They are classified as exempt if they transport certain product such as produce/livestock, etc. Examples: School buses, taxis, ambulances o Private Carriers are not subject to economic regulation and typically transport goods for the company owing the carrier; companies typically own their own carriers because the cost of transportation is cheaper than subbing it out. Example: Walmart owns their own private fleet Five modes of Transportation o Motor Carriers Accounts for 33% of annual for hire transit expenditures. LTL Less than truckload vs. FTL Full truckload Types of motor carriers: o General freight carriers o Specialized carriers o Road trails o Rail Carriers Accounts for 10% of annual for hire transit expenditures. TOFC Trailer on flatcar service rail carriers own motor carriers to perform the last leg (Delivery from rail to destination) RTLS Real time location systems o Air Carriers Accounts for 15% of annual for hire transit expenditures. o Water Carriers
