Speech Therapy Code of Ethics and Social Work Code of Ethics

NASW and ASHA Code of Ethics


The Social Work code of ethics is called the NASW(National Association of Social Workers), Last revised in 2008. The Speech Therapy code of ethics is called ASHA(American SpeechLanguage-Hearing Association), Last revised in 2010.

The next few slides will compare the similarities between a few codes within both of the professions codes of ethics, I did not find any contrasting ethical principles or values between the two professions.

Code of ethics-Discrimination
NASW CODE OF ETHICS: DISCRIMINATION FROM CODE ASHA CODE OF ETHICS: DISCRIMINATION FROM # 4.02 PRINCIPLE OF ETHICS I, RULE C. (4.02) Social workers should not practice, condone, facilitate, or collaborate with any form of discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, or mental or physical disability. (NASW, 2008). (C.) Individuals shall not discriminate in the delivery of professional services or the conduct of research and scholarly activities on the basis of race or ethnicity, gender, gender identity/gender expression, age, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, or disability. (ASHA,2010).

Code of Ethics-Privacy and Confidentiality

(l) Social workers should protect the confidentiality of clients written and electronic records and other sensitive information. Social workers should take reasonable steps to ensure that clients records are stored in a secure location and that clients records are not available to others who are not authorized to have access. (NASW, 2008).

(M). Individuals shall adequately maintain and appropriately secure records of professional services rendered, research and scholarly activities conducted, and products dispensed, and they shall allow access to these records only when authorized or when required by law.(ASHA, 2010).

Code of Ethics- Payment for Services


NASW CODE OF ETHICS- CODE # 1.13 ASHA CODE OF ETHICS- RULE OF ETHICS 4 E. Individuals shall not defraud or engage in any scheme to defraud in connection with obtaining payment, reimbursement, or grants for services rendered, research conducted, or products dispensed.(ASHA, 2010). (b) Social workers should avoid accepting goods or services from clients as payment for professional services. Bartering arrangements, particularly involving services, create the potential for conflicts of interest, exploitation, and inappropriate boundaries in social workers relationships with clients(NASW, 2008).

Code of Ethics- Sexual Relationships

(a) Social workers who function as supervisors or educators should not engage in sexual activities or contact with supervisees, students, trainees, or other colleagues over whom they exercise professional authority(NASW, 2008).

F. Individuals shall not engage in sexual activities with clients, students, or research participants over whom they exercise professional authority or power.(ASHA, 2010).
