Loved this book! First of all, I got to get this out of the way, I am so glad Harry is back to being Harry (so to speak). Even though Harry wears the mantle of Winter Knight, he is not indestructible in this book, and it is is foibles and shortcomings that make for an interesting journey in Harry's development. The last book was lacking in all the social interactions with the various supporting characters for obvious reasons because of the nature of what Harry was going through. However, this book does not disappoint in the reintroduction and assessment of those characters back into the story line as the story progresses along. Some of the best interactions come along with new and surprising minor characters like Tut Tut and Lacuna. Of course, it wouldn't be a true struggle intimately and mentally unless Harry had a chance to interact and deal with Molly and Karen. I like that this book is all encompassing. Meaning, his struggles within are mirrored by his struggles without, and thus unfolds the great mystery of this book which will have you guessing for a while. If you are clever and pay attention, though, you can figure out who is at the root of the problems before the big climax. However, don't be fooled into thinking that all the surprises are over with at that point. In true Jim Butcher style, he sets up a few "whammies" packed in at the end which will undoubtedly play nicely into the next book. The anticipation is already killing me.

In GHOST STORY, Harry Dresden became a ghost, wispy and immaterial. Sort of like the whole book. With COLD DAYS, Jim Butcher brings back the kick-ass, snark-loving, always in trouble Harry Dresden we have all come to know and love. COLD DAYS clocks in at over 520 pages and is one of the biggest of the fourteen Dresden files. In a way, it needed to be. If the Dresden files are a roller coaster, the first twelve books were the slow, exhilirating climb, Ghost Story was the pregnant pause at the top and COLD DAYS represents the first glorious moments of freefall as the ride suddenly gains speed in what promises to be a thrill ride of epic proportions. Ensonced as the Winter Knight, Butcher takes Dresden through a series of situations that any reader will come

to recognize. The structure is familiar and as comfortable as your favorite easy chair, but in every page and every line, the stakes feel higher, the danger feels greater and the situations scarier than anything we have seen before. With his new power granted by Mab, Harry sets out on an impossible mission. In this case, literally impossible. As always, Harry involves many of his friends, but unlike previous books, Butcher does not set up the friends as objects to build problems around. Instead, Harry's friends having grown warts, toughened backbones and grown in power. Dresden has an army and instead of continuously worrying how one or more of them will be killed, Harry uses his soldiers for the warriors they are and they come through in new, surprising ways--and are changed in even more surprising ways. Butcher has said there will be 5-7 more Dresden books. Not many of them will offer a more exciting ride or satisfying conclusion than COLD DAYS. Dresden is back. More powerful. More emotional. And more than ready to kick ass. It is a new beginning and leaves much left unsaid, ready to be tackled in the next book, but what Dresden book doesn't do that. Enjoy COLD DAYS. It's exactly why you like the Dresden Files in the first place.

Well Harry saves the world again. This time as the Winter Knight. Cold Days focuses on Harry learning the ropes as the new White Knight but faces another huge task with only his standard band of scoobies. Apparently some of the bad things happening to Harry's friends in Ghost Story have been some what resolved. Molly is no longer living on the streets but has fancy digs of her own. (I'm sure that story will appear somewhere later) And she gets a new job at the end of the book. Harry and Murphy's relationship has some play in this book and it is good to see that advance. Also, Harry and his brother get some relationship time too. The story reveals more about Demonreach and more about what the Fey really are and what Winter's role in the universe is. Butcher is clearly arcing towards the ending of his story and following the Hero's Journey very nicely. I'm still not a fan of how much physical and emotional abuse he lumps on Harry only to have him struggle through and save the day any way. There seems to be enough dramatic tension in the story already without having to beat his hero to a pulp every time.
