The American Resting Place: Four Hundred Years of History Through Our Cemeteries
and Burial Grounds
Wednesday, October 28, 2009, 7:00 p.m.
Just in time for Halloween, cultural historian Marilyn Yalom discusses her definitive history of
the American cemetery. The book illuminates gravestones, graveyards, and burial practices
found throughout the United States, including those of the Spanish Catholic missions of Cali-
fornia, and presents vivid and poignant descriptions. Her son, Reid S. Yalom, who lives in San
Francisco, contributed the photographs.

Raising More Hell and Fewer Dahlias: The Public Life of Charlotte Smith, 1840-1917
Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 7:00 p.m.
Autumn Stanley extensively researched this first biography of nineteenth-century magazine
editor and reformer Charlotte Smith, who became a force to be reckoned with despite hav-
ing only a grade-school education and supporting two children alone. Her first periodical, the
Inland Monthly, was doubly rare: edited by a woman but not a women's magazine; and a profit-
able venture, bringing a large sum when sold.
