ANSWER KEY
QUESTION 1 The idea I got from the novel "Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is that man should not mess with nature. Dr Jekyll went against nature by drinking a potion that would bring out his evil side, Mr. Hyde. Hyde went onto do the most evil and cruel things. At the end of the story, Dr Jekyll realised his mistake but it was too late. Mr Hyde was much stronger and took over his body. QUESTION 2 The novel I have chosen is The Phantom of the Opera, by Gaston Leroux. One of the main themes of this novel is the power of love. Erik is the Phantom in the opera house and is secretly in love with Christine, a rising star. Because of his love for her, he teaches her to sing and makes her a star. HE spends all his time and effort to make her famous. However he does all this because of his love for her. Christine, on the other hand is in love with Raoul, a nobleman. Erik tries his best to win Christine's heart and even kidnaps Raoul am the director, a Persian, in an attempt to force Christine to love him. He threatens to kill them both if Christine does not marry him. However, when Christine kisses him gently, he changes his mind and lets them go. The power of love is very strong in this novel and even a wicked man like the Phantom can change because of it. In the end, one feels sympathy towards him because of his great love for Christine. QUESTION 3 The Phantom of the Opera In The Phantom of the Opera', Erik shows the evil side of human nature. He may be a musical genius and a talented builder but he is ruthless because he will not hesitate to kill or sabotage whoever stands in his way. He disrupts the opera, he kills, he spreads fear whenever he is unhappy. No one can stand in the way of his obsession with Christine Daae, whom he takes under his wings. He has a house beneath the Opera House and a torture room full of mirrors. He leads a ghost-like life and causes fear and havoc in the Opera House. It is only when he gives up his love for Christine and returns her to her true love, that we feel some pity for him. His bitterness over being born ugly has brought out the evil in him. Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde In 'Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' we see the evil side of human nature in Dr. Jekyll's mad experimentations. He experiments with a drug that changes him into a monster-like alter ego, Mr Hyde who tramples mercilessly on a young girl and kills an old gentleman. When he is not Mr Hyde, he is the respected and eminent scientist, Dr. Jekyll. Finally, when he loses control over his evil side, he has to kill himself to kill his nature
