What is PALS?: PALS is a series of mini workshops for parents of deaf or hard of hearing preschool aged children. The workshops are designed to provide parents with opportunities to network with each other and be exposed to a variety of guest speakers who will provide information about supporting your deaf or hard of hearing child. Can I Bring My Child?: Deaf or hard of hearing children are welcome to come and play in the Early Years Centre while their parents attend the workshop. Staff from the Early Years Centre and home visiting teachers will supervise your children in the playroom. All modes of communication, spoken and sign will be acknowledged and respected in the playroom. This is an opportunity for deaf or hard of hearing preschoolers to come together and simply have fun through play. Where?: The Manor at the Bob Rumball Centre For The Deaf, 2395 Bayview Ave, Toronto, ON M2L 1A2 Session Dates: October 18, November 22, February 21, and April 25 Time: 10:30 a.m. 12:30 p.m. (Please have your child settled in the Early Years Centre by 10:15 a.m.) What to Bring: Nutritious nut free snack. Children do not need to be toilet trained to attend. If your child needs to have his/her diaper changed, a teacher will come and get you to do so. Oct. 18th The Bilingual Child Janet Martino, Teacher Central Home Visiting Outreach Program and Robyn Sandford, Educational Consultant Bilingualism means respecting, learning, and using two languages. As the term relates to children who are deaf or hard of hearing it means the learning and use of American Sign Language (ASL) and English. The workshop will focus on the benefits of bilingualism to optimize the deaf childs language, hearing, speaking, literacy and learning potential. Nov. 22nd The Tree of Life Sue Allen, Social Worker, PAH This workshop builds a story about parents and childrens lives that focuses on their skills, abilities, hopes and dreams. Responses to joys and hardships in family life will be acknowledged and identified. Participants will be empowered with an understanding of their skills, abilities and relationships with significant people in their lives. Feb. 21st Lets Communicate! Jan Casali, Speech Language Pathologist Age appropriate speech and oral language milestones will be discussed. Effective strategies and techniques to enhance your preschoolers communication will be presented. April 25th Acoustics in the Home and School Pam Millet, Educational Audiologist
This workshop will discuss the acoustic environment in the home, preschool and kindergarten classroom. Information will be provided on the latest hearing aid technology, sound field systems and personal F.M. systems preschoolers will be discussed. Strategies and positive parenting techniques will be explored.
