2013 Season Preview

A talented Kansas tennis team looks to return to contention in the Big 12 this spring, combining youth and experience to build upon a 2012 season plagued by growing pains.
The Jayhawks enter the 2013 dual season with the right balance of experience and raw talent to improve upon their 9-13 dual record in 2012. Kansas doesnt lose a single player from last years dual lineup, which gives head coach Amy Hall-Holt an opportunity to start strong for the second year in a row. Monica Pezzotti, Dylan Windom, Maria Belen Luduena, Claire Dreyer, Paulina Los and Victoria Khanevskaya were all a part of last seasons stellar beginnings -their 7-0 start to dual play was the programs best in two decades. It may all start with the teams plethora juniors and seniors. If they remain doubles partners, Pezzotti and Windom should look to make a statement as one of the elite doubles duos in the Big 12. A strong ending for those two in 2012 brought a well-deserved No. 25 ITA Division I ranking to start the fall, but dont expect that to intimidate their competition in the talent-stacked Big 12. It would denitely help for Dreyer and Khanevskaya keep up their recent individual success. The two combined for a 20-3 record in singles and a 13-4 mark in doubles play for the fall. Dont forget Luduena, either, who climbed to No. 118 nationally in singles during conference play last year. Even so, last years top six may not have an easy time reclaiming their spots for this years slate. She may only be a freshman, but

Fall 2012 Recap

Several Jayhawks feel good about their individual results from fall tournament play.
Individual play in the fall of 2012 showcased a considerable amount of potential for the Kansas tennis team, especially for the newcomers. Junior Haley Fournier combined with freshmen Maria Jose Cardona and Anastasija Trubica for an impressive 23-8 record in doubles, with Trubica tying partner Claire Dreyer for the teams best individual doubles record. Dreyers 11-1 singles record was also the programs best. Cardona had a particularly strong fall in her rst season in a Kansas uniform. A native of Santiago, Chile, Cardona advanced to the quarternals of the ITA Regional Championships in singles -further than any of her teammates -- and knocked off seasoned opponents from Nebraska, Arkansas and Wichita State. She was also crowned Draw C singles champion in her collegiate debut at the Kansas Invitational, a run that extended to an 8-1 record start the season. Senior Monica Pezzotti and junior Dylan Windom entered the season ranked No. 25 nationally, but injuries and other factors limited the amount of action they saw in the fall. In less than three seasons in the program, Windom has made two trips to the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships in Los Angeles, as well as with a pair of strong showings at the ITA Regional Championships. At 9-2, Pezzottis fellow senior Victoria Khanevskaya also nished the fall with a singles record worth praising. In total, the Jayhawks tallied eight singles and three doubles draw titles in only six tournament appearances during the rst semester.

Senior Monica Pezzotti and junior Dylan Windom entered fall 2012 ranked 25th nationally in doubles. Cardona might be Hall-Holts top player by the time she graduates. As Dreyers partner, Trubica had her fair share of doubles success during the fall, going 11-3 in tournament play. Junior transfer Haley Fournier, Kansas third newcomer, already understands the stiff challenge that Big 12 play brings. As a freshman two years ago, Fournier broke into the dual lineup while playing for Texas Tech, a team that enters 2013 ranked No. 21 in the nation. The schedule doesnt look easy, with seven of KUs nine Big 12 opponents entering 2013 nationally ranked, but these Jayhawks are far from pushovers. Either way they must adapt quickly, thanks in part to two dates with ranked opponents in the rst three weeks of the 2013 season.

Junior Claire Dreyer nished with the teams best overall individual record for both singles and doubles for the fall of 2012. The St. Louis, Mo., native and Dayton transfer should play a signicant role for the Jayhawks once again in 2013.

Head Coach Amy Hall-Holt

Murray State, 1995
One of the longest tenured coaches at Kansas, Amy Hall-Holt recently celebrated her 13th year with the Jayhawk program, and is currently in her eighth season as head coach. Since taking over the head coaching reigns in 2003, Hall-Holt has led the Jayhawks to three seasons with 10 or more wins, a Big 12 nish as high as fth place and an Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking as high as No. 55. In addition, three singles players and three doubles teams have garnered All-Big 12 accolades. Under Hall-Holts guidance, the Jayhawks posted back-to-back 10-win seasons in 2008 and 2009. Kansas nished the 2007-2008 campaign tied for fth in the Big 12, which was the best nish since tying for second in 2001-2002. The No. 55 ranking also came in 2008. The Jayhawks jumped into the rankings for the rst time that season after knocking off No. 67 Kansas State and No. 46 New Mexico March 5, and March 9. The season culminated in a trip to the quarternals of the 2008 Big 12 Conference Championship in College Station, Texas, and a season-ending rank of No. 68. Hall-Holt has helped three doubles teams and three singles players earn an invitation to compete against the college tennis elite in the ITA AllAmerican Championships. From 2006-2007 KU was represented in both the singles and doubles portions of the Los Angeles event. Then-No. 30-ranked Elizaveta Avdeeva and Ksenia Burkina were selected to the main draw in 2006, and No. 115 Bukina was selected to the prequalifying singles draw. The following year, Avdeeva returned, this time ranked No. 36 with partner Edina Horvath, and also played in the prequalifying singles draw. Ekaterina Morozova and Erin Wilbert were selected to the prequalifying draw of the 2010 All-American Championships. The tandem ventured to the West Coast, unranked and unseeded in their draw, and promptly knocked off the sixth-seeded team of Amanda Craddock and Caroline Larsson of Texas. Morozova also competed in the prequalifying singles draw. Several players have also inked their names in the Kansas Tennis record books while under the tutelage of Hall-Holt. In 2007, Yuliana Svistun put

up 37 singles wins, tying her single-season mark for fth-all time. The mark was the most in a season in 17 years. Svistun also recorded nine Big 12 wins that season, which tied her for second all-time. Avdeeva, Horvath and Emily Haylock also set numerous doubles records. Two Hall-Holt-led doubles teams won the Big 12 in 2006 and in 2009, becoming the rst teams to do so since 1998. Hall-Holts players also excel in the classroom. In 2005, KU tennis set an all-time Kansas Athletics record by posting a 3.49 GPA. With Hall-Holt at the helm, Kansas has been named an ITA All-Academic school four times and has placed 13 athletes on Academic All-Big 12 teams. Two or more players have been named to the Big All-Academic Team in each of Hall-Holts seven seasons as head coach, and at least one player every year has made the rst team. Before taking over as the head coach, Hall-Holt was an assistant at KU from 1997-2003. In her years as an assistant to Roland Thornqvist, Jenny Garrity and Kilmeny Waterman Hall-Holt helped coach the Jayhawks to three second-place Big 12 nishes and four winning seasons, highlighted by an 18-6 1998 campaign. She also helped six players to Big 12 singles titles and two teams to conference doubles titles. The Jayhawks also reached the NCAA Tournament three times during that time span, including a trip to the 1998 NCAA Championship. Prior to joining the Jayhawk staff, Hall-Holt spent two seasons at Eastern Kentucky as an assistant for both the mens and womens programs. At EKU, she was responsible for on-court coaching, organizing travel, scheduling arrangements and coordinating recruiting efforts for the Colonels tennis teams. She also controlled the off-season conditioning programs. Before taking on coaching duties at Eastern Kentucky, Hall-Holt worked as a student assistant to the athletics director. She graduated from Murray State in 1995 with a degree in health education and physical education. A member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and the United States Tennis Association, Hall-Holt earned a masters degree in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky in 1996. Hall-Holt comes from an athletic family, as her father played basketball at the University of Kentucky under former head coach, and former Jayhawk, Adolph Rupp. She was married in Kentucky to her husband Rance Holt, a Free State High School football coach, July 10, 2004. The two welcomed son Layton in July of 2008.

He was a member of UWFs back-toback NCAA Division II National Championship teams in 2004 and 2005, as well as the 2005 Gulf South Conference Championship team and 2004 Gulf South runner-up squad. 2012 In Review

Spring 2012 Recap

Kansas cruised to a historic 7-0 start to dual play in 2012, but key preseason losses eventually wore the Jayhawks down against their powerful Big 12 foes.
The events that ultimately dened Kansas tennis in 2012 may have actually come before dual play even started. Over the winter, the Jayhawks learned that an undisclosed medical situation would keep their best playersenior Ekaterina Morozovafrom from nishing her dual season in Lawrence. The Russian standout was a top100 player nationally in both singles and doubles. Since promising freshman Karen Hernandez would no longer be a part of the team either, several Jayhawks had to step up if they wanted to overcome such crucial preseason losses. And did they ever in the opening two months of the season. To begin Amy Hall-Holts eighth season as head coach, Kansas reeled off seven consecutive team wins in non-conference play, marking the programs best start in dual play since 1992. The Jayhawks hadnt seemed to miss a beat from a solid fall of individual play, getting a boost from freshman Chilean newcomer Maria Belen Luduea. Luduea seemed to have no issues adjusting, earning a No. 118 singles ranking in the opening months of her college career. Its very encouraging and very exciting to see that somebody, after only having been here for two-and-a-half months, is already ranked, Hall-Holt said. The schedule wasnt so kind after the beginning of March, however. Out of the nal 14 teams on the KU would face, 10 were listed in the top 75 of the ITAs Division I rankings.

Volunteer Asst. Boomer Saia (left) talks with senior Victoria Khanevskaya between games.

Eight of the Jayhawks nine Big 12 opponents fell into that category, including four schools that broke the top 20 in 2012. Its so much different because our conference is pretty tough, Monica Pezzotti said. All the teams had been ranked except for us and Iowa State, so its a really hard challenge for us to do well. That difficulty showed in Kansas nal record of 9-13 (0-9 Big 12), but tight battles with the some of the nations elite showed that KU was on the cusp of success. On March 24, the Jayhawks gave No. 13 Baylor a memorable scare, despite falling to the star-studded Bears, 4-3, at Jayhawk Tennis Center. Any loss is tough regardless of who it is, Hall-Holt said. We want to beat everybody possible, and thats the way we go in.

Several Jayhawks were able to perform well late in the season and have something to build upon for 2013. With no seniors on the active roster, everyone who saw action in the spring of 2012 would return. Perhaps the biggest storyline to end the year was the doubles tandem of Dylan Windom and Monica Pezzotti. The duo started the fall as the No. 25-ranked doubles team in the nation after winning three of their last ve matches in conference play. That run included an 8-2 victory over No. 34 Lina Padegimaite and Noel Scott of No. 13 Texas on March 30. Its exciting for us that were a young team because we have so much talent, Dreyer said. Everyone is just excited to come back next year and keep going at it.

The Jayhawk Tennnis Center serves as the indoor and outdoor home tennis facility of the Kansas Jayhawks. Even more, it is a full-service facility with a long slate of programming for all ages. Kansas Athletics involvement with the Jayhawk Tennis Center, formerly known as First Serve, dates back to 2006 when the department negotiated an agreement to use the indoor facility to host its womens teams regular season matches. The athletic department purchased the facility outright

on Feb. 1, 2010, and in addition to managing the the center full-time, began several improvement projects. The current facility consists of four indoor courts, six outdoor courts, room for spectator viewing, workout facilities and a locker room for the KU tennis team. Services provided at the Jayhawk Tennis Center include private and group lessons, QuickStart junior tennis program, USTA sanctioned tournaments and leagues, non-sanctioned tournaments and leagues, interclub matches and social events.

Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger

Dr. Sheahon Zenger is a coach at heart. But when KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little introduced the Hays, Kan., native as KUs Athletics Director January 3, 2011, he promised not to call any plays for the coaches. That doesnt mean, though, that he wont be right there with them - and their student-athletes - every step of the way. For its his genuine care for coaches and student-athletes that has stamped his career in intercollegiate athletics. Zenger comes to KU after serving for ve years as athletics director at Illinois State University, helping steer ISU Athletics to a place of prominence in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Redbirds won a conference-leading seven league titles during the 2009-10 season and captured their second Valley All-Sports Trophy in three years. ISUs Weisbecker Scholarship Fund membership grew 65 percent during his tenure, and capital projects boomed. The Illinois State Baseball Stadium at Duffy Bass Field was officially dedicated in May 2009 to culminate the completion of that $3.5 million project. In addition, funding for the Redbird Arena locker room improvements has also been secured. With experience as an educator, coach, fundraiser and administrator, Zenger brought a plan to Illinois State, and with the help of the head coaches and administrative staff, personalized that strategic plan for Redbird Athletics. As a result, the athletics department saw record-high grade-point averages (GPA) in each of the last four years, including a bestever department-wide 3.13 GPA in fall 2009. Redbird student-athletes now regularly carry a GPA of 3.0 or better. ISU student-athletes have also contributed more than 2,000 hours of community service in each of the last ve years, including 3,500 hours during the 2009-10 athletic season. In addition to Valley All-Sports titles in 2008 and 2010, in his last three years at ISU Zenger led the department to 16 top-ve nishes in its 17 Valley sports - the highest percentage of top-ve nishers in league history. Zenger secured a ve-year apparel contract for Redbird Athletics, and signicantly increased the marketing of the program in the Central Illinois region, most notably with a campaign centered on the awardwinning marketing campaign Spread the Red. He also witnessed record-setting attendance gures in football, mens basketball and womens basketball, while seeing 17 Redbird teams advance to postseason play. At the beginning, Zenger wasnt headed toward a career in administration. He was nine years old when he told his father he wanted to be a coach, and it didnt take long for that dream to materialize. After playing football at Fort Hays State and Mid-American Nazarene College, he nished his undergraduate degree at Kansas State. Even before he received his bachelors degree in English and secondary education in 1988, Zenger was assisting the football coaches at Manhattan (Kan.) High School. His rst college football coaching job came at Drake University right after graduation. In 1989, at age 23, Zenger joined Bill Snyders staff at Kansas State as one of the nations youngest fulltime football staff members; he served in key roles as assistant recruiting coordinator and director of football operations. Zenger completed his masters degree in journalism and mass communication in 1992 while helping Snyder bring Wildcat football to unprecedented success.

It became evident, though, that more than coaching was in store for Zenger. He sought advice from thenKU Chancellor Gene Budig, who convinced him to pursue a Ph.D. at KU. As he completed his Ph.D. in educational policy and leadership (1996), Zenger contributed communications and special projects support to the office of the executive vice-chancellor, Ed Meyen, and wrote the professional life history of then-chancellor Del Shankel, while strengthening his understanding of university leadership at the highest levels. While focusing his attention on academics, he managed to stay involved in the world of intercollegiate athletics, and specically football. Involved may be an understatement. In 1993 Zenger and a friend founded American Football Quarterly, a magazine for coaches. Zenger served as publisher - and then editor - until 1995, when he sold his share of the by-thenthriving magazine. Still, coaching stayed in his blood. After earning his doctorate, Zenger in 1996 signed on as the recruiting coordinator for the brand-new NCAA Division I football program at the University of South Florida. A year later he joined the University of Wyoming football staff as recruiting coordinator and within two years rose to assistant head coach, a position he still considers one of the crowning achievements of his career. Zenger stayed at Wyoming

through the 2000 season before returning to Kansas State. He spent a year in the KSU College of Business, raising more than $2 million and restructuring its development program with research and planning. He rejoined KSU Athletics in 2001 as assistant athletics director for major gifts, helping KSU initiate important development strategies. In 2002 he was appointed KSUs associate athletics director for development, a position he held until 2005, when he was named Athletics Director at Illinois State. A published author and researcher, Zenger served for three years on the NCAA Division I Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement. He also served on two NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Division committees, and was a member of the Executive Committee of NACDAs Division I FCS Athletic Directors Association. He is also a member of many professional and university organizations, including the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), the Association for the Study of Higher Education and the American Football Coaches Association. Zenger is married to the former Pam McAnarney. The couple has three children: Luke (14), Abby (12) and Jake (10).

The University of Kansas

Kansas Traditions
Campanile Hill Campanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the Hill is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus. The Rock Chalk Chant The Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club. Before the University adopted the cheer in 1897, it consisted of Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU being repeated three times. An English professor soon suggested that Rock Chalk be substituted for Rah, Rah because it rhymed with Jayhawk. Rock Chalk was also symbolic of the chalky limestone formations found on Mount Oread. Teddy Roosevelt once said the Rock Chalk Chant was the best he had ever heard. The Nickname During the Civil War a regiment raised by Kansas Governor Charles Robinson called itself the Independent Mounted Jayhawks (later officially the First Kansas Calvary and then the Seventh Kansas Regiment). By the end of the Civil War the word Jayhawk was associated with the spirit of camaraderie and the courageous ghting qualities that characterized efforts to keep Kansas a free state. By 1886, the University of Kansas had adopted the mythical bird as part of the KU yell. When the football team rst took the eld in 1890, it seemed only natural that they should be called Jayhawkers. Few colleges and universities have such a meaningful symbol, one so deeply associated with the struggles of the people who founded them. The Alma Mater In 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song Far Above Cayugas Waters. Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but Crimson and the Blue still goes on. The music is not Cornells but an old English folk tune, Annie Lisle. The School Colors The University of Kansas colors, crimson and blue, used since the early 1890s, are not the colors originally adopted by the university Board of Regents in the 1860s. The Regents had decided to adopt the Michigan colors, maize and sky blue. However, when football came upon the scene in 1890, the student backers wanted to use Harvard crimson as the athletic color in honor of Col. John J. McCook, a Harvard man, who had given money for an athletic eld at KU. That eld ran east and west in the proximity of where the north bowl of Memorial Stadium stands on the Kansas campus today. Some Yale men were on the faculty, and they demanded the Yale blue be included. The rooters rallied forth to allow crimson and blue on their team. No one fought to retain the original colors, and the vivid deeper tone crimson and blue became generally used. Finally, in May 1896, the KU Athletic Board adopted crimson and blue as the official team colors for the university. Waving The Wheat Since the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to wave the wheat following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans wave the wheat when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat eld. The Fight Song George Dumpy Bowles, a student with the class of 1912, longed to make a great contribution to the KU spirit, but wasnt athletic enough to do historic deeds on the athletic eld. He turned to music and produced some outstanding student musical shows. A song in one of these shows was Im a Jayhawk. Written in 1912, it was dormant until 1920 when a growth in school spirit brought out Im a Jayhawk once more. The song contributed to the raising of funds to build both the KU football stadium and student union as World War I memorials. The 1926 glee club made it known nationally.
