2. Express Yourself

SEGREGATE THE WASTE- APPLY 5 RS (REDUCE, REFUSE, REUSE, RECYCLE & RETHINK) IN DAY TO DAY ACTIVITIES.

Recycling creates jobs, helps build a stronger economy and is a way of life. 82 million tons of waste recycled in 2006 is equivalent to taking 36 million cars off the road for one full year. It requires more energy to manufacture a brand new aluminum car than it does to recycle 20 aluminum cans. If we do not dispose of the waste in a more systematic manner, more than 1400 sq. km of land, which is the size of the city of Delhi, would be required in the country by the year 2047 to dispose of it.The safest means of disposing of the most toxic wastes: organic solvents, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and oil-base compounds is through Industrial high temperature incineration. E-waste inventory is expected to be 8,00,000 tonnes by 2012 in our country.Even from the health point of view it is better to segregate waste at source.

6. Terms to ponder Biodegradable waste includes organic waste, for example, kitchen waste, vegetables, fruits, flowers, leaves from the garden, and paper. Most of the biodegradable waste is household waste that is generated daily and amounts to a large percentage of all waste. Agricultural waste is also biodegradable in nature. Such waste is also known as organic waste and decomposes very fast, causing harm to the environment and health. The best way of disposal of this waste is through the method of composting. Non-Biodegradable: A large amount of wastes that are generated by industries are formed of substances, which cannot be easily broken down by the microorganisms. These substances are called non-biodegradable. The plastic we use to make polythene bags is an example of a non-biodegradable substance. Microorganisms do not eat up these plastics and they choke the soil as no water and air is able to reach it. Slowly, the soil turns barren and devoid of life. Did you know that a polythene bag could take as much as 30 years to disintegrate? Incineration is the most practical method of disposal of hazardous and toxic waste as these items cannot be disposed of in the landfill sites nor can they be composted or recycled. These waste items are highly toxic and could cause serious damage to life. Through the process of incineration, waste is burnt in large furnaces. At the end of the process, all that is left behind is ash.
