Hose Assembly Installation

Satisfactory performance and appearance depends upon proper hose installation.
Excessive length destroys the trim appearance of an installation and adds unnecessary
costs to the equipment. Hose assemblies of insufficient length to permit adequate
flexing, expansion or contraction will cause poor power transmission and shorten the life of
the hose. The diagrams below offer suggestions for proper hose installations to obtain the
maximum performance and economy.
1. Where the radius falls below the
required minimum, an angle adapter
should be used as shown above to
avoid sharp bends in hose.

2. Avoid sharp twists or bends in the

hose by using proper angle adapters.

3. To prevent twisting and distortion,

hoses should be bent in the same
plane as the motion of the base to
which the hose is connected.

4. Obtain direct routing of hose through

the use of 45 and 90 adapters and
couplings. Improve appearance by
avoiding excessive hose length.

5. Even if there are changes in length

when the hose is pressurized, do not
clamp at bends, so that curves absorb
changes. Do not clamp high and low
pressure lines together.(If piping
design cannot be changed, protect
hoses with hose guards instead of
clamping)

6. Adequate hose length is most

important to distribute movement on
flexing applications and to avoid
abrasion and excess bending.

7. Since hose may change in length from

-4% to +2% under the surge of high
pressure, provide sufficient slack for
expansion and contraction.

8. To avoid twisting in hose lines bent in

three planes, clamp hose to move in
one plane.

9. Decrease the number of tubes and

accessories as practically as possible
and use proper adapters so that the
overall length will be minimized with a
good appearance brought forth.

10.
The lay line provided on the
hose cover will be used as a reference
line to examine whether or not the
installed hose is twisted. Also be sure
to tighten the union nut coupling with a
spanner applied to the hexagon part in
order to avoid the twist.

Pressure Loss
Relational Table of Flow Rate / Velocity / Hose Size

Example :

The flow rate of your system requirement is 150cm 3 per second.

Connect your straight edge from the 150cm3 per second flow rate
column to the recommended velocity range for pressure lines of 4
meters per second. The straight edge intersects at 04, so the
recommended hose size is 04.

Conditions
Hose Length : 10m(Excluding Coupling Lengths)
Fluid : Hydraulic Oil
Kinetic Viscosity : 32.0mm2 /S

Example
Hose I.D.-12(19mm), Length 5m (with couplings at both ends) ,Kinetic viscosity 32mm 2
/s , Flow rate 80/min

1. By the flow rate 80/min and hose I.D-12,find the hose pressure loss as 0.2MPa
from the graph above.
2. Pressure loss of a coupling is about the same as 1/10 of that of the hose.
3. 0.14MPa is estimated pressure loss of this hose assembly.

Tightening Torque
Follow the below tightening torque.
The tolerance is approximately 10%.
The application of each of the following torques is allowed on the prerequisite that
there is no oil left on the threads portion and inside of the nut and also that the
hexagonal part of each insert is firmly held by a spanner so as to prevent the
coupling from rotating together with hose.

When a split flange or a square flange is used for a hose connection, the bolts must be
tightened diagonally with the same torque applied. Otherwise, the flange will incur
damage, possibly followed by oil leakage.
