Besides television, there is a place that is devoted to provide the spectacle
movies that can be enjoyed by enthusiasts. The place is called cinema. There are
many people who visit there with a justifiable reason is to watch the newest movies.
Indonesia as one of the developing countries also do not want to be lose in
competition with other countries in making the best Indonesian movies. But, until

CHAPTER II
LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Development of Indonesian movies

On December 5, 1900, cinema system practiced in the colonial Dutch East
Indies. In 1926, the first film produced in Indonesia, Loetoeng Kasaroeng.
Furthermore, the Indonesian movie star couple's first, Roekiah-Raden Mochtar role in
the film by Albert Balink Boelan entitled Cahaya in 1938.
After a period of Indonesian independence, on March 31, 1950, Usmar Ismail
founded Perfini (Indonesian National Film Company.) Film Darah dan Doa was
produced, the first shooting took place on March 30, which was then designated as the
National Film and New Day are recognized government, the post-reform period in
1999.
Indonesian Film Festival event for the first time, held on March 20 to April 5,
1955, Lewat Djam Malam into FFI best film at the time. Festival Film Indonesia
(FFI) had experienced ups and downs for several times. Stuck in a long time, until
1973, FFI was held again, and then survive long enough, to stagnate again after 1992.
This is caused, because too many regulations and government policies on
social and cultural control in particular, the film industry were implemented. Until
finally, fetter the development of film industry in the homeland, and the lack of clarity
in the Indonesian film investment scheme, not only making Indonesia stagnant film
production.
2.2 Indonesian movies today
It all began in 1998, when the movie Kuldesak, omnibus project Riri Riza,
Rizal Mantovani, Mira Lesmana and Nan T. Achnas completed construction and
received a warm welcome from young people who thirst for a local show at various
theaters network homeland, near the end of 1999.
In early 2000, the enlightenment was started in the film industry in Indonesia,
with the number of spectators who crept up sharply for the films, such as:
Petualangan Sherina, Jelangkung, dan Ada Apa Dengan Cinta. Then, begin
production of Indonesian films, rolling from the work of young filmmakers beings
Indonesia.

Seeing the rapid development, then in 2004, FFI is held again with a big
mission. However, implementation has been a lot of holes here and there. In
December 2006, the organization of FFI and the movie selection criteria, it is
increasingly unclear and deteriorate.
The peak, on 3 January 2007, active filmmakers who make movies in the era
of post-Reformation Order trophies restore images that have been obtained since 2004
and demanded the government to immediately fix the national film policy {See article
Kabar Indonesia, January 22, 2007 edition of Protest titled Festival Film Indonesia
(FFI) 2006}.The filmmakers of this movie, then join an organization they formed,
Indonesian Film Society (MFI), as a venue and forum to voice their aspirations to the
government, for more attention to the fate of the national film industry is quite
alarming.

pornography that always causes controversy. However many Indonesian movies that
provide positive benefits and good moral messages memorable too.
4.2 Aprecciation for Indonesian movies
Although many prefer to choose foreign movies than Indonesian movies, but
Indonesian people still like the movies the work of nation's children. And one of
Indonesian movie is well-liked by them are Laskar Pelangi. The reason they loved
the film is this movie tells the story of the spirit for having knowledge of limitations,
therefore Laskar Pelangi is providing a very good moral message. In addition,
Indonesia's remarkable movie they are Ayat-Ayat Cinta, Ketika Cinta Bertasbih,
Petualangan Sherina, Kuntilanak, etc..
After watching the movies in Indonesia, they get the advantages and the
disadvantages. The advantage are they can be motivated to live, get a good moral
message and take care of the environment. There are also several Indonesian movies
that gives a loss, like any act of violence, sexual or otherwise to be emulated by the
public.
From the discussion above, many people's expectation towards the future
development of Indonesian movies. Namely the quality of Indonesian movies are
better than today, providing a memorable spectacle and a lot of good give benefits for
all people, not imitate foreign movies and more creative in Indonesia on the movie.
