of two diversied congurations to match specic local applications

The KEE solution comes in two optional congurations: BOD removal only, and BOD & Nitrogen removal. Additional advantages include: Two options: 50 m3 / 100 m3 a day. Ability to upgrade capacity by adding parallel compact-units to the same site. Suitability to use the unit as an interim/temporary solution, as well as on a seasonal operation (e.g. resorts and hotels affected by high/ low season). The solution may also be provided as a turn-key service through selected Aqwise distribution partners. Each Compact Unit may be specically tailored to particular client specications.

Municipal and Industrial Solutions
KEE offers advanced wastewater treatment solutions for the Industrial and Municipal markets. These solutions signicantly increase the capacity and efciency of existing wastewater treatment plants, while minimizing the size of new plant deployments. The solutions may additionally facilitate in-plant reuse of the treated efuent with up to Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD). KEE family of solutions may be applicable to any type of biological process upgrade, from existing oxidation ponds, through Attached Growth to Activated Sludge. For new and existing installations, KEE offers various congurations of MBBR (Moving Bed Bio Reactor), IFAS (Integrated Fixed Film Activated Sludge), and FFAST (Fixed Film followed by Activated Sludge Treatment).

AGAR Applications
Capacity Increase Municipal: The municipality is required to increase the capacity of its wastewater plant due to increased ow-load and natural population growth. Industrial: The industrial plant is required to handle larger quantities of wastewater due to increased production capabilities. The AGAR Solution: increases the capacity of the wastewater plant by up to 50% without additional construction. The solution offers rapid deployment and minimal downtime.

AGAR technology
The proprietary AGAR (Attached Growth Airlift Reactor) technology is a result of more than a decade of intensive multidisciplinary research and development. Integrating Fixed Film and Suspended Growth technologies, it is considered as the 'next-generation' in biological wastewater treatment methods. By using KEE solutions, municipalities can cope with increased regulation, aging infrastructure and growing population. Industrial plants can meet the strict regulatory requirements for discharging wastewater to the environment or to municipal collection systems, and solve typical industrial problems such as variable inow, seasonal peaks, and high organic load. The AGAR technology combines a unique fully open and fully protected biomass carrier with a highly efcient aeration and mixing design. This results in superior effective surface area for biomass growth and optimal oxygen transfer efciency.

Quality Improvement - BOD and Nitrogen Removal Municipal: The municipality is required to improve the efuent quality to meet new stringent regulatory requirements. Industrial: The industrial plant is required to produce a higher quality efuent due to increased regulatory requirements or implementation of water-saving measures. The AGAR Solution: alters the biological environment, creating optimal conditions for enhanced removal of a wide variety of pollutants, including BOD and total Nitrogen removal.

Fast Recovery from Process Upsets
Municipal: The municipality experiences process upsets caused by shock load or storm-water hydraulic peaks, as well as toxic elements from industrial inuent. Industrial: The industrial plant experiences process upsets caused by shock loads, toxic materials, and inuent variations (peaks), such as seasonal uctuations. The AGAR Solution: operates as a buffer to streamline variable inow and organic loads, preventing biomass washout while promoting rapid recovery from toxic shocks.
