Each student will develop a template (format) for a non-

traditional :: month calendar. Te theme for your calendar
is Time. Tis is open to your interpretation; however, you
must clearly identify how you are dening Time; it must be
Time sensitive; i.e.: how can you show a sense of time? what is
time? can you show how an event transitions (narrative) or an
evolution? can something dierent happen at dierent times?
Each page in your spread must include the name of the
months, seven days, the days of the week, as well as possible
space for a user to write down information. Create hierarchy
within a exible, modular grid. Design pages that use space
and typographic emphasis in a meaningful and functional way.
Experiment, surprise us! Several variations will be initially
explored before rening a nal piece.

Typography is the focus, not photography, or illustration
of any kind. Tis will be strictly adhered to as I check your
concepts. Each student must have their concept and initial
sketches approved.
systems must be present that support your theme of how
you are dening time (these can include color, how you use
the typography and/or minor graphic elements, etc).
:: quotes that are about time or that reference time must
be explored as major (, quotes) & minor elements of the
hierarchy of each spread. Note that the quotes themselves
are not enough to develop the theme; what you do with
the layout will determine how your Time concept comes
to fruition.
Develop an expansive Modular Grid system that will
display the days/numbers in a creative and preferably
functional fashion.
Toughtfully position the systems in sequence to have a
successful and interesting rhythm. Consider what might be
used to physically, visually, or conceptually link the subse-
quent spread, could it be color, texture, movement, etc.?

Cover should be printed on cover weight paper and
must have the year and your name on the front or back.
: picas x , picas (; x , inches) is the minimum size; no
exceptions. Smaller sizes are too dicult to read.
Each page should consider an inside margin of ., picas for
binding; bleeds may be used, otherwise set up a margin for
the rest of the page.
:+ colors may be used, with tints and shades.
Graphic elements may be used in support of the type, only
if typography is the main element/focus.
Final: wire (not plastic) spiral or accordian bound; with
::: pages.
Fonts: Pick one typeface from the subsequent list from two
of the four styles listed. Two contrasting and compatible
typefaces may be used or choose one font family.

Modular grids do not always have to have gutters (the small
alleyways connecting the spatial zones are called gutters).
You may also bleed off the edges and break the grid. Experi-
ment with layouts that might use a spread (2 pages). If you
use this approach, would it be best to lay out the entire year
that way, or would it be interesting to contrast it with one
page that boasts a large quote?

non-traditional calendar 1 modular grid, fonts
Modular grids can be as simple or complex as you
desire. This magazine layout has four columns and four rows.
Notice that you can vary the widths, as long as it makes
sense to do so. Image or graphics can cross many modules,
or just one, allowing for many variations. The grid you will
work with is a standard modular grid, you can break the grid,
or use it tightly; Explore all options. Remember, the grid is a
tool, it does not relegate your design.
Choose either one full
font family or fonts that
complement each other.
All fonts can be found in
the lab.
