Recently, I stumbled upon an insightful TED talk featuring Melinda

Gates entitled "What nonprofits can learn from Coca-Cola ." Melinda discusses how nonprofits can learn from Coca-Cola being able to distribute their product among hard to reach locations as well as marketing in such a way that associates CocaCola with happiness and friendship. I couldn't help but think of how we are doing in Eagle County and what we could be doing to better distribute our own products and services.

February News from Eagle River Youth Coalition

Like it or not, marketing is highly influential and can dramatically change someone's opinion of something in the blink of an eye, even if the product or service truly is beneficial. There's a reason why Super Bowl ads cost $4 million dollars and feature influential celebrities like Bob Dylan, James Franco, Bruce Willis, and Samuel L. Jackson, to name a few. The bottom line is these ads want you to associate the life you want with the product. They know that many decisions aren't made solely with logic but with emotion as the primary driver, so they pump us full of things that we aspire for. That is, the things we desire, hope and yearn for in our own lives. Now why can't nonprofits market in a similar fashion, catering to the needs of both the logical and emotional side? Traditionally nonprofit marketing is based on avoidance, not aspiration. We sometimes assume that if there is a great need for something, say condoms, that we don't need to make people want them. However, Melinda uses the example of poor sanitation and toilets being distributed to needy areas in 3rd world countries to mitigate the threat of disease. However, when local were provided toilets, they were not being used properly, sometimes being used as a storage room. They were able to motivate people to start using them by utilizing local talent to educate local populations and marketing toilets as modern and trendy. Continue Reading >>>

Please continue reading and we can discuss the following questions: 1. How are you tapping into our local talent? 2. How do you access those hard to reach populations?

YouthLeaderSpotlight:LeslieCano Service with a Smile

Roll up your sleeves, get dirty and have fun volunteering in your community. Most high schoolers
dread the thought of spending their precious time participating in community service projects. As kids, my sister and I would ignorantly refer to such acts as FFO's (Forced Family Outings). I was too immature and didn't recognize the value and importance of living outside of my comfort zone and meeting new people in my community. Leslie Cano, a junior at Eagle Valley High School, has a far different and more positive approach to serving others. Cano performs countless community service hours in Eagle County because she simply 'enjoys' it. No ulterior motives or selfrecognition. Speaking of rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty, Cano has been an active participant in Habitat for Humanity building houses and during her last project, she chose to be on the crew responsible for digging irrigation ditches and installing pipes. Tough work for a 17 year old. She is a committed member of the local nonprofit organization, Youth Foundation and teaches reading and math skills at Gypsum Elementary school. She added, "My favorite part about serving others is the journey of meeting new people and the feeling of excitement you get when you have accomplished your job." She also volunteers her time at Eagle County's Head Start program, offering child-care for parents who are learning skills on proper nutrition and family structure. Her cheerful demeanor and endless smile puts the most anxious parent at ease.
