A New Solution Installed in Minutes

M
Elastomeric Couplings

Elastomeric Couplings
Now theres a new solution to one of the most persistent and troublesome problems facing maintenance
personnel periodic coupling failure and the downtime and expense that goes with it. If a new insert is
needed, a low-cost replacement can be installed in minutes without moving either the prime mover or the
driven equipment.
There are only four parts to PowerStream couplings:
The two identical hubs (Numbers 1 and 2) are made of high-strength cast iron, cast steel or alloy
aluminum, each with four, six or eight teeth, depending on load and size. The split insert (Number 3),
which is made of specially compounded polyurethane, fits between the hubs. The outer holding rings
(Number 4) are made of steel, polyamide or bronze. The coupling requires no nuts or bolts.

ASSEMBLY AND
DISASSEMBLY

POWERSTREAM
FEATURES AND BENEFITS

After hubs (1) and (2) and holding

ring (4) are installed on shafts, the
teeth are then aligned parallel to
each other, but not touching.
Once installed, the hubs never
need to be moved again. The
elastic insert (3) can then be
installed in the slots formed by
the parallel teeth.

Changeout of coupling insert is

faster than any other coupling.
Custom compounded polyurethane
inserts can be provided in a variety of
durometers. This allows for both high
damping and high torque use.
Polyurethane insert is very resistant
to corrosion, chemicals and oils.
Standard Insert 40 to 180 F.
High Temp inserts up to 300 F.

2
1

When the insert is in position,

slide retaining ring (4) onto the
polyurethane insert. Centrifugal
force will expand the elastic insert
to fit tightly to the inside of the
retaining ring.

No lubrication or maintenance.
Can rotate hubs independently for
motor test.
No metal to metal contact.

To disassemble, remove the ring.

The insert can then be quickly and
easily removed and replaced. No
special tools, screws, bolts or other
fasteners are needed.

Powerstream is a registered trademark of John Crane

Large bore and torque capacity.

Horizontal and vertical operations
using
standard inserts and retaining rings.
Retaining rings provided with locking
set screw (Standard).
Drop out design, interchangeable
with T31 cplgs and other style
elastomeric drop outs.

NOTES:
(1) High Damping Inserts (HD) will be supplied as standard unless specified. High Torque (HT) Inserts can be supplied for standard temperatures as well as for high temperature applications.
(2) Maximum speeds are based on Cast Iron Hubs. Higher speeds may be attained using Ductile iron or Steel Hubs - Consult John Crane Engineering
(3) Maximum bores for ductile iron hubs - use those shown for steel.
(4) Distance Between Shaft ends (DBSE) is based on the shafts mating flush with the end of the hub face. Short or Longer shaft separations may be obtained by overhanging the hub or extending the shaft.
(5) Weights and Inertias are based on solid hubs

DROP OUT COUPLING - TYPE DO

Standard shaft separation applies when the shafts are mounted flush to the end of the hubs. In order to reach the minimum and
maximum shaft separations allow the shaft end to extend beyond or sit within the hubs equally.

POWERSTREAM DROP OUT COUPLING

FEATURES AND BENEFITS
High torque capacity
Lighter weight

Higher maximum speeds

Non-lubricated

No metal to metal contact

Longer shelf life

Larger bore capacity

Easy installation

Along with the benefits listed above, the Powerstream Drop Out Coupling is also interchangeable
with many competitive drop out couplings including the Falk T31 and the Kop-Flex Elastomeric.

COUPLING SELECTION
EXAMPLE

METHOD

Data required for Coupling Selection:

Application details (for Service Factors) Horsepower of the driver.
R.P.M. of the driver.

Shaft details of the driving

and driven equipment.

(1)Determine the service factors (SF1 + SF2) from the application and
classification lists noted on page 6.

Driven equipment: Force draft fan

Electric motor: 75 HP. R.P.M. of the driver: 1750
Motor bore: 2.38"
Fan bore: 2.00"
(1) Service Factor of a force draft fan (SF1) = 1.5 Service Factor of an
electric motor (SF2) = 1.0
(2) Maximum HP/100 per rpm = (HP * 100) / rpm * SF1 * SF2:
(75HP * 100) / 1750 * 1.5 * 1.0 = 6.43

(2)Calculate the maximum HP/100 rpm rating:

Max. HP/100 rpm = (HP * 100) / rpm * SF1 * SF2
Select the coupling which has a higher rated. Max HP/100 rpm as
shown on each table.
(3)Compare the maximum rpm capacity and bore requirements to the
catalogued limits for the coupling selected.

Coupling selection based on maximum ratings:

(A3 has a maximum rating of 8.0 HP/100 rpm)
(3) Compare bore requirements to the max. bore capacity of the A3:
the max. bore of an A3 is 2.75"
Maximum speed of the A3 is 4200 unbalanced.
