any of us look in awe at skyscrapers and other architectural marvels, but we rarely notice the wonderful engineering that is buried just beneath the earths surface that allows us to live modern comfortable lives. Daniel Locke, President and CEO of Kana Pipeline, founded the company in 1984 in order to provide exceptional contracting services to private and public entities in commercial, industrial,

residential and institutional developments. Kana Pipeline is now an industry leader in wet utility pipeline construction and specializes in domestic and reclaimed water mains, fire line, sewer, storm drain, concrete structures and related infrastructures. At Kana Pipeline, we are dedicated to the quality and efficiency needed to successfully complete projects safely, on schedule and under budget.

says Locke. Our teams are built with a focus on integrity and a dedication to quality at all costs. Among some of their projects featured here is work at the Toll Brothers housing development called, Baker Ranch in Lake Forest, Shea Homes Sendero site in Irvine, as well as MATT Constructions new Education and Vision Center currently underway at the Huntington Library and Gardens in San Marino. www.calcontractor.com www.calcontractor.com

Toll Brothers began construction on their master-planned community earlier last year, where they partnered with homebuilder Shea Homes to construct more than 2,000 new homes. The development is a mix of single-family homes and rental apartments that spans more than 40-acres and will include a central park, walkways and bike paths. Kana Pipeline is doing the water pipeline as well as the sewer system and flood control work on the first phase of this project. Kana Pipelines portion of the project began in May and the remainder will be completed in sequential phases that Kana Pipeline will continue to bid. Kana Pipeline will place approximately 2,500 linear feet of 8-inch water main and 18

another 2,500 linear feet of clay sewer main, along with a variety of flood control pipe by the end of the summer of 2014. Kana Pipeline is also currently working at the Huntington Library, a 450-acre preserve property in San Marino. The Huntington Foundation oversees a variety of museums and educational centers and many of the buildings are going through some modernizations and building additions right now. They are moving and creating new roadways and park areas, as well as relocating trees and planting new trees and greenscaping. Kana Pipeline was the contractor chosen to install the wet utility pipeline. This $900,000 plus job for Kana Pipeline includes the installation of sewer, domestic water pipeline,

potholing and a unique storm drainage system that was installed at the entrance of the Huntington Library complex. The storm drainage system construction included more than 4,000 linear feet (LF) of 4 to 15 PVC SDR 35 and more than 1,800 LF of 18 to 30 RCP pipe, as well as APWA manholes, curb inlets, catch basins, drain boxes, junction structures, filter inserts, area drains and trench drains. A unique feature of this project includes a 71 x 47 pipe arch (squash pipe) perforated retention system. The sewer system work consisted of more than 2,000 LF of 4 to 8 PVC SDR 35 pipe, sewer manholes, sewer cleanouts, various connections to existing sewer, manholes and laterals, www.calcontractor.com

a concrete encasement, sawcut removal and replacement of asphalt and other pavement. The fireline pipeline installation work consisted of more than 2,300 LF of 6 to 10 PVC C-900 Class 150 pipe, 2-way Fire Department Connection, sprinkler risers, post indicator valves, fire hydrant assemblies and fire hydrant relocations. The domestic water pipeline construction included the installation of more than 1,000 LF of 4 PVC C-900 Class 150 pipe, and all related fittings and thrust blocks. Vacuum utility potholing was completed in preparation for water, sewer and storm drain demolition and for verifying existing utility connections. just recently completed. Some final completion work will be done in the new year and Kana Pipeline will continue to follow and bid on future phases. Kana Pipeline has many ongoing jobs throughout Southern California. Presently, they have a wide variety of private residential, commercial/ industrial, and public works project types. The type of work fluctuates depending on the availability of work that is out there to bid. Its cyclical, says Locke. It is necessary for Kana Pipeline to maintain a good handle on their heavy equipment usage, especially with so many projects going on at the same time. Peter Smith is the Equipment Manager for Kana Pipeline, Inc. and he has his hands

full assuring that his crews are equipped with the right machine for each individual application. We rent nearly as much as we own, although we have expanded our fleet of heavy equipment and trucks substantially in 2013, says Smith. It is our intentions to expand our fleet as least as much as we did in 2013 and possibly more if we continue to grow at the same rate. Kana Pipeline, Inc. currently has (13) backhoes, (4) wheel loaders and (7) excavators in their fleet. Kana Pipeline added a new manufacturer to their fleet in 2013 after renting them first for more than 30 months. LiuGong is still a relatively new player in the California construction market and they are beginning to make 19

contractors standup and take notice, says Smith. We recently purchased a new LiuGong 936D excavator and two LiuGong CLG856-3 wheel loaders from Westrax Machinery and we also just returned from a trip to LiuGongs manufacturing plant, where we took a tour of the LiuGong facility in Liuzhou, Guangxi Province in southern China. We were very impressed with their state-of-the-art facility and their emphasis on quality. LiuGong has a total of 24 manufacturing facilities worldwide, more than 12,000 employees, more than 400 dealers across six continents, 2,650 sales outlets and have invested more than $81 million into their R&D program in 2012 alone. To properly support their product line, LiuGong maintains 12 parts depots located strategically throughout the world. They now have 14 product lines available including 20 20

wheel loaders, excavators truck mounted and crawler cranes, bull dozers, rollers, motor graders, forklifts, mini excavators, skid steers, backhoe loaders, pavers, cold planers, concrete equipment and mining dump trucks. Dennis McShane from Westrax Machinery approached me with the LiuGong line a couple of years ago. Dennis, Westrax and A.S.A.P Heavy Equipment Rental are all well-known trusted names in Southern California. I have known and trusted Dennis for many years and that is why I agreed to rent a LiuGong excavator and two LiuGong wheel loaders from A.S.A.P (Westrax Machinerys Rental Division) for an extended period of time in order to try them out, says Smith. Our operators commented right away on the tremendous strength and maneuverability of the LiuGong machines. The

controls took some getting used to and when the decision was made to purchase the LiuGongs, we bought them with more conventional controls. It was nice to have that option. Kana Pipeline, Inc. is expecting fairly dramatic growth in 2014 and will most likely continue to expand their heavy equipment inventory. Dennis McShane was able to put together a very attractive package for us. The price point on these machines allows us to acquire almost two machines for the price of one of the leading competitors. This means a lot to us as we look forward to a busy and profitable 2014. Kana Pipeline, Inc. is headquartered in Placentia CA on Miraloma Avenue.
