THE EAGLEt
A Message from the University President
Forty years ago, Fr Pedro Arrupe SJ, the Superior General of the Jesuit order, spoke to a gathering of European Jesuit alumni. It was in that speech that he first uttered the phrase that has shaped the formation that happens here at the Ateneo de Manila: men for others. This is so simple a phrase it runs the risk of becoming a tired tag line, an empty slogan. In that speech, Fr Arrupe reminded us of what Jesus Christ lived and taught, namely, that true love for God cannot be separated from love of neighbor, especially the poor who live at the margins of wealth and power. He also talked about social sin and of the sinister ways in which sin objectifies itself and goes out to the periphery of our personal core. He admitted how difficult it is to be good in a broken world, and how tempting it always is to just resign and give up and abdicate our responsibility to lead and serve others. Then he challenged us to live more simply, to refrain from profiting from unjust social structures, and to work actively in dismantling these systems of injustice in the world. Since the theme of this issue of the Eaglet is Live Christ, Share Christ, I do hope that you will strive to know Jesus Christ better. It is not enough to just know of him, the way you study subject matter in school. Know him who is very much present and close to you. Know Christ that you may love Him, and follow Him. Learn to love others, and not just those who can love you back. Then perhaps you will discover that living Christ, sharing Christ will be the deepest love your heart can bear. ad majorem Dei gloriam,

A Message from the Headmaster

My Dear Ateneans, I want to thank you and congratulate you and your mentors for the first issue of the EAGLET this schoolyear. I am happy to know that this years theme is LIVE CHRIST. SHARE CHRIST. This theme fits with the Churchs celebration of the Year of Faith that began last October 11, 2012 and will end on November 24, 2013. The Year of Faith was declared by Pop Benedict XVI in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world (Porta Fidei 6). We cannot live Christ if we do not own Him inside our hearts. Therefore, it is important to nurture a deep and personal relationship with Christ in prayer and Sacraments especially the Most Holy Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The more we are able to know and love Christ in prayer and the Sacraments, the more closely we are able to follow Him. The purpose of living Christ is to share Him with others especially those who are poor and needy. This is a sure proof that we are living Christ through concrete and simple acts of service to our brothers and sisters in need. As you know, our country and the entire world now are beset with great problems of war and famine. We hear terrible news about the civil war in Syria, the gun fights between the MNLF and the government troops in Zamboanga City and Basilan for over a week now, the terrorism in Iraq, for example. These are hard time of violence that cause much suffering of many innocent people. In this Year of Faith, we need to more and more pray for true peace and unity in the world and urge others to pray with us. In our small and little ways, we need to also help the innocent victims of violence. In this way, we will be able to change for the better to be better Christians, better Filipinos, better Ateneans as St. Ignatius of Loyola had envisioned all of us to be. May this issue of the EAGLET inspire all Ateneans to be more prayerful, more generous, and more compassionate towards the poor and suffering especially the victims of war and violence. Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam!

Diocesan Mass of The Holy Spirit

Before the start of the Mass, I was so struck when I saw the different schools in Quezon City. Many different faces surprised me. They all seemed happy to represent their schools in the Diocesan Mass of the Holy Spirit. They also seemed excited to hear the Homily of Bishop Ongtioco. As a representative of the Ateneo Grade School, I also felt the same way. When the celebration started, there was a parade of the different school flags. When our flag was being displayed, I felt the rush of the Atenean spirit throughout my body. I also felt excitement and fear. Excitement because it shows how glad I am to be an Atenean, fear because the flag might fall because of its size. Then, the mass started. The introduction song was played and the altar servers, priests and the bishop marched to the altar. As I sang along the song, I felt content and happy, though Im not a good singer. After the Readings and Responsorial Psalm, the Homily was delivered by Bishop Ongtioco. The Homily was a nice one and it spoke about how we should trust in the Holy Spirit and how the Holy Spirit will help us this school year. But the Holy Spirit will not be the only one to help us so we must also help ourselves by trusting in the Holy Trinity, telling the truth and obeying our parents,

teachers and of course, God. For me, when I heard the Homily, I thought it was just simple tips on how to be straight As students, but when I reviewed on what I heard, I saw a deeper meaning that the Triune God is with us whatever we do, whatever problem we face and that the God with three personas is with us forever. When it was time to say Peace be with you to others, I could clearly see the smile on their faces and through their eyes, the joy of giving peace. When the Mass ended, I was able to bless to Bishop Ongtioco and even got to take a picture with him. At that moment, I felt joyful and blessed as I returned to school with a smile on my face and joy in my heart. Shawn Hervie D. Rom

ATENEO JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL & GRADE SCHOOL STUDENTS RULE ICTSI-JGFP JUNGOLF SEASON
The Ateneo Junior Golf Team dominated the Midgets Division in the recently concluded ICTSI-JGFP Junior Golf Tournament held in various golf courses in Metro Manila. The Ateneo Jungolfers were the best jungolf team in the tournament winning the championship in the Midgets 1 (1114 yrs old) and the runner-up honors in the Midgets 2 (8-10 yrs old) divisions. It was a rare finish for the two teams considering that the field was full of talented players from the other schools in the city. Aside from winning the team competition (5 to play 3 to count format), junior HS student and Team Captain Aidric Chan from 7-Malvar who took 4th place honors in last years Callaway Junior World Tournament and Champion in the West College Combine in San Diego, Ca was the champion in the individual category and Carl Corpus from 7-Agoncillo another veteran in international tournaments took the second place honors. DANCE DISTRICT WINS 1ST PRIZE IN FOOTLOOSE!

Ateneo Dance District (ADD), the spanking new dance organization of the Ateneo Junior High School, won its first competition on the night of Friday, January 24. Beating dance crews older than they were from the Ateneo High School, ADD took first prize at Footloose, the dance craze competition of Ignation, the 18th Ateneo de Manila High School fair. Thanks to their energetic, crowd-pleasing piece, the members of ADD took home not just bragging rights but P30,000 in prizes as well. As announced during the competition, the winners were determined not only by the contests two judges, but by the members of the audience as well, each of whom paid P10 for every vote they cast for their favorite group. All told, eight dance crews competed in Footloose. Finishing on top of Footloose were the following members of ADD: Matthew Christian V. Pile (8-Bellarmine), Arvin Martin I. Santos (8-Bellarmine), Joaquin Antonio R. Nacino (8-Berchmans), Jose Alejandro P. Agravante (8-Brebeuf), Dominic Xavier L. Villa (7-Burgos), Carlo Miguel G. Aquino (8-Gonzaga), Miguel Jay A. Dimaiwat (8-Gonzaga), Martin Javier L. Garcia (8-Pignatelli), Antonio Leon B. Martinez (8-Pignatelli), Emmanuel Javier S. Mariazeta (8-Regis), and Luis Gabriel U. Montenegro (8-Regis). To prepare for Footloose, the boys practiced three hours every day for several weeks under the guidance of their coach and moderator, Danni Cornejo. Ateneo Dance District was established as an AJHS org in June 2013. The story of the ADD is not just about talent but a story of a lot of hard work and perseverance. You should have seen how the boys practiced frequently . Not content with mere talent, they constantly were trying to reinvent themselves. Their coach, by her sheer love of dance, would come all the way from Makati to train the kids. There is a term we have for that . We call it giving and not counting the cost . We are all proud of you! (Photo by Ingrid Palisoc Agravante)

Ateneans awarded in the Honor the Microsoft Champs

Anton Raphael S. Cabalza, AGS 11, and Ms. Mara Melanie D. Perez, Grade 6 Class Adviser, were awarded in the Honor the Microsoft Champs competition sponsored by Microsoft Philippines, National Bookstore and HTC Philippines. The contest is a nationwide search for the most outstanding students of the country. Ms. Perez nominated Anton, her student for 4 years, by writing an essay about his achievements in school and in his community, and why he should be considered as a Microsoft Ambassador. Out of almost 200 nominations of high school and college students, Anton is chosen as one of the 8 most outstanding students in the Philippines. Each awardee received a copy of Windows 8 OS, the new Microsoft Office 2013, and an HTC 8S phone. Another Atenean from the Loyola Schools, Louie T. Koa, was awarded as one of the student Microsoft Ambassadors. The 5th Year BS ECE student was also nominated by his teacher, Asst. Prof. Carlos M. Oppus. The awarding ceremony that formally honored the Microsoft Champs with their nominators was held last September 14 at the Microsoft Booth in Glorietta 4. Honor the Microsoft Champs aims to empower students by providing them the opportunity to be recognized outside the classroom for their hard work and accomplishments, said Tovia Vaaelua, Microsoft Philippines Business Lead for Office. The AJHS congratulates Mrs Theresa Roldan, Music Subject Area Coordinator , for placing the Philippines in the map once again by the recent win of the Hail Mary the Queen Children Choir. The Hail Mary the Queen Childrens Choir of the Immaculate Concepcion Parish in Cubao, under the baton of Maria Theresa Vizconde Roldan and her husband Jude B. Roldan won first place in the Childrens Choir of the World title in this years Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in United Kingdom. According to a DZMM article, their moving performance, received not just a standing ovation, but also the longest applause from the international audience. This feat becomes even more awe-inspiring with the fact that the choir is composed of very young members of only about 7-17 years old. This for us in the Ateneo Junior High School becomes a testament to her strength not just as a choir master but as an effective teacher to our young students.

MILAGROS M. LUCAS --- A BIG HEART FOR THE AGS COMMUNITY

Whats in a name? Milagros Mila Malcampo Lucas was born on September 8, the birthday of Our Blessed Virgin Mary. As I recall in our conversations, that was why her parents decided to give her the name Milagros, this was in honor of our Mother Mary. What can I say about one of this years recipients of the prestigious Rev. Henry Lee Irwin, SJ award? Please allow me to share with you a few things about her. Boss Mila would jokingly be called as the forever OIC because of her expertise and credibility as well as the magnanimity of her heart, passion for teaching and her obedience to her mission. Every time a Primary School coordinator would take a maternity leave (study leave or leave due to prolonged sickness), she would always be there to be the OIC. During relief operations in school, she would be one of those who would volunteer packing goods. She is a regular volunteer of ACED, Synergeia and teacher training in Bukidnon. If she has LEAP students, she would ask her GLC to give her only one or two students so she could focus on them more closely and teach them better. Teaching for her is not work but a mission that she is passionate about. She willingly sacrifices and gives her time even on holidays and weekends. Being the daughter of an Ozanam awardee, Dr. Jose Lucas and the younger sibling of Fr. Jesus M. Lucas, SJ, is it any wonder that she is such? Thanks for your generosity and Magis spirit, Mila!

WORLD SCOUT EDUCATION CONGRESS

Mr. Ariel Tamayo, Ateneo Junior High School Grade 8 class moderator, participated in a cross continental exchange of views on scouting organized by the Worldwide Movement of Scouting from November 22-24 in Hong Kong. Representing the AJHS and the Quezon City Council of Scouts, Mr. Tamayo was joined by more than 2000 other scouts from all corners of the globe to participate in the first ever World Scout Education Congress, which was held in the Hong Kong Scout Centre. The central theme of the congress, Scouting: Education for Life. What kind of education, what kind of life?, became the backdrop for the participants to share best practices and project themselves into the future of this centuries- old movement.

with a degree in Language StudiesFilipino and Tagalog in University of California San Diego (UCSD). She got a Fullbright Scholarship to study Filipino in the Philippines. Through the University of Californiass Education Abroad Program, she was able to study Panitikang Pilipino and Sociology at UP Diliman. After college, she did development work in the Philippines. Then she returned to the US and worked at Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA), an organization based in Historic Filipinotown Los Angeles and provides health services and cultural preservation projects. In 2006, she was one of the first 18 to be given a professional license to teach the Filipino Language. She has published several major works including Isang Pagaaral Tungkol sa Epekto ng Bilingwalismo sa Pakikipagtalastasan ng Ilang Pilipino (A Study about the Effect of Bilingualism in the Communication of Filipinos) in a University of Michigan Journal. She has given talks on Filipino Language and Culture in different parts of the U.S. and, more recently, in the Philippines. During that conference held in Manila, she was with fellow Filipino advocates from Malaysia, Japan, and Hawaii. The Filipino language is as global as the Filipino was one of the messages in that seminar. She was very happy then because: My greatest joy is being able to get to know another persons story and experience with the help of knowing how to speak, read, write, and understand Filipino. Before, when people would ask me Marunong ka bang mag-Filipino? I would often just shake my head and the conversation would end shortly after. Now, I can say, Opo, marunong po, pero nahihiya pa rin! Then, the other person will continue with the conversation in Filipino, and well share beautiful stories and many laughs. And shes keeping at it. Shes presently doing graduate studies on Dual Language Development in Education at Cal State University Long Beach. She says she dreams of starting Filipino language schools and programs in Los Angeles. She already started a pilot class in Filipino Language and Culture at the Los Angeles School of Global Studies. I asked her what she would say to Filipino students and she replied: View the Filipino language as a beautiful asset! There are many Filipinos born in America who wish they had Filipino language classes in schools. Napakahalaga ang pambansang wika natin. It is a beautiful language which will continue to open doors for you and for others. Do not be embarassed by any type of accent we were all created uniquely and in Gods image. Take any opportunity you can to commend each other for speaking Filipino. Often, we see younger generations getting praised for speaking English, but if they hear positive atittudes towards Filipino, then it can help others become more proud of being Filipino. Mabuhay ang wikang Filipino! Recently, Ivy showed up in my Facebook timeline. She greeted her fiance a happy birthday, mahal. A good definition of language of the heart would beit is the language you use to give names to those you love the most. If so, then I know what Ivys is.

LANGUAGE OF THE HEART

Paolo Ven B. Paculan She graduated with a degree in Sociology and Filipino-Tagalog Language Studies with a minor in Philippine Studies. She was a volunteer in Madapdap, Pampanga, where toxic waste victims suffer from conditions such as congenital heart disease, lukemia, and cerebral palsy. She uses Tagalog to help people get access to government services. And shes from California. Imagine a cousin of yours, the one who was born in the U.S. Your tito and tita migrated before both of you were born. Theyre in California or one of a hundred places outside the Philippines where Filipinos are a thriving community. Shes your Facebook friend but youve only met a few times face-to-face. You call her ate. She looks just like you. And she sounds just like you. Thats how I would introduce Ivy Dulay. I met Ivy at the 3rd International Conference for Filipino as a Global Language held in Manila last August 3-5, 2012. She gave a talk on how Tagalog is the 3rd most commonly spoken language in America besides English, on how Filipino-Americans yearned to connect with their heritage language, and on what she and other Filipino-language advocates were doing to fill that need. She recalled how she once didnt care about learning Filipino since proficiency in English was what schools required and rewarded. But her attitude changed for a very Filipino reasonher family. I grew up thinking that I was American, and that my family was American, and we were the same as everyone else, relates Ivy. But then I witnessed a family member being denied services because she spoke with an accent. She also remembers her father and how I would have been closer to him if I had learned his native language. So when she found out that Filipino was being taught in her college, she jumped at the opportunity. And from there her passion grew. She would eventually be the first person to graduate

Zeth Medina placed 2nd in IBONs Essay Contest
Mr. Pen Medina Super proud of my youngest son, Zeth Medina, who placed 2nd in an Inter-school On-TheSpot Essay Writing Contest today which had for its theme the rekindling of Andres Bonifacios nationalism among the youth of today. The contest was organized by the IBON Foundation, ACT Philippines and the Department of Education-NCR, and supported by the National Historical Institute. When Zeth left this morning, he begged us not to go to the venue for moral support because he didnt need more pressure. Throughout the day, Miss Ella Mara Perez, his mega supportive adviser, provided us with a rundown of the proceedings through text messages except for the results in the afternoon. Zeth had asked her not to text us the outcome. And when we picked him at the Ateneo and saw him running happily towards us we knew it was good news. He blurted out, I won 2nd place!!! and waved the silver medal at us and handed us an envelope saying, I also won 5,000 pesos. Its my early Christmas gift for you, guys! We controlled our tears. I thought that was dramatic enough but when we got home, he cried and hugged us and said, Thank you, guys. Youre the best parents. Thank you, dad, for your patience and guidance. Thank you, mom, for pushing me to be the best that I can be. This time we couldnt hold back our tears anymore. So the three of us cried together in extreme happiness! This is because a couple of days ago, he nearly backed out of the competition - he thought he wasnt good enough for it and was scared he would disappoint his classmates. Now he is so ecstatic talking about loving life and being more confident of himself and his talents and couldnt wait for Monday to see his classmates! Thank you very much, Ms. Perez! The Winning essay of Zeth Medina:

Revolution, Education and Love for Nation

The love for God is the love for our country and the love for others. - Andres Bonifacio Many have said that the children of a country are its future and hope since chidren really have the potential to learn and do things by themselves. But one thing children cannot grasp that much is the concept of nationalism. So others have been trying to educate the children of today about the importance of nationalism and how other people in the past have done it already, but none can compare to the outstanding nationalism of Andres Bonifacio. He cared for and loved his country a lot that it even went to the point where he started a revolution against the Spaniards in hopes that someday, the Philippines would be free from Spain and have an unabusive government but his life was taken away before he could see a new Philippines, one that would succeed in being independent. However, either if Bonifacio may be dead or alive today, we still have young Filipinos who are ready to fight for the rights of their country and will defend the Philippines with all their hearts. Bonifacio has also read some books which inspired him to start the revolution and wrote some letters himself out of love for his country and appears to be some kind of intellect aside from being a brave Filipino. Our children of today should be educated about this so that they may know about Andres Bonifacio and his good deeds done for his country and may also be enlightened to look up to him as a role model and possibly copy his nationalism for the Philippines in this modern world. Through being educated about Bonifacio and his actions done, the importance of nationalism will always be known by the generations to come and it will be still alive even after that. Another possible way for Bonifacios nationalism to be remembered aside from educating the children about it, is by doing acts out of love for our country, ranging from starting a complicated revolution, to things as simple as sharing to others how you feel about the state of our country and how much you care for it. We can express in any way how much we love our country and through this and keeping up this action, this is also another way of keeping nationalism alive. Now, as Ive mentioned, Bonifacio is a great person and will always be remembered through his actions but the young children of today must learn from what hes done and written but no one has done this quite yet. I am now writing this essay to you, dear reader, in hopes that one day, someone, anyone, will rise up and start a revolution, make the country change for the better, and follow in The Supremos footsteps because of their love for their (photo by Mr. Bob Geraldez) country.

Letter of Endorsement

Two Educators focus on Global Education
Jose Salvador, Head for Student Affairs and Formation joined Ateneo High School Principal Gabriel Mallillin, in a one week overseas conference in Honolulu Hawaii last July 27. The conference was held at Punahou Schoola school whose prominent roster of alumni include American President Barack Obama. Spearheaded by the schools Wo Center for International Studies, the conference manged to bring together several countries across the globe representing various school systems. This gathering of a global community of educators enabled them to spend time in shared inquiry about global education and to design learning environments that they could apply in their home schools. Many of the sessions were designed around challenging paradigms and offering alternatives that are more product- based , student centric and global in its thrust. These sessions were complimented by hands on experiences with an international contingent of Junior High School and High School Students who simultaneously were in attendance for a workshop. The teacher- participants were given occasions to facilitate sessions with them and at the same time gather their thoughts on such global issues like food and the environment. There was also an opportunity for educators to share ideas with one another. The Ateneo contingent had a chance to share with other teachers about the struggle for our national identity, given the diaspora of Filipinos in search of a better life outside. In the end, the opportunity given to the two educators from Ateneo could not have been any more timely than this. Their return home, on the month that the Philippines commemorates its annual Buwan ng Wika ( Language and Heritage Month ) affirmed the pervasive view that global education is never just a process of going out but a looking in and reflecting more deeply on that which defines who we are as a people.

(The participants came from all over the globe : China, Japan, Denmark, New Zealand, UK, India, Scotland, Philippines)

(The teachers seemed moved by the learning session on the Philippines)

Grade 3 Cafeteria Orientation
7:30 am, Thursday, June 6, 2013 The Grade 3 students eagerly lined up and waited for their turn to go to the Cafeteria for the orientation. This orientation was to prepare the students for another FIRST Activity they will have in Grade 3 which is eating lunch in school. They had to be familiarized with cafeteria routines and their table assignments. The students were guided in choosing dishes for their meal. The orientation was also a good opportunity to push the CLAYGO campaign of the school. The students were directed to the Segregation Area for their used plates and utensils. It was truly a learning experience for the students. Happy Lunch Time, Grade 3 Students!

HIGH HOPES, HIGH EXPECTATIONS

Reinell Bleu Ladera High Hopes, High Expectations. These were the words that burst out from the Officer-in-Charges mouth, Mrs.Carmela C. Oracion , which challenged the pioneering batch of the Ateneo Junior High School 2013-2014. Last June 5, 2013, which was also the first day of classes in AJHS, an orientation was conducted to inform and orient the new students of AJHS regarding the changes which they need to cope with and the challenges they are about to face within the entire school year. Mrs. Santos, the grade 7 Coordinator and Mrs. Castaeda, the Grade 8 Coordinator first welcomed the new students and opened officially the orientation. They declared the speakers of the event which were Mr. Salvador, the Student Affairs Head, Mrs. Arespacochaga, the Academic Affairs Head and Mrs. Carmela C. Oracion, the Officer-In-Charge in AJHS. Mr. Salvador first conquered the stage. He tackled all about introducing the Junior High School and distinguishing the differences between the Grade School, Junior High School and Senior High School. He commenced his speech with a very pleasant voice. He said that we are very lucky because we are the prime batch of AJHS, which was brought by the immediate implementation of K-12 Curriculum. However, we also have responsibilities to do such as adjusting to the environment, grading system, uniform, surroundings etc. Mr. Salvador said that every decision we make and every step we take are graded, as opposed to the usual system that assignments, recitations, and seatworks were not part of the class standing. The uniforms were copied from the High Schools uniform style. But even though were technically high school students, our environment is located at the Ateneo Grade School, for the reason that there is no sufficient amount of space that the AJHS could occupy. This situation is just temporary or tentative only and will hopefully last in three years.

Back to School
Jacob Francis G. Meimban Were you so scared of going back to school that you felt like fainting just thinking about it? As you counted down the days of your freedom, did you feel trepidation at the thought of walking down the halls of the Ateneo Grade School [AGS] for a year? Fear not my friends, school is actually cool! Phineas and Ferb were wrong when they said that school interrupts summer fun because school is exciting, exhilarating and a fun-filled adventure in itself. First of all, there are groundbreaking changes in the AGS this year under a program called K-12. When we finished school in March last school year, my classmates and I were Grade 3; but when we entered school this June, we are Grade 5! Its like we skipped a whole grade! Not only that, the Middle School now consists of just Grades 5 and 6, then we proceed to Junior High School. Whatever grade you are in, after the tons of homework and quizzes, you must be looking forward to new and exciting events in CO-CA, Intramurals especially with the introduction of handball, and the Salu-Salo. I am sure that other students like me feel that the CO-CA and Intramurals are cool activities that drive away the stress from academic demands. I cant wait to experience all the exciting events still to come for the school year!

Schola Brevis
Angelico Garcia & Noel Gamolo Schola Brevis is the first week of school, it came from the Latin words schola (school), and brevis (brave). This is the week where you will see your new section and new classmates. This week is for the class moderators of each section to explain the rules and regulations of the school. The class moderators will introduce themselves to their students and vice versa. The students will also meet their subject teachers and get a way to know others more. Both the teachers and students will have activities to know each other better like telling your unique abilities and traits that are different from other people and things others cant do which you want to share with other people. The best part is when the students will share their experiences during summer and explain why it was their favorite event in their summer time. The class moderator will tell the students what will happen during the year and the differences of it to the previous years. He/She will introduce the year for his/her students so less problems will come for everyone and they will have a fun year. This is also the time for students to ask questions and things they dont understand to start the year right.

AGS BULLYING PREVENTION CAMPAIGN FEATURED IN TV PATROL

Schools gears up for Anti-Bullying Act and prepares various programs to prevent bullying in campus. The Ateneo Grade School came up with a Bullying Prevention Campaign pamphlet which was distributed to the students during the first week of classes. The pamphlet was featured in TV Patrol last June 7, 2013, Friday from the report of Ms. Doris Bigornia. You may check-out the video at http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/ video/lifestyle/06/07/13/schools-gear-anti-bullying-act

AntiBullying Campaign
Lucas Yumul and Javi Dalupan The Anti-bullying campaign is very helpful in our campus and everywhere else. It is helpful because this program helps students who are bullied to be protected. The Anti bullying campaign stops the bullies and forms them into wise gentlemen. Students, Faculty and Administrators thought of many different ways on how to prevent bullying throughout the campus. One of the best ways is to be an active peacekeeper in your school, specifically here in the Ateneo. Its also good that President Aquino wrote a new law that against bullying. We also thought, why not make friends with the bully? Through this, the bully and the bullied can be friends and learn friendship. We have experienced bullying before and it is not right for other people to do this to others. It is very important then that everyone in the community is made aware of this issue and how we as individuals can help solve it.

AJHS begins 2014 in celebration of the Feast of Sto Nino

The Ateneo Junior High School students had their very first batch liturgical celebration this 2014 with the Feast day of the Sto Nino. Presiding over the mass was a relatively newly ordianed priest who is not a stranger to basic education. Albay native Fr Roy Cenon Ragas SJ whose prior assignment was East Timor was once a Math Teacher at the Ateneo High School. His homily , which took the for of a modern day parable about how faith changes ones perspectives was easy to the ears of our Junior High School boys because it was a story that was very well delivered . Before the Mass attendees moved back to their rooms after the mass, Mrs Carmela C Oracion took the podium to thank those who organized the very first mass of the year . She also left some points for reflection for the students to think about throughout the day, emanating from the engaging homily that Fr Roy delivered.

Encounter with Jesuits

Matthew Dela Cruz and Enzo Antonio Whats life like being a Jesuit? That question was answered throughout the memorable experience in the Encounter with the Jesuits. In this particular occasion, we learn the hardships and enjoyment of being a Jesuit. The experience was remarkably touching in some way, that it even let our minds touch the proposal of laying our life to Jesus. If they were trying to inspire us, we can assure you guys it worked. Straight to the point; our guest talked about his life-changing experiences with us and the steps to become a Jesuit. Most importantly, he shared how he arrived at his final decision of becoming a Jesuit. Of course, he also answered our questions. On our most honest opinions, me and Enzo really think this was a very unique and touching experience. We really think this experience was really important on our Christian Development. We completely look forward for the next time it happens.

The Grade 6 Recollection
Kiel Llaga This years recollection is a very anticipated one. This event happened in the Ateneo Grade school. There were lots of activities like the Mass, reflection time, and more. It was a very peaceful occasion where students interacted with God and talked to him. We learned lots of things like prayers and how God is in everything from our Recollection Guide, Ms. Perez. We would always remember this recollection as a very fruitful religious encounter. This event gave us the chance to talk to the Lord and God himself. There were times when we had the chance to talk with our friends and times when we were allowed to draw and write about things. And then we meditated peacefully and quietly. At the mass, we prayed reverently, sang songs and had communion. When the mass and recollection had ended, we went home proudly and joyfully. Overall, this recollection was one of the best I have experienced. Now, I pray more reverently, reflect more often, learned a lot of things and finally do better in class because I have found God in all things. This recollection is truly a great event this school year.

The Grade 5 Recollection

Paolo L. Cruz It is in the middle of June when most Grade 5 students have their first recollection. What is a recollection you might ask? Its a time to rest from your daily schedule and dedicate yourself to praying and spending time with God, instead of playing Minecraft and using gadgets. Its also a time to recollect old memories. Grade 5 students went to school on a Saturday, going to their assigned venues to proceed with the Recollection. There were activities such as playing an ice breaker entitled Would You Be My Friend? We also did a reflection, a scripture reading, and was able to see a video and PowerPoint presentation. It felt like I was with the Holy Trinity (God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit) the whole time. My heart was learning, recollecting and realizing more than I knew and what I forgot. My fellow classmates felt the same as I. The Celebration of the Holy Mass was the last activity of the Recollection. Fr. Unson was our presider with 3 students who were chosen to recite the First Reading, Second Reading and the Responsorial Psalm. Fr. Unson gave a Homily which really defined the Gospels every word. The Communion Rite was the time I really felt Jesus presence. I went home like I literally saw and talked with the Holy Trinity. This was one of the best times with Jesus.

ENVIRONMeNT WeeK
in AGS by Luke Amoncio and David Cruz The Environment Week was celebrated last July 8-12, 2013. As we know, a couple of weeks ago we celebrated Environment Week. We kicked off with a speaker telling us some environmental facts and stories during flag ceremony. We wore environmental shirts for the Environment Week contest. We also practiced reduce, reuse and recycle even more actively, sorting our trash into the appropriate trash bins. The cafeteria served healthy food and beverages like fruit shakes and vegetables. During lunch and recess, we paid extra particular attention to the practice of CLAYGO and BYOB. We capped the week off with some high fives for a successful celebration! in AJHS by James Santos and Gabriel Micael Abangan Essentially, Environment Week raises awareness on the damages that people are doing to the environment. People are accountable to the effects of climate change that are being experienced in all parts of the world. These include massive flooding and drought that bring death and suffering to many. Environment Week tells us that it is never too late to do something to reduce these damages. It is about teaching people how to help the environment every day of the week. Tips were given on how to help reduce environment footprint such as: eat less beef and pork eat out at restaurants less eat fewer dairy products drink fewer soft drinks eat more fruits and vegetables drink less bottled water eat less packaged food and junk food walk to the local farmer market or grocery store upgrade to energy efficient refrigerator eat wild fish which are not endangered Advice was also given on where to throw trash in the proper trash bin. This will guide new students and the new grade 1 students (previously prep) on proper waste disposal. As students were also told where food waste are sent, we realized that Environment Week is associated to the subject science. It is really amazing to learn about African night crawlers, the earthworms that eat the food waste and their feces turn to fertilizer that revitalizes the soil. Imagine, such small creatures are actually doing something to help the environment. This makes us think. What about us? We are supposed to be the more intelligent creature. Unlike the earthworms, we have arms and legs and brains that make us do more and create more. Unfortunately, we use these advantages for our gain without thinking about the damages we bring to the environment. So every time we cut trees to build condominiums, every time we throw a small piece of candy wrapper outside our car to keep it clean, every time we use plastic bags for our convenience, we should think first. We should remember the African night crawlers. We ask ourselves, are they more evolved than us?

Thomas Bersamira & Gonzalo Viray Class Night is a memorable moment in a students life because we get to bond with our classmates and teachers overnight. This years Class Night was held last August 30, 2013 and is entitled Gilas Night. Ms. Perez coined the term which simply means Grade sIx cLASs NIGHT. Before the start of the actual Class Night, each team practiced their dance for the night. After rehearsal, the students gave their bags to their fetchers to bring home. Then the students can either go on inflatables, play basketball, or swim in the pool. After a while the students had dinner. When the program started, the students were required to participate with their sections in the games and team presentations. Then, the boys went back to their classrooms and they can had fun with their class adviser until 12 midnight. Some classes even went around the campus for ghost hunting. When the students woke up the next they, they started packing their things to prepare to leave. But they would never forget the memories they shared with their classmates during this Class Night.

GENYO: What It Can Do for Us
GenYo is an online resource which can help students learn things and help us in our studies outside of school. It was created in 2011, but was only used in our Grade Level recently and is in partnership with Marshall Cavendish, the company who made our books in Math. Many Filipino private schools have adopted this online program, and Ateneo is one of them. GenYo offers five different subjects: English, Science, Araling Panlipunan, Math and Filipino. These subjects offer different activities like games, videos, quizzes and more, to test your knowledge of the lesson. Teachers can also access these activities and may also access the students profile to see their progress in the subject. Since GenYo is active 24/7, teachers and students can access it anytime, anywhere. GenYo has become a big help in our school ever since it was implemented. Students now experience another way to accomplish their schoolwork and homework since GenYo makes everything much more convenient and fun! GenYo has also made teaching easier and more exciting. So, lets stick to that! (photo by Mr. JR Forteza)

International Day of Peace

The United Nations mandated that the 21st of September of every year is the International Day of Peace. Hence, the Araling Panlipunan Department, led by the Subject Area Coordinator, Mrs. Emelyn Somera, spearheaded this celebration through a momentous one minute silence and a recitation of a prayer for peace. Everyone in school also wore shirts with positive messages or peace symbols. In the AP classes of Grade 6, Mrs. Helen Amante, Ms. Tin Marcelino and Ms. Ella Perez taught their students how to make a Peace Crane after telling a story about the girl who was victimized by a World War II atomic bomb and sincerely prayed for World Peace. Folding the peace paper crane is a complicated task and truly requires patience. So, the AP teachers were really proud of their students after they completed their origami cranes. The young gentlemen also wrote their personal prayers for peace on the crane and hung them at their classroom windows to remind them of the importance of peace.

Mr. Salvador Unveils the New AJHS CoCA Grading System

Paolo Murga and Thomas Oh Last September 11, 2013, Mr. Salvador, the Assistant Principal for Student Affairs of the Ateneo Junior High School and a former club moderator himself, visited the various Co-Curricular Activity (COCA) venues in order to reveal the new grading system for COCA and to introduce the new Portfolio Method for school use. The Portfolio Method, as explained by Mr. Salvador, is a flexible studentcentered approach for both students and teachers to use to gather more data for evaluating, improving and even grading, the students performance. Aside from the simple letter mark given after each quarter to denote the students general proficiency in his chosen COCA, the Portfolio Method will give parents a chance to be better informed since it will display their sons actual works, which can reveal in greater detail his personality and special skills compared to just a letter mark. The Portfolio Method is flexible and student-centered because it will allow the student to input basically anything about himself, whether its his past accomplishments, awards, reflections, goals, personal info, pictures, experiences, a diary written articles, and the like. In fact, some students already have their own personal portfolios at home. As mentioned by Mr. Salvador, the students are encouraged to include information or material on those who helped in their journey in school such as their parents, teachers, idols, friends, classmates, etc, and even challenges or low points to complete their chronicled adventure. Mr. Salvador also emphasized the use of the portfolio as a time capsule or a way to look back to ones humble beginnings. He narrated a story about a former student of his in the Arts and Crafts Club who is now known as a professional artist and the creator of the Foldabots franchise, Jomike Tejido, who once amazed some fans with some things he had created in his younger years. He stressed that when we students grow-up and graduate, people wont be interested for our grades, but for our personalities; the portfolio will represent ones personality. Currently, those who are handling COCA are considering whether they should have students use E-Portfolios or folders. Mr. Salvador also stated that it would be useful to introduce various forms of media to the portfolio, and that there are many ways of formatting it. Pictures could be useful, along with reflections or life lessons. The portfolios could also be in a form of a journal, wherein people can write their thoughts and ideas about their personal lives. The portfolio could also be used to reevaluate oneself, if there had been progress throughout the weeks, months, or years. Mr. Salvador also said that when applying for a job, they wont be interested in grades alone. He mentioned that the employers will want to know who you are; thus, having an organized portfolio to present to them would mean a greater opportunity for employment. Let us pray that this new system will help us openly express ourselves, and our own talents, in COCA. Source: Orientation from Mr. Johnny Salvador in Computer Lab C (EAGLET Venue)

THE AJHS COCA PORTFOLIO

Mr. Jonny Salvador What , no coca marks for the first quarter for AJHS ? may be a likely response to those who will receive the report cards this Parent - Teacher Meet-Up week. Lest , we start entertaining thoughts that there may have been a lapse in the grading or worse, that the coca moderators felt that their members did not deserve a grade, you can be assured that the reason is far more justified that this. The view of gradually shifting to a more relevant grading system for COCAs was idea long being considered given the very multifaceted ( as opposed to linear ) nature of COCAs. To add to this, the desire for the moderators to actually evaluate students more comprehensively, has often been constrained by the limited number of meetings in a quarter. This is most especially true for the first quarter where interruptions due to inclement weather are commonplace. Given these two compelling reasons, the AJHS is shifting to a semestral COCA grading system rather than quarterly grading system. And in place of the usual letter grades, the COCA program will be slowly introducing the COCA Portfolio system . Student Portfolios are areas where students can showcase their work in a club, display their personal photos or essays, and chronicle their growth. Moreover, the portfolio approach will encourage greater collaboration with team mates, teachers and parents. Hopefully this portfolio would be able provide a more holistic view of the students as a member of a club rather than a simplistic letter mark that does little in the way of acknowledging each students uniqueness. The moderators have started guiding our students through making portfolios and once the so called finished products are available, youll be the first to know .

PARENT & SON GROUP BUILD AND CONTEST HOBBYCRAFT DAY

Last Oct 19, 2013, the Hobbycraft Club of AGS (for Grades 4,5,6,7,8) hosted a whole day event where parent and son had the opportunity to learn from members of the IPMS (International Plastic Modelers Society) the basics of building and painting a scale model . My son (Basti T. Medel, 5-Bagobo) had been looking forward to that event so he prepared days in advance for all his tools and materials that he would use for that day, including his partly assembled 1/35 scale model tank German Pz.Kpfm KV-2 754 (r). In the first part of the program, the expert hobbyists shared with us the techniques on performing the a thin layer of base paint of dessert yellow onto the tank. Then he showed how camouflage colors like olive drab and red brown were used. Then how the finishing techniques like washing using black paint, and dry brush using silver paint were applied to give the shadow, aging, rusty, and steel effects. The tank was actually painted using air brush throughout, while for the washing and dry brush techniques, cotton buds and thin brush were used, respectively. Throughout the session, it was my son who was doing the actual painting while I was only there beside him to do the demo again, and coached him throughout when he was getting out of hand, for instance, when too much paint was applied on one area, or when the handling of the spray paint was not correct (in terms of distance to the tank and angle of spray) or when camouflage color was lacking in certain areas. I was also his critique where I made sure I give my comments every step of the way. As soon as we finished, Basti submitted his work. His tank, together with the tanks of the other Grade 5 boys, were lined up in one row for judging. My son and I were restless. We didnt have any idea if his work had a chance of getting a prize because all the works of the Grade 5 students were awesome. Then the awarding came, the third prize was called, then the second as we were waiting for the first prize winner, I was looking at him from afar, giving him my assurance that everything would be ok even if he didnt win and that his work was already a masterpiece an artwork that one can be proud of. To our delight and surprise, his name was called for the first prize award!!! We were both jumping with joy and could not believe at all, that his work bested the other grade 5 works I was so proud of him, I see the joy in his face when he received the first prize trophy and award. At the end of the program, together with his mom, we went home very happy. It was a wonderful bonding experience with my son-- a fun and memorable day for both of us. We both learned a lot from the event. We went to SM Marikina where I treated him to KFC for a job well done! I am so proud of my son!

The AJHS CoCA Orientation:

The Heros Journey

Carl Chan and Nate Santos Last June 29, the first ever Co-Curricular Activity (CoCA) Orientation for the Junior High was held at the Irwin Theatre. Both Grades 7 and 8 attended the event. At the start of the assembly, a video was played comparing life in the Junior High to a typical adventure-a hero living a normal life until he discovers something, a quest, a mentor, the treasures, and the ever-present ups and downs. The teachers said that the AJHS experience was incomplete without failure. After the adventure, the hero returns home living a new life, but adventure calls again, repeating the cycle. After the speech, the usual video montage about all the clubs was played for the last time for the eighth graders and the second to the last time for the seventh graders. Several of the video segments were the ones from before while others were new. Some memorable moments sprang from this part of the assembly. One such moment was when nearly the entire student audience echoed each time the montage enumerated the clubs. When the clip showed Michael Jordan, most of the audience cheered. The students kept laughing if they saw something funny in a video or two.

CoCA Changes in List , Orientation and Choices

Josh Guinto & Luis Orca The middle schools Co-Curricular Activity orientation has changed over the years in many different ways, but as a writer who has just entered the Middle School, it is amazing how there can be so many activities to choose from as an activity for the school year. Mrs. Gargaritano has even added new activities for us to enjoy. There are more clubs for us new entries into the Middle School, like Shadow Play, Football and Track & Field. We did not have these clubs back in the past like in Grade 3. This year, clubs are definitely more fun, more exciting. There are so many they will not even fit in this article. The clubs are more challenging and better with friends. And as amazing as it is, it is also very hard to pick a club with these many choices. But whichever you have chosen, being in a club that you have never been to before will give you many chances of learning, making new friends and experiencing the uncommon. More and more students are now satisfied with their clubs that they are in. No more clubs will be overloaded and teachers can relax a little making sure everyone has a good time in their Co-Curricular Activities.

Cardinal Tagle Opens Annual AGS AJHS Fiesta

Paeng Evangelista The recently held Feast of the Holy Guardian Angel of the Ateneo de Manila Grade School and Junior High School was not just a day of fun and games for the boys, but also a day of lending a generous hand. Proceeds of the feast will go to the Social Action Fund, which funds the projects of the Bigay Puso program. During the fair, the Celebration of the Holy Eucharist at the Blue Eagle Gym was presided over by His eminence Cardinal Chito Tagle. After the mass, he also blessed the Heritage Room which housed an exhibit in line with the Year of Faith. The three-day fair also featured a magic show, singing competition, lego-making contest, and a musical variety show. The theme this year, Arangkada Atenista, Diyos, at Pamilya calls on Ateneans to boldly go and proceed. Unlike the previous years where students named the theme of the fair, it became a contest for the family of the students. The annual fiesta is a commemoration of the Holy Guardian Angels, patron of the Ateneo de Manila Grade School.

St. Ignatius Mass, Induction of AGSCOM & Class Officers

Sean Gayod, Miguel Cadag & Raj Tamayo The Mass of St. Ignatius and Induction of Class Officers happened last July 30, 2013. The backdrop was made by Grade 6 students. The induction happened, as usual towards the end of the mass. This time Grades 4, 5 and 6 together with the Junior High School attended the Mass and Induction Ceremonies. Some of the Class Officers parents were also in attendance, seemingly very proud of their sons who would be inducted to serve their fellow Ateneans for the rest of the school year. The Ateneo Boys Choir and Knights of Christ were a big part of the mass. But, most of all it was the effort of the faculty, staff and priest presider which made the mass very meaningful. The mass was mostly about who St. Ignatius was, why he is our patron Saint and what the Ignatian Spirit is all about; and Magis is not just about being the best among the rest, but simply being the best you can be as a person. The Class Officers hope to be able to live by this since they took an oath that tells all of their classmates and fellow students that they will ensure that they will do their responsibilities and promises that they have told they would do. They also promised that they would do something about the issues that the school is facing. They were voted and trusted by the students of the Ateneo Grade School. The Junior High School and the Middle School of the AGS both helped each other to make a good and responsible AGSCOM Council and Class Officers. The Induction of the AGSCOM and Class Officers is not only to take an oath but it is also important so the students of the AGS can gain more trust and belief to the AGSCOM and the officers.

We have been asked many times how life is like as an AGSCOM Executive Council member. A lot of people feel that the task is very hard especially because we are the first Executive Council members who are in Grade 6. Our answer to that question is: NO! It is not hard to do things you really love. Even though we may have so much work to do, we still love what we do. As Executive Council members, we constantly face challenges like balancing our schedules, keeping our grades up and the like. But, if you look challenge in the eye, you will know that you can face him/it/her/whatever. Life is never easy, but we could always make the most of it like were going to die young. For our various projects, we have too many of them to count. However, we must think and make time for these because they are for the benefit of all. Being the two first Executive Council members of Grade 6 is the pressure of pleasing our big brothers in the JHS and our fellow students from the MS. Lastly, one of our biggest hills to climb or the widest sea to cross or the vastest land to conquer is to fulfill our duties for the Greater Glory of God. Remember this: we have to make sacrifices in our lives like: writing this article. For our younger brothers and batchmates, we would like you to carry around this information in your mind about our lives as Executive Council members so that if you decide to become a student leader in the future, you will remember these two young gentlemen who strived hard to achieve their goal. For our older brothers, we would like you to know that we Executive Council members from Grade 6 are working hard to fulfill our duties for the benefit of our school.

Miting de Avance, AGSCOM Campaign

Jag Delfin The Miting de Avance and the AGSCOM campaign this school year have been great and fun. The Miting de Avance helped the Middle School students of Ateneo know who to vote for. During this event, the two parties (Men of Steel and A-Clean) worked hard to convince the audience to vote for them and not the others. The campaign came right after. This is when the candidates try to make the people want to vote for them more. The main objectives of the parties are the same: get people to vote for them and by winning, eventually be of service to the student body. They tried signs, cheers, and flags to win the hearts of their schoolmates. They made promises that they would do if they win the election. They made speeches that inspired people to voting for them. This is basically what they did in the Miting de Avance and their campaign. In this campaign, the power isnt really with the candidates but really with the people and their final decision during the elections.

AGS CELEBRATES NATIONAL BOOK WEEK
Paeng Evangelista The Ateneo de Manila Grade School observed the National Book Week with a circus themed celebration entitled, Come one, Come All! With reading we soar that aims to promote reading. Katigbak Educational Media Center (KEMC) Coordinator Pam Albaa said that the week-long celebration was all about fun and at the same time inculcating the value of reading to the students. The KEMC prepared a number of activities which range from exhibits, contests, trivia games, and classroomto-classroom visits. There were also activities like origami and foldabots making and a book fair that sold books from different publications. Albaa said that this year, they wanted to veer away from the serious classroom set-up and let the students enjoy reading and come to the library. Hopefully, they will adopt this habit eventually, she said. The KEMC also holds constantly a media instruction program once a month to teach the students appropriate to their grade level.

AGS & AJHS CELEBRATE ANNUAL BUWAN NG WIKA
Paeng Evangelista The Ateneo de Manila Grade School (AGS) and Junior High School (AJHS) recently celebrated the annual Buwan ng Wika with the theme Filipino Araw-Araw to encourage students to speak the national language on a daily basis. Filipino Coordinator of the Middle School Ms Maricar Kristin R. Panganiban said that they want to teach the kids to speak Filipino everyday and not just every August (Buwan ng Wika) because they are Filipinos, after all. Gustong iparating na hindi lang dapat tuwing Buwan ng Wika ginagamit ang wikang Filipino, ngunit dapat araw-araw dahil mga Filipino naman tayo., Panganiban said. The theme Filipino Araw-Araw was chosen by both the Grade School and the Junior High School according to the theme Wika sa Daang Matuwid provided by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF). During the month-long celebration, several activities were done in order to showcase the culture of the Filipinos: Pinto Filipino, Tanghal tanghalian, Pinoy ang dating, Parada ng Sikat, Bugso, etc. Popular Filipino festivals like the Higantes and traditions such as the marching band during fiestas were observed in the celebration. Filipino comic strips (in the form of a tarpaulin) were also posted around the campus of the AGS and the AJHS to introduce this popular Filipino form of literature during the time. It featured artists such as Larry Alcala who was dubbed as the Dean of Filipino Cartoonists and Manix Abrera whos Kikomachine comic strips are very popular today. According to Panganiban, it is the objective of the Filipino Department in the Middle School for kids to like the Filipino language. This is due to the fact that most students use English as their first language. Pangarap ng mga guro sa Filipino na sana ay hindi na kinakailangan magcelebrate ng Buwan ng Wika tuwing Agosto dahil dapat talaga, all throughout the year. Yun nga lang, dahil sa tipo ng paaralan na mayroon tayo, ang first language ng mga bata ay Ingles, she said. Currently, only 2 subjects are taught in the Grade School using Filipino as medium. These are Araling Panlipunan at Filipino.

Norberto Maria Bautista, S.J., our Headmaster, Mrs. Josephine Martinez, the Assistant Headmaster for Primary School, Ms. Remedios Rivera, the Assistant Headmaster for Formation, and Mr. Jervy Robles, the Assistant Headmaster for Student Affairs. The administrators were ably assisted by the Grade Two Grade Level Coordinator, Mrs. Maria Estrella Fatima Celestino and the Grade Two Academic Coordinator, Mrs. Guada Sol Barcelon. We were fortunate to have Ms. Remedios Rivera as our inspirational speaker. She talked about the importance of having time for God, time for self, and time for others. Time for others was made more concrete by the story of St. Martin and the beggar, which the boys listened to very attentively. Following the Honors Assembly was the launching of the Bigay Puso program. The presentation by Mrs. Celestino showed the boys how the coins they save and donate in the Bigay Puso can help feed children in their partner school, the Manuel L. Quezon Elementary School. Gr. 3 Honors' Assembly
It is a yearly tradition to celebrate the Honors Assembly at the beginning of the school year. The Honors Assembly recognizes outstanding students who have strived for excellence in the field of academics and sports. It helps to inspire all students to do magis in everything they do. For the students, recognizing their accomplishments helps them to appreciate more their own capabilities and potentials. This will equip them to be more responsible and competitive students. For this school year, the Honors Assembly was held at the Singson Hall last July 2 and 3, 2013. Ms. Sunshine Cantilang, Grade Level Coordinator, Mrs. Millette G. Balisi, Academic Coordinator, Mr. Jervy Robles, AHSA, Mrs. Josie Martinez AHAA-PS and Fr. Norberto Bautista, SJ, Headmaster, were all there to witness the assembly. Mrs. Ma. Ms. Mara Melanie D. Perez I am so inspired by the life of service and excellence of my angelic & brilliant student, Anton Cabalza. Hence, I made an introduction for him when he became our guest speaker during the Reading of Honors. This was read by Mrs. Castillo, our Grade Level Coordinator. START: Young gentlemen of Grade 6, as the graduating batch, I expect that you now know all the Jesuit mottos. Now, lets have a simple game. Who among you know how to play Whats the Word: 4 Pics 1 Word? To make this part of our program more exciting, I want you to participate in guessing the words. I will show you the pictures with letter clues and I will give you three seconds to think of the answer. The words are all in Latin. After I count to three, I expect all of you to say the answer. Is that clear? Alright, lets start. First word. I would like to start with that word to introduce our young guest speaker today. St. Ignatius inspires us to live the magis, to develop our individual capacities to its fullest. And like all our awardees here dressed in their gala uniform, our speaker also went up this stage every year for being a consistent honor studentFirst Honor student most of the time! And presently, he is a Junior student at the Philippine Science High School where he is also a consistent Directors Lister, truly living the magis in each and every subject. Now, lets go to the next pictures. Jesuit schools students are known for their excellence in communication skills, both in speaking and in writing, and also for their heightened intellectual formation. Our guest speaker, at a very young age is well known for his supremacy in reasoning reflectively and critically. During all his middle school years, he manifested his writing skills in The Eaglet, our official school paper, and served as the Editor-in-Chief when he was in Grade 7. He keeps winning several awards because of his excellence in speaking and writing. He is also the youngest winner in the Carlos Palanca Awards for Literature! Are you ready for Round 3? In English, it means a sound mind in a sound body. Our guest is one of the youngest Mensans whose IQ is in the top 2% of the population! But hes not contented in only developing his mental capacities. He is also a 10K runner, a certified scuba diver, and a karate medalist!

Ateneans are known as persons for others. Our guest speaker always look for ways to care and be of service to others. When he was in AGS, he tutored his classmates who were having difficulties in their academic subjects. He also actively participated in Gawad Kalinga and Bigay Puso projects. When he was in Grade 6, Metro Manila experienced the onslaught of the Typhoon Ondoy and their house was submerged in deep flood. But instead of wallowing in self pity, he was one of the first students who volunteered in the Task Force Ondoy to help other victims like him. He is also a man for the nation as part of the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting or PPCRV. In Philippine Science, he is presently very active in their Big Brother Sister Circle, which is like an elite organization for junior and senior students who act as Kuyas and Ates to the freshmen and sophomore students. Now, who among you here have pets? Our speaker doesnt stop in just caring for other people because he also cares for animals. But he doesnt just care for his own pets because he looks after other animals as well as part of the Junior Cadets Volunteer Program of the Philippine Animal Welfare Society or PAWS. I know you enjoy playing this game but were down to our last set of pictures. These words are inscribed on our school seal. Our speaker is the epitome of this Ignatian value Light in the Lord. As the President of all his 4 classes in Middle School and the Confedaration of Ateneo Middle School Publications, his classmates and clubmates look up to him for inspiration. He showed them the right path to success and holiness as the leading angelic and brilliant student of his batch. He also holds several leadership positions in Philippine Science High School. When he graduated in AGS, he received the Jordan Award not just because of his academic excellence, but also because of his outstanding social commitment and spiritual formation. Truly, he is one of the best graduates of Ateneo and were all in for a treat today. Without further ado, please join me in welcoming Master Anton Raphael S. Cabalza.

THE EAGLEt
You might expect me to talk about discipline or hard work or being responsible, but Id like to focus on a much simpler concept, one that weve all experienced: love. To explain what I mean by love, Id like to tell a story, the story of one Atenean just like you guys. Hes an avid fan of the NBA, he likes Iron Man, he plays Candy Crush and cant get past level 147. The only thing unique about this Atenean was that he was pretty good at Math, and because of this, his school sent him to join some Math contests. There was one particular contest, the MMC, that he joined every year since Grade 1, but he never won a medal. He never even placed higher than 4th in Metro Manila. For 9 years, this Atenean joined the contest, but every year, he would fall short. He never stopped working, though, and he never stopped training, because he loved Math and he loved competition. Then, when this Atenean was in fourth year, he found out that he had an appointment at the same time as the contest. He would have to finish the test in one hour to make his appointment, while everyone else got two hours to do the test. Somehow, by the grace of God, this Atenean ended up winning the gold medal, not just in Metro Manila, but for the whole Philippines. After 10 years of losing and training, he finally broke through and became the national champion. All those years of staying after school, looking for new math problems to solve and losing to better people finally paid off. He won the biggest contest of his life, and it was his love for his work that led him to do it. It works for other aspects as well, not just academics or math. If you love playing basketball, then you dont mind all the hours of physical training and practice. If you love playing the guitar, then all the hours you spend practicing are worth it, even though your fingers may hurt afterwards. Work doesnt become work if you love what you do, because youre so happy to be doing it that you dont mind all the effort that goes into it. However, more importantly, this Atenean never, ever stopped praying. Before every contest, he prayed and asked God to give him the guidance to win. After every contest, he prayed, whether he won or lost. If he won, he thanked God for giving him the strength and the clarity of mind. If he lost, he thanked God for the opportunity and accepted Gods will. Before that particular MMC in 4th year, the Atenean prayed: Dear God, I know that Im at a disadvantage when it comes to time. I know you brought me to this situation, so I pray that you may give me the guidance to get through it. Lo and behold, he ended up winning, and he knew that the win was a blessing from God. He knew that God was responsible for his win, and he made sure to give thanks. Another thing Id like to emphasize is that you should never, ever let competition get in the way of friendship. In the Math world, all of the people IO compete with are my friends, and Im really close to a lot of them, even though they do beat me a lot of times. We all understand that were competing, but at the end of the day, were still friends. My best friend and I have been competing for 11 years. For 11 years, we were always rank 1 and 2

The Grade 5 Honors Assembly
Andrew Carcellar The Grade 5 Honors Assembly was held last July at the Singson Hall. It was about students who received honors in Grade 3. They were given certificates for first, second and third honors. Father Kit also made an inspiring speech. The honors were recognized when they went to the stage and received their certificates. Parents of the honors came to take videos and pictures of the honors. The honors were glad when they received their certificates. The students who did not receive honors promised to achieve more and receive honors this school year. Then, Mr. Lorenzo Gabriel Quiogue, an Ateneo Grade School Alumni, made a special speech to everyone to further inspire them. He also gave a great message to the audience. Everyone, especially the honors and their parents, were delighted and thankful for Gods blessings. in the batch, and we would always flip back and forth when it came to who was number 1 and who was number 2. In the end, when I became the valedictorian, he was one of the first people I hugged, because he was also the salutatorian. At the end of Iron Man 3, Tony Stark destroyed all of his suits. After he worked so hard on those suits, after he spent so much time and energy to build them, he destroyed them just like that. Why would he ruin something he devoted so much effort to? The answer is simple: because he realized what, or rather who, was truly important to him. He realized that above all, Pepper was the one who truly mattered, and he was willing to give up everything if it meant that he could be with her. His getting to be with her was that moment that made everything worth it. In the same way, we look for our own moment that makes everything worth it. Whether its seeing the proud look on our parents faces as we receive our awards, or seeing our name on that certificate, or even just being thanked by a classmate for helping him with a difficult assignment, we each have our own moments that make us remember why we worked so hard in the first place. As Fr. Pedro Arrupe says, Fall in love, stay in love, and it will decide everything. Whether you received an award today or not, know that your journey doesnt stop here. Like Tony Stark, we receive our own Clean Slate Protocol at the start of every year, and the start of every quarter. Keep fighting, because there will always, always be that one moment when everything becomes worth it. It may not come right away, but trust me, if you love what youre doing and you genuinely enjoy it, you will be rewarded, no matter how long it takes. I would know, because my moment only came after 10 years. And no matter how much you want something and how competitive you may get, I hope you never, ever lose your friendship with other people over a grade or a contest. Friendship is worth so much more than that. Above all, however, dont ever, ever forget to pray. Everything that happens, whether its a success or a failure, is a grace from God. He has a plan for all of us, and if He brings us to it, he will bring us through it. Once again, congratulations to all the awardees. Thank you and good morning.

Speech of Mr. Lorenzo Gabriel D. Quiogue

Ruby Sparks (2012)

Calvin, terrified, tries to get help from as many people as possible, but realizes, why not just go with it? He literally has the girl of his dreams, why let it go? He now tries to use the typewriter as few times as possible, and lives the dream of having the perfect girl. Whenever Calvin gets frustrated with Ruby though, he decides to use the typewriter sinfully. The extraordinary events that occur in Ruby Sparks are inexplicable. The film can make you feel every emotion possible, from joyful to vengeful, from depressing to uplifting. Big-time movies dont make one feel that way anymore; its usually focused on one emotion. Once again, its magic how this indie film can give much more feeling to a person more than a zillion-dollar movie can. Despite a few tropes, this movie is completely original. Thank you Zoe Kazan, both the screenwriter and the main actress of the story, for bringing me such a colorful movie.

What really catches someones mind is not only the wisdom in the story but in the posters, trailers, and such. The films main tagline, Shes out of his mind, represents the story so well. Ruby Sparks goes to show that love is magic, and there is nothing that it cannot do. Calvin Weir-Fields, a genius novelist that has written countless of hits, begins to create a new story to be published as soon as possible. Due to writers block, he does not know what to write, until he just figures out sooner that he needs to write about the dream he gets almost every night. A weird yet romantic dream about a girl he meets named Ruby Sparks. After typing a few sentences here and there on his manual typewriter, love finds its way to Calvin, but in a really different way. The girl he was writing about pops up in real life and has no clue about her being a part of a story Calvin wrote. What she just knows is that Calvin and she are in a strong and wealthy relationship.

Sherlock (BBC)
The main characters in this show are Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson, his partner. Sherlock is played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and Dr. John Watson is played by Martin Freeman. The show is very entertaining, having a lot of cliffhangers, and moments of suspense, keeping the viewers at their seats. The second season was released just last year, January 1. The episodes were A Scandal in Belgravia, The Hounds of Baskerville, and The Reichenbach Fall which left the fans wondering what has happened to Sherlock, making excited for the following season, which is scheduled to release this year or next year, 2014. I would rate this show 10/10 because of its amazing action scenes and Sherlocks observing and deducing skills. It has its share of its funny scenes, sad scenes, suspense scenes, and its scenes that make you furious at his enemies.

Sherlock is a British television crime drama that was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, and it shows the life of a modern Sherlock Holmes. The first season was aired in 2010. All of the episodes were 90 minutes long, or 1 hour and 30 minutes long. Each of them had a case which Sherlock then had to solve. He is amazing at observing and deducing, he can learn the history of a cellphone by just looking at its marks and cracks! Anyway, back to the show, the first three episodes, A Study in Pink, The Blind Banker, and The Great Game, he solves different cases in different ways, all very creatively. He observes thing a normal person cant, he can know where a person has been by looking and feeling his/her clothes if theyre wet or dry, and he can predict where they are going by the things they bring, or the type of clothes they wear.

PROFILE
Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio (December 17, 1936) is the 266th and the current Pope of the Catholic Church, a position also holding the roles of Sovereign Vatican City and the Bishop of Rome. Throughout his life, both as an individual and a religious leader, Bergoglio has been noted for his humility, his concern for the poor, and his commitment to dialogue as a way to build bridges between people of all backgrounds, beliefs, and faiths. Since his election to the papacy, he has displayed a simpler and less formal approach to the office, choosing to reside in the Vatican guesthouse rather than the papal residence. Born in Flores, a barrio of Buenos Aires, he was the eldest of five children of Mario Jose Bergoglio, an Italian immigrant accountant and his wife Regina Maria Sivori. Bergoglio studied at the archdiocesan seminary, Immaculada Concepcion Seminay in Villa Devoto, Buenos Aires and, after three years, entered the Society of Jesus as a novice on March 11, 1958. As a Jesuit novice he studied humanities in Santiago, Chile. At the conclusion of his novitiate in the Society of Jesus, Bergoglio officially became a Jesuit on March 12 1960, when he made the religious profession of the initial, temporary vows of a member of the order. In 1967, Bergoglio finished his theological studies and was ordained to priesthood on December 13, 1969 by Archbishop Ramon Jose Castellano. He attended the Philosophical and Theological Faculty of San Miguel, a seminary in San Miguel. He served as the master of novices for the province there and became a professor of theology. Bergoglio was named Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992 and was ordained on June 27, 1992 as Titular Bishop of Auca. On June 3 1997, Bergoglio was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Buenos Aires with the right of automatic succession. Upon the death of Archbishop Antonio Quarracino on February 28, 1998, Bergoglio became Metropolitan Archbishop of Buenos Aires. In that role, Bergoglio created new parishes and restructured the archdiocese administrative offices, led pro-life initiatives and created a commission on divorces. One of Bergoglios major initiatives as archbishop was to increase the Churchs presence in the

slums of Buenos Aires. Under his leadership the number of priests assigned to work in the slums doubled. At the consistory of February 21 2001, Archbishop Bergoglio was made a cardinal by Pope John Paul II with the title of cardinalpriest of San Roberto Bellarmine, a church served by Jesuits. Pope Francis held his Papal inauguration on March 19 2013 in St. Peters square in the Vatican. He celebrated Mass in the presence of various political and religious leaders from around the world. On the first Holy Thursday following his election, Francis washed and kissed the feet of 12 juvenile offenders, ages 1421, at Romes Casal del Marmo detention facility, telling them the ritual of foot washing is a sign that he is at their service.

on society. An example of this would be when the villagers become selfish and decide to close the Village to people who fled their past homes and are seeking refuge, as Ive mentioned earlier. Similarly, today, people say they build or establish a city or government that aims to help society. Sadly, there are flaws since we are human. We can be overcome by selfish emotions. This, of course, will affect and reflected in how the people there live. A country with corrupt officials who keep all the money that couldve been used for the common good will become poor, and only the government officials will benefit. It also shows that there are those who are genuinely generous and will do what they can to really help those in need. CAST OF CHARACTERS: 4/5. The protagonist is Matty, a teenage boy with a power to heal anything. He lives with Seer, his blind mentor. Other characters include Leader, the young, kindhearted leader of Village, Jean, the schoolteachers daughter, Mentor, the said schoolteacher and Jeans father, and Kira, Seers daughter. The characters may or may not have come from The Giver or Gathering Blue. Other characters such as Leader, Seer and Kira have special powers like Matty. The other residents of Village are shown to have flaws and mistakes, and are not perfect. They have their opinions, feelings, and desires, giving more depth to the story.

THE EAGLEt
GAME REVIEWS The Thrill of The Heist
Carlos De Guzman Remember the opening heist sequence in Christopher Nolans popular Batman film, The Dark Knight? Well, take that sequence and expand it into an entire game. Payday: The Heist is a cooperative firstperson shooter, released in the month of October 2011, developed by Overkill Software and published by Sony Online Entertainment. The game revolves around the exploits of four robbers namely Dallas, Hoxton, Chains and Wolf as they perform heists. The key to this game is Teamwork, as Payday is most enjoyable with actual, human friends. Unless you prefer performing heists with AI Bots. Killing civilians give you penalties, expecting The Players to instead take them as hostages, since this is a game about heists. The Players are required to complete objectives, usually to steal cash or valuables. The Police will attempt to them, but the players are expected to utilize their firearms. Heists vary on location, one on the 22nd floor of a skyscraper, one in a First World Bank and many others. Each heist contains different elements, changing the game in subtle ways such as the location of the Limo in the heist Undercover. Payday also features an upgrade and a ranking system, although not as similar as the Saints Row IV an open world action-adventure video game developed by Volition Inc. and published by Deep Silver. It was released for Microsoft Windows, the Playstation 3 and for the Xbox 360. A sequel to Saints Row the Third, Saints Row IV follows the adventures of the leader of the Third Street Saints, now the President of the United States, who has been abducted by the Zin Empire leader Zinyak along with his Cabinet members so they would be trapped in a simulation forever trapped. So now it is up to the President to save his planet from the Zin Empire and defeat Zinyak once and for all. Gameplay. Set in Virtual Steelport the city from the past game. There are 37 missions in total but the player can do them anytime. Side missions are also included to further increase the amount of game time. There are a lot of customization options such as changing the characters face, gender and voice and customizing cars with nitrous, better wheels, change their colors to the players liking. Superpowers are also included; the player can super jump and super sprint covering large distances in a matter of minutes. New weapons are also included such as the Dubstep Gun which can utilize music to eliminate enemies and the Singularity Gun which releases a black hole to suck enemies into it and then causing a massive explosion. You can call homies in your phone to aid you in missions, let your homies deliver your cars and other vehicles for you and clear your notoriety.

Andre Alampay When Nintendo announced the fourth last year, and announced when it would be released earlier this year, I went back to revisit one of the first games I ever played, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I played through it again and had a different feeling than what I had six years ago. Gameplay. Gameplay has drastically changed from the last 2 games. SSBB drastically swaps the fast gameplay for a more slower and balanced way of playing than the last two games. Characters have also changed as no characters, have the same move set or have a different play styles, although it would have been better had they had different move sets all together than to recycle. The first ever 3rd party characters have also been added in Sonic and Solic Snake. The Final Smash is also a great addition, however, while some are flashy, incredible to look at and powerful, others are weak, easy to avoid and pathetic. Stickers, a collectible in the game, can actually improve a characters stats in attack, speed, etc. The biggest complaint is with the stupid mechanic of tripping. Its unpredictable, unneeded and has caught me a life in a match more than once. Another complaint is the lack of a good online feature, since lag and loss of connection is bound to happen, even with good internet. Hopefully they fix this with the WiiU. Score: 7.5/10 Presentation. The presentation is stunning and gorgeous. The designs of the stages and characters have incredible detail. Music has also been improved by including music from all franchises represented, from Metal Gear Solid soundtracks to songs from Mario spin-offs. Customization has also been added but in small ways. You can set how often a song is heard in a specific stage and even create your very own stage. Score: 9/10

systems seen in games such as the Call of Duty series. However, as the game is extremely fun to play with friends, it is quite frustrating to pull off a heist with your AI-controlled teammates. The AI Bots do nothing but provide cover fire for you to, for example: Collect the Thermite and Drill from the Server Room on your own. This however, is in the game to encourage you to play with actual, proper human beings, to have a sense of cooperation and teamwork. Verdict: 8/10. I recommend Payday: The Heist to those who found The Jokers heist to be.. quite awesome or someone just likes action games.

Saints Row IV
Gil Gerard Guevarra Soundtrack. There are 7 radio stations in total: GenX 89.0, KRhyme 95.4, K12 97.6, The Mix 107. 77, Mad Decent 106.9, Four 20 103.6 and Klassic 102.4. Featuring famous artists such as Macklemore, Kendrick Lamar, Machine Gun Kelly, Aerosmith and a lot more. Sound effects are also enhanced to further immerse the player when playing the game. Graphics. Graphics are improved in Saints Row IV everything is much more detailed than the past game. The player can change the textures anytime but even at the lowest settings, the game still looks awesome. Verdict: 5/5. I rated It 5 out of 5 because there are a lot of awesome gameplay mechanics such as superpowers and new weapons and also because of the great graphics and soundtrack. Theyve improved the graphics by a hundredfold with details as great as the real world, metaphorically speaking of course. The soundtrack is better than the past game, enhancing all the sound effects and adding great tracks such as I Dont Want to Miss a Thing, Gold and Swimming Pools. I recommend this to you if you like explosions, awesome superpowers and teamwork.

Modes & Playability. New modes can be unlocked by doing specific tasks. My favorites include Boss Battles, in which you fight all 10 bosses of the game, Chronicles, where you witness a clip of a famous Nintendo game, and Stage Builder where you create your very own stage, complete with music, background, hazards and platforms. Other characters can be unlocked such as Solid Snake, Sonic, Captain Falcon, Lucario, etc. The final piece of SSBB collection is the addition of an online mode and its sotry mode: Subspace Emissary. Online mode is okay. It needs to be fixed or changed completely to get rid of problems with connections. Story mode is also majorly flawed as it is repetitive with the 3 goals being: (a.) Reach a specific point, (b.) defeat a boss or a specific amount of enemies or (c.) Activate switches to progress. You can have fun with friends but as a story mode, other fighting games have done better. Score: 8/10 Verdict: 8/10. The game can be fun with friends and has insane amounts of playability. There are glaring features, but are minor compared to what fun you will have.

THE EAGLEt Animal Crossing: New Leaf

Luis Gabriel Adarlo It has been two years since the release of the Nintendo 3DS. As I remember, prophecies of doom were being heaped onto it. Since then, it recovered, as one could say, thanks to stellar games, such as this one. It could be said that this game was late. It was promised at E3 2011, but like Luigis Mansion: Dark Moon it was delayed to this year. Better late than never, right? This is a game that actually deserves the praise heaped upon it. In my eyesmy eyes that have seen the 3D effects and saw them as decenthis game was fashionably late. The new things in this Animal Crossing are like being mayor, thus letting you set up projects and ordinances (for a cost of money and time), having seeable limbs, a new art style, a minigame island and more. Graphics: 5/5.

REVIEWS

Gameplay: 4/5. Slice of life thats as sweet as a slice of pie. Needs preparation for the pie, of course. Look, if one wants to play Animal Crossing, one needs time and patience. This is the type of game that needs you every now and then, as this runs on the system clock. Time-traveling is a no-no. And anyways, things take time to do. For example, setting up community projects takes a long time, due to the fundraising of Bells (your money in this game) to just set up the thing. After paying it off, you then have to wait for the next day. Pat yourself on the back if you got it done. The payoff is great, you good mayor you! Lots of things to do, like go to the Island for WiFi minigames. You will not run out of things to do. Verdict: 10/10. From Nintendo, comes a great game for the 3DS. Is it worth the wait? Yes. Are the things in the game worth the Wait? I think so! Words cannot describe my emotions about Animal Crossing: New Leaf. From improved multiplayer, to the new art style, to the customization abilities, and more, you could play this forever. Make no mistake, this is a great game. This will be great for anyone getting a 3DS/2DS/3DS XL, alongside other recommended games such as Fire Emblem: Awakening, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Resident Evil: Revelations, Project X Zone, Nintendogs + Cats (So kawaii!), Super Street Fighter IV (3D) and the upcoming Pokemon X and Y.

Star Wars: Republic Commando

Anton Vergel de Dios Star Wars: Republic Commando is a first person shooter based in the Star Wars universe. It follows the tale of Delta Squad, an elite group of clone commandos. It is said to bridge the gap between Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, in the point of view of the clone troops. The game is perfect for Star Wars fans to experience the life of a Delta commander in the Clone Wars. One of the most remarkable things in the game is the AI of your comrades. You can make them defend a point, attack an enemy, secure an area, snipe, and a few more other features. These help you a lot in game play, setting up a tactical formation to get rid of all the battle droids, Geonosians, Droidekas, and many more beloved Star Wars enemies. The weapons you start out with arent all that cool, but you get attachments to make your main blaster a sniper, assault rifle, grenade launcher, and a few more other kinds of weapons. The story of this game is easy to catch up to and gets you attached to the game, making the sad moments all the more saddening. The characters too are very nice, making choose a favorite teammate in your squad of 4. There are a few flaws in the game, one is the lack of Co-op, which could have made the game much more fun with friends, rather than a competitive multiplayer. Another is the amount of missions, which is too small, compressed in 3 act/chapters. A way to compensate for this is to make the difficulty of the game Hard, to make the game longer and much more of a tactical game than a charge & shoot. Verdict: 9.5/10. I recommend this game to all people, non-Star Wars and Star Wars fans alike, mainly because the game play is not all that hard to understand and play, plus the characters are really hard to get unattached to.

This thing is totally a New Leaf in comparison to the other games in the series. For one, the people are taller, enabling for more customization. The way they look like they were also painted just adds to the charm. The surroundings just POP in 3D, due to the new presentation that makes the village look spherical in nature.

The test of water graphics! The water looks nice, just that they look better under 3D and the 3DSs screen. The water looks like its painted! This game has amazing water graphics! It looks awesome when moving, and is also better in 3D. Great new artstyle, great water models, great graphics for 3DS.

Its a great time to be a 3DS owner. This is a great game, once you get the ball rolling from the slow start.

THE EAGLEt
BOOK REVIEWS Cry of the Icemark

Animal Farm
by Thomas Oh Animal Farm, a 1945 novel by George Orwell, looks as if it is for children. In a way, it is. In another way, it isnt. The story of Animal Farm is seemingly based on rather well-known events; one of the events is the Russian Revolution of 1917. Of course, the characters too resemble and are based on other important figures of the Soviet Union; Mr Jones, the former human owner of the farm, who is overthrown by the animals after he neglects to care for then animals, is based on Tsar Nicholas II. As for the animals, Old Major, a boar who fuels the animals rebellion (and dies before it), is an allegorical combination of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. Napoleon (a pig), the main antagonist of the short novel, is modeled after Joseph Stalin. Snowball (yet another pig), who was the original leader of the farm after the rebellion, and subsequently exiled from the farm for being Napoleons rival, is based on Leon Trotsky, with a bit of Lenin. As the novel gives an allegorical representation of the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union, and being a short book (only 141 pages) and fast-paced, it seems as if it was directed for children rather than for adults. Then again, the novel has some parts which younger people most likely wouldnt understand or would be sickened of. For instance, when some animals oppose Napoleons rule of the farm, they are promptly executed; And so the tale of confessions and executions went on, until there was a pile of corpses lying before Napoleons feet and the air was heavy with the smell of blood, which had been unknown there since the expulsion of Jones. Also, in the latter part of the novel, one of the most loyal supporters of Napoleon, a horse named Boxer, grows old and is unable to work. Thus, Napoleon sends Boxer to an animal hospital which actually is a knackers yard; Boxer is never seen again. Particularly memorable are the last parts; the pigs abridge the Seven Commandments to a single phrase: All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others. Not only that, as years pass, the pigs begin to resemble humans, walking upright, drinking alcoholic drinks, and wearing clothes. In the end, the animals of the farm realize that they cant distinguish pigs from humans, concluding the novel in a somewhat strange manner. Animal Farm, as I view it, is a quick yet good read; its also fast-paced, having swift transitions. The novel seems to make the point of power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely clear. Now, I stated that it seems to be for children: some would agree. A more suitable Orwell book (even in my opinion) for adults would be 1984. Anyway, its still a fascinating allegorical novel, exploring the brutality of something that they didnt expect yet still caused; they just wanted a change. Only that it ended up being the change for the worse.

REVIEWS

Paolo Murga

Thirrin Freer Strong-in-the-arm Lindenshield. Thats a mouthful for a 13-year old girls name. A princess, actually, who has the fate of her kingdom resting on her shoulders The Cry of the Icemark is the first book of the Icemark Chronicles, written by Stuart Hill. It is about a young warrior princess of the land known as the Icemark as she struggles to deal with the threat of invasion by the ruthless General Scipio Bellorum and ruling her country after her fathers death in battle. To do these, she must enlist the help of some of her kingdoms mortal enemies, and recruit some mysterious figures to her cause. Accompanying accomplishing these are her mentor/tutor Maggiore Totus, her loyal soldiers, and her new friend Oskan, a strange young warlock. In terms of plot this book is full of action from start to finish. Im amazed that despite being bloody, the battles are all strategy-driven and written as if the author was a former soldier writing his memoirs. Its even more interesting to see a fight between an inexperienced, yet strong and brutal for her age 13-year old girl, and a merciless veteran general. The battles themselves are very lengthy, probably covering most of the chapters with a few good, sometimes dramatic, peaceful times, and have so many things going on. Im talking about unexpected parties coming into play (NO SPOILERS), and twists and turns in the tide of battle. The plot also has a very realistic take on the horrors of war, such as reckless moves causing someones death, disciplinary action, and executions. Besides the action, diplomacy and negotiation was also involved in the story. There was a chunk of the story wherein forming alliances was Thirins main agenda, giving her a chance to establish good relationships with others,

even mortal enemies and mysterious beings. In fact, I thought making friends seemed endless for the warrior princess. With all of this, Stuart Hill was able to make the story both realistic and thrilling and gave the readers the urge to continue reading. However, all the surprises that just pop out in the story can sometimes be quite confusing. Nonetheless, just like when watching/reading something like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you should just go with it to enjoy it. Character development was greatly shown in both the battle sequences and the peaceful times. In Thirrins case, I loved how she changed from being ruler, warrior, and teenage girl, and how she was able to cope with all her hardships. Oskan was also an interesting character since like Thirrin, he was inexperienced in terms of war, but also gave some contributed greatly as he supported Thirrin with his witchcraft and healing, diplomacy, and encouragement. Even minor characters seemed important, due to their roles in the war and since Stuart Hill gave many of them fancy names. Verdict: 9/10. For some strange reason, I always enjoy seeing different groups of people working together to reach a common goal. For example, collecting war assets to stop the bad guys in the game Mass Effect 3 greatly satisfies me. Its the same feeling when I read this book, except from a characters perspective. I also liked seeing strategy being used to dictate action during the war, not just random fights, and loved all the surprises. However, when compared to other books, the story seems a bit common and is not as unique as it is complex and action-packed. Oh, and regarding vocabulary, I learned a lot from this book as a Grade 5 student (back then).

Percy Jackson: The Lost Hero Son of Neptune

Julio Teodoro Son of Neptune is the sequel of The Lost Hero, but with a new protagonist, Percy Jackson, not necessarily new since he was the main character of the previous series of books. The book is mainly about Roman Mythology and Greek Mythology combined, like the Lost Hero. This book takes place a few months after the events of The Lost Hero, but in a new setting, Camp Jupiter. Percy Jackson has been stolen of his memories and has been led to go to Camp Jupiter a place for Half-bloods, children of Gods and Mortals, to be safe, but Percy knows that this place wasnt his home. He then meets new people like Hazel and Frank. They then set on a quest to save Thanatos in Alaska. They then meet various characters like Hylla, Nico Di Angelo, an old friend of Percy, and much more monsters. They also encounter different problems their own, like Hazels secret, Franks weakness and Percys memories being lost. They tackled different enemies like giants, cyclopes, gorgons, harpys, and Gaea, the main antagonist of the series. The book entertains its readers with exciting stories and small plot twists along with references to the previous books in the series, with various connections to the real world. Though the book might seem perfect, there are some minor problems of the book. The story starts out very slow, with minimal story, but the details in the next chapters make up for this. There were very slight problems in the plot, significantly regarding the back story of the character, Frank Zhang. Despite these problems, fans of the previous books will certainly enjoy this book, with new things in store this book certainly a must buy if you havent bought it yet. I give Son of Neptune 5 out of 5, for the story, the detail and the writers ability to create stories as interesting as this.

THE EAGLEt
tv REVIEWS Doctor Who: Series Seven
Carlos de Guzman heads off with The Doctor to see the universe, saving civilizations and even exploring the depths of the Time Lords TARDIS. Series 7 features a wide array of foes, new and old. Fan favorites such as the Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels and the Ice Warriors return along with the ever so mysterious Great Intelligence and The Whispermen. And I would just like to say, the acting in this series is at its best! Matt Smith portrays the 1200 year old Time Lord with energy, liveliness, a very alien personality and the pain, loss and guilt of a blood soaked warrior. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill perform their characters extremely well on par with Smith. Their close friendship in real life translates very well on screen, resulting in a very close and fun relationship on screen. Jenna Coleman, however portrays the Impossible Girl with a flirtatious, energetic and quickwitted personality and has an amazing chemistry with Smith. This series also has thirteen episodes written by some of the UKs best writers like Steven Moffat, Neil Gaiman and Mark Gatiss to name a few. Their scripts capture the wonder and adventurous life of The Doctor and Thomas Oh Margaret Thatcher, who was portrayed as a more manly than womanly figure, who would constantly bully her Cabinet, and would usually be a reckless, dominant, and hot-headed figure. (Definitely not the best portrayal of Thatcher. Nope.) It is probably safe to say that she disliked the show (because watching yourself get teased by a puppet on television is fun, no?). Its safer to say that British artists (as did the leftists) hated her and her policies. Although it still isnt known internationally, the show did ridicule international politicians (such brave souls). Among those commonly featured were Ronald Reagan (arguably the most commonly featured person after Thatcher); Mikhail Gorbachev, the Soviet president; Pieter Willem Botha, the South African prime minister and state president; and Franois Mitterrand, the French president. Appearances were also made by Robert Mugabe, Nelson Mandela, Ferdinand Marcos, Corazon Aquino, George H. W. Bush, Richard Nixon, Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi, and even Adolf Hitler (although incognito). In another song, they managed to sing pejoratively about world religions and beliefs. It was a risky move (Blasphemous, some said), but they seemed unafraid of criticisms. Of course, at this point, it seems obvious that not all British people enjoyed the show. I mean, who would enjoy being insulted? No one would like it if one was to be insulted as a caricatured puppet, sometimes looking too grotesque. Then again, some celebrities benefited from all these. They became more well-known, being ridiculed. Adding to that, the show did launch the careers of then-unknown voice actors.

Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction show.. in the world. Even longer than Star Trek, Star Wars and whatnot. Its been on for nearly 50 years, actually turning 50 on November 23 this year! Series 7 Part 1 continues the further and final adventures of the renegade Time Lord known as The Doctor (played by Matt Smith) with his companions, Amy and Rory Williams (played by Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill) as they encounter foes such as the Daleks and the ever so famous, Weeping Angels. Part 2 however introduces the feisty Clara Oswald (played by Jenna Coleman) to the already mourning Doctor, who is convinced that the universe doesnt care reluctantly returns to aid her in fighting off The Great Intelligence in 1892. Clara intrigues The Doctor, having seen her die at an earlier point in time but yet she keeps reappearing in different points in time. Determined to solve the mystery of the Impossible Girl , he eventually finds another version of Clara and invites her to come with him. Clara

Spitting Image
Rude. Insulting. Vicious. Crude. Controversial. Funny. Those are (rightfully deserved) words which described and continue to describe Spitting Image. The year is 1984, and its not the year George Orwell had written about. Ronald Reagan was re-elected U.S. president and Margaret Thatcher was still in power in the United Kingdom with rising unemployment rates. Instead of verbally abusing them by rambling day and night, why not visually do so? From here, enter Spitting Image, a British satirical puppet show. During its 12-year run on British television, no one was immune from being starred as a puppet in the show. It was evident that the show wasnt afraid of bashing practically anyone. People commonly ridiculed included politicians (both national and international), celebrities, the British royal family, and the religious. As long as something big happened somewhere in the world involving well-known people, the show sprang into action. This rather annoying habit of Spitting Image sparked criticisms; that is, usually from the lampooned, because being featured as a puppet is just too offending. The show did awfully well for a satirical puppet show, in my opinion. Although it had a rather tumultuous time from 1984 to 1985, by 1986, the show had become popular; one of the songs, The Chicken Song, became a number one hit in the U.K. charts for three weeks. Around 15 million people watched the show at its peak. The series was nominated for 10 BAFTA awards, winning one in 1990 for editing (TV category). The show continues to be remembered for its daringness, its witty (and somewhat dry) humor, how they showed rather, didnt show respect, and its unflattering portrayal of

captivate audiences in all around the world with the fantastical adventures, terrifying monsters, a large amount of lore and well written characters of course. All in all, I would give this series a 9 out of 10. There are a few inconsistencies regarding a small amount of rushed endings but it is quite a reasonable score to give to Season 33 or Series 7 of Doctor Who. The next episode is airing on its 50th Anniversary and is said to be longer than an hour starring fan favorite, The Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and his companion Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) alongside The Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) I am eagerly anticipating the next episode and I hope you will too!

By 1993, however, writers left the show and viewership collapsed. In 1996, the final episodes aired. I, for one, enjoyed Spitting Image, and continue to do so. Before you start to question yourself if I had watched the show in the U.K. during the 80s, no, I wasnt born in the 80s nor have I ever been to the U.K. Its just that, for some reason, I find British humor appealing. Thus, when searching for British satirical (political) sitcoms two years ago, I came across this show along with two others (Yes Minister/ Prime Minister and The New Statesman are also excellent shows). I guess I find this show appealing due to its content: satire. And there are occasionally the songs, difficult to forget. I admit that this television show isnt really for younger people. Its most certainly not enjoyable for younger audiences who probably have no idea whats going on and whos that and that and why there are men being bullied by a woman in a suit. There are probably some students who can understand whats going on. If not, well, they can enjoy the tiny bits of violence here and there because thats easier to interpret. (Parental guidance is advised)

THE EAGLEt OPINIoNS The Korean Democracy (or the lack thereof)
by Thomas Oh edited the constitution rather heavily (Park Chung-hee was allegedly inspired by Marcos to hold a self-coup, which Marcos had done a few weeks before Park Chung-hee did). Now, in contrast, Ferdinand Marcos didnt first seize power through a military coup; Marcos also never declared himself President for Life. Park Chung-hee did all those, however. Also, Marcoss rule didnt end through an assassination by his own security service. Not only that, rumors about the involvement of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) in manipulating public opinion during the election spread. Initially, before and during the election, they were unverified. After the elections, however, it turned out that the allegations put forth by the Democratic United Party (the opposition) were true. An agent of the NIS did post politically sensitive articles and comments in various sites. Worse, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency knew about the allegations and proceeded to whitewash the allegations; police chief Kim Yong-pan ordered the Police Agency not to announce the evidences. The SMPA subsequently announced that they did not find any illegal activities (against the collected evidences) three days before the election, which turned out to have a substantial impact on the election. Here are some of the comments posted (translated from Korean): We should not elect someone who is mentally unstable as our leader. (Former) President Roh Moo-hyun was scandalous; his legacy consists of political dichotomy, the anti-USA attitude, pro-North Korea attitude. Commies, treat them better while they are still alive. President Roh must be a martyr, who committed a suicide after taking bribes. President Rohs suicide is nothing but an explosion of anger at himself If those dont count as politically sensitive (or insensitive) or enough to manipulate opinions, I dont know what would. Now, those were the comments which were deleted and hushed up by the SMPA and the NIS. What Kim Yong-pan and Won Sei-hoon (the head of the NSI) didnt do during the public hearing session was to swear to tell the truth, which means they did lie or could have lied.

South Korea, as I see it, has numerous problems, ranging from the stagnant economy to media censorship to allegations of fraudulent elections, and to a lack of actual democracy. As for the latter, I believe that democracy in the Republic of Korea is being threatened or already has. Of course, there wouldnt have been any protests if everything turned out fair and democratic like how all elections should be conducted. Alas, over 25,000 protesters gathered in front of the Seoul City Hall to demand an official apology, a proper investigation, and for the President to step down amidst revelations of public opinion manipulation and allegations of voting irregularities. The protesters used lit candlesticks to make their point, and not violence, even though the police fired water cannons with irritable chemicals and arrested university students who shouted election was flawed and Park Geun-hye is responsible for fraudulent election and to put the directors of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the National Intelligence Service to trial. I, being the liberal (and leftist) Korean, salute and support the protesters (whom I consider heroes) who defend democracy and do believe that the people involved in the scandalous election interference should be punished accordingly. And especially if they are from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the National Intelligence Service, which, instead of protecting the nation and the citizens, interfered in the presidential elections and manipulated public opinion while trying to censor events in relation with the controversial election. So much for democracy, isnt it? Then again, democracy is a funny thing (when it shouldnt be) in South Korea, if I look back at the history of the country. Ever since the inception of the modern Republic, the sovereign state has had a rather tumultuous time. Of the sixty-five year history of the modern Republic of Korea, twenty-one years have been allotted to actual democracy.

Then, of the twenty-one years of current liberal democracy, the opposition was in power for just ten years. Now, it seems that even the little bit of democracy (the flawed one at that) that existed so far seems to be fading away. The most recent presidential election was held on the 19th of December, 2012, and Park Geun-hye emerged victorious in the election; the results were announced as early as 9 p.m., even when there was a 2% (ultimately 3.6%) difference between Park Geun-hye and the closest contender and the polls werent closed. It doesnt seem particularly atrocious that Park Geun-hye was elected (albeit the early results were somehow strange), seeing that a woman was victorious in the election. However, shes the daughter of Park Chung-hee, the former military strongman and dictator of South Korea, whose democratically repressive 18-year authoritarian rule was marked with human rights abuses, widespread corruption, and a seemingly powerful economy (aided by the U.S., which eventually got tired of the dictator). To get to know Park Chung-hee better (seeing that democracy was non-existent back then), some comparisons could be drawn between Park Chunghee and Ferdinand Marcos. They were both fervent anticommunists, U.S. allies, born on the same year (1917), credited with economic growth, declared martial law, ruled in a near-same time period (Park Chung-hee ruled from 1961 1979, Marcos ruled from 1965 - 1986), and

Delving deeper into the topic of Korean democracy, there are more to tell regarding press freedom. Ever since Lee Myung-baks inauguration as President in 2008, there has been a noticeable decline in freedom of expression. I believe that the people have the right to know whats going on in the country. However, the national television channels neglect to report on the protests and all the controversies which surround the government and government departments, for fears that they may disappoint the government officials and thus, to please them. Thus, the main television channels, such as KBS or MBC, refuse to report the ongoing candlelight protests and instead reported on how many times President Park Geun-hye changed dresses (as in, hanbok, the Korean dress) when she was in the U.S. In matters of freedom of expression, South Korea has been in a steady decline. For example, on February 15, 2011, a university professor was arrested for making comments critical about Lee Myung-bak and the government. In another case, the government marked a popular podcast, Naneun Ggomsuda as anti-government material for lampooning the then-President Lee. Continuing from freedom of expression, internet freedom is one of the bases for democracy. South Korea, being technologically advanced and boasting one of the fastest internet speeds in the world, would seem to have a good record of internet freedom. Except that it doesnt. The Philippines enjoys greater internet freedom than South Korea, in reality. Internet users in South Korea cant enjoy free and unfiltered internet. South Korea censors sites sympathetic to the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea (North Korea) and sites which are politically sensitive (as in, sites which criticize the government). The police also arrested people for publicly supporting or posting about North Korea in Twitter. They censor sites on the basis that they are harmful sites. Even music is filtered by the government. They also censor immoral and indecent sites, such as sites for unrated games, gambling, and obscene material. They also managed to arrest people who upload and download torrents. This level of internet freedom surely equates to actual liberal democracy, doesnt it? And, since we are in the topic of democracy, I believe that the Gwangju Democ-

ratization Movement of May 18, 1980 should be mentioned. The citizens of Gwangju, after Chun Doo-hwan took power in yet another military coup, led a mass demonstration against the military regime. The results, martial law in Gwangju, Gwangju cut off from the outside world through a blockade (the city was basically besieged), cutting of phone lines, city placed under a complete media blackout, and a massacre by the military that resulted in the deaths of (as low as) 165 to (as high as) 2,000 people (they remain estimates). The Democratization Movement was eventually unsuccessful and people in Seoul were completely clueless on what happened for around a month. Now, with all the reports of arrests, cover-ups, and protests, it seems like the country is reverting to the 70s, the Yushin era, when Park Chung-hee was in power. It seems scary, yes, but the power of the masses outweighs the presidents. Protesters are armed with lit candlesticks as a symbol of a peaceful demonstration. They will lead the way someday, when proper democracy is restored, like the time when Kim Dae-jung was in power.

The Peoples Republic of Procrasti-Nation

The official definition of the word procrastination is the action of delaying or postponing something. So what does it have to do with a student such as myself? Obviously, it will affect ones productivity and possibly grades. Moreover, the student becomes even more involved because he turns into a victim of his own faults, whether his procrastination is successful or not. Crudely put, I think that procrastination is bad. It is said that over 90% of students procrastinate. Some general reasons as to why this happens are the following. First, students tend to get distracted by their surroundings. Today, this is usually caused by the internet, technology and activities of friends. Second, some want their work to be so complete and perfect that they focus more on finding little details. This could be good depending on the speed of the person. Third is not being motivated. This can come from not knowing what to do, finding the task difficult, or simply disliking a task. Fourth by Paolo Murga is bad time management. Finally, theres the simple lack of sleep. In terms of negative effects, procrastination may alos overwhelm you with work in the long run. Procrastination also leads to anxiety, which can damage immune systems and our ability to focus. In my personal experience, I have developed feelings of regret and depression, traits of rebelliousness and being self-critical, and have lower self-esteem. Although most people say that procrastination is a bad habit, other people, even well renowned experts, say that procrastination CAN be productive. This is called active (good) procrastination. It is when you prioritize in order to lessen the load and eventually take steps to complete the task. Even if youre not able to finish, you wont feel like a complete failure. Good effects of active procrastination include having time to let good ideas flow naturally, time to relax and rest the mind, a chance to plan a work schedule, and an opportunity to finish other tasks. As a solution to passive (bad) procrastination, it is best to do the following. First, divide a task into several parts to avoid overwhelming yourself. Second, have a schedule to pressure you into working faster. Third, always get enough sleep to avoid sleeping while working. Fourth, energize yourself a bit to motivate yourself, but dont get carried away. Finally, cut off all distractions around you. In my opinion though, I still wouldnt procrastinate. It is easy for me to get distracted and at times, I cannot motivate myself. To me actually, procrastination is like an addictive medication. It may seem to help at first, but in the long run; it will bring you into ruin. In fact, I sometimes strain my relationship with my parents due to keeping them awake when I cram homework. In conclusion, its best to stop now so that it does not become a habit.

The Economy of the Philippines 2013: If its rising, how come we dont feel it?
According to surveys, the Philippines has the fastest growing economy among the other Asian countries for the first quarter of 2013, even beating China. Honestly I did not feel the economy rise at all; a lot of Filipinos are living in poverty. So if the economy has really increased, the population of Filipinos who are living a poor life should have lessened. But their population in 2012 which has an average of 9385 bigger than the population last 2006 which was 8448. Another thing is, despite the increase in the economy, 4 out of 10 Filipinos says that by Gil Gerard Guevarra they did not feel the economy increase at all. 42 percent of the Filipinos say that the economy didnt improve at all, while 33 percent says that it improved and the remaining 24 percent says that it got worse. What Im saying is that the government needs to help us feel that the economy is increasing. They should pay attention to smaller things like to send Emergency Response Teams and provide more emergency supplies like lifeboats and life vests to remote areas so that when theres a natural disaster like flash floods and storms, experienced people will always be there to help those in danger. Another thing is to build public schools in remote areas because in some cases, the children will have to cross a river or climb a small mountain in order to reach the nearest public school. We dont need your surveys to show us our economy is rising. We just need you to take action for us to feel that the economy is rising. So prove that the economy is rising by doing something that benefits us!

THE EAGLEt OpInIOnS NEWS A Safe Cyberspace

by Reinell Bleu Ladera Conflicts and online threats everywhere .This was brought by the immediate implementation of the Cybercrime Prevention RA 10175, which is an act defining cybercrime, providing for the prevention, investigation, suppression and the imposition of penalties therefore and other purposes. This controversial new law brought oral arguments, debates and petitions done and filed by different associations such as National Union of Journalists, Anonymous Philippines and Pinoy Hackers Associations. According to the Anonymous Philippines, this law can be compared to the electronic declaration of Martial Law. On the contrary, the new law can prohibit online crimes such as libel, identity theft, child pornography, trespass, malicious mischief and Staffa. Truly, the government has the right to protect the identity and reputation of its constituents, whether online or offline, against fraud and other malicious commercial activities. But how can we implement such law without an in-depth study of its implementing rules and regulations? Dangers and fears of the people were addressed in the TRO Temporary Restraining Order issued by the Supreme Court. The TRO is an order suspending the implementation of the Cybercrime for 120 days. In addressing the need, a historic forum was held, dated September 09 2012 at the Land Bank of The Philippines in Manila. This forum advocates a safe cyberspace and interdiction of organized crime. It was conducted to provide inputs in the Collaborative IRR to be drafted with the DOJ and other concerned agencies. In addition, this forum was triggered to clarify the misconception on the controversial law. All we wanted was clarification. There should be rules and regulations when implementing such law. However, it is the duty of netizens to be accountable of what they do offline or online.

On Bullying
by Kyle Michael Ingco Bullying hurts. Some people say its just for fun. They say that bullying is part of growing up. Others say its a way of convincing someone to do something for you. Victims complain that they are being intimidated when they are bullied. Some kids are so depressed that they even commit suicide. Now, what is bullying exactly? Bullying comes in many forms: physical, cyber, and verbal are the most used by bullies around the world. Physical bullying consists of kicking, punching, and sometimes strangling. Verbal and cyberbullying use less contact and focus more on emotions. Bullying is widespread. Based on the statistics of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, close to half of all children will experience school bullying at some point while they are at primary or secondary school. Online GMA News in 2011 reported that Plan Philippines conducted an initial baseline study on violence against children (VAC) in public schools entitled Toward a ChildFriendly Education Environment. The report stated that at least half of children in Grades 1 to 3, 70% in Grades 4 to 6, and 60% in high school have experience some kind of violence in school. It also stated that the most common form of violence experienced by children is verbal abuse ridicule, teasing, being shouted at or cursed at (source: Dr. Nina Halili-Jao Philippine Star October 14, 2012). But what causes bullying? According to Steve Biddulph, author of the book Raising Boys, one cause is competetiveness in academics and sport rivalries. Another is that less able students feel excluded and resentful, and bully people so they can get back some of their self-esteem and dignity. But the most common cause of bullying is that the bullies are getting bullied themselves. Most violent bullies are often hit a lot at home, and have lost some of their conscience and reluctance in hitting others. There are, however, a number of ways to prevent bullying. One way is to teach victims on how to deal with bullies; if the bully tries to hurt you physically in school, run away and alert a teacher. And if the bully tries to bully you verbally, ignore him and ask help from a responsible and trusted adult. But asking help from the kids who are neither bullies nor victims when being bullied is the best way of dealing with bullies. Once this is successful, the victim will never bullied at all. Parenting seminars on how to raise boys and prevent bullying are also helpful. Violence usually starts from bullying in childhood. It could lead to bullying in the workplace. And bullying among nations. Bullying is evil. It must be stopped. Now.

Spending Too Much on Wants

by Anton Vergel De Dios Money. This is something important for everyone, for food, clothes, and shelter. Everyone uses money to also get things they want, that are not really useful, like games, consoles, toys, and fancy everyday items, like overpriced pens/ pencils with carvings. But most people dont have money for what they need because of their repulsive buying of useless things. These useless things get them to spend all their money with all their advertisements and ways to get people to buy these. Some people, even if they buy food, the food they buy are junk food, chips, sodas, and alike. People also buy too much clothes, even if they have a moderate amount of it already. Possible solutions to this are buying what you need first, and then with the extra money, you can buy 1 or 2 want items just to help your urge to buy things that arent really necessary. Spending too much money is not really a problem, if you manage what you spend. For example, spending too much money on food that is actually good for you is not all that bad, as long as you still have wearable clothes. Another solution is to get a job or two, just small ones so you can earn a bit of spending money. Things I can argue about this problem are the amount of useless things people spend on stuff. Men with their stacks of video games that they forget to finish, then women with their ridiculous amount of clothes, half of them they dont even wear. For most people that do buy lots of useless things, its normal. It can also be an escape, to get away from al the stress and madness, and to just relax and buy things they like, so they can wear, play, or eat these things, whether theyre clothes, games, or food. So here we are again, on the topic of money, to get all of these things, we can either save up for it, or do small jobs then move on the the big ones, when we feel we are ready for them, so we can get more spending/saving money.
