The malletKAT has been serving percussionists since 1985! The instrument is designed
to give you the standard tools of expression such as dampening, dead stroking,
sustain control and more to make your MIDI Vibes or MIDI Marimba experience seem
natural and intuitive. But there are vasts amount of new colors and gestures
implemented on the malletKAT to allow you to bend pitches, control vibrato, play
multiple sounds simultaneously and much much more. When you transfer your
marimba or vibe technique onto the malletKAT, you will discover new forms of
expression that you never thought possible. Please "TAKE THE MALLETKAT TOUR" to

The malletKAT 7KS is a powerful MIDI controller that is designed to capture your
playing gestures and performance. It transforms your performance into musical notes
(MIDI data), noticing the details of dynamics, pressure, speed, dampening, pitch
bend, vibrato, etc., creating an incredible musical representation of your playing. It
is this attention to nuance and detail, combined with the marvel of FSR* sensing
technology, that makes this instrument so enjoyable to play.
MALLET
It is by far the most powerful percussion controller ever created. It is this attention
to nuance and detail, combined with the marvel of FSR* sensing technology, that
makes this instrument so enjoyable to play. It is by far the most powerful percussion
controller ever created.
The new malletKAT 7KS now comes with its own built in sound engine designed by
Kurzweil Music Systems. This is the world's only hardware sound module that has 15
different vibraphones and 15 different marimbas to choose from. There are also over
1000 different instrument sounds available as well as around 256 drum sets and
percussion. More about the sounds later.
The new malletKAT 7KS also has a new feel. Introducing nuBOUNCE playing surface
which is is by far the best most responsive playing surface ever. After testing
hundreds of different surfaces, nuBOUNCE unanimously was decidedly the best pads
to play on. Far better than dampened non-pitched wood and much more responsive
than our own older AcoustaFeel pads.
We also made our instrument water resistant. This is vital for musicians playing
outdoors on the field. We also have an optional power dot covering for the pads
that's perfect for pit playing because the material is white, making the bars quite
visible in the dark.
What is FSR and why do I need it?
FSR stands for Force Sensing Resistor. It
is the magic inside the malletKAT that
makes it so sensitive. Unlike standard
piezo sensors that respond to vibration
and are susceptible to crosstalk and un-
even response, FSR responds only to
pressure. This technology offers supe-
rior tracking across the entire dynamic
spectrum.
Because FSR responds to pressure and
not vibration, the malletKAT is capable
of sensing dampening strokes, dead
strokes and even sustain on any pad.
The malletKAT is the only mallet control-
ler in the world that has the ability to
recognise these gestures. It what sepa-
rates musical toys from real expressive
musical instruments.
The Controller
The malletKAT is really several instru-
ments in one. It is broken down into two
basic keyboards, called Controller One
and Controller Two. Each of these Con-
trollers are independent from each
other. They can have their own sounds,
dynamic response, keyboard and octave
range, etc. These sounds can be acti-
vated by stepping on a footswitch. They
can be layered so that both play at the
same time or they can be split or over-
lapped so that both sounds are active at
the same time.
The malletKAT also has a third layer
called a Reassignment Layer. Every note
on this layer can be programmed by the
User to play any note on any octave on
any of the 16 MIDI channels simultane-
ously. MIDI notes do not have to be con-
tiguous. This means that you can set up
special arrangements of non-pitched
sounds on any pad, or you can set up
your own scales etc. This Reassignment
Layer can be used in combination with
the other Controllers or it can replace
them. There are 14 programmable Reas-
signments stored in memory that can be
assigned to any of the 128 User Kits.
The malletKAT can also be used as an al-
ternate MIDI controller that is designed
to control notes instead of playing
them. The "black" keys can be assigned
to Continuous Controller Numbers while
the "white" keys send discreet values to
these controllers.
The malletKAT can use dynamics and
note position to create X,Y sensing so
that multiple parameters can be con-
trolled by how hard you are playing and
where you are playing on the keyboard
at the same time. There are special
latch functions that can toggle notes on
and off at will. Pads can be assigned to
send out program changes instead of
notes. Combining these features in a
User Setup is a powerful way to control
programs for MIDI Light Control or Loop
Sequencers such as Ableton's LIVE or
Spectrasonics STYLUS RMX.
The malletKAT has 2 Foot Controller In-
puts and three momentary inputs. All of
these inputs are user programmable, of-
fering tremendous power to the per-
former. In any particular performance,
you can add subtle vibrato, pitch bend,
sustain and gate time variances, blend-
ing of sounds, filter control, etc. just by
using these input controls while playing
on the pads. It is possible to suddenly
shift octaves, change sounds, sustain
chords, etc. while the "main" sound is ac-
tive on the keyboard.
malletKAT's are expandable. The two oc-
tave malletKAT Express can be expanded
up to 4 octaves. The three octave mallet-
KAT Pro can be expanded up to 5 oc-
taves. The 4 octave malletKAT Grand
can be expanded to 5 octaves as well.
These Expanders can come on and off de-
pending on the need using easy to install
strapping bars.
You will notice that there are no buttons
on the malletKAT for editing. We have
created an interface that allows for to-
tal programming without having to put
down your mallets. Notice the words un-
derneath the "white" keys. When step-
ping on the Edit footswitch these pads
turn into editing functions. This allows
for instantaneous adjustments in playing
such as octave range, gate time, veloc-
ity range, program change, volume
change, etc. This is an incredibly easy in-
terface that allows you to quickly
change parameters to your hearts con-
tent, even while you are playing live.
Sound Setups
The malletKAT has 128 Factory Setups,
128 User Setups and 16 Chain Setups.
Each Setup is a complete assignment of
the sounds and functions.
The Factory Setups are pre-programmed
for General MIDI. That means that if you
have a sound source that responds to
General MIDI (it should have a GM MIDI
logo displayed on it), the malletKAT is
ready to go without any programming in-
volved. The instrument name that you
see on the display is the sound that you
will hear on your synth.
Don't let our software scare you. Our
128 FACTORY KITS are preset for any GM
(General MIDI) Sound Module. If you see
the "GM" symbol on the synth or use a
malletKAT WS, the sound module will
work 100% right out of box.
User Setups for the KS with Built in
Sounds
The malletKAT 7KS has a new sound en-
gine from Kurzweil Music Systems that
has been modified especially for the mal-
letKAT and trapKAT. We picked our favor-
ite 128 sounds and programmed them
into the USER Kits. That means that you
do not have to know about the innards
of malletKAT programming in order to en-
joy playing. Just scroll through the kits
and play. All of the work has been done
for you.
In these 128 User Kits, we loaded in the
vibraphone and marimba sounds as well
as the orchestral timpani, bells, chimes,
xylophone, orchestral percussion, ethnic
percussion drum sets as well as key-
boards, basses, orchestral instruments,
vocals, synth sounds and more. These
sounds will keep you busy for quite some
time. But if you want hear more, you
can go through the instrument list of
over 1000 sounds and create your own
User Setups.

User Setups (or Kits) also allow you have
control over customizing your sounds.
You can name your own User Kits, store
bank and program change information,
create your own MIDI mixer with stored
volume change commands. Every User
Kit has its own velocity response set-
tings, gate time settings, octave range
etc.
The malletKAT is compatible with any
MIDI sound module as well as using the
instrument as a controller to VST plugins
you might have on your computer.
Chain Setups allow for non contiguous ar-
rangements of your Setups (a sequential
"chain" of Kits). This is an extremely use-
ful feature for setting up quick sound
changes in a performance situation.
These changes can be accessed by step-
ping on a footswitch or by hitting the
backward/forward function pads. There
are 16 Chains in the malletKAT. Each
Chain can have 16 User Setups.
Basic Features
We are sure by now, that as you read
this introduction, you realize the incredi-
ble power that lies within the mallet-
KAT! The real power, however, is not
just in the "bells and whistles". It's the
creative software in the malletKAT that
gives you the capability for real expres-
sion and musicality. Here are just a few
of these powerful features.
Individual Pad Training
Everyone plays differently. The mallet-
KAT has a feature that "learns" your play-
ing style. When you train it, the mallet-
KAT converts your softest and hardest
hits from 256 possible levels into the
128 velocity dynamics that's offered in
MIDI. This gives the instrument the wid-
est dynamic range possible.
Dynamic Articulations
Every Kit stores a set of minimum and
maximum velocity ranges along with ve-
locity curves to get the instrument dy-
namics tailored to personal taste. Dy-
namics can be used to change a sound at
a particular velocity point. Besides set-
ting any "gate" length of a sound, dynam-
ics can also control how long a sound
speaks. These "gate time settings" can
also be controlled by a foot or breath
controller. The malletKAT can detect
"rolls" and instructs the software to let
the notes ring so they don't have the ma-
chine gun effect heard on other devices.
This is extremely useful when playing
timpani or cymbal swells.
Acoustic Emulations
The malletKAT can recognize "dampen"
strokes, a common vibraphone tech-
nique and now "dead" strokes, a com-
mon marimba style of articulation. Like
Individual Pad Training, dampening and
dead stroke articulations can be tailored
to respond to your personal style of play-
ing.
Mono Modes
Special Mono Modes have been devel-
oped to allow you to play solo instru-
ments such as flutes or lead lines with-
out the "bleeding" of sounds heard when
using a sustain pedal on a synth. In-
stead, the sustain pedal in this mode cre-
ates a legato single line passage. It is
now possible to create staccato / legato
articulations effortlessly. Auto Gate func-
tions also help control the "bleeding" of
sounds when playing fast passages.
Why You Need A malletKat....
Sensitivity
Our newest generation of FSR* sensors
combined with our most powerful soft-
ware to date makes the malletKAT in-
credibly sensitive and durable. It re-
sponds to every musical gesture.
Feel
New to the malletKAT is our new
nuBOUNCE playing surface. It feels
really natural and comfortable to play
on. These new pads are not spongy, nor
are they dead or hard to the strike. We
believe we have found the perfect touch
and feel for a mallet controller.
Dynamics
The malletKAT "sees" 256 levels of dy-
namics. That's twice the resolution of
MIDI. Now you can train each octave and
individual pads independently to your
own dynamic range. Tailor the malletKAT
to your own personal playing style.
Expression
Judge the quality of an instrument by
how expressive and responsive it is. No
one wants each sound on the instrument
to speak the same length (gate) or vol-
ume (velocity) for every single strike of
the instrument. That would make the in-
strument sound static and boring (every
non KAT drum/mallet controller does
this). We've created new modes that ad-
just the gate by how fast your playing
(Auto Gate Mode). This makes your mu-
sic sound much more musical, prevent-
ing note bleeding overlaps when playing
fast and avoiding aggressive staccato
strokes when wanting to play legato pas-
sages. The malletKAT also has "Roll
Modes". If your playing a timpani roll for
example, you would want the roll to
sound like a roll, not the dreaded "ma-
chine gun" effect. The power of the mal-
letKAT gives you this control. We also
have Velocity Gate control modes that
affect the sound by how hard or soft
your playing in real time. These features
have a dramatic overall effect on the ex-
pressive musicality and potential of this
instrument.
Light Weight
The malletKAT Express weights less than
8 lbs! It is made out of durable alumi-
num. Expanders weight under 4 lbs. The
standard malletKAT is still extremely
light compared to wood, only about 29
pounds.
Expandability
malletKATs range from the 2 Octave mal-
letKAT Express (expandable up to 4 oc-
taves) to the 3 Octave malletKAT Pro
that is expandable to a full FIVE oc-
taves. The malletKAT Grand is 4 octaves
and can be expanded to 5 octaves.
Water Resistant Sensors
We are not suggesting that the instru-
ment is waterproof, but now our sensors
have been modified to handle those
dreaded bouts of drizzle when playing
outdoors. Our display also has a covering
to protect it from the rain. Speaking of
rain, Alternate Mode offers the "KAT-
dome" cover when the going gets tough.
It is a clear plastic cover that com-
pletely covers the pads, but allows you
to continue to play on them. The cover
has no effect on the performance of the
sensors. A must have for the frequent
outdoor player.
Upgradable/ War On Obsolescence
The malletKAT has been growing since
the 1980's from version 1.0 to the cur-
rent 7.x family. Imagine a controller still
going strong after 25 years! The mallet-
KAT continues to grow as new software
ideas are imagined or requested by mal-
letKAT users.
Built In Sounds
Once again, the malletKAT 7KS is avail-
able with a high end professional sound
engine powered by Kurzweil Music Sys-
tems. There are two stereo !" balanced
TRS jacks (or mono summed) for the
audio output as well as two !" line in-
puts. This allows you to plug your CD
player or fellow musicians audio outputs
into the malletKAT. This signal gets sent
to the audio outputs as well as the !"
headphone jack on the front of the mal-
letKAT.
Turn Key Solutions (No Programming
Necessary)
Don't let our software scare you. Our
128 FACTORY KITS are preset for any GM
(General MIDI) Sound Module. If you see
the "GM" symbol on your external synth,
the malletKAT is ready for playing with-
out any programming.
Better yet, if you get a malletKAT 7KS,
the sound module will work 100% right
out of box with the 128 USER KiTs.
Support / Built In The USA
From our online videos, forum and e-
mail, to our new KAT Knowledge Data-
base and phone tech help, no other com-
pany offers our level of comfort and sup-
port. We're proud to offer our USA made
products which are vital for fast turn-
around for upgrades and repairs.
Accessories
We offer stands, mallets, amps, sound
modules, pedals and more; all tested
and approved for malletKAT playing.
Wise Investment
The malletKAT is perhaps the only elec-
tronic instrument that INCREASES in
value over time.
Advanced Features (with Video Demon-
strations)
The malletKAT (Express, Pro, Grand) has
an enormous musical vocabulary. These
features provide the tools necessary for
the color and expression needed for mak-
ing a Controller a REAL musical instru-
ment. Below is a sampling of some func-
tions available on the malletKAT.
Dampening 1
Dampening 2
Dampening 3
Now the mallet player can use their
natural dampening techniques to cause
individual notes to be quieted. This is
like the dampen technique used on a
vibraphone/vibraharp. Dampen Mode
also has a unique function when control-
ling loops.
Dead Stroking
This mallet gesture is now implemented
on the malletKAT. The dead stroke sound
on a malletKAT can be any alternate
sound and can be used for interesting
new effects.
Virtual Pitch & Mod Wheel 1
Virtual Pitch & Mod Wheel 2
Imaging bending notes and adding vi-
brato to any sound without having to
find a pitch wheel. Simply program the
third footswitch to perform this function
on the fly.
Velocity Switching 1
Velocity Switching 2
Now you can automatically switch
sounds depending on how hard you play.
Switch back and forth instantly with pre-
cision and speed.
Hang 1
Hang 2
Hang 3
Hang 4
Hang 5
Hang 6
Hang 7
This feature allows you to accompany
yourself. Use the sustain two footswitch
to play one sound sustained underneath
while you play a different sound on the
main controller.
Layer Mode 1
Layer Mode 2
Layer Mode 3
Layer Mode 4
You can play up to THREE sounds at once
by layering them. Each sound is inde-
pendently assigned its own channel,
gate, etc.
Split Mode 1
Split Mode 2
Split Mode 3
Split Mode 4
Instantly Split or OVERLAP the keyboard
so that you can play different sounds at
once without needing a footswitch to ac-
cess them.
Latch Mode
You can set up individual pads as toggles
for loop control or you can use the
"black" keys as a loop on and the "white"
keys as loop offs. The malletKAT memo-
rizes what notes are on so that one key
can toggle groups of notes on and off.
Mono Mode 1 & Mono Mode 2
This mode is designed for working with
solo lead instruments. The sustain pedal
acts as a legato pedal, giving total con-
trol over staccato/ legato passages. Solo
instruments like a flute only plays one
note at a time. The malletKAT recreates
this allowing for a realistic monophonic
representation of these sounds complete
with overlapping note adjustments for
added expression.
Roll Modes 1
Roll Modes 2
This mode is a necessary feature when
playing drum and timpani rolls. This
helps eliminate the dreaded machine
gun effect when rolling on drum ma-
chines and other sound modules.
Alternate Note
Each stroke on the keyboard alternates
between two sounds. Each sound is to-
tally independent from each other.
Auto Melody/ Chord Mode
Want to accompany yourself? No prob-
lem. In this mode, the malletKAT
"knows" if you are playing a melody line
or a chord. It will switch sounds auto-
matically depending on how you are
playing. There are three variations of
this incredible feature built into our cur-
rent version.
Reassignment Mode 1
Reassignment Mode 2
There are 14 reassignments. You can
layer three sounds per setup, or use the
new reassignments to LATCH certain
pads in combination with your existing
layer. These latch pads can control your
loops with Start/Stop Commands. Reas-
signment mode can also replace your
normal chromatic pad layout to any MIDI
note and channel assignment you desire
per pad. Great for special "percussion
setups". Reassignment 14 is designed to
send out program changes instead of
note numbers. Used to control MIDI light-
ing and other devices that need pro-
gram change commands.
Velocity Gate Control
Automatically control the length of a
sound by how hard or soft you play. Adds
expression and realism to any perform-
ance simply by naturally using your dy-
namics while playing.
Auto Gate
Playing fast runs with the sustain pedal
down can be tricky business when trying
to control note bleed. Auto Gate helps
by making notes shorter when playing
fast. Of course, this feature is program-
mable.
128 Factory Kits / 128 User Kits
The malletKAT has 128 GENERAL MIDI
F a c t o r y S e t u p s t h a t a r e p r e -
programmed as well as 128 User KITS
that are pre-programmed for the built
in KS Sounds. All of the User Kits can be
modified and stored by the User.
Chains
Now you can organize the 128 User Kits
into groups (chains). There are 16
Chains each with 16 Steps. Arrange any
sound next to any sound for instant ac-
cess. A must for live performance!
Kit Naming
You can name your own 128 User Set-
ups, use the General MIDI instrument
names or eliminate all instrument
names completely, allowing more data
to show on the display.
Built In Metronome And Tap Tempo
Assign any MIDI note and channel to the
list of rhythms (sequences) built in. Tap
in your tempo and go. Great for practic-
ing. Many odd time patterns available.
Synth Control
A controller needs to automatically set
up your synths and sound modules, and
nothing does it better than malletKAT.
The malletKAT sends out three bank
change (MSB, LSB), program change,
and volume change commands per kit. It
also sends out "controller values" so you
can preset settings for reverb, chorus,
delay and more, automatically. You can
further adjust these settings via our two
controller pedal inputs and one breath
control input. Velocity ranges, octave
range, gate times, channel assignment,
etc. are also stored in one of the 128
USER Setups. You have the ultimate con-
trol you need to make music. The mal-
letKAT acts as a MIDI Mixer built right
into each setup.
DJ Surface Control (Real Time Control
Mode)
Turn your malletKAT into a virtual sur-
face controller. Control programs like
REASON and LIVE right from the mallet-
KAT. In this mode, the malletKAT's black
keys represent the knobs and buttons on
your synth. The white keys move the
knobs left (low notes) to right (hi
notes). Play rhythms in real time to cre-
ate effects only possible with the mallet-
KAT. Use the malletKAT's other control-
ler (layer) to play live on top of these ef-
fects.
Warp Mode 1
Warp Mode 2
Warp Mode 3
Explore new exciting rhythms with this
built in feature. Call up a pattern, as-
sign the amount of repeats and feed-
back, and start a rhythmic jam. These
MIDI echoes are also transposable. You
can create thousands of rhythmic and
melodic motifs that react and interact
with your playing.
Midi Merging Routing
The malletKAT can function as a MIDI Merger. Incoming MIDI channel information can
be filtered, routed, etc. A real time saver in the studio.
Programmable Footswitches & Controllers
You can assign special functions to the footswitches such as pitch bend, combine sus-
tain functions, even play MIDI notes (up to four) on the footswitch. The two Control-
ler Pedals can send out data on any of the 128 CC numbers. Special functions such as
Blend (**video), Warp, etc. are also featured as well as the option to use these in-
puts as KIT INCREMENT and DECREMENT for fast Setup changes.
Tweakables
Lots of new global "geek" controls like auto train value adjustments, synth fine tun-
ing adj., data stripping, CC# assignments, scan control, MIDI routing, etc.

KAT MARIO DECIUTIIS
GUITAR VIBES
Here is an example of controlling two in-
strument sounds at the same time. The
entire keyboard can play both sounds,
but they are individually accessed by
stepping on one of the foot switches.
Sustain one sustains the vibes. When sus-
tain two foot switch is pressed, the gui-
tar sound comes in. Notice also that the
guitar sound has a velocity switch point
where a harmonic sound is heard. Its
really like trying to control three instru-
ments at once!
ASIAN GROOVE
On the floor is an audio loop device
(Roland RC-50). I step on the record foot
switch and play the flute sound. The
loop device cap- tures the performance
and plays it back. I then step on an over-
dub switch, and the looper records all of
the instruments, layering each sound on
top of each other. These sounds are
from the Kurzweil PC2R and the Yamaha
Motif ES.
GUITAR FLUTE
On controller two the arpeggiator plays
a groove to the notes that I lay down
when stepping on foot switch two. When
I release the foot switch, the malletKAT
switches to the flute sound. Both sounds
are completely independent.
PIANO SOLO
This is the Yamaha Motif ES Sound. I am
able to play five octaves of sound on a 4
octave instrument by using the sustain
two foot switch to lower the keyboard
down an octave.
HOP IT
In this tune, the malletKAT is split. The
bass sound is on the left, and the elec-
tric piano is on the right. The groove is
part of the arpeggiator function on the
Yamaha Motif ES.
DARK GROOVE
Here is another example of the split
mode in conjunction with the arpeggia-
tor. Two sounds are layered on the bot-
tom half of the malletKAT, while the top
is the keyboard sound
FUNKY GROOVES
Here is another example of using the
Looper, laying sound on top of sound
Live.
DRUM SOLO
Using the Looper Device, I first take a
drum solo over the groove. Then I play
more percussion sounds over the drums.

Alternate Mode is proud to announce the release of the new drumKAT Turbo KS; a
new drumKAT with built in sounds. This drum controller features "Sounds powered by
Kurzweil", a world renowned leader in keyboards and synthesizers. The Kurzweil
engine built into the is a newly designed sound engine that features an incredible
drum sound chip as well as the sound set from their new PC3 keyboard.
DRUM
There are over 256 drum sets and percussion setups. The drumKAT Turbo KS now
includes beautiful, natural sounding drum sets as well as highly stylized drum sets
and everything in between. There are also incredible orchestral percussion such as
timpani, xylophone, marimba, bells, vibes, orch perc as well as ethnic percussion
and more.
There are also over 1000 other sounds built into the drumKAT Turbo KS as well. These
instruments are the same sounds that are now built into the malletKAT. It is now
also possible to play MIDI files directly into the drumKAT Turbo KS via its MIDI IN port.
Now the band can really be in the box! If you have a malletKAT, you can plug your in-
strument into the MIDI IN port and both can share the sound module as well.
Hearing Is Believing
The drumKAT Turbo KS has a pair of ste-
reo 1/4" balanced outputs for the audio.
It is possible to use just a single mono ca-
ble as well. The instrument also includes
a pair of 1/4" inputs so that you can
merge audio data to the outputs. This
means that you can plug a CD player or
some other audio source directly into
the drumKAT Turbo KS and have both
sources go the 1/4" headphone jack or
audio outs.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
THE DRUMKAT AND THE TURBO DRUM-
KAT?
Both the drumKAT and the Turbo drum-
KAT share the same housing, sensors,
and trigger inputs. All of the features
that are in the drumKAT are in the Turbo
as well.
Both instruments are designed to offer
optimum playing performance, offering
the widest dynamic range and sensitivity
on any pad surface. Each pad and trig-
ger can be trained to your own play-
ing style. This means that you can tailor
the way the drumKAT and Turbo respond
to your soft and hard hits.
The Turbo however offers additional
functions that set this instrument apart
from any other controller in the world.
It should be noted that if you are look-
ing to trigger mostly drum sounds, the
drumKAT 3.8 might be right for you.

The basic modes of the drumKAT are
Alt8, MultiMode, VelShift, Nteshift, Con-
trol Mode and Simple. This means that
you can play simple chords, alternate
patterns, vel oci ty shi ft through
notes, and play single notes per pad.
If you are looking for an alternate me-
lodic controller and want Total control,
think Turbo.
Heres a short list of Turbo Features
128 Alternating Notes per pad
Ability to Link up to 3 pads together on
a single hit
Control Paths-the ability to send dis-
creet controller number values per hit
on pads
16 MSB/LSB program change commands
per kit
Expanded Motif Generator with the abil-
ity to have motifs transposed
Directional control of Transpositions
Dynamically Allocated Memory allows
for more than 30 kits (up to 48)
Expanded CNTRL pad functions (tempo
value, program change, etc as pad hits)
Drummers that want to play drum
sounds, but also want to be able to con-
trol synth functions like res filters, lfo,
pitch bend, etc all in real time without
having to touch the synth, should con-
sider the Turbo. Each pad can be pro-
grammed to control a different CC# in
different ways depending on the differ-
ent modes available on the Turbo.
WHAT ABOUT THE DRUMKAT AND THE
DK10?
Again, both instruments share the same
frame, and sensors. The dk10 has a wide
dynamic range like the drumKAT, but you
can not train and tailor the dynamic re-
sponse to your own personal taste.
There are four GLOBAL settings that set
the dynamic response of the dk10.
There are two inputs on the dk10 for Hi-
Hat and bass drum trigger pedals. The
drumKAT has 9 trigger inputs plus hihat
controller input. There are 6 factory kit
configurations and 4 User Kits where you
can save your pad setups. Also note that
there is no display on the dk10.
With the dk10, each pad can send its
own midi channel and note number set-
ting, one note per pad. If you are using
a controller HiHat pedal like the HatPe-
dal, the dk10 will automatically send
out controller numbers 1 and 4 on chan-
nel 10. (for hihat position control if your
sound module responds to this).
IF I PURCHASE A DK10 CAN I UPGRADE
TO A DRUMKAT OR TURBO DRUMKAT?
Yes, if you own a dk10 and you decide
that you need more control of your
sound, you can upgrade your dk10 any-
time. Subtract the current price of a
drumKAT from the current price of a
dk10, and that is what it will cost to up-
grade. This means that it doesnt cost
more to upgrade later. Please note that
this applies only to second generation
dk10s (power jack on the back must be
metal). If you have the older version,
then you must call for a trade in.
WHAT OTHER FOOTSWITCHES AND PED-
ALS DO I NEED?
Both the drumKAT and the dk10 come
with one momentary (open) foot switch.
The drumKAT has 4 footswitch inputs
and the dk10 has two. You can of course
use the one foot switch provided and
move it around for your editing and kit
changes, but it is recommended that
you purchase several more.
On the drumKAT, the footswitch func-
tions are programmable. That means
that you can use the footswitch to send
out a tap tempo command or start a se-
quence. Foot switch input one is for Kit
Editing. Footswitch two is for KIT and
Song changes. Foot switch three is pro-
grammable, and the fourth is four spe-
cial functions (for advanced users).
The dk10 has two inputs. One for note
edit, and the other for MIDI channel
edit.
Both the dk10 and drumKAT have a bass
drum trigger input and a hihat input
(variable controller input).
Pintech also has a controller input hihat
that works well with the KAT. The Ya-
maha continuous hihat pedal also works,
but a mono 1/4" jack is required, not
the stereo jack that comes with the
pedal. The Roland HiHat pedal is not rec-
ommended, as it uses a different design.
The bass drum input on the KAT is less
picky, and will work with most bass
drum triggers.
You can see the pedals currently offered
by Alternate Mode by clicking here.
WHAT STAND CAN I USE?
Both the drumKAT and the dk10 have
feet on the back so that they will lie flat
and even on a table top. On the back
plate of the KAT, are four screw inputs.
These are used to mount our DKB
bracket, which is a post style adapter.
This post (7/8") is used to go into our
drumKAT stand or to be used with a stan-
dard multi clamp attachment The stand
and bracket can be purchased sepa-
rately. When you purchase a stand, it
ships with a bracket and extention arm
along with its base.
WHAT SOUND MODULES WORK WITH
THE DRUMKAT?
The drumKAT is a powerful MIDI control-
ler, capable of controlling 32 MIDI chan-
nels at the same time. A multi timbrel
sound module is recommended if you
are using the drumKAT for melodic
purposes. If you are using the drumKAT
to control software synths like DFH, Sty-
lus RMX, Fxpansion BFD, REASON or
LIVE, you will be amazed at how easy it
is to use the drumKAT to work with
these software products.
If you are purchasing a drumKAT TURBO,
you will be able to control the software
knobs on the synth in real time, using
our special Controller Functions.
If you are purchasing a dk10, you most
likely are using it to control mostly drum
sounds. Even though each pad can send
on a different channel, you will only be
able to play one note per pad.
For the soft synths, the dk10 will work
fine, but you will not be able to individu-
ally control velocity settings per pad.
For drum modules like the Yamaha, Ale-
sis and Roland products, the dk10 will
work great.

DRUMKAT VIDEOS
Audity Alt
This video demonstrates how you can
play a repeat- ing sequence on one pad
while using the other pads for creating a
melody. There are no loops on this
video. The bass and snare are performed
with the feet.
Ceremonial
In this video, each pad plays a different
instrument sound and melody. Strings,
cello, special effects. The hi hat pedal
acts as a pitch bend controller for one
of the melodies. Another pad starts and
stops the percussion loop.
India
Four pads on this kit enables the per-
former to play the tabla. Some pads use
velocity to call up different tabla tones.
Others use an alternate 4 pattern of
tabla sounds. The end result is a recre-
ation of the drum. The other pads share
the melody line, each pad containing
several notes of the melody. A reset pad
allows further manipulation of the mel-
ody along with the audio track that is
trig- gered on one pad.
Jungle
The bass drum and snare sounds reside
on several pads so that interesting
rhythms can be created. Long and short
tones are introduced on top of the rhyth-
mic base.
Marimba
This video demonstrates how one can
manipulate a me- lodic line by using
transpositions and alternate resets.
Some pads have two notes on them giv-
ing a chordal feel.
Morocco
This composition has several elements.
Some pads play the effects (birds, water
falls) that can be turned on and off.
There is a loop thats called up in the
background. The rest of the pads are
dedicated to play the balafon. Each note
of the balafon is actually a rhythmic
slice. The slices are played in sequence
to cre- ate ad hoc melodies.
Piano
This video demonstrate how to effec-
tively use alternate note patterns on
every pad to construct a melody with an
accom- paniment.
Audity Trans
The video starts with each strike on the
pad playing a one measure phrase. An-
other pad starts a measure long loop
while the drum pattern is created using
just two pads.
Giggles
This video demonstrates how one can
play an entire bass line, drum line and
melody line simultaneously while control-
ling a four measure loop.JazzBass, vibes
and piano are played live with- out the
use of loops. Transposition keys are
linked so that these instruments stay in
the same key.
Kotoland
All of the pads on the bottom drumKAT
are dedicated to playing the koto sam-
ples. Each pad can shift up an octave by
using velocity. Other pads play a short
strum. The upper drumKAT controls the
gong and snare sounds.
Melody Trans
This video demonstrates orchestral play-
ing on the drumKAT. Every pad sounds a
different instrument. Every repeated
strike on the pad plays a different pitch.
Transposition keys modu- late the entire
keyboard. The gate of the sounds are
controlled by applying continued pres-
sure on the pad.
Phat Free
The drumKAT in this video has bass gui-
tar pitches. Velocity controls the octave
shift of the bass tones. The ears of the
drumKAT have the melody sound, with
one pad controlling pitch bend. The bass
and snare sounds are played on the feet
while a background loop is present.
Steel Band
The bass guitar pattern is played on the
bass drum while the clave is on the hi
hat pedal. All of the pads on the drum-
KAT have the steel drum sound.
Artist ED URIBE
This amazing video demonstrates the
power of the drumKAT merged with a
terrific musician. There are no se-
quences in this video. All of the instru-
ments are played in real time. Alternate
note patterns on each pad make this pos-
sible.
Spectrasonics Stylus RMX
Stylus RMX is a soft synthesizer for the
MAC or PC. When used in conjunction
with the drumKAT, the drummer can
turn on and off loops at will, play any
drum sound on any pad, and control the
sounds pitch and length. It is also possi-
ble to control the knobs on the synthe-
sizer using control pathson the drum-
KAT Turbo. The videos listed below will
demon- strate how the drumKAT can con-
trol of these elements live.
Summary of the Feature Set of the
drumKAT:
Simple Mode: Plays one midi note num-
ber on one midi channel with a velocity
and gate setting
Multiple Mode: Up to four notes per pad
played simultaneously with or without a
programmed delay. Each sound has its
own midi channel, velocity and gate set-
tings.
Alternate Modes: There are several ver-
sions of Alternate Mode on the drumKAT
and Turbo. Alt 4, Alternate 8, Alternate
24 (tur- bo), Alternate 128 (turbo), Ran-
dom 8. In each variation, repeated
strikes on the pad cycles through the
note numbers.
Melodic Modes: The drumKAT also has
preset alternate modes called Melodic
Modes. Simply dial up the chord name,
and the al- ternate note pattern will
play the notes in the chord. There are
also Melodic Modes for Note Shift, Veloc-
ity Shift and Multiple Modes.
Note Shift Mode: You can play up to128
notes on one pad con- trolled by how
hard you hit. Simply set up the range of
the notes you want along with volume
velocity and gate time settings.
Gate Shift Mode: It is possible to control
the length of a sound by how hard you
play on the pad.
Velocity Shift Mode: In velocity shift
mode, you can blend up to four sounds.
Each sound gets its own velocity layer;
the range of when it plays by how hard
you hit. Each layer has its own note num-
ber, channel, volume velocity and gate
time settings.
Hi Hat Modes: There are several ver-
sions of the hi hat mode on the drum-
KAT. You can assign the general midi
note numbers for open, closed and chick
sounds (GM Hi hat), or you can assign up
to 10 different hi hat sounds that are
controlled by the hi hat pedal (hat-
NOTE). There is also a Continuous Con-
troller Mode that al- lows the hi hat
pedal to send out discreet values de-
pending on the position of the pedal.
This mode is used for soft synthesizers
that automatically change the sound de-
pendent on pedal position.
Gate Modes: Besides setting the exact
length of any note, the drumKATs gate
can be set to Roll Mode so that the rolls
sound natural as the notes bleed into
each other. Notes can also be set to
LATCH so that loops can be started and
stopped on any pad. It is also possible to
control the gates length with the hi hat
pedal.
Foot Controllers: The drumKAT can send
out any CC# (control- ler) data on the hi
hat pedal. This can used for sustain,
pitch bend, modulation, etc.
Motif Generator: You can record pat-
terns and have up to four of them play
back on one pad. These patterns can be
looped, timed repeats, once shot or
sliced.
Tap Tempo Control: It is possible to set
a tempo for both the internal motif gen-
erator and an External Clock simply by
assigning a pad or trigger to tap tempo.
The new tempo is sent out after two
strikes on the pad.
Pressure Modes: By pressing and holding
down on any pad on the drumKAT, it is
possible to send out controller data such
as sustain, modulation, pitch bend, etc.
Control Modes: The drumKAT has many
control modes that give it the ability
control the sounds on the pads and trig-
gers. Some of the modes areTranspose

The trapKAT is the largest pad controller on the market today. We created it this
way because we wanted you to play the trapKAT like a drum set, not just a bunch of
E-Pads thrown into a kit. Think of the trapKAT as the Enormous 26 piece Ergonomic
Electronic Drum Set.
TRAP
What is the trapKAT?
The trapKAT is a flat surface with large 24 playing zones designed to emulate an enor-
mous size drum kit but in a moderately sized footprint. There are rims all around the
instrument. This makes the instrument feel much larger than it is because these rim
pads are positioned as such to be played with the shaft of your stick. This means that
you have to reach to get to the cymbals, etc. The curious thing about this shape is
that despite its' unusual look, it is very natural and comfortable to play on.
Feel and Sensitivity
Besides having the proper ergonomics,
the feel and sensitivity must be the
most important feature of the Controller
if is to be considered a serious musical
instrument.
The trapKAT came about in 1995, and
has been transformed again and again,
each time improving and developing in
every way.
After years of trial, we are very proud to
introduce in our trapKAT 5, our newly de-
signed nuBounce pads. Without boast-
ing, we believe these are the best feel-
ing pads available on any electronic pad
or controller. It just feels natural, com-
fortable and responsive like no other
playing surface. You can buzz, roll,
hit...everything!
Great feeling pads wouldn't be so great
if there wasn't leading edge technology
driving the sensors. The trapKAT uses
space age FSR (Force Sensor Resistor)
sensors that have a tremendous dynamic
playing range that's linear in response
from soft to loud.
These sensors rely on pressure, not vibra-
tion for triggering, so the result is no
crosstalk, a common problem with the
mass usage of piezo technology in most
E-Pads on the market today. This allows
for multi-zone technology without the
worries of false triggering.
The trapKAT now includes our exclusive
"Power Dot" covering (designed by Aquar-
ian DrumHeads). These pads greatly im-
prove the feel and durability of the in-
strument, as well as make the pads eas-
ier to see in a darker environment.
It's All in the Training
All drum modules and controllers have
some level of sensitivity control, but
that just adjusts the overall dynamics of
the entire pad. Unique to KAT Products,
our controllers have Dynamic Pad Train-
ing.
When you first get a KAT Controller, one
of the first things you learn to do is to
"teach" your instrument your playing
style. By simply telling the trapKAT
what you call a soft hit, and what you
call a hard hit, the instrument takes the
dynamic range settings of the trapKAT's
sensor and superimposes your playing
style within it . This creates a signifi-
cant improvement over the response of
the pads. Why, because they respond to
YOUR dynamics. The trapKAT is tailored
to your personal taste. Training pads is a
real easy process.
Adding Bass Drum and Hi-Hat Pedals to
your trapKAT
The trapKAT will work with a number of
different manufacturers' bass drum and
hi-hat controller pedals, but this is OUR
tour, so we want to make sure you see
OUR amazing pedals!
These two pedals take a different ap-
proach from other manufacturers. Our
pedals use real bass drum pedals for trig-
gering both the hihat and bass drum. As
simple as this sounds, you will notice
that most of the E-Pads on the market
today just use a foot board with a spring
underneath for hihat use.
Our eHAT has both adjustable footboard
height, and adjustable spring strength
just like a real pedal. Electronic hihat
pedals never felt as good as this! The
eHAT sends out continuous controller
data from top to bottom, making the
open / closed hihat experience feel
smooth and natural.
If you are using the eHAT on a drumKAT,
DITI or Triggering Drum Module, there is
another sensor on the pedal that can be
used for sensing "chick" strokes. This al-
lows for truly dynamic velocity sensitive
triggering of the chick sound. This also
means that the eHAT can be used as a
beater-less bass drum pedal.
Finally, the eHAT mechanism is UNIVER-
SAL. This means that if you have your
own favorite bass drum pedal, and it has
a bottom plate underneath, then you
can attach the eHAT triggering module
to it and have your own custom eHAT.
Now that's a first!
The Kurzweil Sound Module Built In
Built into our newest trapKAT and mallet-
KAT (the KS Series) is a newly designed
sound engine created by Kurzweil Music
Systems and modified for Alternate
Mode. The sounds built into this engine
originate from Kurzweil's acclaimed PC3
keyboard series. It is a high quality
sound engine with 64 voice polyphonic
capabilities. The stereo outputs (or
mono summed) are balanced TRS connec-
tions along with a !" headphone jack,
with overall volume controlled by two
up/down buttons.
The trapKAT also has two !" line in
jacks so that you can plug in another
sound source (like a CD player for exam-
ple) and have this signal merged with
the audio outputs.
The trapKAT has a MIDI IN jack. It is pos-
sible to send MIDI songs to the sound
card so that it essentially becomes a Mu-
sic Playalong station. The sound card
can play up to 16 MIDI channels simulta-
neously, so there is tremendous possibili-
ties for many applications of this fea-
ture.
Musicians that have a malletKAT can also
use the trapKAT's sounds at the same
time as the trapKAT player. Perfect solu-
tion for schools and home studios.
The Sounds
The trapKAT has built in over 1000 me-
lodic instrument sounds. Everything un-
der the sink from keyboards, basses, or-
chestral sounds, guitars and lots of mal-
let percussion. Because this engine was
first designed for the malletKAT, there
are over 15 different vibraphone
patches, 15 different marimba patches,
plus xylophone, bells, chimes, timpani,
celeste, orchestral percussion, ethnic
percussion tam tams and more.
This sound engine doesn't stop with me-
lodic instruments. A new chip has been
added so that we could offer drum
sounds in the trapKAT. There are now
about 256 drum sets built into the trap-
KAT, about 128 of them are new to the
PC3 library and have been tailored to
perform and function well with the trap-
KAT.
trapKAT 5 KS Built-in Sounds
The Synth Card with the Drummer in
Mind...
Here are some of the DRUMMER features
and functions of this sound engine.
A great sounding TURN KEY module
that has hundreds of complete drum
sets covering many drumming styles
Unique poly exclusive hihats for realis-
tic sounding hihats
8 pedal position hihat control
Cymbal choking
Multi velocity layered snare drums (up
to 4) and toms. Multi layered basses
and cymbals as well.
Ability to change the individual vol-
umes on snares, toms, basses, hihats,
and miscellaneous sounds per kit.
Ability to change overall pitch of a kit
Ability to control Reverb and EFX set-
tings
The ability to include up to 4 different
kits on a User Kit so that sounds can be
mixed from Kit to Kit
Special Kits that have a collection of
snares, basses, toms, etc for construc-
tion kit building
Special program advance/backward
function so that you can call up all of
the kits with repeated hits on just one
pad.
We should note that because this sound
module is not a drum machine per se,
the engine does not have the ability to
control the ADSR of individual sounds or
the ability to control the pitch of a sin-
gle sound. It is a "pick up the sticks and
play" design.
This trapKAT/Sound Module combination
is designed for quick access to pre pro-
grammed drum sets without the need
for tweaking. It is possible however to
call up your favorite snare from one kit
and your favorite bass drum from other.
Up to 4 different kits can be called up
simultaneously on one User Kit. There
are even special programs that have all
of the snares or bass drums, or toms,
etc in the program so that you can make
up your own kit.
Finally because the trapKAT is a Control-
ler, it is possible to connect this instru-
ment to a computer and access any
sound imaginable. There are amazing
soundware companies that make extraor-
dinary drum sample libraries. Alternate
Mode offers downloadable files (SysEX
dumps) from our website to make con-
nections and programming to these pro-
grams easier.
As you will see in the next section, the
trapKAT is a powerful drum and percus-
sion controller capable of doing amazing
things.
Here are some links and videos that high-
light the features and functions just
mentioned:
The trapKAT Controller
By now you probably have seen the un-
usually cool footprint of the trapKAT,
and have caught a couple of videos show-
ing you the sensitivity of the pads and
the quality of the sounds. But what
about the controller itself.
The trapKAT, as you might have sus-
pected, is a very powerful MIDI control-
ler, with a huge set of extremely useful
features that allow you to tailor the in-
strument to the way you play. The trap-
KAT also has very special creative fea-
tures that opens up a whole new vocabu-
lary for expression.
Let's go over the ordinary and extraordi-
nary features of the trapKAT.
The Interface
As powerful as the trapKAT is, program-
ming it is much easier than other KAT
product. Why? Because there are dedi-
cated footswitches for functions, and
the pads themselves become a single
function to access
Take note editing for example. All you
have to do is step on the note edit
footswitch, and tap on the pad whose
note you want to change. Every time
you tap on the pad, you hear the next
sound advance. Double tap the
footswitch to go backwards. When you
like the sound and want to keep it on
the pad, just let go of the footswitch.
Kit Edit Mode
In every kit, you can control every as-
pect of the sounds response through
MIDI. For example, each pad can have
its own distinct
MIDI Channel
Minimum Velocity Setting
Maximum Velocity Setting
Velocity Curve
Gate Time Setting
Note Number
Hihat Setting
etc
On the trapKAT, stepping on the KIT Edit
Footswitch and tapping on one pad ac-
cesses one of these features. You have
the choice of setting the entire kit with
a value with one tap, or you can set up
each pad to its own value.
Hi-Hat Modes
The trapKAT has different modes for con-
trolling the hihats because of the many
different ways that sound modules and
VST plug-ins work with the hihats. For
example.
GM HiHAT Mode - is standard hihat con-
trol. There is an open/closed and
chick sound.
CONTROLLER #4 - Variable-- You as-
sign any pad to a single hihat note num-
ber, and the hihat pedal sends out posi-
tion data. The sound changes as you
move the pedal board.
HATNOTE Mode - The trapKAT sends
out different note numbers depending
on the position of the pedal. On the
5KS model, we use our own "poly exclu-
sive" software control to make the hi-
hats sound very realistic. There is no
machine gun effect when hitting the
pad in the same pedal position.
Pad Assignments - On the trapKAT, you
can program up to 4 dedicated pads for
hihat control.
Multiple Kits
Because the trapKAT can transmit on dif-
ferent MIDI channels per kit, each User
Kit can send out 4 different Program
Change Commands. This means that you
can mix and match the sounds from 4 dif-
ferent kits to make your own custom
kits.
Special Advanced Features
The trapKAT is capable of doing very
cool things when striking the pads. Here
are some examples of the advanced fea-
tures built into the trapKAT.
LAYERING - It is possible to layer up to
4 notes on one pad.
VELOCITY SHIFT - It is possible to have
different sounds play dependent on
how hard you hit the pad
ALTERNATE MODE - You can have a pad
play up to 16 different notes. Each
time to hit the pad, it advances to the
next note
CONTROLLER DATA - You can assign a
pad to respond to pressure so that you
can control things like pitch bend or
panning. You can also have a sound
play on the pad at the same time so
that the "effect" comes in only when
you press on the pad.
PAD LINKING - You can link any pad to
any pad. This means that when you
strike one pad, it will think that you
are hitting two pads and will sound
whatever is on the linked pad
GATE FUNCTIONS - Besides controlling
how long a sound lasts, the trapKAT
can turn a pad into a LATCH so that a
"loop" for example can be turned on
and off repeatedly
NEW KAT NOTE NUMBERS - MIDI's note
numbers go from 0-127. On the trap-
KAT, there are new note numbers that
perform special functions that do some
really cool things. Here's a list:
NOTE FREEZE - Stops the alternating
notes and keeps it there until you hit it
again
NOTE RESET - Brings the alternating
notes back to the beginning.
KIT ADVANCE - You can advance to the
next kit by hitting a pad assigned to
this note number
KIT BACKWARDS - You can decrement
backwards to the next kit by hitting a
pad assigned to this note number
PROGRAM ADVANCE - This calls up the
next drum kit without changing your
pad settings
PROGRAM BACKWARDS - This calls up
the previous drum kit without changing
your pad settings.
User Kits
On the trapKAT, you can store 24 of your
own kits, and assign a name for easy re-
membering.
Of course the trapKAT allows you to
COPY kits. This is a great way to create
your own default settings and copying
them all over.
In Conclusion
We encourage you to visit our website
and download the manual and 20+ ques-
tions guide to really learn what the trap-
KAT has to offer.

The panKAT is the latest MIDI Controller created by Alternate Mode. Taking it's heart
and soul directly from the malletKAT PRO v6, the panKAT offers all of the incredibly
rich features of the malletKAT, and presents this power on an exciting new playing
surface platform. The panKAT has the same FSR sensing technology as the malletKAT
as well as the refined sensitively and dynamics as its sister. It even feels and plays
similar because it uses the same special neoprene on its surface. This means that you
can play the panKAT with drum sticks, mallets and even steel pan sticks.
PAN
PERCUSSION TOY CHEST
Broadway Shows are starting to use the panKAT as a fantastic 30 pad toy center. On
each pad of the panKAT, you can assign any sound via MIDI note numbers on any MIDI
channel. This is perfect for setting up your percussion map for any type of show. Per-
cussionists are using it for congas, bongos, as well as bass drum and cymbals. Be-
cause it is so light, drummers are also setting it up with their acoustic drum kit. The
pads are large enough to strike comfortably, and the cool high tech arrangement and
look of the pads are perfect for gigging. It is even possible to play notes on two
footswitches.
LOOPING CONTROL CENTER
Just like the malletKAT, the panKAT can
start and stop loops and even collection
of loops with a single stroke. The
panKAT can also send out control data so
that you can control the knobs on your
synth via MIDI just by striking the pads.
It is the ultimate DJ controller because
besides begin a powerful control sur-
face, it can also play sounds on the
same pads at the same time via a
footswitch.
MELODIC CONTROLLER
Yes, the panKAT can be set up with the
same pitch configuration as a standard
steel drum. But it doesn't stop there.
With just a touch of footswitch, the
panKAT can instantly change its pitch
configuration to many, many different
note arrangements. C pan, D pan, Dou-
ble Seconds, Cello, Lead, etc. are just
the beginning. Now you can explore a
steel pan layout set up in a chromatic
scale, pentatonic scale, blues scale, mi-
nor scales, whole tone scales, GM drum
layouts. You can even create you own
layouts, change the octave with a touch
of a pad. You can use the sustain pedal,
pitch wheel pedals, virtual modulation
wheel, etc.
POWERFUL MIDI CONTROLLER
The panKAT offers the same dynamic
training as the malletKAT so that you
can tailor its response to your own play-
ing style. You can control its velocity
range, gate time settings and more. It's
also possible to layer sounds as well,
with its own performance settings. Of
course you can send out multiple bank
and program change commands on each
of its 128 USER Kits.
MalletKAT players will appreciate the
User Interface on the panKAT. All of the
features that you have come to expect
on the malletKAT are there, organized in
groups, making programming easier than
ever! You can even set up CHAINs on the
panKAT.
panKAT Features
One piece, 30 pad flat design, plus 2
virtual controller wheels in a layout
similar to the standard steel pan.

inHEAD
Electro-Acoustic Hybrid Drum Triggering
The inHEAD electro-acoustic hybrid drumhead delivers you the best of both worlds:
great sounding acoustic drums and the power and control that comes with the high-
performance FSR triggering of electronic drum sound modules.
You have never been able to be this creative with an acoustic drum until now: great
sounding acoustic drum sound combined with the added dimension of flawless
acoustic/electronic triggering!
Unleash your creativity. There is no
need to sacrifice your technique, nor
lose your finesse and your ghost strokes
to accommodate the unnatural feel of
electronic pads or the mass firing of un-
reliable triggers.The inHEAD lets you
play your acoustic drums and access
your electronic drum module without
any unwanted crosstalk, double trigger-
ing or loss of sensitivity. You can even
play with your fingers!
The inHEAD Hybrid Triggering brings
creative power to your acoustic drums
Blend electronic sounds and samples
with real acoustic drums to create new
hybrid sounds that are all your own.
Record live drum tracks and trigger ac-
curate digital performances simultane-
ously without the need for extensive ed-
iting.
Reinforce your acoustic drums sound
without microphones by accurately trig-
gering most drum trigger sound modules
to add new tone colors and volume.
Transform your traditional acoustic
drum set into a totally custom, high-
performance professional electronic
drum kit.
See the inHEAD on YouTube!
The secret to accurate acoustic drum
triggering is IN the head. The innova-
tive, patent pending FSR inHEAD drum-
head technology developed by Mid-
itronix and Aquarian Drumheads allows
the drum and head to vibrate naturally
to produce a full, resonant acoustic
drums sound while electronically sensing
even the lightest stroke of a drumstick.
Unlike conventional piezo drum triggers
that react to vibration and that are sus-
ceptible to sympathetic misfiring, the
entire inHEAD playing surface is the ac-
tual force sensing trigger sensor. The
head will only trigger when it senses
that is being touched by drumsticks, mal-
lets, brushes or fingers! This revolution-
ary approach to acoustic triggering elimi-
nates crosstalk and reduces double trig-
ger issues, while allowing for increased
sensitivity and dynamics.
Every inHEAD connects to an Aquarian in-
BOX. The inBOX powers the inHEAD sen-
sor and then sends clean and accurate
triggering signals to trigger most any
manufacturers electronic drums sound
module or drum triggering device. There
is also an auxiliary input on the inBOX to
connect to the rimSHOT rim trigger (in-
cluded) for even more creative perform-
ance options.
Fatten up your acoustic kick drum sound
with the kickZONE bass drum trigger.
The kickZONE's proprietary piezo sensor
mounting makes it less susceptible to
crosstalk and unintentional triggering.
This is an easy triggering solution for a
big kick sound.

The
GigKAT
Small in size. Big in sound.
The sounds inside the GIGKAT are the same sounds that are in the malletKAT 7KS and
the trapKAT 5KS. This built in sound module comes from Kurzweil Music Systems and
are essentially the same sounds that are in their legendary PC3 keyboards.
A full featured, professional synthe-
sizer module
There are over 1000 melodic instru-
ments built in. All the sounds that you
need and want. Everything from key-
boards, basses, synths, orchestral
sounds and more. But because this was
designed for the malletKAT, there are
over 15 vibraphones, and 15 marimbas,
plus bells, xylophone, timpani, chimes,
orchestral percussion, ethnic percussion
and more. BTW, there isn't a better
sounding vibraphone sample available
on any hardware sound module regard-
less of price.
The sounds don't stop there. A new chip
has been added to this card which now
includes a new drum sound library.
These are beautiful sounding drum sets,
with realistic sounding hihats, and cym-
bals (and yes, they ring for 8 seconds).
With the new poly-exclusive hihat mode
built into the trapKAT, hihat playing
sounds real without the dreaded ma-
chine gun effect heard on other dedi-
cated drum modules. There are about
250 complete drumsets and percussion
built into the GIGKAT.
Where's the knobs and faders?
Take a look at the GIGKAT and you will
notice no knobs or buttons other than
the volume control buttons. That is be-
cause access to all of the sounds in this
module are performed by sending a Bank
and Program Change to the unit. We de-
liberately built this module this way in
order to deliver an incredibly fantastic
sounding module at a very, very low
price.
The GIGKAT is multi-timbral. This means
that it can play on different MIDI chan-
nels at the same time. Just send the ap-
propriate Bank and Program Change on
each channel, and the GIGKAT will play
multiple sounds simultaneously. If you
are using just one instrument at a time,
it is best to default to channel one. The
multi effects built into the GIGKAT start
on channel one and continue to send ef-
fects on the other MIDI channels until its'
resources run out.
Seamless integration with the mallet-
KAT, trapKAT XL, and drumKAT Turbo
The sounds in our Kurzweil Sound Engine
are so amazing, we want every KAT
owner to experience them!!
To make the GIGKAT an even more unbe-
lievable value, we will give away the lat-
est KS Series software chip for your KAT
instrument FREE at the time of pur-
chase. This alone can save you hundreds
of dollars on software upgrades, all for
the modest price of this unit.
When malletKAT, trapKAT, or drumKAT
Turbo owners install this new chip (and
reinitialize their instruments), the GIG-
KAT becomes a turn key sound module
with NO programming required. The
User Kits will automatically display the
names of the sounds. It's as if the sounds
were built into the unit.
See our upgrades section for all the op-
tions you have available for your current
KAT instrument!
Acts as a Secondary sound source for
nearly all MIDI controllers and keyboards
For non KAT owners, if your keyboard
can send out Bank and Program Changes,
then the GIGKAT is for you!

Yamaha DTX 900
The Yamaha DTX900 Electronic Drum Trigger Module offers a collection of essential
acoustic drum sounds with a broad spectrum of voices taken from Yamaha's world-
renowned MOTIF-Series synthesizers. You get a grand total of 1,326 voices.
Even on a live stage, these subtle, yet dynamic percussion voices bring forth a com-
pelling drum presence. The DTX900 drum trigger module's Expanded Articulation Sys-
tem creates subtly different samples even when you strike the drum with the same
strength. You'll create more natural
snare rolls and re-create the feel of a le-
gato ride cymbal or staccato hi-hat. This
module is equipped with rich and power-
ful DSP effects including global effects,
such as reverb and chorus, which can be
used commonly throughout the whole
system, as well as variation effects that
can be used on each drum kit.
The trigger module is equipped with a
chain function that enables you to pro-
gram drum kits freely, in any order that
you desire. Even during a live perform-
ance, you can switch to another drum
kit easily just by hitting a pad.
The DTX900 also features internal re-
cordings of 87 songs from a wide variety
of genres. You can mute the drum part
and play along with a song, and you can
also record your own performance.
Add original sounds through sampling
The DTX900 module is equipped with an
Aux In/Sampling In connector. You can
connect it to an external sound source
or use a microphone and sample your
own audio, from instruments to vocals.
You can even load original voices from
USB flash memory and assign them to
different pads.
Customization enables you to create
your ideal drum sound
The possibilities are limitless. You can
arrange the versatile drum kit as you
please to create your own original drum
set. You can switch to different snare or
cymbal sounds, add a cowbell sound or
a woodblock sound, and then you can
save your settings. Next time you select
the patch, your kit will be just as you
left it.
Versatile trigger features
The module is also equipped with a
stacking feature, which plays multiple
drum voices simultaneously when you
hit a single pad, and an alternation fea-
ture, which changes the voice each time
you hit a single pad. By combining these
features, you can perform in ways that
would be impossible with an acoustic
drum set.
Rich training features for improving your
performance skills
The module has a metronome feature
that enables you to set precise types of
clicks for different types of notes. You
can change the locations of the click ac-
cents. It is also equipped with a groove
check function, which checks the accu-
racy of your timing and tells you how
off-rhythm you are, and a rhythm gate
function, in which the drum only pro-
duces sound for accurate shots. This al-
lows you to train for practice as if you
were playing a game. With the Aux-In
connector, you can connect a CD player,
portable MP3 player, or other device and
practice using any song you like.
Connect to PCs and other devices
The MIDI and USB connectors allow you
to not only play sounds from an external
sound source and use the high-quality
sound of the DTX900 as a sound source,
but to also add power to your music
creation by using Digital Audio Worksta-
tion software to create a MIDI recording
of your own performance. In addition,
Steinberg Cubase AI 5 is included. You
can use it to change parameters such as
the tempo, timing, and tone of your re-
corded MIDI performances. The unit will
also function as a MIDI-controller for VST
instruments. With a free download from
Yamaha's website, the DTX900 panel switches can even be used to control Cubase AI
5 and other DAWs, allowing for more streamlined music creation.
You can use the six Individual Out connectors to send the snare, tom, and other drum
sounds to your mixer individually. You can record to a multitrack recorder easily with-
out using the complicated miking that you would need to record from an acoustic
drum set. Also, you can use the Digital Out (S/PDIF) connector to send digital quality
sound from the DTX900 to an external device.
A perfect companion for your dk10, drumKAT, or trapKAT.
