WEST END HEIGHTS -BANGALURU

A. INTRODUCTION
This document specifies the various design considerations and assumptions for the
Structural Engineering Design of New Town Heights at B.T.M. Extension, Bangaluru.
The proposed complex consists of a residential tower of Ground + Twenty Seven
storeys, with Two basements and provision for helipad at the top of the roof .
B. STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
The structure is proposed to be designed as a RCC Frame Beam-Slab Structure for the
building. The Retaining Walls shall be RCC walls. Column sizes are provided to
control deflection under seismic/wind loads. Ductility detailing not required be done
due to seismic zone II as per code provisions.
C. METHOD OF ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
The buildings are designed as 3-D structure with filler brick work for different load
combinations with columns and shear walls. The slab panels are designed as per
coefficients in IS 456-2000. The analysis & design of idealized model is carried using
Staad.Pro 2006 computer program providing design for beam & columns as per IS
456-2000. For Seismic analysis slab at each floor has been idealized as rigid
diaphragm so that all frames sway equally under lateral loads, with masses lumped at
the joints with 5% damping. Seismic Coefficients are as applicable to Seismic Zone II
as per IS 1893-2002.
D DEAD LOADS
The dead loads for the RCC members are considered on the basis of the density of
RCC as 25 kN/cum. The density of masonary is considered as 24 kN/cum.
The allowance for the floor finish is considered as 50 mm for the typical floors.
Loading provision for false ceiling and other finishes shall also be considered.
Toilets in residential storeys shall be sunken by 350mm. Balconies are 100mm sunk.
However, beams in the toilet areas shall be kept shallow to the maximum extent
possible to facilitate easy outlet of sanitary services.
The average roof finish is considered to be 150 mm thick.
E

IMPOSED LOADS

The Imposed Loads are considered as per IS: 875 as follows:

Residential Floors
Corridors and Staircases
(In commercial floors)
Corridors and Staircases
(In residential floors)
Toilets
Parking Areas (Car Parking)
Terrace (General)

4.00 kN/sqm
3.00 kN/sqm
2.00 kN/sqm
5.00 kN/sqm
1.50 kN/sqm

Overburden pressure from 45 mT Fire Tanker on retaining walls and extended

basement slab with 450mm filling shall be considered. The axle load for a 45 mT Fire
Tanker is 18 mT, with spacing between axles being 1.2m. Distance between wheels is
1.8m. The extended basement slab shall also be designed for 25mT truck load without
any filling.
F

SIESMIC LOAD
Begur is located in Seismic Zone II as per IS:1893-2002. The Seismic Loads are
considered for Zone II as per IS: 1893-2002 with the following factors:
Zone Factor (Z)
Importance Factor
Response Reduction Factor (R)

0.10
1.00
3.00

Type of soil is taken 1 as per soil report.

The structure is designed as ordinary RC Moment Resistant Frame but not meeting
ductility details as per IS: 4326 and IS: 13920.
G. WIND LOAD
Wind Load is considered based upon basic wind speed of 33m/s. The Terrain
Category is 3 and building is of class C. Building structure shall be designed for the
applicable external wind pressure, with pressure increase with height being accounted
for as per IS:875 (Part 3) with dynamic effects by applying gust factor. For the
purpose of design of glazing for the wind load, building is considered to have medium
openings for calculating the internal pressure. Summary sheet for the wind load
calculation is attached herewith for approval or any comments.
Cross wind response for the structure has also been performed as per the purposed
draft and commentary for IS :875 (Part 3)
H. DESIGN LOAD COMBINATIONS

WEST END HEIGHTS -BANGALURU

The structure shall be designed for the following load combinations as stipulated by
IS:456-2000 :
1.5 DL + 1.5 LL
1.2 DL + 1.2 LL +/- 1.2 EQX
1.2 DL + 1.2 LL +/- 1.2 EQZ
1.5 DL +/- 1.5 EQX
1.5 DL +/- 1.5 EQZ
0.9 DL +/- 1.5 EQX
0.9 DL +/- 1.5 EQZ
For the wind load design case, the earthquake loads will be replaced by wind loads for
all of the above load combinations.

FIRE RESISTANCE
Fire Resistance provisions for Structural members as per IS:456-2000 are provided.

FOUNDATION AND METHODOLOGY OF CONSTRUCTION

Isolated/Combined Foundation is designed for non tower area, and raft foundation is
designed for tower area columns with net bearing capacity 400kn/sqm and subgrade
reaction 16kg/cu.cm. for raft foundation. Bearing capacity 400kn/sqm is taken for now
tower area . Angle of shearing resistance of soil is taken 30 degree and density
18kn/cum.

K MATERIALS OF CONSTRUCTION:
RCC WORKS
The cement used for RCC work in the sub structure & super structure will be OPC
confirming to IS: 269. All RCC works will be mechanically vibrated to produce
dense, sound and durable concrete as per specifications. The water used in all stages of
construction shall strictly confirm to IS:456-2000. Use of fly ash as per IS codes is
permitted for Design Mix of concrete.
All reinforcement bars will be HYSD bars of Fe500 grade as per IS 1786.
LEAN CONCRETE
Lean Concrete of minimum 100mm thickness of lean concrete mix 1:4:8 using 20mm
down size graded crushed stone aggregate) shall be provided under all RCC

foundations. Mud mat shall be extended 100mm on all sides beyond the edges of
footings.
L. CLEAR COVER TO MAIN R/F
Clear cover to the main R/F shall be as follows.
1. Slab (roof & floor) Canopy,Chajja,Waist slab
of staircases

20mm or dia of bar

whichever is more.

2. Beams (Roof & floor)& Lintels

30mm

3. Columns/Pedestals (Main R/F)

50mm

4. Foundation slab, base slab & footings
