Gabrielle Guyton-Edmiston Collection Evaluation and Development Plan FRIT 7134- Spring 2012 February 19, 2012 Description

of the Site/Environment Scan I teach third grade at Dunwoody Springs Elementary School in Dunwoody, Georgia. DSES is in Fulton County and was established in 2000. Fulton County is a large system with fiftyeight elementary schools, nineteen middle schools, sixteen high schools, and seven start up charter schools. My school has approximately 764 students in pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. However, we have a 44% mobility rate, so that number is always changing. The racial make-up of DSES is 45% African-American, 26% Hispanic, 18% Caucasian, 8% multi-racial, and 3% Asian. We are a Title 1 school, and 72% of our students receive free and reduced lunch. There are ninety-five staff members at DSES. Of those, sixty-two are certified staff members. The third grade at Dunwoody Springs has 101 students in five homeroom classes. Of those students, twelve of them received Talented and Gifted services. Our TAG program is a pull out program, and the students are served one day a week. We have twelve special education students in third grade. One of those students only receives services for speech and language. The other eleven students receive services with our interrelated resource teacher. Six of those eleven students also receive speech and language services. We have twenty-two students in our English Speakers of Other Languages program. Eight of the ESOL students are monitored so they do not receive services anymore. However, if the monitoring teacher does not see progress in a student, the student may receive ESOL services again. Fourteen students receive ESOL services. Twelve of those students receive pull out services for 45 minutes each day. Two of those students receive push in services for 45 minutes daily. These two students receive push in service because they are with their special education teacher for the remainder of the day. The ESOL teacher pushes in to support these two students during Social Studies and Science. There are eleven students who receive Reading instruction support through the Early Intervention Program. These students were selected based on their CRCT-like scores from second grade. Second grade no longer takes the CRCT, so Fulton County chose to give the

CRCT-like test to help determine students strengths and weaknesses. Finally, twenty-four of our students are in advanced Math, and thirty-five students are in advanced Reading. The chart below shows our 3rd grade CRCT scores for 2011. Reading Math Language Arts Science Social Studies

Dunwoody Springs puts an emphasis on the use of technology by students and staff. The school currently has 94 laptops for use by the staff members and 335 desktop computers for use by the students. Additionally, we have 27 Promethean boards with a 28 th board arriving soon. All of the student desktops and teacher laptops have Promethean software on them. Most of the teachers who do not have a Promethean board have an ActivSlate. We have fifteen sets of ActiVotes that are shared among the teachers. We just purchased 3 ActivExpressions kits for the fourth and fifth grade teachers to share. These kits just came out this month. All teachers at DSES have been trained in creating flipcharts. Our media center has 17,500 books in circulation. There are 2,000 VHS and DVD movies available for teachers to check out. We have 200 audiobooks. The media center subscribes to twenty magazines. Ten of the magazines are for teachers and ten of the magazines are for students. Our media specialist expressed frustration that she has to spend a lot of money on the teacher magazines, but the teachers very rarely check them out. Curriculum Review/Mapping For my collection development plan, I chose third grade physical science which includes heat and magnets and the pollution and conservation section of life science. The standards are listed below. Heat Standards: S3P1. Students will investigate how heat is produced and the effects of heating and cooling, and will understand a change in temperature indicates a change in heat.

a. Categorize ways to produce heat energy such as burning, rubbing (friction), and mixing one thing with another. b. Investigate how insulation affects heating and cooling. c. Investigate the transfer of heat energy from the sun to various materials. d. Use thermometers to measure the changes in temperatures of water samples (hot, warm, and cold,) over time. Magnets Standards: S3P2. Students will investigate magnets and how they affect other magnets and common objects. a. Investigate to find common objects that are attracted to magnets. b. Investigate how magnets attract and repel each other. Pollution and Conservation Standards: S3L2. Students will recognize the effects of pollution and humans on the environment. a. Explain the effects of pollution (such as littering) to the habitats of plants and animals. b. Identify ways to protect the environment. Conservation of resources Recycling of materials

Some of the activities that the teachers do for heat are to practice reading thermometers using Celsius and Fahrenheit scales. Once this is done, the students will use thermometers to measure the change in temperature over time. Students will also use various materials to determine which ones are good conductors and which ones are good insulators. The students will use their hands and other materials to produce friction. For magnets, the students will experiment with magnets to determine which poles attract and which poles repel. They will also use wire, a nail, batteries, and a light bulb to create an electromagnet. During the pollution and conservation unit, students identify pollution and ways they can help eradicate pollution. They also develop ways that they can conserve resources. Overall, there is an emphasis on the learner becoming an agent of change for the environment. All units are assessed using the end of unit test and a performance assessment. However, we typically modify the performance assessments to meet the needs of our students.

Collection Evaluation I visited our media center to determine what materials we already have to support student learning for heat, magnets, and pollution/conservation. The keywords I used when searching were magnets, magnetism, heat, insulator, conductor, pollution, and conservation. Our library has significantly more books on pollution and conservation than on heat and magnets. The media center also has Bill Nye DVDs on heat and magnetism. Both movies are for grades four and up, so the content may be too advanced for some third graders. The copyright date of both movies is 2005. We also have three movies on pollution and conservation: Creature Rescue and Gatorglades, Pollution Solutions, and Water, Pollution, and Solutions. At first glance, I thought that our collection on heat, magnets, pollution, and conservation is pretty good. However, once I used four evaluation techniques to look at them more critically, I found our collection lacking. The first technique I used in evaluation of the collection was to look at the publication dates of the materials. Many of our books on these subjects were published before 2000. The charts below break down the publication dates of the materials in our media center. The second technique I used to evaluate the collection was to examine the condition of the materials. Overall, the materials are in excellent condition. In fact, some of the books look brand new. It made me wonder if some of the books have ever been checked out by students. In looking at the check-out cards at the back of the book, it became apparent that most of the books have only been checked out a few times. I found three books that have never been checked out by students and one book that was only checked out once in October of 2001. If kids arent checking out the books, it defeats the purpose of having them. I will look for more engaging books for the students. A third evaluation criterion I used is the reading levels of the books. I found that only about 25% of the books are at an appropriate level for third graders. About 50% of the books are at a level below third grade. The final 25% of the books are above level for third graders. While its good to have books above and below grade level for your below level and above level students, there are simply not enough on level books in our collection. My search will also focus on finding on level books. The fourth evaluation technique I used is how well the materials addressed the standards. For the most part, the magnets books address the standards. The lower level books leave some things out, but all of the standards are addressed somewhere in the collection. However, the books on heat are seriously lacking. A majority of the books only address the difference between hot and cold. None of the books have content on friction, insulators, or conductors which are central concepts in the unit on heat. The books on pollution and conservation are more comprehensive, but we need more books that empower students to create change rather than just give them information.

Although not one of my criterion, it is also clear that multi-cultural resources are needed in this part of our collection. We have a large ESOL population in our school, so I definitely see a need for more bilingual books on heat, magnetism, pollution, and conservation. I am also concerned that we have very few fiction books on these topics. Also, we lack non-book materials beyond the five videos we have. I used these areas of need to guide my search for materials for my order. Materials Order and Budge Summary The link to the wiki with web resources is: http://cedp.wikispaces.com/.
