Introducing the EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON plug-in
This chapter provides an overview of the EMC Symmetrix VMAX/ CLARiiON plug-in and the requirements for supporting it within Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer.

Overview System requirements

11

Overview
The EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON plug-in enables the discovery and monitoring of additional, in-depth performance metrics for EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON nodes, using IT Operations Analyzer. IT Operations Analyzer provides a unified, web-based interface that can display a number of status fields for nodes and their components.

System requirements
The following sections identify the system requirements for the IT Operations Analyzer management server and EMC Symmetrix VMAX/ CLARiiON nodes.

Management server requirements

The management server is the machine on which IT Operations Analyzer is installed. To support the installation of the EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON plug-in and subsequent monitoring of performance for EMC Symmetrix VMAX or EMC CLARiiON nodes, the management server must be running IT Operations Analyzer version 3.1.0 or later. For information about the management servers operating system, disk space, memory, and processor speed requirements, please refer to Table 2-1 of the Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer Getting Started Guide.

EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON node requirements

EMC Symmetrix VMAX, EMC CLARiiON AX4, and CX4 are supported. In order for the EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON plug-in to monitor indepth performance metrics and collect statistics from the EMC Symmetrix VMAX or EMC CLARiiON node, you must enable Performance Data Logging by using the native EMC tools (for example, NaviCLI or the Navisphere GUI or the EMC SMC or SPA).

Introducing the EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON plug-in EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON Plug-in User Guide

Preparing SMI-S for EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON nodes

For information about preparing SMI-S for EMC Symmetrix VMAX/CLARiiON nodes, please refer to Chapter 5 of the Hitachi IT Operations Analyzer Getting Started Guide: Device Configuration Supplement. NOTE: When the Performance Data Logging service is stopped, the EMC SMI-S provider might not provide the plug-in with its status change (stopped). In that case, the following is reflected in IT Operations Analyzer: The Processor Utilization metric shows 100% All metric monitoring is stopped (no performance graph line displays)

You might need to restart the EMC CIMOM so that the SMI-S provider updates the status of the Performance Data Logging service. In addition, in certain scenarios, some versions of the EMC SMI-S provider have problems with the discovery and monitoring of EMC Symmetrix VMAX/ CLARiiON nodes. It is recommended that you restart the EMC CIMOM whenever discovery or monitoring issues are encountered. For more information, refer to the EMC SMI-S provider's documentation, or contact EMC support.
